Unusable system (graphical glitches and more)

Sorry for the quite unspecific title, but I'm not really sure how to describe this problem...
So, I came back from a threeweek long vacation yesterday and did a "pacman -Syu". Everything went smooth and there was nothing on the Arch news or the forum that seemed serious to me, so I thought everything was good.
After booting today, I experience pretty bad graphical glitches which make the system unusable. urxvtc (and lxterminal) don't even start anymore, one of my conkys hogs a core at 100% and chromium and gvim look like this:

Sakura, xterm, dwb, firefox and thunderbird seem to work fine, as far as I can tell. Haven't really tested things in deep, but there's nothing obvious. Logs (dmesg or journalctl) also look plain to me, but I can post them anyway if necessary.
pacman.log is here. As you can see, I tried downgrading some packages that seemed relevant to me, but no success so far.

  • Crashes, graphics glitches, and more crashes when editing video clips

Can't for the life of me figure out why PE keeps crashing on me, so I'm here for help.
My system consists of a i7-970 hexacore, 6GB ram, 1x 500GB os drive, 3x500gb raid 0 drives (this is where my video clips are stored), 2x GeForce GTX460 video cards.
OS is Windows 7 Profressional 64 bit.
The video files I work with are generally in the 50-200GB size.
A little background - the videos that I am working with are recordings from Battlefield Bad Company 2 that I have recorded with some capture software called Dxtory.
I record at 1920x1080 at 60 FPS to avi files.  The avi files are using the "xtor" codec (Dxtory's own codec)
    [ISFT]    DxtoryCore ver2.0.0.101
[ISRC]    Video:YUV420 Audio:Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Audio is PCM 192000Hz recorded in stereo.
Let me start by saying I have not had trouble with this before until I started recording the videos at 60 FPS.  30 FPS worked ok (some crashes here and there, but they were bearable), but the frequent crashes started happening when I started working with the 60 FPS videos, done mainly so I could play around with slowing the clips down, etc.
Sometimes I can open and edit clips just fine.
Recently, a project that I'm working on is crashing when I try putting two different clips from different files together on the time line.  I managed to get it to work once, and saved the project after that.  Then, PE crashed randomly and when trying to reopen the project, it just crashes and won't let me get any further.
I should mention the graphics glitches as well - occasionally (especially when previewing video clips before adding them to the timeline) after I close the preview window, the graphics in PE will glitch out, causing random lines to appear in certain areas, graphics to stack on top of eachother and freeze up, and sometimes I can click on the "play" button in the main project window and hear everything start playing, but the graphics are completely screwed up to the point where I can't view the video or hit the pause button.
All of my computer hardware is fine, all drivers, and PE, are up to date.
Can someone please help me figure out what is going on?  I'll be happy to provide any more information that might help out.

The most likely issue is the codec that your program is using the create your video. It's apparently not compatible with Premiere Elements.
This often happens also when people try to record their on-screen video with FRAPS.
You'll see lots of discussions on this issue in the Premiere Pro forum. However, it's even more pronounced in Premiere Elements, which is designed to work almost exclusively with camcorder video.
Some video programs are a little more versatile with this type of video. Some people have found Corell's Video Studio better at handling these non-traditonal formats.
But I did a Google search on Dxtory editing and couldn't find any information on it.
Sorry I can't offer a solution. But I can pretty much assure you that Premiere Elements isn't it. sorry.

  • Graphic glitch and freezing.

