Unix Environment variable for connect string in SQL*Plus
I am using some environment variables to connect to a sql*plus session in unix.
they are exported as part of a file which contains the following and gets executed through the .profile.
export db_username=xxx
export db_password=xxx
export db_name=xxx
i have created a file abc.sql which contains the following
connect $db_username/$db_password@$db_name
Now, I have a shell script which uses this file inside it to connect to a sql*plus session and execute some queries.
The contents of the shell script :
API_CONNECT_SQL=abc.sql
sqlplus /nolog << THEEND
WHENEVER SQLERROR EXIT SQL.SQLCODE ROLLBACK
WHENEVER OSERROR EXIT FAILURE ROLLBACK
set timing on
@${API_CONNECT_SQL}
---- do something
EXIT
THEEND
Now, the sql*plus session is able to get db_username and db_password, but not the db_name. It says "TNS service name not found".
If I hardcode some database name in place of db_name, it connects properly.
Please let me know the problem and solution as well.
Any help appreciated.
thanks,
Vijay
for me this one works

How do I use a UNIX environment variable for the path of a file name
We are running Forms 6i over the web. The forms server runs on a UNIX (HP-UX) machine.
I want to read the contents of a file, which is simple enough, using the TEXT_IO package. However, I want to reference a UNIX environment variable that specifies the file path i.e
PROCEDURE get_file IS
in_file Text_IO.File_Type;
linebuf VARCHAR2(1800);
filename VARCHAR2(200);
BEGIN
filename:= '$LOG_DIR/RCAS181.log';
in_file := Text_IO.Fopen(filename, 'r');
.....other stuff
Notice the filename string references my unix env variable '$LOG_DIR'. However, this doesnt work. If I put the full pathname it works fine.
Any suggestions ?Have a look at TOOL_ENV.GETVAR()

How to pass Unix environment variable to a SQL procedure or SQL * Plus
Can any body suggest me how to ,
How to pass Unix environment variable to a SQL procedure or SQL * Plus file..
I am trying to invoke a SQL Procedure from Unix
by passing the value of a Unix environment variable.
Is it possible..?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Srinivas JaltaruWithin your shell script you can use what is known as a "here document" which is basically a way of wrapping a call to Oracle. The following call to Oracle loops and writes rows to files with numerically increasing file names. Two unix shell variables are used, one in a select statement and one in a spool command :
<pre>
#!/bin/bash
export ORACLE_SID=DEV05
FILENO=1007351
while [ ${FILENO} -le 1008400 ]
do
FILENAME=farm_${FILENO}.txt
DUMMY=`sqlplus -s user20/user20 <<SQLSTOP
set lines 73
set pages 0
set head off
set termout off
set echo off
set feedback off
select rpad(searchx, 8)
from blastx@PRODUCTION
where searchx = ${FILENO} ### here's a shell variable
spool /export/home/user20/sql/psiblast/BACKUP2_D/${FILENAME} ### here's a shell variable
spool off
SQLSTOP`
FILENO=`expr ${FILENO} + 1`
done
exit 0

Fetching UNIX environment variables
Does anyone know of a way to fetch a UNIX environment variable into a PL/SQL variable?
Thanks
KerriHi Dave
If you are just running through the conc manager as a regular report you can not do this. At the CM layer publisher is not aware of nor can it be passed environment variables.
If you are on 11.5 why not store the sub template in the template manager and then use our URI to reference it:
xdo://APPCODE.TEMPLCODE.LANG.TERR
Check the user guide.

XSL variable and unix environment variable
Any idea how I can pass the unix environment variable to the custom XSL file? I want to be able to pass the $PO_TOP path so the file location can be derived
The below code works fine for static file location but I want it to be more generic.
<fo:block xsl:use-attribute-sets="termcond">
<xsl:if test="($print_draft = '')">
<xsl:value-of select="unparsed-text('/usr/tmp/tc.txt','UTF-8')"/>
</xsl:if>
</fo:block>
<fo:block id="last-page"/>
Thanks in advanceyou'll need to use the name(.) XPath function to test the name of the current node.

Java and UNIX environment variables
Hi folks,
am I right when I say that it is not possible to access UNIX environment variables from Java (these ones delared by the export statement)?
Cheers,
HeikoYes.. Since some OS do not have the concept of environment variables,it is directly not possible.
But using the method System.getProperties you can get
some inf about the environment.
the following links may be of some help to you

