Unique list from range

Is there any way to build a unique data set from a range?
What I am looking to do is build a table of categories/values and then want to sum the values based on the categories.
For example:
Category Value
Item A $12.00
Item B $10.00
Item A $20.00
Item B $15.00
Turns into:
Category Value
Item A $32.00
Item B $25.00
Is there any way to do this?

You can use the SUMIF equation.

• Getting unique values from a list using XSL

I have a requirement to dynamically generate a unique list of categories that will be used to populate a drop-down box.
The XML that is being sent is in a format similar to this...

random text1

random text2

random text3

What i need is to be able to generate a list of all the unique "category" items, without having any duplicates.... eg in the example above, the list would be "marketing, fishing, hunting, research, development, industry"
I've been using the following xsl, which works, but only when there is a single
in each
node, but i cant work out how to extend this to look at ALL the categories in the
. When i add additional
nodes, the xsl stops processing them. There was a lot of trial and error to get this far, but really struggling to get any further.
<xsl:param name="cat">all</xsl:param>
<xsl:key name="uniqueCategoryKey" match="item" use="./category"/>

all
<xsl:for-each select="//item[generate-id() = generate-id(key('uniqueCategoryKey', ./category))]">
<xsl:choose>
<xsl:when test="$cat = category">
<xsl:value-of select="category"/>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:otherwise>
<xsl:value-of select="category"/>
</xsl:otherwise>
</xsl:choose>
</xsl:for-each>

Any help appreciated on how to proceed
Thanks

Try changing these two lines:
<xsl:key name="uniqueCategoryKey" match="/" use="/item/category"/>
<xsl:for-each select="//[generate-id() = generate-id(key('uniqueCategoryKey', /item/category))]">And go back and read the article which you got the <xsl:key> idea from. It should explain why it did things that way. Understand that explanation and you should be able to modify the code to do what you like.

• Extracting unique values from (non-category) columns for chart

Hello:
I've created a worksheet to keep inventory of my Intellivision games. It has the following columns:
Publisher
Class
Network
Title
Quantity
(misc...)
The "Class" represents whether the game is "complete in box" or "loose cartridge." The "Network" represents the general genre or game cateogory. The quantity is how much I have of each.
I have set the first three columns as categories: Publisher, Class, and Network. I also created a bar chart based on the Title and Quantity columns, to show how many I have of each.
The problem I have is that, although it looks real cool and helps me keep the games organized, since a title can appear in more than one "Class" (e.g., I can have one in box, and two loose), the chart includes duplicates, and they are not grouped together.
Is there a way that I can create a graph (or a secondary table) that exctracts only the UNIQUE values from a column that may contain duplicates?
Note that I don't want to put the "Title" column in a category. I want to group by the three major categories and list the games on each.

From the Numbers Help Menu, download the Numbers User Guide. Read the first three or four chapters to get a feel for the app. It's well written and won't take long to read that much.
Then use the Table of Contents and the Search tool to get additional specific directions.
First, delete all unneeded Rows and Columns from your data table. If you have patches of data in a larger table, Cut the patches and Paste them to a blank Sheet area to create separate dedicated tables for your various needs. These small special purpose tables are like Named Ranges in Excel. Name them in the Sheets Pane.
This is how Numbers was intended to be used. The User Guide will describe how to reference cells in one table from expressions in another table. If you use the point and click method of creating references from within the equation editor it won't matter a bit that the tables are separate.

