Undo growth

Hi,
Data base Relaease : 9.2.0.4.0
OS : Suse linux 2.4.21-198-smp
One of my production database size is 16GB (including all the system objects + used & unused space + undo tablespace). Approximately used space is 13 GB. my problem is i am not able to control the growth of undo tablespace. From that 16GB of my database the 5GB is reserved for my undo tablesapce. Last week i have seen my undo tbs had 1307MB free space but now its having only 1074MB. My undo_retention=10800. Can you please give me the suggestions and valuable comments to solve this problem and way to approach and reason for this problem?
and for your clear analyze i have enclosed my current v$undostat output

Hi,
Is it development database or production? if it is development then check the pl/sql coding for undo generation. undo is generated by DML statements and there is rule exists for Optimal sizing of undo.. Kindly check for the commits at the proper places?? (if you can get the chance to tune the codes would be great .. go through the logics of the codes and create sub-procedure to commit after every 50000 records insertion/deletion/modfication)
if you are using Enterprise manager then follow this
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/oracle9i/daily/may14.html
and follow this otherwise:

Thanks

  • Undo Tablespace

    Hi,
For one of the database, Undo tablespace has reached upto 2.5GB. I have created one more undo tablespace. If users are frequently commiting the transactions, why it is increasing. It is a development database.
Can I delete the undo tablespace, once I conclude that the transactions are using the new undo tablespace?
    Pls guide me.
    Thanks,
    Raj

    Hi,
Before going to recreate the undo tablespace calculate the optimal sizing undo and create make changes as per nedd.

  • Undo tablespace growth

    Hi ..
My undo tablespace is Growing rapidly from 1gb to 10 gb with an Hour.
Is there any ways to find out which operation Generates More Undo ..
Can i able to restrict it...

    hi,
there is parameter that control the aging out of undo blocks that leverages size of UNDO tbs:
    UNDO_RETENTION
You can guarantee that unexpired undo data is not overwritten even if it means that future operations that need to generate undo data will fail. This is done by specifying the RETENTION GUARANTEE clause for the undo tablespace when it is created by either the CREATE DATABASE or CREATE UNDO TABLESPACE statement. Alternatively, you can later specify this clause in an ALTER TABLESPACE statement.
    more: UNDO RETENTION GUARANTEE

  • Undo Tablespace - Huge file growth.

    Hi,
My undo tablespace increases in size rapidly. We have to perform huge number of update operations in this database. How can I reduce the size of the undo tablespace on a regular basis?
    Regards,
    Santhosh

There is known bug in prior 9.2.0.5 releses . Undo tablespace does not use expired extents properly if it can allocate new segment. Upgrade to 9.2.0.5 is regular solution. Workaround is seting undotablespace autoextend off.

  • Unable to shrink undo tablespace... Help!

    Hi,
I have problems to shrink the system undo tablespace, which has grown up to 14 GB.
I use 9.2. Table space owner is 'SYSTEM', undo_management = AUTO.
I tried to shrink the greatest rollback segments by the commands
    ALTER SESSION SET UNDO_SUPPRESS_ERRORS = TRUE;
    ALTER ROLLBACK SEGMENT "_SYSSMU6$" SHRINK TO 20 M;
Oracle confirmed these commands, but nothing happened.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Hermann Mueller

You have seen the discussion about the undo segments, on the temporary tablespaces, you should be aware that the sort segment of a given temporary tablespace is created at the time the first sort operation takes place. The sort segment continues to grow by means of extent allocation until the segment size has reached the total storage demands of all of the active sorts running on the instance. Oracle will keep on allocating temporary space on demand unless the physical limit states otherwise.
Temporary segments are produced each time a sort operation (explicit -order by- or implicit -aggregation, reindexing-) requires to sort a set that cannot fit into memory. So if you detect excesive sort usage you should aim your monitors towards the sort operations (reports, reindexing, max, min, aggregations, order by ...). If your system has a DDS behaviour, this kind of operations are frequent as a massive sorting has to be peformed against millions of rows.
A Temporary tablespace will almost always appear to be near 100% full, that's because once oracle has allocated temporary space it doesn't release it back to the free space, it keeps it allocated even when the sort operation has finished. Criteria behind this fact is similar to the one oracle used to have when the rollback segments were in use, Oracle only allocated space and the dba should perform manual actions to release space, and the criteria is performance. Once it has allocated space this big, there are possibilities that the same circumstances that raised the temporary usage high water mark to this level are repeated, so if oracle keeps the mamimum allocated space, it won't have to allocate the same storage once more.
Main concern with temporary tablespace growth is not free space itself, but the reasons why this amount of space was allocated, so I suggest you to track the sql statements with sort operations. If you are certain the circumstances that motivated this amount of temporary resources to be allocated won't be repeated again, then you could think of resizing down your temporary tablespace. I suggest you to create a new temporary tablespace with the desired size, and alter the default tempoary tablespace to point to this newly crated temporary tablespace, and finally get rid of the original temporary TS.

