Unable to view photos in iPhoto unless same day import

I imported and edited a bunch of photos in iPhoto yesterday, but when I went to use them today, all I see are blank thumbnails. When I click on these, there's no picture. I can only see the photos I imported today. Where did all my other photos go? And how can I save them so they don't disappear on me?

Aneek:
By "no picture" what do you mean? What do you see? If' it's a gray window with an "!" in the middle it means that the library database file has been damaged and lost the link to the original file. That can happen if there's been an interruption while iPhoto is writing to the database file.
You can try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first four options. I'm not confident that that will resurrect the library but it's worth a try. If that doesn't work post back and we'll go from there. Also see the tip at then end of my signature.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Unable to view photos in iPhoto, although all pictures are still accessible via Finder?

Last week, I was trying to import some pictures from a USB flash drive. During the import, I got an error that some of the pictures were corrupt and iPhoto '08 7.1.5 stopped the process. At that time, iPhoto still showed all my events and pictures correctly.
The next day however, iPhoto was completely empty and did not show any event/picture. It simply says 'no photos' at the bottom (in Dutch):
None of the rebuilding features solve the problem (iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library).
Via Finder, I'm able to access the iPhoto library (and I only see 1 library at the location) and view the master files all sorted per year. All pictures open perfectly when I double click them in preview.
If I simply try to drag these pictures to iPhoto, I get an error saying that they are unrecognised/unreadable:
How do I get these events/pictures back in iPhoto?
    Thanks for your help!

It appears you'll haver to do the following:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Unable to view photos on iphoto

After downloading mac os x on my macbook, my iphoto photos appear as blank files when i enlarge them. How can I fix this problem? Thank you for your help

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD

  • I have suddenly become unable to access photo library  iPhoto (vers 9.5) on my external drive.  And time Machine will no longer back up to the same external (LaCie) drive.  Appreciate all suggestions.  The drive does show up on my desktop....

I have suddenly become unable to access photo library (iPhoto vers 9.5) on my external hard drive.  Also time machine isnt backing up to same external hard drive (LaCie).  The drive does show up on the desk top, but when i open iPhoto the library isnt listed, so I cant option click.

First, one should not try to run an iPhoto library from the same volume/drive that is being used by Time Machine for backups.  TM will continue to fill up the drive thus squeezing out iPhoto from being able to be opened and used. Also that doesn't allow you to let TM backup your library as it does with other files on your boot drive.
If you partition the EHD into two separate partitions you can run the library from it but that won't let TM backup the library which is important.
Are you able to see the library on the EHD via the Finder?  If so copy it back to your boot drive and open it there.  You may have to do some fixing on it.
Solution is to either run the library from the boot drive or get a second EHD to run the library from and let TM back it up along with your boot drive.

  • Unable to view photos received via e-mail or texting

    Hi,
I have been unable to view photos that I received via a text message. I do receive the yellow bubble alert telling me to download.  After I hit the download button, it just hangs.  I also attempted to send myself a photo from my work email address by mailing to [email protected]    Again, I received the notification to download the photo and after hitting the download button--nothing!   Am I doing something incorrectly?   A setting to be made perhaps?  FYI, I am running the latest update for the Charge.
    Thx for the help!

Well since nobody here responded, I called Verizon Tech Support directly.  I was instructed to remove the battery while leaving the power on (that's important--do NOT power off!).  Then depress the power button in succession twenty (20) times.  Replace the battery cover and power up as normal.  All fixed!!!    Thanks to "Julius"  at VZW.  Obviously, this is some type of reset sequence for the Charge.
Depress the power button 20 times with the battery still out or after putting the battery back in?

  • Viewing photos in iPhoto '11

I don't know if its merely a setting that needs adjusting but when I view photos in iPhoto a large proportion do not fill the entire screen as they did in iPhoto .09.
Can anybody help me fix this issue??

VERY frustrating not being able to view the photos filling the screen. It's a way to get us to buy another program. I don't understand why Apple takes away features that are valuable and necessary.
Why did Apple do this? I have to use Photoshop to see the photos in a large format - very inconvenient.
There is enough information to answer the question. Why can't we see our photos like we did in version 9???
There must be a competitor to iPhoto out there that will fulfill this need.

  • Delete photos taken on the same day

    Hi.
I have hundreds of photos taken on the same day each. How to delete photos taken on the same day?
Or I would have to ask like this, how to select all photos that were taken on the same day?

In your iPhoto '11 on your Mac?
    Search your photos by date:
Select the Photos View, and click the looking glass icon in h search field in the lower left corner.
    Select "Date"
Enter the date in the mini calendar that will pop up.
Now select all photos and press the delete key.
On your IOS-device use the "moments" view of the Camera Roll to find the photos taken on the same day.

Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Unable to view photos in library. I already rebuilt my tumbnail caches....

I am having the this problem: I can see the photos on the scroll in small view but when I click on a photo to make it large and view it there is a gray screen with a white dotted line around an exclamation point.
I rebuilt the thumbnail cache, as some earlier discussion suggested. BUT I DID RENAME AND MOVE SOME FILES BY MISTAKE from the Iphoto library, which I tried to revert to its original settings, but its still unnable to link the tumbnails to the photos. Is there anyway to recover my photos or at least be able to see new ones I take from now on?

    Matencio:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are all of the photos that way or just some? If it's all then it's more than just messing with the library from the Finder that's at work here. If most of the photos are visible you can try following Tutorial #1 before creating a new library and importing the Originals folder from your current library.
If all photos are affected then you're looking at starting from scratch with a new library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Unable to view photos on iPhone 4S

    Hi,
There are some photos which I am unable to view on iPhone 4S 64 GB. When I open those photos it opens up with a white screen but I am able to view those in the camera roll. It only happens when I open the picture to view it in the normal size. This photos are taken from the same device. I've performed Reset, refresh but its still the same.

  • Unable to view photos although after sycronising after upgrade to IOS 5.1.

Hi, I'm unable to view the photos after syncronising although application shows that I've successfully syncronise 9 photos. None can be displayed. This is after upgraded to IOS 5.1.Pls help.

    Completely agree with you, bladddddd.
There really should be a toggle in the cellular menu to switch between LTE, 3G & 2G. Carriers in some parts of the world may well be switching off the 2G service, but that doesn't apply to everyone & certainly not where I am in the UK.
I spoke to AppleCare about my problem last month, but they were unfortunately quite hopeless, not knowing that the easiest way for me to recover my original carrier settings in iOS 6.0.2, would have been for me to carry out a full reset & restore from a backup. :(
I did too pass on my annoyance with the inability to switch back to 2G, should I want to, after an over-the-air carrier settings update has taken place & has subsequently replaced the 3G toggle with the LTE toggle.
I have also completed the feedback form some weeks ago. I hope others having this same issue will do this too:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Hopefully, Apple may bother to actually take some notice of this problem, which will now affect a lot of iPhone 5 users.
The next iOS update will hopefully include the ability to override a carrier settings update & falling back to a 2G signal, should users want to, or need to, particularly in order to reduce the strain on the battery.
Until such an update is released, I'm sticking to iOS 6.0.2 :(