I had a graphic problem with my iMac 3 weeks ago, had to take it to an Apple repairer 3 hours away, there just isn't anyone closer, and have had it back for about 6 hours now. I got the Snow Leopard upgrade while it was away and have been looking forward to getting into it all. As soon as I got my iMac home I fired it up and straight away noticed a graphic glitch or something odd on my 2nd monitor, kinda looked like aliens from space invaders... This problem went away if I changed that monitors resolution or if I rotated the display, so I thought it might be a driver problem which should hopefully be fixed by upgrading to SL.
I attempted this upgrade, it seemed to go fine but when I finally got into SL I noticed that once again there were some space invader glitches, but instead of being huge and all the way across the 2nd monitor they were in 2 separate blocks 1 in the top left and one just slightly to the right from center at the very top, they were flashing green from time to time (just like before) but that was about all. After a few seconds all the icons on my desktop and also the dock icons screwed up, display as black and white lines, or weird colored blocks, or super pixelated and just pretty screwy.
I formatted from fresh doing Leopard (without updating fully to 10.5.8) then installing SL, same problem, I then tried installing just SL which worked as usual but still had the graphic glitches when hovering over or interacting this time, also there were some problems with the glitches showing over windows (I'll put a link to a screenshot of them at the end). I'm currently updating a fresh install of Leopard to 10.5.8 to then update to SL to see if that works.
I had a thought that it might be hardware, the logic board and graphics card were both replaced during the repair time, they said they tested it but on the repair form I got it just says 'restarted a few times with no problems' so I'm not sure if they even tested it very much.
It took almost 3 weeks to get my mac back today, and these problems are quite annoying, if I have to lose it for another 3 weeks because of this lack of testing I'm gonna be rather annoyed as I'm losing work because of it.
Anyone got ideas of what it might be? or just anyone else had this problem with SL or just Leopard? Any information would be great.
Screenshot of glitch while doing a google search:
    http://www.xager.net/i/glitch.jpg

My old first gen macbook pro had a similar problem (under Tiger and Leopard), it was fixed. My current unibody macbook pro is doing this as well, I've only noticed it now under Snow Leopard.
I doubt it's a software problem, I've had similar issues in PCs when their video cards were running too hot. My current mbp gets these glitches when the system is under more load and so I'm sure its heat related. One time the heat and glitches got so bad the system just locked up.
I hope you can get your system repaired. I am going to now go ahead and try my luck with apple support as well.

  • Freezing Macbook Pro. Graphical glitches and occasional 3 tones on start up. Hardware test shows no errors. Is it RAM or a graphics card on the way out, or software?

Recently my MacBook Pro has been freezing and showing bad graphical glitches. Multiple restarts eventually fix it and a couple of times the three tones break, three tones break warning has occurred on start up. From what I can find this is usually a RAM error but after doing a hardware check I get the response all is OK. This still happens after the check and I am unsure what the problem could be. Can anyone help? Could it be a memory issue, a hard drive issue, Graphics card issue (drivers are up to date) or is something up with the software. I also have a Bootcamp partition running Windows 7 too and this is a problem that presents itself there too.

    Most likely to be RAM:
    Beeps on startup:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images.
5 beeps = processor is not usable

I would suggest you take it to an Apple Store for a free diagnostic.

  • 1st gen Mac Pro graphics glitches and unresponsive

I'm not sure if this is related to
    a) Snow Leopard
    b) Safari 5
    c) something else
but after recent updates I get graphics glitches, such as in Safari, lines across the browser window, not on particular content, it might be pure HTML (the old kind) and can be flash, or multimedia...
When using Final Cut (6) I get some weird graphics related errors from time to time, and after hours of editing suddenly my computer stops, becomes "frozen" (I have the clock in the menu bar set to show seconds and they stop) I have to do a hard-reboot to get anything back.
And the thing that happened now, which makes me post this thread is I was doing some web development, while watching some iTunes U movies, suddenly I had green graphical artifacts over the screen(s) and the computer froze.
Is anyone else out there experiencing this, perhaps found the source of the problem ?
My console reports 2 things that doesn't seem too "serious" TimeMachine finished doing a backup successfully and mDNSresponder got a "Bad DDNS browsing domain: (unknown)" just before the latest break down.

Sorry you're having this issue. It is a common issue and I have it as well. I ended up replacing my card which fixed the problem but, after 6 months, the problem is back.
There is something nasty with the Mac Pro's and graphic cards it seems. My first card was a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT and now I'm having trouble with the ATI Radeon HD 2600.
I'm trying to get to the bottom of the problem... no luck so far... I'm not interested in replacing the card if it's going to happen again 6 months down the road and I'm not interested in buying a new computer either.
    Any luck with your problem?