  • UNDO TS???

    Hi All
    11.2.0.3
    Aix 6.1
Our UNDOTS is already 20Gb and it resides on /u30 which is 90% full already,
This is where the SYSTEM TS is located. I am afraid the SYSTEM can not expand anymore
How do I know if my UNDO still maximized usage of  this 20Gb? Or do I need to shrink it?
Another thing is PERFSTATS TS  is also located here in /u30 and is constantly expanding.
Can I truncate my perfstat tables and shrink the PERFSTATS TS?
    Thanks a lot,
    Pk

If SYSTEM is continually growing, that in itself is an issue that should be addressed.  In a mature system, there is little reason to see growth of the SYSTEM TS.  If it is, you should make sure that
    1) you are not creating your own segments in SYSTEM
    2) you moved the aud$ table to a separate TS
    3) you did not create the PERFSTAT schema in SYSTEM

  • I found My iPhone contacts on my friends Iphone we both have 4s! But we use the same apple ID and ICloud ID! How can undo what happened? all my private stuff is now on his phone!!! help me plz!!?

I found My iPhone contacts on my friends Iphone we both have 4s! But we use the same apple ID and ICloud ID! How can undo what happened? all my private stuff is now on his phone!!! help me plz!!?

Of course if you are both connected to the same iCloud account you have the same contacts - what did you expect?. The contacts live on the server and are read from there by the devices; so as you've both managed to sync your contacts up to iCloud they are now inextricably mixed. You can only delete your contacts by deleting individual ones, and doing that will delete them from your phone as well.
You can only unravel this by
    1. In the iCloud contacts page at http://icloud.com, select all the contacts, click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left and choose 'Export vCard'.
    2. Sign out of System Preferences>iCloud
    3. Create a new Apple ID and open a new iCloud account with it for your own use.
    4. Import the vCard back into the iCloud contacts page.
    5. Go to http://icloud.com and sign in with the original ID. This is now his ID. Work through the contacts individually deleting the ones you don't want him to have. When done sign out and advise him to change his password.
    6. Go to the new iCloud account and delete his contacts individually.
Of course if you have also been syncing calendars and using the same email address there are problems with doing this.

  • Undo is not working properly (grayed out)

Undo is not working properly in Indesign CC 9.2. I am using a 17" MBP running OSX 10.9.1.
Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
I ran into this issue doing a publication layout. I was not doing anything overly complicated. Copying/pasting, placing images, adding text boxes, copying/pasting text boxes. It seems to happen without rhyme or reason.
I know that is not helpful for troubleshooting so I was able to isolate the problem. Here is how to recreate it.
    Open new doc (standard letter)
Create text box with random text
copy the text box (cmd C)
paste the text box (cmd V)
move the resulting text box using selection tool (V)
select NEW text box (selection tool)
copy the NEW text box (cmd C)
paste the NEW text box (cmd V)
move the text box (selection tool).
Repeat until there are 5 text boxes (at least).
Undo the various actions after placing and moving the 5 text boxes.
I cannot undo back to a "new document."
In some cases I can only undo 2 actions before "undo" becomes grayed out, and in some cases, I can undo up to 9 or 10 actions before it gets grayed out.
    Other programs running:
    Illustrator
    Photoshop
    Text Edit
    MS Word 2011
    Excell 2011
    Messages
    Chrome
    Finder
    Fetch (FTP software)
I need to have these programs running simultaneously in many cases and have done so successfully in the past. I have a feeling it might be a memory issue, but I have not seen a similar post and I never had the issue with CS5 running with an identical setup. I was able to undo actions up until my previous save in CS5 sometimes 25-30 actions.

I unplugged the USB items and the problem still persisted so it is not related to any of those.
I shut down InDesign and tried reopening. InDesign crashed at reopen. I have provided the log below. Hopefully this shows where the problem is occurring.

