Unable to update table

Question

I'm trying to set the last column in my database equal to 'Deleted' for a particular record. The following code does not update the record, but it also does not produce an error. The column name is 'Status'.

out.println(request.getParameter("IDdel"));
PreparedStatement stmnt = con.prepareStatement("UPDATE tblError SET Status=? WHERE ID=?");
stmnt.setString(1, request.getParameter("status"));
stmnt.setString(2, request.getParameter("IDdel"));
stmnt.executeUpdate();
stmnt.close();
The two printlns display exactly what they are supposed to display 'Deleted' for the Status and 'KB-01' for the ID, but the update does not work. The column names are spelled correctly. The two parameters I am recieving are hidden objects from a form...

The object I am getting the ID field from is a hidden field as follows:
<input type="text" name="IDdel" value="<%out.println(rs.getString("ID"));%>">
For some reason when I make it a text box the update code executes correctly. why is this happening? I have to keep it a type of hidden, but when its hidden the table won't get updated. makes no sense to me. I'm not sure this is related to con.commit;.
