Unexpected parallelism in Oracle 11g
Oracle documentation says that, when setting PARALLEL_DEGREE_POLICY to AUTO following things happen:
1.A SQL statement is issued.
2.The statement is parsed and the optimizer determines the execution plan.
3.The threshold limit specified by the PARALLEL_MIN_TIME_THRESHOLD initialization parameter is checked.
a.If the execution time is less than the threshold limit, the SQL statement is run serially.
b.If the execution time is greater than the threshold limit, the statement is run in parallel based on the DOP that the optimizer calculates.
The settings which I use are as follows:
PARALLEL_DEGREE_POLICY = AUTO;
PARALLEL_MIN_TIME_THRESHOLD = AUTO;
So this means that parallelism should not apply to queries where execution time is below 10 seconds since PARALLEL_MIN_TIME_THRESHOLD = AUTO.
I executed an SQL statement which takes only 2 seconds to execute and when I checked on the V$PQ_SSESTAT, I could see that the "Queries Parallelized" in that is set to 1 for the last query.
How did that happen since parallelism should not be applied in this situation?
Please help me in understanding the scenario.
Regards
ORA_QUEST
I'm just saying that that's where you need to look first - just look at the execution plans for the serial plan - the estimated time is right there.
I said that this is were you needed to start a couple of days ago.
A 10053 trace might give you some further comments on the parallel decision process.
At the end of the day, the optimizer's decision making is only as good as the information coming in.
If the various estimates it makes are based on out of date or inaccurate information or are limited for some reason, then yes decisions might be suboptimal.

Can we do oracle 11g software installation in parallel to SAP upgrade
Hi Basis Expert,
I need your inputs for one of this query
The query is. Can we do oracle 11g software installation in parallel to SAP upgrade when the system is in Downtime phase.
The idea is running SAP upgrade and in parallel running oracle 11g software installation. So that we can reduced the time.
Please share your valuable inputs.
Regards,
Anil Shenoy.yes, of course.
using different environment during the installation of the new engine, you could install the new oracle home 11 also tomorrow (including the SBP).
infact, before the ./RUNINSTALLER you have to set the environment
setenv ORACLE_HOME /oracle/SID/112_64
setenv ORACLE_HOME_SRC /oracle/SID/102_64
setenv ORACLE_HOME_TGT /oracle/SID/11202
setenv LIBPATH $ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LIBPATH
setenv PATH /oracle/SID/112_64/bin: $PATH -
We use Oracle 11g DB on windows2008R2.
We wrote very long and heavy SELECT SQL query usign several table join and sub-queries and it take very long time to get result.
We did SQL statement tuning as much as we can do so far. ( I will get the Execution Plan and ADDM, etc access right)
I today notice about Parallel query function.
Where could I write parallel hint phrases in very long SELECT SQL query ?
In each selected tables like below ?
/sample in Oracle Doc/
SELECT /*+ PARALLEL(employees 4) PARALLEL(departments 4)
USE_HASH(employees) ORDERED */ MAX(salary), AVG(salary)
FROM employees, departments
WHERE employees.department_id = departments.department_id
GROUP BY employees.department_id;You need to be careful with some of the examples in the docs. The example you quote includes an unnecessary join. Before considering parallel query, it should have been re-written to this:
SELECT MAX(salary), AVG(salary)
FROM employees
WHERE department_id is not null
GROUP BYdepartment_id;
Later versions of the CBO may do this re-write for you, but it is important to understand why the SQL is inefficient before throwing parallel servers at it. Are you sure that all your joins are actually necessary? (I know you are just going to say "yes", but you might want to think about it first.) -
The danger of memory target in Oracle 11g - request for discussion.
Hello, everyone.
This is not a question, but kind of request for discussion.
I believe that many of you heard something about automatic memory management in Oracle 11g.
The concept is that Oracle manages the target size of SGA and PGA. Yes, believe it or not, all we have to do is just to tell Oracle how much memory it can use.
But I have a big concern on this. The optimizer takes the PGA size into consideration when calculating the cost of sort-related operations.
So what would happen when Oracle dynamically changes the target size of PGA? Following is a simple demonstration of my concern.

1. Oracle invalidates the query when internal pga aggregate size changes, which is quite natural.
2. With changed pga aggregate size, Oracle recalculates the cost. These are excerpts from the both of the 10053 trace files.

