Unix Command Error 7 and 9?

So I'm just starting to attempt to set up a qmaster render farm using After Effects CS3 on a small test setup before we try anything large. The issue is - it took well over 20 hours (somewhere in the neighborhood of 23-24 hours) to do what would take After Effects on its' own no more than 5 minutes. I was only rendering out 1000 frames of a comp which didn't have any heavy effects on it as well.
My current setup:
2 Intel Mac Pro workstations with 8cores, 8gb ram, osx 10.5.5 as Service nodes.
1 G5 Mac Pro workstation running as the cluster controller.
The issues I ran into: numerous Unix Command Error: 7, Unix Command Error: 9 errors. Out of the 1000 frames that were set to be rendered, 15 got rendered out as psd's (frames #: 1,111,333,370,481,518,556,630,667,703,740,778,852,815,963). The controller was trying to access aerender on the controller itself even though I don't have any rendering services setup to run on the controller.

Unix command Line input and output

Has anybody used Forte for now window application. Passing values through
command line and get put as a return value. I am able to call Forte and
pass input values but I do not know who to get the return value. Here is
the shell script that I am running:

The start class will return a string value after processing the request. I
can use task.lgr.putline to output to the screen but that is not what I
would like to do. I want to get the return value assigned to a variable in
the shell script. One thing I do not know is that if Forte return a string
that the script can use. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
Did you try to set Task.Part.OperatingSystem.ExitStatus ? But, the ExitStatus is an integer.
If you really need a string, I would use ExitStatus to know how it finished and an environment variable (Task.Part.OperatingSystem.SetEnv() to position it in your Tool code) to read the string back in the script.

Export Unix Commands Templates in ARD

I was looking for a way to export my unix command templates and came across this thread without a conclusion.

After digging around myself, I found that the com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist mentioned in the previous didn't contain my unix commands.
Long story short, they are located in Users/$username/Library/Application Support/Remote Desktop/Presets/UnixCommandTask.plist
Copy the UnixCommandTask.plist around and you're set.
Should work for 10.6 and up and maybe below too.

you can easily change the serial to a different one
after copying the plist file from within ARD.
Preferences > General > Change Serial Number
so why is it not a good idea?
Cause the preference files stores all clients data.
So if I want to use that preferencesfile to another client,
it will surely show the other clients data like missing.
I havent tried this. Just my guess, but you right about
the serial.
Send the unix commands:
networksetup -help
and
systemsetup -help
This commands just show the build in templates commands.
I want to export my own templates, without remaking them
on every clients server. No big deal but anyway...

How to generate a empty file in AL11 using ABAP and unix command

Hi Experts,
when load infopackage triggers it will search file from AL11 if file is available it will get loaded successfully. When there is no file in AL11 error while opening file (orgin A) and the load will fail. At this level i have to write a abap code using unix command to generate a empty file.
Is there any way to achieve the above requirement.

Hi,
If i get your requirement properly then you want to create a blank file if there is no file on the application server so that your infopackage does not fail, am i correct.
If this is your requirement then this can be easily done if you use process chain to load the file via infopackage. Follow the following steps:
1. Add a ABAP program before the infopackage and check if the file is present on the server or not. Use a simple ABAP statement OPEN DATASET <FNAME>. Check the SY-SUBRC after this statement if it is not 0 then it means that the file does not exist on the application server.
2. Once you have established that the file is not present create a flat file using a code similar to the below one
OPEN DATASET FILENAME FOR OUTPUT IN TEXT MODE
MESSAGE D_MSG_TEXT.
IF SY-SUBRC NE 0.
WRITE: 'File cannot be opened. Reason:', D_MSG_TEXT.
EXIT.
ENDIF.
* Transferring Data
LOOP AT INT_table.
TRANSFER INT_table-field1 TO FILENAME.
ENDLOOP.
* Closing the File
CLOSE DATASET FILENAME.
3. Add your infopackage step after this ABAP program in your process chain.

Problems with ARD and SwUpd Unix Command

Hi everybody
I have a problem sending UNIX commands to my clients, I work in a school with 500 macs, with 10.4 and 10.5 systems and all the computers download the updates from my Software Update Server, but when I try to send the command from ARD (sudo softwareupdate -i -a) the clients attemp to connect to Apple's servers instead my own SUS. It seems when I try to install with sudo command, overrides the address of my server.

I have the exact same problem with two PowerMac G5's. I need to have full resolution on the remote G5 which has no monitor connected, but only get to choose between PAL and NTSC TV resolution. This is really annoying, and in my opinion a major bug in ARD 3.1 and below. Why is the user forced to see such a small remote window if the remote computer is capable of much more?