  • Windows Update in Endless Loop of 'Installing updates" and "Undoing changes" on New Windows 8.1 Pro Install

I am setting new Windows 8.1 Pro computers, and am installing Windows 8.1 Pro to bare drives.  Everything goes fine until Windows Update starts installing updates, and then the computer goes for hours installing updates, and then "We
could not complete the updates Undoing changes".   It's an endless loop. It seems to be the same 38 updates.  This is a recent phenomenon.  I have not run into this until the last week or two on several new computer installs.
Again these are brand new installs, so something is clearly wrong with the Windows updates.
If anyone can please tell me how to avoid this, it would be much appreciated.
    Michael

    Hi Michael,
"  This is a recent phenomenon"
Have you made any modifications to the machines ?
To resolve this issue ,running the built-in troubleshoot tool is a very good beginning .It will automatically diagnostic the windows update components and check the configurations for us .
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\Fix problems with Windows Update
If there are antivirus software installed in these machines, please turn off them temporarily to have a check.
The command line included in the link as S.Sengupta posted is very useful and convenient to repair the windows corrupted files .We can have a try .
    "sfc /scannow" ,"DISM.EXE /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth "
We also can check the windowsupdate.log for more information to troubleshoot this issue .
     Run "windowsupdate.log"
If you have trouble in analyzing the log ,please upload them to the OneDrive and paste the link here .
    Best regards

I accidently replaced a file with another.  Can I undo my action?
I had two files named graphics.  One was on my desktop and another was within another file called solitarie.  I move the one on my desktop (wrong file) into the solitarie file and was asked if I wanted to replace the graphics file in the solitarie folder (the correct one).  I said yes accidently and then remembered that I had made a mistake.  If I use undo, it only move the wrong file back to the desktop.  Is there an undo of replace?

Sorry, but's that's why you get the warning. "Replace" means just that - the new file over-writes the old one. There is no undo.

Help please I can't save any documents now! Thanks in advance all, it is truly appreciated. how can find the hidden temporary files using the terminal what do i type in?

It's more likely a failed Erase Free Space, which creates a huge temporary file; that's why it looks like you have no more available drive space. You can recover from this. See these links

  • I mistakenly told Firefox to go Full Screen and now I can't get it to undo and I can't access anything else.

I downloaded the latest Firefox. In trying to learn some of the new features, I hit the Full Screen option. It went to full screen and now I do not have access to the functions I need. I can't do anything! I need to find out how to undo my mistake or I will not be able to use firefox at all. I can't even get to the portion where I can go to my gmail.

Have you tried pressing the F11 key on your keyboard? It toggles Fullscreen mode.

  • CO table growth rate

    Hi,
We have gone line with SAP ECC for retail scenario recently. Our database is growing 3 GB per day which includes both data and index growth.
    Modules configured:
SD (Retail), MM, HR and FI/CO.
COPA is configured for reporting purpose to find article wise sales details per day and COPA summarization has not been done.
Total sales order created per day on an average: 4000
Total line items of sales order on an average per day: 25000
Total purchase order created per day on an avearage: 1000
Please suggest whether database growth of 3 GB per day is normal for our scenario or should we do something to restrict the database growth.

Is there anyway we can reduce the datagrowth without affecting the functionalities configured?
Is COPA summarization configuration will help reducing the size of the FI/CO tables growth?

In one of our database, one table has a very fast growth rate.
How can I check if the table growth is normal or not.
    Please advice
The question is, what is a "very fast growth rate"?
What are the DDL of the table resp. the data types that the table uses?
One potential issue could be the way the table is populated: If you constantly insert into the table using a direct-path insert (APPEND hint) and subsequently delete rows then your table will grow faster than required because the deleted rows won't be reused by the direct-path insert because it always writes above the current high-water mark of your table.
May be you want to check your application for such an case if you think that the table grows faster than the actual amount of data it contains.
You could use the ANALYZE command to get information about empty blocks and average free space in the blocks or use the procedures provided by DBMS_SPACE package to find out more about the current usage of your segment.

  • The growth of the internet routing table + LISP

I have been challenged with the task of putting together a 15-20 minute presentation of how I might go about solving the problem of the growth of the internet routing table.
If I am understanding the question correctly - as the internet grows so will the number of IPv4 and (moreso) IPv6 prefixes that appear in the global internet routing table. This will mean that the PE and P routers in a Service Provider network will find themselves having to deal with more prefixes that will in turn increase the possibility of bogons interferring with proper routing and increase the load on the routers themselves.
Besides being a very open ended question, I am trying to look at it from the perspective of a Service Provider (whom I work for) and have come up with the following options (admittedly this is only after a quick google on the topic):
    > Improvise in the short term by adjusting CAM table allocation
    > Use selective hearing by filtering prefixes that are not important
    > Use external assistance like LISP and DNS
    > Spend Money and upgrading existing routers to handle the load
Obviously with only a 20 minute window I cannot talk about much and I would like the options to be innnovative and interesting. LISP seems like an interesting option and I would like to learn about it - however I am having trouble tracking down resources that give a basic introduction to exactly what and how LISP works (every time I try and search for it a get pushed to sites talking about the programming language ).
So this leads me to two questions:
    1. Is there anything important, vital or interesting that I have not included in my quickly put together list above.
    2. Is anyone aware for a good site/resource that explains LISP from a beginners/tutorial-type perspective.
