Unsupported for highlight tone priority enable RAW of 1 Ds MK III

I have used Aperture for a while and been very impressed with the feature of this software. However, I notice that Aperture does not fully support RAW file of 1 Ds MkIII. There is a problem in Aperture with 1Ds MK III RAW format when the "highlight tone priority enable" is turned on in the camera. The Aperture will shift the histogram of the picture to the left side, causing the picture to look darker.
Have anyone here has this problem?

Yes, it has been discussed before. If you shoot with highlight tone priority, Aperture will show the photos as underexposed by about 1 stop. Which is, frankly, what the camera is doing. You need to do extra PP work in Aperture if you go this route.

  • 1D MkIII Highlight Tone Priority & Aperture

Let's just say that Aperture does not currently understand the Canon Eos 1D MkIII's new 'Highlight Tone Priority' setting. Any of the images with HTP set to 'on' are approximately 1-stop underexposed. When I compare them to either the in-camera JPEG or a DPP version of a CR2 file, they are too dark. You can even see Aperture updating the thumbnails as they are processed; the ones with HTP = 'off' aren't updated, and look fine.
Is there any known workaround for this, short of waiting for Apple to update the RAW engine? This is a bummer, as I really needed Aperture to weed through 700 soccer images from this weekend...
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Jeff

It sounds like it's Canon "secret sauce", which modifies what's captured even in the RAW (CR2) file between HTP-on and HTP-off (which is interesting, because so many of these types of features only affect the camera-produced or vendor-software-output JPEG file.)
From an article by Rob Galbraith, at http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-8739-8970
"A Highlight Tone Priority image is processed differently in the camera, regardless of whether the camera is set to CR2 or JPEG. Specifically, the amount of gain applied during the analog-to-digital conversion step is less. For instance, if the camera is set to ISO 200, the amount of gain applied is similar to or the same as ISO 100, which means more of the highlight detail captured by the sensor is preserved during this early in-camera processing step. This is the main reason the camera can't be set lower than ISO 200 when Highlight Tone Priority is enabled; it requires the extra highlight headroom it gets by applying a level of analog signal boost to the sensor data that is commensurate with a lower ISO setting.
After that, it's all secret sauce: Canon isn't publicly describing what is done to the image once it's in digital form, but it obviously involves a modified tone curve that's meant to give Highlight Tone Priority ON photos the same overall tonal look as Highlight Tone Priority OFF ones, but with more detail and smoother gradation in the highlights."
    Interesting.

  • LR/ACR and Canon Highlight Tone Priority

    Hey All,
I recently acquired a Canon 1D Mk III which, among other things, offers the Highlight Tone Priority function.
I've read different things about how this "works" and how it may affect Canon RAW files. Since I shoot only RAW, it's meaningful to me to understand what's going on with this function and if I as a RAW shooter gain a real benefit from its use.
From what I've read, I gather that with HTP enabled, and the ISO set to, say, 200 (the lowest ISO for HTP use) the camera actually reads the analog data for ISO 100 from the A/D Converter/amplifier, then applies a curve in digital processing to boost the exposure for the dark and midtones, while curving down the boost into the highlights. I don't have an expert analysis of this but more opinions of those who've run tests and analyzed the results.
One of these testers believes that for RAW, a flag is set in Exif that directs RAW converters to apply this flag -- in other words the actual RAW data is in this example the (underexposed) ISO 100 data and the converter, in our case Lightroom, knows to apply some kind of curve on initially rendering the data. In other words, in this opinion, the RAW data is the unchanged ISO 100, a stop underexposed relative to the desired ISO 200.
So, I'm hoping that those "in the know" in the Adobe world can give me a definitive answer so that I and other Canon RAW shooters can make an educated decision as to whether we want to use this tool or not!
I'd really like to hear from someone on the Adobe team about this, or one of you all who works with the team!
    Thanks,
    Tony

