Unrecognizable Format

I have been importing my photos by connecting my Pentax to the computer. Over the past 5 years this has worked fine. Yesterday I imported photos by connecting my new Olympus pen to the computer. It worked fine until I started searching for some old photos and discovered that all the old photos in the Library were blank with a dotted line outlining the place where a photo should be. When trying to click on the blank i got a message that it was an unrecognizable format. The result is I have only the photos from my last download (none of the older photos show, only a place-holder) What happened? How can I restore the recognizable format and view my old photos? I used iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library, but it only rebuilt the new images. Please help me find my thousands of photos.

Did you make any changes to the content of the iPhoto Library Folder using the finder? If you did that could explain why iphoto can't find your old photos. You have to make all changes working in iPhoto.
The database may be corrupt but unless you trashed them, your photos should still be in the iPhoto Library Folder.

  • Having trouble importing mpeg videos from an external hard drive to iMovie or iPhoto. Keeps saying unrecognizable format. How do I get it to work?????

I have always had a dell computer. But after the 3rd crash, we decided to throw it out and get a mac. We bought this computer a week ago. I was able to save all our family pics and videos from the dell to an external hard drive. So when I got the new Mac set up, I plugged the hard drive in and had no problem importing all our pictures. But when I tried to import our videos, I ran into some problems. We have had 3 different cameras with each having a different video format. All our videos are either avi, mpeg, or mov. All the avi videos imported successfully but the others will not. I tried importing them into imovie and iphoto and neither one will recognize the format. iphoto says unrecognizable format and imovie just completely freezes and I have to force quit.  Here is what is funny. I took the hard drive to my local store and when they hooked it up to their computer, they imported beautifully. Why won't it do the same for my brand new computer? Thanks!

  • Iphoto says Unrecognizable format when importing a photoshop JPEG RGB

Hi there, I've tried several times to import my adobe photoshop jpeg files into iphoto. My goal here is to simply burn my jpegs on to a cd and to do that I'm trying to import them into iphoto to burn them. However, my adobe photoshop jpegs won't import. Other threads mention that the files should be RGB and I ensured that they were in photoshop but it still shows that my jpegs are unrecognizable formats. I feel like I'm ALMOST there and missing one piece to be able to import them successfully. Something else to mention is that I don't NEED them to be Adobe photoshop jpegs. I just want them to be normal jpegs. I feel like is what's preventing them from importing into iphoto. Any thoughts? Thanks for any help!

I've tried your suggestion. It doesn't work. I can only access a modified Photoshop picture through finder and its in a "modified" folder by year. I've been trying all sorts of "tricks" and the only one that seems to work is to save the photoshop file to a separate folder within the "Pictures" folder, and then to import the file into iphoto.
That is correct - you must Never make any changes to the contents of the iPhoto library including saving photos to it - all photos MUST be imported into iPhoto
It's a frustrating additional step and for anyone that does multiple changes to a file in Photoshop, this can end up being a pain in the rear.
You can import the original photo to iPhoto and set PS as the editor for iPhoto - edit and save (not save as) and the edited photo will be properly returned to iPhoto

  • EOS 6D-images won't upload to MAC. Error reads file unrecognizable format.

This is my third Canon EOS camera on the same MAC OS x 10.6.8 desktop.  Have not experienced any trouble uploading images into iPhoto before.  My new camera is a 6D.  I formatted the memory card in the camera.  I even thought it was a bad card & bought a new one, only to receive the same error.  The error says the file is in an unrecognizable format.  It is only images taken on the 6D.  I tried importing directly from the camera via a usb cord & by using a card reader.  I was successfully able to upload images from my 5D Mark III.  Any ideas why I can't import the images from the 6D?
    Thanks!

The 6D is newer, so make sure your software is up to date. Check this list: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757

  • TS1315 when trying to download photos  from my digital cameras I keep getting the message that pics can't be downloaded because of an unrecognizable format. It shows that they are all jpeg files. One camera is a Canon, the other a Panasonic.

when trying to download photos  from my digital cameras I keep getting the message that pics can't be downloaded because of an "unrecognizable format". It shows that they are all jpeg files. One camera is a Canon, the other a Panasonic. I have had these cameras for a few years and have never had a problem downloading.

I am having the same problem which has happened very infrequently before. Generally it's one photo and happened when my battery died.
However today I tried to download six photos.
None would download including several others for a total of 21 that would not download.
Since I had just installed a new powered hub and added three new external 4T hard drives, I got concerned that it was the hub. Then got really worried that I'd have problems with the data I have been backing up.
However following this sequence of events, I've determined it's not the hub, but still don't know what is causing the problem.
    (1) Put a fresh battery in the camera - same results
(1.5) Used a different port in the new hub - same results
    (2) Put the card in the card slot in the back of my iMac - no problems except that one image I knew about last week. The six new images imported.
    (3) Tried again using the cable - still same error
    (4) Changed cables - my husband has the same camera - still same error
    (4) Put the card in his camera with his cable - still same error
    (5) Put the card in a card reader and used the same slot in the new hub - no problems - same one wouldn't import but message that there are no new photos to import.
    (6) Moved the offending one image to the Trash while the card was in the card reader
    (7) Put the card back into my camera and used my cable. iPhoto had no error and displayed the message there are no new photos.
    Conclusion:
    Not the camera
    Not the cable
    Not the hub
Must remove bad photo from the card
However, I have not had to do that before. I went through several imports on vacation when there was one bad image and just ignored it each time.
Any idea why this is happening now?
    Thank you

  • DVD-R unrecognizable format?

I burned about 400 pix on DVD-R on my old PBG4 to re-load onto this new uMBP. They play OK but, when I attempt to download them on here to Iphoto I get " unable to download unrecognizable format"!
How is this possible? I plan to call support if I can get this figured out here. This just doesn't make sense to me

Don't download them to iPhoto. Copy them to your desktop, then import them into iPhoto.

  • What does unreadable file and unrecognizable format mean in my iphoto 11?

What does unreadable file and unrecognizable format mean in my iphoto 11?

A number of people have reported issues with some models of Kodak cameras and iPhoto. Reformatting the card with the camera usually solves the issue. Make sure you have the photos off the card first (Image Capture - in your Applications Folder - may help with that) as reformatting will erase the card.

  • IPHOTO UNRECOGNIZABLE FORMAT?????

I am using Iphoto 9.2.3 with a Nikons3100.  All my photos have always downloaded but this last time I took pictures when I try to import it says "These files are unreadable"  But they all are coming up as JPEGs which is what they always have.  HELPPP!!!!! I really really need these pictures on my computer but I'm running out of options.

Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'

  • File format not recognized in iphoto

When I try to import photos from my camera's SD card I get an error message that says the files are in an unrecognizable format. I'm not sure what has changed, I was able to do this before without issue and I don't recall making any changes to the files or my computer. Anyone know a solution to get my photos onto my computer?

Create a minimum of 10 GB of free space (yes really) - a simple google search will confirm this (in fact many suggest a minimum of 15% of your hard drive be kept free) - one link is here - http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
The best solution may be to get an external hard drive and move the iPhoto (and possibley iTunes) library to it -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
