Unresolved runtime error - simple algorithm

Question

Ok, the specification for this code is:
1) Create a simple calculator program. The program will ask the user to first enter the two operands. Then the program will ask the user what operation they want to perform. The operation options are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. After the user indicates the operation to be perform, the program will provide the answer in an appropriate message.
2) All operands will be floating point numbers.
3) Do not permit the user to divide by 0.
4) The program should allow the user to enter either a UPPER CASE LETTER or a lower case letter to indicate the operation.
The code I have thus far created:

The program will compile and run. After entering in the two operands, the program displays the print lines in either the if or else branch, but then basically ignores the line "selection = console.readChar();" and moves straight to the switch statement. Since the user has not discerned which operator to use, the switch statement goes straight to default and returns "Invalid operator choice."
Any ideas?

Played around with it a bit more, changed a few things. Eventually it worked, too many small changes to be bothered to list them.