UNIX command and SXPG_COMMAND_EXECUTE

For that i need to read source dir and target dir from selection screen.
I wrote UNIX command as follows:

where i m specifying the src and target dir.
so i need to pass the parmeters as srcdir and targetdir?
how should i do it?
i knw i need to create a command in SM69,then what will be the parameters in that case?
and how to call that from ABAP ?
if anybody give me explaination w.r.t. coding steps then that will be gr8.
but pls specify SM69 steps and ABAP both

Error message when using one of the built in unix commands for software upd

I have RD3 admin software installed on my dedicated admin power mac and I have a test power mac machine on my local network. I can install packages fine using the package installer, however whenever i use the built in unix commands to list available updates on that target machinie, download available updates, or install available updates, i get the following error, any clues? ive tried running as current logged on user option, and the ARD User account I created on the machine, I can observe, control, curtain everything else, just these unix commands fail.

Check to make sure that the command is running as root. The template should enter that automatically, but try again and make sure it does.

Cannot Drag and Drop Computer Name onto saved unix command

I am using ARD 3.3. When trying to drag a computer from Scanner to a Unix command on the sidebar, it does not populate in the task. You have to manually open the command, and then drop into the Computer list. Deleting the com.apple.remotedesktop.plist will correct the problem for about 1 day, but then it goes back to normal. Is there a setting that I am overlooking?

Unix command to click button on dialog box and close windows?

I administer an elementary school computer lab of 35 eMacs all with OS 10.4.7 and with ARD 3.0. Our network server configuration requires a mounted server on each desktop in order to administer certain software packages we use. Every morning at start-up I have to walk around and manually click "Connect" on the dialog boxes. Then, with this configuration, each time a server is mounted, it opens up a Finder Window on the host machine so I've got to walk around and close windows on all the machines. I'm sure there must be an AppleScript or Unix command that I can set up to do these two tasks but I've not found it (or learned how to write it) in a few days of searching. Any suggestions?

OK guys,
I just succeeded in saving the AppleScript command as an application. I put it in the Login Items just after the servers. It worked beautifully! No more open windows exposing sensitive files to the risks of elementary students (how come the mounted volumes always appear on the desktop even when the "hide" button is checked?). It would be great if the mounted volumes were not showing at least in a setting like a school computer lab.
Now, I'm still dealing with the mounting process requiring me to manually click on "Connect" every time. The Student account doesn't even have a password just to make such things easier. Still the process displays this:
(Oh well, I guess I can't insert a ScreenShot.)
Here's what it says: Connect to the file server "server name."
Connect as: Registered User
Name: "account name"
√Remember password in keychain
(and then two buttons) Cancel or Connect
That's where I'm at right now. My district Tech. Support folks say that there's no way to avoid the dialog box but John seems to do it OK. They also pointed me to an online source (www.bombich.com) that I haven't yet checked out.

How do I find the version of Informatica, Cognos and DataStage using a unix command on my Unix machine SunOS 5.8.
I don't want to use front end to find this information.

Um ... typically you would ask the Informatica, Cognos and DataStage people. (All of whom are not part of Oracle afaik ... [yet])

This makes no sense. You don't configure a listener nor a tnsnames.ora "in a database".   I hope this is just a language issue and not reflective of a fundamental misunderstanding of how tns works.

Learning Unix commands (and automator/applescript) for a dummy :-)

Hi:
I've been supporting macs for many years and have done mostly user end support with all the various GUI tools. I've never been a programmer, never had the mind for it, etc.
However, I've now reached the point where I need to do some kind of scripting and I'm looking for some good learning/training tools. I was wondering if anyone might have suggestions about the best training / reference guides to go about doing this. Right now, it's as if I need to play a little Beethoven, haven't learned Chopsticks yet and I'm trying to find out how to play chopsticks while learning a little Beethoven at the same time. (how's that for a metaphor?)
For example: For my first project, I have to set up a backup for some laptop users so that certain files will be backed up. The need is different for each user, so this is why setting up a script would be easiest. My goals in the setting up this project are:
- Make the script run at logout (logout hook)
- check to make sure the network volume I want to backup to is present; if not present, stop the script
- Use either cp or rsync to copy the files/directories to the shared volume.
I've tried to look around the internet for help, examples, etc, but I've been unable to put together exactly the commands I need to sue to accomplish my task.
Any suggestions would be great.

for creating logout hooks, http://www.bombich.com/mactips/loginhooks.html might help.
Also, in Terminal, type man launchd.plist if you can think of a scenario where you could implement a "cron-like" solution. Then refer to Apple's own periodic daily/weekly/monthly launchd plists (com.apple.periodic-*ly.plist) at/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/. There are more triggers available than just day/date/time, such as "watchPaths" and "RunAtLoad." Home grown launchd plists ones should go in /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or Library/LaunchAgents, not /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/. Also man launchd (no ".plist").

well when I set required password for XX minutes... I see that
/Users/USERNAME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist modfication date & time changes to the current time & date... hMMM maybe the setting we want is stored here? Can we test this?
If I check require password and then do the terminal command:

turn it off
run the terminal command;

(900 seconds / 60 seconds = 15 minutes)