Connecting Oracle using SQL Plus in command window through LDAP settings?
Hi
Just like to know if it is possible to connect Oracle using SQL Plus with connection type as LDAP.
Generally we connect to Oracle in cmd window as
username/password@DBServiceName
Similarly is it possible to connect Oracle using SQL plus cmd window using LDAP configuration settings.
Eg:-
If my LDAP server is oid:123:456
Context is: cn=OracleContext,dc=abcdefgh,dc=com
DBService is: xyz
Regards
jcSpecify the -L command line option to SQL*Plus, i.e.:
sqlplus -L username/password@db @blah.sql
(this will prevent the second prompt for username/password if the initial login is unsuccessful for any reason, like an invalid password). -
I had put apple tv to update and later noticed that it is requesting for connecting the micro USB plus the white light blinking
Yeah.
#FAIL #FAIL #FAIL
Since our preemie woke me at 04:00 this morning and I had nothing better to do--I let the ATV3 connected to our "main viewer" 'update'.
Got a screen showing what at first bleery-eyed glance looks like a HDMI-to-iPod/iPhone/Ipad cable wanting iTunes.
Fast blinking white indicator light.
Pretty much BRICKED.
I shall attempt the USB-mircoUSB after another cup of coffee.
Really GLAD I did not update the two ATV2s.
UPSIDE: discovered that one can make the same content play on ALL ATVs simultaneously from iTunes on the main machine... -
Using variable in connection string returns 0 for variable.
hi all- I am pulling data from a visual forxpro database and the connection string is as follows:
Data Source=\\ServerName\FolderName\AR;User ID=Domain\svcAct;Provider=VFPOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=True;
I created a variable called CurrentARPath and stored the path
\\ServerName\FolderName\AR
I then tried using this variable in the Expression property of the connection string as follows:
"Data Source="+(DT_WSTR, 20)@[User::CurrentARPath] + ";User ID=Domain\\svcAct;Provider=VFPOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=True;"
However, the above expression is evaluating the variable to 0 as shown below; this is causing the connection in connection manager to go down(offline) and the OLED data source is complaining.
Data Source=0;User ID=Domain\svcAct;Provider=VFPOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=True;
any idea what i am doing wrong here? thanks in advance!What datatype is CurrentARPath? Are there any
configurations on the connection string or variable?
Which
package protection level are you using?
CurrentARPath data type - Char
there are no configurations on the connection string. one thing that i should mention is that i have created a variable called ArPath of type object and using it in the for each loop container. this variable gets populated using an execute SQL statement.
i am then mapping the vale from ArPath to CurrentARPath in the loop container.
Package protection level is default(encrypt sensitive)
thanks for the help. -
Setting substitution variable to connection string (not ODBC name)
Hi,
I havce a question regarding the use of a sub variable in SQL data loads as the data source. I find this works great when the variable is set to an existing ODBC. What I would really like to do is skip the ODBC creation step and have the substitution variable be the actual connection string, such as "Driver={SQL Native Client};Server=myServerAddress;Database=myDataBase; Uid=myUsername;Pwd=myPassword;"
Can anyone confirm or deny whether this functionality exists? As usual, the documentation is vague on the subject and doesn't exclude the possibility, but doesn't include it, either.
Thanks!My first thought is that no, you can't do that. Even if you could, I'm not sure if you'd want to do that. The easiest way to find out is simply to try. But more than likely I think you should just have "hard-coded" values for the source/target server. If you are trying to stay with the same load rule for dev/test/prod servers, you might just be better off coming up with a naming scheme that let's you keep them all separate.
Cheers,

Build error on using environment variable for CS5 on Mac
I have created a sample project using dollyx on Mac for CS5 . I have used an environment variable and defined it in Source tree of XCode preferences.
I am using snow leapard and my XCode version is 3.2.2 .
I have defined variable as IDSDK7 for /idsdk7 (which is my SDK directory). I am creating project outside SDK . While creating project with DollyX , I am giving SDK's path as $(IDSDK7) which is absolute path and not relative with respect to the project .
I am getting many build errors -----

Without using environment variable everything works fine . (i.e when I give SDK's dir path like ../../ i.e relative to my project)There is workaround : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12629395/weblogic-using-environment-variable-double-quotes-in-arguments-in-server
Just posting here for reference. Let's see if we get a different answer from anyone else. -
Getting a Unix environment variable
Hi, everyone.
I need to use a Unix enviroment variable from a form. This form
is gonna use this variable in order to be the path of another
form who is gonna be called.
In other words:
CALL_FORM( $unix_var + '/forms/myform_name' );
unix_var is what I want to get.
Thanks a lot in advance,
EduardoIt worked, Michael. Thanks a lot!
To the documentation guys at Oracle... This is how you define
the TOOL_ENV package in the Forms' help:
"The TOOL_ENV package allows you to interact with Oracle
environment variables by retrieving their values for use in
subprograms."
Suggestion: ...with Oracle environment variables AND OTHER
SYSTEM OPERATION ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES...
because this narrow definition can prevent people for trying to
use it to retrieve other NON-ORACLE environment variable via
this package. Thanks. -
The NLS_LANG environment variable for Form Builder 10g on Linux
Hi,
I have installed Oracle Developer Suite 10g on Linux Enterprise AS4 successfully,and set environment variable NLS_LANG="SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.ZHS16GBK",LANG="zh_CN.UTF-8".When i executed the following: /home/oracle/Orant/bin/frmbld
I got the error as:
X Error of failed request:BadFont(invalid Fond parameter)
Major opcode of failed request:56(X_ChangeGC)
Resource id in failed request:Ox2c000af
Serial number of failed request:3376
Current serial number in output stream 3517
FRM-18122: ’Form Builder Debugger.
If i delete the NLS_LANG environment variable,the Form Builder can be running,but i can't keyboard input[b] chinese characters in the PL/SQL Editor.
I don't know how to solve the problem,anybody can help me?Hello Howard,
Check out the following link here you can find your desired NLS parameters.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/globalization/htdocs/nls_lang%20faq.htm
And about the NLS_LANG for developer why you want to create for developer. Its is already there in REGISTRY. Just seaching in developer registry you can find there.
how do I set more than 1 at a time.
You can set only one NLS_LANG parameter at a time.

Changing UNIX environment variables?
Is there an easy way to change the environment from inside Java-code?
I have tried using the compile version and this works fine.
Compile version:
java -DmyVar="$PATH" myClass
and then used System.setProperty("myVar", "/home/lala");
The above works fine and changes the PATH variable in UNIX, but i dont want to set these things at compiletime, is there another way?
Thank you for any hints
// addeI want to change the systems environment variable when I run my Java application, what happens when I close the program does not concern me. And I dont just want to fetch whats currently there, I want to change them and then use them in my program.
But can you somehow do this without telling the program what variables you are interested in at compile time?
Thank you for your answers