I don't mean to cause a problem with this statement...but here it goes any way:
For all those who have a cam with HTP, test this for yourself. You will see a noticeable difference between shooting in RAW with HTP on and off. (YMMV)
If we can see the difference, and it is a good one (in our favor of better image quality) than why do we need info from Adobe about this? We should just be happy it Does work and continue to confidently take our photos.
I have never used DPP to see if there is a difference between RAW w/HTP and the same image from LR.
    edit:
I suspect the reason that it does work with LR is that HTP possibly works in the image pipeline in the camera. Meaning it does it's magic before it writes the raw file. So any luminance/tone-curve/iso trickery is done before the actual raw phase. The raw data has already been shifted (similar to RAW shot at ISO 3200, which we already know is 1600 underexposed 1 stop than pushed in camera before writing the file)

  • Red highlights not working Camera Raw 8.8

I'm on a imac & just downloaded Camera Raw 8.8.  The red highlights do not show up on blown/over exposed areas.  I have clicked it on & off.  Someone mentioned holding down the alt button while clicking exposure or highlights slider & that worked initially.  But now that doesn't work either.  How do I fix this?

Thanks Benjamin!  I just tried that & the highlights are showing up, but not like they did the older version I had.  I've opened the same picture in both versions.  In 8.8, it has to be drastically overexposed for highlights to show, but there is a ton of area where they don't show.  In the 5.0 version, it showed immediately upon opening the picture.  Is this the way 8.8 is supposed to be or is there something wrong with mine?

  • Want to use Reader Extensions for highlighting and adding comments

    Hi,
The basic use for which we plan to use Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions is for highlighting and adding comments.
In a J2EE application, we create PDF document at runtime using (PDFBox). The purpose to use Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions is when the end user sees the PDF created he/she should be able to add highlights and add comments to the PDF document and save it back to server.
The question is what all I need to do. Just install Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions on the server. What should be done specifically when the PDF is created using PDFBox? Add any information to the PDF so that when PDF is viewed by the user he/she can add comments or highlight.
Can I get sample application and I also need Developer Guide. I think Developer guide comes with the setup? Did not find any place where I can down load a demo setup of Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions.
Can you please guide me in the right direction? I am collecting more information as I search the internet and go through the forum, but it will be very helpful if someone can give correct information.
    Thank You.
    Regards,
    Jay Chandran.

    Hi,
I was reading Adobe Reader SDK document (Acrobat_SDK_overview.pdf), in that it is mentioned under
    About rights-enabled documents:
You cannot programmatically rights-enable a PDF file.
Well I am confused, because my requirement is like this:
    1. PDF is created using (PDFBox) as part in a J2EE application.
    2. After the PDF has been created, from the J2EE application, the PDF will be send to LiveCycle Extensions to right enable it. (There is no user interface, and it is planned to be done programatically using Adobe libraries. The PDF will be send to LiveCycle Server and Right Enabled PDF will be returned.)
So if there is no way to "programmatically rights-enable a PDF file", how can it be done without having an web interface?
Just to confirm, PDF can be prgramatically right-enabled using LiveCycle libraries right? I have to right enable PDF files prgramatically and not using LiveCycle web interface.
    Thank You.
    Regards,
    Jay Chandran.

  • How to Install Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera

I need someone to walk me through how to install a Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera.
I haven't used photoshop in ages and I got a new camera. I have been on the phone with Adobe (no help) and spent a couple of hours online trying to figure this out. I'm confused, frustrated and about to throw my computer out the window.
Also, I placed this in the "Photoshop for Beginners" since Photoshop CS5 doesn't appear anymore. I know CS5 is outdated but I spent hundreds of dollars on this program and you would think adobe would still honor its product.
    Any guidance is much appreciated.
    AJ

Odds are cs5 is too old. If you do a search on my the main Adobe website there is a list of compatible cameras for the last known update to camera raw for cs5.
Each version of Photoshop only gets so many updates for camera raw then it is necessary to upgrade Photoshop to get the next update for camera raw.
So you currently have 4 choices.
    1 upgrade Photoshop
2 get Lightroom - latest version
3 get Photoshop elements -latest version
4 get dng converter - this will download the latest version an is the only option that is free.
The dng converter can be found by searching Adobe website.