  • Terrible Mac Pro graphics glitches and garbling - please help!

Hi all, I have a terrible problem with my early 2008 (8 core) mac pro. Everytime I am editing with final cut, after around 5 minutes, the contents of the screen will start to act very strangely and before I know it, the whole screen is garbled with multicolored shapes and lines (see screenshots below). The system will then completely crash and I will have to hold the power button to shut down. Yesterday, I took it to my local apple store and they put it down to a broken graphics card and fitted a replacement, today its happening again!
Please take a look at the screen shots posted and let me know if any of you have had this problem or if you can help to shed some light on this issue for me.
I'm running an ATI Radeon HD 2600 / snow leopard.

    thanks for reading.

Hi, and welcome to the forums! I actually had the same problem though I don't use pro apps. But how I resolved mine was to de-activate that german based overclocking program called ZDnet overclock utility. For you it maybe a different problem. But if I were you, I'd get rid of the 2600 as its a slow card and lacks OPENCL.
In general, I would just pick up a GT120 or 4870 and get rid of the 2600 as its an older card. It seems the 2600 works better under Leopard than in Snow Leopard.

  • Macbook Pro ''15 Retina Graphic glitches and freeze

Hey, I hope some of you may help me. Sometimes when I open my Macbook and it's awaking from sleep it freeze and I have a distorted screen with wired colours, I need to reboot it then, but after rebooting all is fine :/ Is that a software bug or related to my Logicboard ? I just got it back after a warranty case where something on my old Logicboard died after 8 weeks after purchase. I bought it this June. I have that Nvidia graphics in there. Here is a pic I made: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42689244/IMAG0090.jpg

What is an SMC reset? The gfxcardstatus worked. Partially. I now know something is either wrong with the nvidia graphic card or its software(the hd 4000 one is better from a performance test by individually testing both cards).
How does the apple exchange work? Just walk in with the Mac and they resolve/replace the Mac or what? Any ideas?

  • Equium A60: graphic problems and more

ive had so many probs with tis equium a60. it was overheating, stand by wasnt working and now the graffics were messing up! I rung this place pcworld recommended n they said try formatting it (great). so anyway i restored it to the factory settings so it was exactly how it was when i first got it. stand by is now working properly :) but it is still overheating (i mean it really does get hot) and the graffics still are messing up.
what happens is the screen freezes for a few seconds and then it goes to the worst display settings possible, so everything is massive and the colours are all wrong. and a pop up says windows as encountered an error please reboot.
This just happens at random times, i dont understand why ive formatted. I dunno if the graffics card itself is knackered. any help or ideas much appreciated. cheers

    Hi Dave,
I think it must be assumed that your problems stem from the over-heating. It is very common for dust and debris to build up and block the passage of air through the CPU Heat Sink. I would suggest trying to remove any such accumulation either by blowing through the heatsink (towards the cooling fans), or by sucking out any debris with a domestic vacuum cleaner. If all else fails then you can remove the heatsink and clean the dust out before replaceing it. Beware that this may invalidate your warranty.
Normally a thermal trip will shut off the power if it detects the CPU getting too hot, but this does not mean that some other problems may not arise.
If you still have problems with you display after you have dealt with the over-heating issue then please post again.

  • Graphical glitches with more than one user logged in

    Some of the symptoms:
    - Finder windows that refuse to scroll (unless the cursor is hovered over the dock, then the position will jump)
    - Images that show blanks in Quick Look.  Sometimes reactivating Quick Look will cause the image to be displayed.
    - Interface elements freezing unless the cursor is moved over the dock.
In every case, logging out one user fixes the issues for the other user.  This is on a MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt.

It sounds like you have scheduled it to shut down instead of sleep. Ensure you have selected Sleep and not Shut Down.