• Errors executing bulk query when updating a Sharepoint Linked List from Access

Hi all,
I have a Sharepoint list that is a Linked List with MS Access. It has just under 5,000 items (4,864), thus meaning it avoids the reduction in functionality lists of greater than 5,000 items have.
Among the list are five calculated columns. These take the information from another column (different employee numbers), and by using a formula produce a clickable link to my company's Directory page, where that particular employee's info is displayed. I'm
not sure if these five columns are relevant to my query, but I'm mentioning them in case.
My problem is this: Frequently when I run any query on the list that updates the list, I get this error: "There were errors executing the bulk query or sending the data to the server. Reconnect the tables to resolve the
conflicts or discard the pending changes".
When I review the errors, it says they conflict with errors a previous user made (with that previous user being me). It frequently highlights several columns, despite the info in them being identical, and the calculated columns (with the original showing
the value they contained and the new showing #VALUE! (as Access can't display the formulas).
However, if I click Retry All Changes, all the update stick and everything seems fine. Why is this happening? It's proving very annoying and is really stopping the automation of my large number of queries. A list of 5000 items isn't particular big (and they've
got roughly 100 columns, although I didn't think that was too large either, given Excel's 200+ column limit).
Is this due to poor query design and SQL? Is this due to connectivity issues (which I doubt, as my line seems perfect)? Is this due to Access tripping over itself and not executing the update on each row in the table, but rather executing them concurrently
and locking itself up? I'm at wit's end about it and really need to get this sorted.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi amartin903,
According to your description, my understanding is that you got an error when you used a linked list from Access.
The table that you are updating is a linked table that does not have a primary key or a unique index. Or, the query or the form is based on a linked table that does not have a primary key or a unique index. Please add the primary key or a unique index.

I hope this helps.

• Print Individual task Lists from Project 2010

Hi
I have a routine which prints individual task lists from a Project Plan using VBA. This routine is currently being piloted and they have advised that not all resources have a task list produced. when I step through the code the Resource numbers
appears in this order:
1,3,18,7,8,9,11,12,13,14,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25
Task lists are produced for each of the above resources. However this misses resource numbers 2,4,5,6,10,15,16,17 and I have no idea why. I have supplied my code below. Any advice/guidance appreciated. You will note that the task
lists are exported to a pre-defined spreadsheet template.
Sub PrintResourceCharts()
Dim xlApp As Excel.Application
Dim xlRange As Excel.Range
Dim rName As String
Dim Tsk As Task
Dim Res As Resource

Kill "D:\Task List Templates\Task Lists\*.*"
Finish:
'Save File Location
fName = "D:\Task List Templates\Task Lists\"
'Start Excel and Create a new Workbook
Set xlApp = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
xlApp.Visible = True
'Export Resource and Task details
For Each Res In ActiveProject.Resources
If Res.Assignments.Count > 0 Then
Row = 5
xlApp.Workbooks.Open ("D:\Task List Templates\Task List Template.xlsm")
BookNam = xlApp.ActiveWorkbook.Name
Set s = xlApp.Workbooks(BookNam).Worksheets(1)
For Each Ass In Res.Assignments
Set xlRange = s.Range("A5")
If Ass.PercentWorkComplete < 100 Then
With xlRange
rName = Ass.ResourceName
s.Range("A" & Row).Value = Ass.ResourceName
s.Range("B" & Row).Value = Ass.TaskUniqueID
s.Range("D" & Row).Value = Ass.Text1
s.Range("E" & Row).Value = Ass.Start
s.Range("G" & Row).Value = Ass.Finish
End With
End If
Row = Row + 1
Set xlRange = xlRange.Offset(Row, 0) 'Point to next row
Next
xlApp.Visible = True
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
If rName = "" Then
GoTo Finished
End If
xlApp.ActiveWorkbook.SaveAs FileName:= _
"D:\Task List Templates\Task Lists\" & rName & ".xlsm", FileFormat:= _
xlOpenXMLWorkbookMacroEnabled, CreateBackup:=False
rName = ""
xlApp.ActiveWorkbook.Close savechanges:=False
Application.DisplayAlerts = True
End If
Next
Finished:
xlApp.Application.Quit
Set xlApp = Nothing
MsgBox ("Individual Task Lists have now been produced....")
End Sub

Tony,
You said you step through the code and it picks up resource 1. What happens when the loop gets to resource 2? Note: since resource 1 may have several assignments and stepping through them all could take some time, I sometimes use a stop statement in the
outer loop to make it a little easier to "catch" what I'm looking for. For example, you could put this right after the For Each Res...
If Res.ID = 2 then stop
Then step through and see what happens.