Bug Fix Control Environment10053 trace file clearly says that Oracle recalculates the cost of the query with the change of internal pga aggregate target size. So, there is a great danger of unexpected plan change while Oracle dynamically controls the memory segments.
I believe that this is a desinged behavior, but the negative side effect is not negligible.
I just like to hear your opinions on this behavior.
Do you think that this is acceptable? Or is this another great feature that nobody wants to use like automatic tuning advisor?

(I'm still in dark age on this automatic memory target management of 11g. More research in need!)
I think that this is very clear and natural behavior. I just want to point out that this would result in unwanted catastrophe under special cases, especially with some logic holes and bugs.

How to uninstall Oracle 11g Database Options?
I've come across a problem. A company that developed an application, installed Oracle 11g EE.
I guess they would use all default options. Some of them are licensed separately, and are not used. So I need to uninstall them.
For example, I see that it is installed "Advanced Compression". I tried to uninstall it from the Universal Installer, but there isn't an option.Good news for my company.
There has never been used "Advanced Compression" and for everything else we are licensed.

Oracle 11g R2 hangs after parameter processes incresed
Hi,
I am running an Oracle 11g R2 on a Solaris box. I was getting some Critical alert messages about the "Process Limit %" metric. So I decided to increase the value of the processes database parameter from 200 to 400. After that the system is very slow and hanging with a lot of "Log file sync" and "log file parallel write" events.
I have rolled it back to 200 and now the system is working fine again, but I am concern about getting again the alert about the "process limit %".
Is there any other parameter that I need to tune together with the increase of the proccesses on?
Regards,It looks like the issue is not related with the processes change.
If I reboot then db and then restart the process it runs fine. Something happens during on the db during the day that make the nightly schedule task takes forever. When I checked it this morming there were a lot of commit activity. If I cancel the process and then try to restart it again without rebooting the db the problem persist. But if I bounce the database and then run it, it will complete fine.
Below is AWR periord comparisson report. The first period is when I cancelled the process and then tried to run it again. The second one is after the database reboot.
I appreciate any advice.

Oracle 11g database Connection & Response are very slow
I have an ORACLE 11g R2 on lRed Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3 (Tikanga).
initially it was working fine.
Now a days while attempting to connect into the database from network using @service_name
it takes a lot of time to establish the connection and even it gets connected the query response time is very high.
on the other hand if I connect from the native database machine's terminal without @service_name it works fine & the response time is convincing. But even from the native database machine's terminal with @service_name it is giving me the same pain.
can any body help me how to fix this.
Thanks in advance..
Arkeshthanks for the reply & Query

SachinHi,
Thanks for your reply, but your assumption is incorrect that I did not read the error message in the documentation. I read it many times, but could not correlate it with any wrongdoing.
solaris64:102b$ oerr TNS 12533

Oracle 11G Configuration Issue
Hi All,
I am in the process of installing Oracle Forms and Reports 11g[11.1.2].
I have installed Oracle 11g, getting a issue while configuring it.
INST – 07249 :An Unexpected error occurred during the validation of Middleware home location
INST-07286: Specified Oracle Middleware home locationdoes not have version 10.3.5 of weblogic server. If the version is incorrect then configuring with the weblogic server will fail
WLS 10.3.5 have been installed, and I can access the Admin console.
I did checked for the WLS version in its registry file created on WLS installation to confirm its version number.
I have used the same middle ware home location which I used to install the WLS.
Please can you get me some information to overcome this issue? This is well explained from user's guide:
Stopping Node Manager Before Installing Oracle Forms and Reports (Windows Only)
If you are installing Oracle Forms and Reports on a Microsoft Windows operating system, you must make sure that the Node Manager utility that was installed with Oracle WebLogic Server is stopped before you begin the installation:
1. Verify the Oracle WebLogic Server Node Manager utility is stopped. If it is running, kill the process.
2. Determine if the nodemanager.properties file is present in the WebLogic_Home\common\nodemanager directory.
*1. If the nodemanager.properties file is not present, continue installing Oracle Forms and Reports.*
*2. If the nodemanager.properties file does exist, open it and verify that the ListenPort parameter is included and that it is set. If the ListenPort parameter is not included or set, edit the nodemanager.properties file so that it is similar to the*
following, where NODE_MANAGER_LISTEN_PORT represents the port the Node Manager listens on, such as 5556:
*3. ListenPort=NODE_MANAGER_LISTEN_PORT* -