  • BPC10 Graphic Glitch/Bug on Excel

    Hi all,
sometimes it happens to me this kind of strange (graphic?) bug on the Excel part of BPC:
when I use the EPM - Member Selector (or the EPM Context filter), as you can see in the above image in the red squadre, there is a graphic glitch and I can't define the filter. I have to close and reopen the Excel in order to solve this issue.
This happen, as I said before, randomly (of course this mean I don't know the cause of the problem) but in a specific report it always happens after executing a macro. So, are there any specific VBA instructions that I should be aware of that can cause this kind of problems?
    Thanks,

late 2011 MBP.  Installed Yosemete a month ago.  Start to get wifi and graphic problems a few days ago! then frozen and crashed from time to time.  Now it can only start into progress bar screen and keeps on power cycling itself.  Very disappointed and frustrated.  I have read many threads of graphic glitch and hardware failure with Yosemete.  I am here to find a fix.  Any idea?  Cannot imagine Apple keeps silent on this and sheds off their responsibility.

  • Intel Graphics - Lags and glitches since linux 3.6?

    Hi there,
since the upgrade which included the linux-3.6 package (among others, unfourtunately I have no idea which packages were upgraded exactly, only downgrading the kernel was no fix), I experience graphical glitches when I use my laptop. There's a Ivy Bridge graphics chip in it and I use the intel driver together with SNA. When I boot up the computer it says

and I can find this in my journal from time to time

The i915_error_state file is very big, so I had to xz and upload it: http://www30.zippyshare.com/v/33532322/file.html
Additionally, everything just feels slow somehow, for example KDE's Expose effect gives me approximately 5-6fps while it was perfectly smooth before.
Here is an example of how the graphical glitches look like: http://www.abload.de/img/intelbug1yostj.png
I hope there's someone here who can help me Thank you very much in advance!

I experienced the same behaviour - GPU hung. However, I have only encountered it playing Team Fortress 2 using wine and bumblebee. Strange, because the game runs on nvidia card. I had to kill hl2.exe, and restart the game.
Today, I did exactly what you said, and so far, after 2 hours of gameplay just one crash, but most propably unrelated to the intel GPU. Has anyone opened of found a bug report related to that problem? Downgrading is only a short-term solution.
About performance regressions, I haven't experienced any using the system normally (but cairo-compmgr isn't heavy for a gpu). On the other hand, Team Fortress 2 has bigger fps drops than before, but that might be my subjective feeling.

I don't think that a software update from Apple will solve the issues that you are having. You have a rogue installation. After you posted I have just done the following:
Disk Utility can verify  my partitioned Volume (including my boot disk) AND REPAIR the non-boot disks on the same Volume without a glitch. It repairs the non-boot disks containing data smoothly.
I have used Mail to send some mails from some Yahoo and Hotmail accounts to my Thunderbird client containing GMail accounts - absolutely normal.
I have iLife '09 but my iMovie '09 and iPhoto '09 open in a jiffy and I see no issues here. I have 6GB RAM (Maximum) on an early 2008 Macbook Pro with a 750GB hard drive partitioned with 120GB reserved for the Boot Drive.
I am sorry that I cannot help further but I am sure there must be a way to reinstall the software without having to revert to restoring your ML backup. I have two clones and if you have such I would attempt to do that through that rather than through Time Machine - that is of course if you have a cloned drive.
    Good luck!

  • Graphical Glitches on Macbook Pro, Reinstalled and still there...

Over the past few months, I have been getting some graphical glitches on my Macbook Pro. Recently, They've been occuring more frequently. I've reinstalled Leopard and they are still occuring.
Since I've gotten this Macbook Pro, It's had the Superdrive replaced, Battery replaced, Magsafe connector replaced, charger replaced, logic board replaced, keyboard replaced, top bezel/trackpad replaced, and the airport card replaced, all to fix various issue's. I've tried to get apple to replace it since it's obviously a lemon but to no avail, even though I purchased AppleCare. This is my second Macbook Pro. Anyways, I've taken screenshots of the problems that randomly occur.

You really need to call Apple Customer Relations (800) 767-2775 instead of AppleCare. Just tell them what you stated in your post.
Be firm but polite when requesting a replacement.