• Reading a multilevel list from MS Word Doc and converting it into an HTML nested list using C#

I can achieve the above for a single level list as follows:
foreach (Paragraph item in app.Selection.Range.ListParagraphs)
item.Range.InsertBefore("
");
item.Range.InsertAfter("
");
Using C#, how can I programmatically convert a multilevel list (like the following) in a Word doc to a nested HTML list? Note: The bullet icons are not important. Thanks..Nam
List from Word Doc:
A
B
C
D
E
F
G
H
I

Hi Nam,
>>how can we programmatically determine the start and end elements of the sub-list with elements C,DE,F,G in the example of my original post? <<
We can check the begin and end elements of the sub-list by the
ListLevelNumber. For example, the sub-list's ListLevelNumber start at 2 by default. Here is the code to find the begin element for your reference:
Sub FindBeginSubElement()
For i = 1 To Selection.Range.ListParagraphs.Count
If Selection.Range.ListParagraphs(i).Range.ListFormat.ListLevelNumber = 2 Then
Debug.Print "begin sub element:" & Selection.Range.ListParagraphs(i).Range.Text
Exit Sub
End If
Next i
End Sub
Also we can loop the selection in reverse order to find the end element for the sub-list.
Hope it is helpful.

• MDX Distinct() not returning unique list of tuples

Environment
Server version 9.2.0.2
BSO database
essmsh client
Behavior
Using Distinct on a Static List of Product members
Distinct( { [ABC], [DEF], [ABC], [GHI] } )
results in
{ [ABC], [DEF], [GHI] }
as I expected.
In a hierarchy where ABC and DEF are also shared members in alternate hierarchies
[Product].levels(0).Members
results in
{ [ABC], [DEF], [ABC*], [DEF*], [GHI] }
where the (*) members are the shared instances.
Applying the Distinct function
Distinct( [Product].levels(0).Members )
results in
{ [ABC], [DEF], [ABC*], [DEF*], [GHI] }
which is NOT what I expected.
Q1) Any insight as to why Distinct is behaving in this fashion?
Q2) How can I get a unique list of members from a function that returns a set of non-unique tuples?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Are you telling that filterdup is case sensitive ? if that is your problem why not try downase / upcase while
storing to the list and then try filterdup.

• Accessing an Array List from another class

Hi, I was a member on here before, but I forgot my password and my security question is wrong.
My question is how do I access a private arraylist from a different class in the same package?
What I am trying to do is the following (hard to explain).
Make a picking client for a shop, so that when an order is recieved, the picker can click on the orders button, and view all of the current orders that have not been completed. This Pick client has its own user interface, in a seperate class from where the BoughtList array is created, in the cashier client. The boughtlist is created when the cashier puts in the product number into the cashier client and clicks buy. I seem to be having trouble accessing the list from another class. Once the order is completed the cashier clicks bought and the list is reset. There is another class in a different pagage that processes some of the functions of the order, eg newOrder().
Yes it is for Uni so I dont need / want the full answers, jist something to get started. Also please dont flame me, I have done many other parts of this project, just having trouble getting started on this one.
Here is the code for the cashier client. The code for the Pick client is almost the same, I just need to make the code that displays the orders.

}

(disclaimer: I did not read through your Swing code, as I find that painful)
My question is how do I access a private arraylist from a different class in the same
package?Provide a public accessor method (getMyPrivateArrayList())

• Extracting unique records from two different tables record

Hello,
In the following code of two different tables www.testing.com exists in both tables. I want to compare two different columns of the two different tables to get unique records.
SQL> select unique(videoLinks) from saVideos where sa_id=21;
VIDEOLINKS
www.testing.com
SQL> ed
Wrote file afiedt.buf
1* select unique(picLinks) from saImages where sa_id=21
SQL> /
PICLINKS
test
test14
www.hello.com
www.testing.comThanks & best regards

Unfortunatly you didn't mention the expected output. I guess it would be the one line
"www.testing.com"
in that case simply join the two tables.
select *
from saVideos v
join saImages i on i.sa_id = v.sa_id and i.picLinks = v.videoLinks
where v.sa_id=21;If needed then you could change the select list to retrieve only distinct values.
select unique v.sa_id, v.videolinks
from saVideos v
join saImages i on i.sa_id = v.sa_id and i.picLinks = v.videoLinks
where v.sa_id=21;I usually avoid distinct/unique whereever possible. This requires the database to do a sort and makes the query slow.