  • How to create a "Custom Color" for highlighting? (Acrobat XI)

    March 10, 2014
How to create a "Custom Color" for highlighting? (Acrobat XI)
The numbers in the RGB and other fields change as various numbers are changed.
I wanted to create a pale orange:
    Hue               13      Red      255
    Saturation   240      Green  177
    Luminosity    86       Blue     140
I'd selected one of the orange squares in the color grid, to display the general orange area of the slider.
I moved the slider to select a pale orange, which generated the above numbers.   Since this wasn't directly available to save to a Custom Color, I tried to  edit the numbers.  Unfortunately, the other numbers changed, making it impossible to actually create a color.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Note:  I used Techsmith's Snagit to show screen shots in a Word document.
When I attempted to browse and upload the file, the error message said "[The content type of this image is not allowed.]"
    OK...what images *are* allowed?

    Hi Don,
I saw Gilad answered your question in another forum post.
Do you have everything you need at this point?
Let me know if you need further assistance.

  • Option missing for the iPod to enable or disable the album artwork.

I have a 5th Gen iPod and iTunes 10.5.1. I did a restored on the iPod to try and solve a locking up/freezing problem.
After the restire none of my album artwork got included in the restore. Additionally I don't have the option for the iPod to enable or disable the album artwork.
I plug in the iPod and select that iPod then select Music. No matter what options I choose (Sync all of Library, Sync Playlists, etc.) I don't have the option to enable album artwork.
Has anyone else seen this issue?
I also have a second 5th gen (but bigger) iPod and older Nano, iPhone and iPad and this option does not show up for any of these devices however, all of those show the artwork.
What happened to the option to enable or disable artwork and how do I get my artwork back on my iPod?

That option was removed as of iTunes version 9.  Somebody else recently had this issue with a similar model iPod and came to discover that the HD was simply going bad.

  • How to create production order for multiple items having common raw materia

    Dear all,
We are running a sheet metal fabrication company at Vadodara Gujrat.
Please guide us how to create single production order for multiple items using single raw material??
For example, We want to produce baby shirt(item code AAA001), shirt with full sleeve(item code AAA002), shirt with half sleeve(item code AAA003),shirt slim fit (item code AAA004),shirt loose fit(item code AAA005) from single raw material say(item code XXX001).
Right now we have to create 5 production order to produce above 5 items of single sales order  in SAP B1 though it is made from single raw material which is foolishness and time consuming too. (Please also note that to produce any finfish good item, raw material required for that item may vary every time in our process.)
Kindly guide us how to solve the problem.
    Thanks.

    Hi Rupesh Gorashiya,
This is possible through MRP for that you have to put Sales Order first and Run MRP Wizard
MRP Wizard Put Multi Production Order as per Item Taking in Sales Order just click it on and execute.

Why cant i use a bought call-tone bought through I-tones for calling tones for just one of my contacts?

What makes you believe that you can't? To set a custom ringtone (or SMS tone) for a contact, go to that contact entry, tap the Edit button in the upper right. You can then edit both ringtones and SMS tones for that contact.

  • Hello, what is the best way for me to convert RW2 raw format for use in Photoshop CC

Hello, what is the best way for me to convert RW2 raw format for use in Photoshop CC. I would appreciate any help with this.

Thanks for the quick help. I do have to leave for work. When I try to
download the images from the camera they seem to only be in jpeg (I don't
see any rw2 or raw files to download). If I select the jpeg file it seems
to only download a jpeg file. I do understand that I do have the option to
open the jpeg in RAW. In doing this, is all the extra information included
in the RAW file there or is it lost coming from the camera
Once again thank you for trying to make me understand how this works.
    Have a great day.

  • Tool for highlighting a pattern in terminal

I'm looknig for a tool which can be used in terminal for highlighting patterns. For example
    $ cat fruits
    banana
    apple
    orange
    $ cat fruits | hilight_magic_tool apple
    banana
    apple # <-- highlightetd
    orange
    $ cat fruits | hilight_magic_tool strawberry
    banana
    apple
    orange
Its quite similiar to grep --color=auto but grep shows only output when the pattern occurs, when the pattern doesn't occur it acts like simple cat.
Anybody knows the real name of the hilight_magic_tool?