• Create LIST from CFLOOP

Hi all: I'm trying to create a list of 'ages' using CFLOOP
with user input from 2 form fields - FirstAge & LastAge,
filling in the ranges in between. Here is the relevant code:
<cfloop index="i" from="#FirstAge#" to="#LastAge#"
step="1">
<cfset age = #i#>
</cfloop>
<cfset ageList = ValueList(age)>
Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?

Build the list inside the loop, one age at a time. Something
like the code below should work.

• I've a new account on iMac. When composing an email the contact list does not show up on the bar. WWhen I start keying in a name, it comes up with the address. How do I engage the contact list from the email?

I've a new account on iMac. When composing an email the contact list does not show up on the bar, which would allow me to select the persons I want to include on the distribution of the email. When I start keying in a name in the email, it comes up with the person's address, which shows it is synced. How do I engage the contact list from the email like I do on my old account (where a contact list icon shows up, along with the "attach" and other icons) ?

With the New Message window open, go to the View menu and select "Customize Toolbar...".
In the screen that opens, drag the item labelled "Address" into the Toolbar area of the New Message window, then click the "Done" button.
That item should be then added to the Toolbar for the New Message window.
Note that the main Mail window and the New Message window (as well as the separate message window if you open a message that way) use different toolbars - the settings/inclusions for one do not carry over to another.

• Populate drop-down list from multiple text fields.

Just to begin, I am brand new to this application and brand new to coding in general. Anyways, this is what I am trying to accomplish. I need to populate a drop-down list from multiple text fields. I am able to populate one item using this in the calculate event:
TextField1.rawValue
After I type text in TextField1 and hit enter, it displays the text in the drop-down list. I need to do this but with more than just one text field to populate more options for the drop-down list. I will also need to do something similar with populating a drop-down list from selections made in multiple other drop-down lists.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thank you for your suggestion Geo Kaiser. With that, I was able to populate my drop-down lists, but now when I select an option from the drop-down list, the selection dissapears. The selection will appear briefly in the box but then dissapears although my drop-down list options remain there. Here is the code I am using for my text field to drop-down list:
DropDownList1.clearItems()
DropDownList1.addItem(TextField1)
DropDownList1.addItem(TextField2)
And here is my code for my drop-down list to populate another drop-down list:
DropDownList3.clearItems()
DropDownList3.addItem(DropDownList1)
DropDownList3.additem(DropDownList2)
Thanks again for your help. By the way, I am using Adobe Designer 7.0.

• Getting unique values from an arraylist

Hi
I have an arraylist that contains stringbuffer objects. The arraylist has duplicate values of the objects. I have to create another arraylist with only the unique values from the first arraylist. I tried it many ways and using many functions, but no luck. Can someone provide me the code for this , as i need to do this urgently.
Thank U
Mansoor,

> Sanity check: when are StringBuffers equal?
Same character sequence.
[EDIT] Or so I thought. Just tested, and found I was wrong. A quick glance at the API confirmed my error; StringBuffer doesn't override Object.equals().

• Is there an easy way of creating a distribution list from an email with multiple addresses? Those addresses are not in your contacts already, and don't need to be.

I want to be able to take all the email addresses someone else has used to distribute an email and create the same distribution list for myself for future use. I don't want to add all those people to anywhere in my contacts list. I just want them to be in my "new distribution list", like "soccer families", etc. I tried to copy and paste, but didn't get anywhere. Maybe I was close, or maybe it isn't possible. Thoughts?

I don't want them in contacts because they are simply a related group (like my sons current soccer team). People I may never need to email again after a sports season. I don't want to have to have these people in my contacts permanently.
You don't. When the season is over, delete them.
But, the text clipping should work.
The next IOS should have a feature "create mailing list from distribution list". A fast and simple way to retain a distribution list from an email you received. People get copied all the time using distribution lists they may want to reuse easily, like school, sports or work groups. Oh well.
How is that any different from adding them to Contacts? Here's the feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
There is a set of Mail Scripts that has a function to Add Addresses from an email to any group. But, it doesn't work with Mountain Lion.