    Make a sed script:
    #!/bin/dash
    sed -e 's/'"$1"'/^[[31m&^[[m/g'
The ^[[ is made by CTRL+v, ESC, [
EDIT: added double quotes around $1 to make more possible.

  • User set cliping points for Highlight and Shadow

OK I know Lightroom 3 is currently available as a Beta version and is not complete and there may be more features to come.
    But
Wouldn't it be nice in the develop module to set the point at which you get clipping warnings for highlight and shadow.
I ask this as a lot of my work goes straight out for repro, and it would be usefull to be able to set the highlight  to say 90-95% and the shadow to about 15-20%.
OK I know I can run  a tool over the image and see what the percentage is, but it would be a lot esier if I could set my own limits and just watch for the red and blue "blobs"
    Just a sugestion

I too find the FTP server implementation to be sorely lacking in OS X Server. There is no option to share out only the designated FTP root folder without showing the other share points. It seems impossible to lock down subdirectories to specific users with letting them see the contents of the root directory. Maddening!
I'm looking at other FTP server options. Rumpus comes highly recommended, but I also just found CrushFTP which also looks intriguing, especially its option to integrate with LDAP - something that Rumpus does not do. CrushFTP is also significantly less expensive.

  • Workflow for Post Processing Magic Lantern RAW Video?

    Dear Adobe Community,
I am interested in learning what steps/workflow fellow DSLR, Magic Lantern users take to Edit, Color Grade and add FX to their RAW video?  Here is my untested thought process so far:
Adjust the Exposure, White Balance, Lens Distortion, Etc of DNGs in Adobe Camera Raw.
Import DNG image sequence into Premiere Pro for Editing
Use Dynamic Link to Color Grade in Speed Grade
Use Dynamic Link to add effects in After Effects
    Render out in Premiere Pro
One of the concerns I have is that I've read on the Magic Lantern Forums that Premiere Pro will reduce 14 Bit DNG to 8 Bit.  Is this something you've encountered?  Is there a workaround?
I am fairly new to all of this and would greatly appreciate any feedback to point me in the right direction for Post Processing Magic Lantern Raw Video files.  I have a subscription to Lynda.com as well if you have any suggestions for courses to look at.
    Thank-you for your time.

Nothing Adobe makes can read MLV or RAW video files, so you have to use something else to convert them into CinemaDNG (a folder of images) or a high bit depth movie file (ProRes etc.) - there are many tools listed in the ML forum which can do that.
Premiere Pro can import cDNG footage but it struggles to play back in real time, and will not allow you to grade it using Camera Raw. To do that you have to use After Effects. The workflow is supposed to be "ingest in Prelude, edit in Premiere Pro, color in SpeedGrade", but quite frankly the learning curve for SG is massive. Adobe's attitude to CinemaDNG is strange; although the standard is open, support is only coded for very specific models of camera and the CC suite assumes a Hollywood workflow where professional colorists (who spend years learning how to use the software) operate offline from the rest of the edit, usually after all the cuts are made. It's not set up for a typical lone DSLR filmmaker, which is quite frankly why a lot of ML users prefer another well-known way to resolve the problem.
The 'fast and dirty' approach to getting a cinematic grade in Premiere would be to apply LUT files to the footage using the Lumetri effect (basically running SpeedGrade presets), or you can hand-grade it using the inbuilt Color Corrector tools - but that doesn't cover the other important stuff that ACR can do, such as lens correction, alignment, noise reduction, camera calibration profiles, etc. - for that, you should import the cDNG footage into After Effects (which does support ACR), correct and calibrate the frames, then export back to something high quality that Premiere can work with (such as DNxHD or ProRes 444). You won't notice any visual loss in quality, and Premiere then will play the timeline without struggling, but it takes a loooong time to chew through every clip.
As to if Adobe applications will ever support MLV files natively - well, since Adobe relies on close partnerships with camera manufacturers including Canon, you can guess what would happen if Adobe ever endorsed it. The only scenario I can imagine is if MLV is adopted in-camera by a major DC manufacturer (Alexa, etc) so vendors can support it without slapping Canon in the face. Flying pigs come to mind.
