Unwanted side head formatting in text frames

In my document, I use many text frames within anchored frames.  Without my knowledge of having done anything, all of my text frames now have side heads within them.  So all of the text that I entered has disappeared.  See example below.
I can see it if I stretch the text frame large enough.  See below:
Now, when I create new text frames with text within them, they look fine.  They maintain their proper formatting.  But all of the ones created before a few days ago look like above.
In addition, the footer changed formatting w/o my doing anything.  The left side of the footer moved in to the left to the column margin, as if there was supposed to be a side head in the formatting of the footer text box.  I imported page formatting from another document and this problem corrected itself.
Thank you.

This has happened,
heck still happens to me.
(more than once)
even today, to ONE chapter of a 14+chapter document..
I too did not CHANGE any of my settings, it just decided it wanted my text boxes to have side headers.
(which is why I found your question while trying to find an answer.)
The fastest way I have found SO FAR to fix it, is to
Select each text box,
Right Click
Object Properties
The Text Frame Properties box shows up, and it has a check box in the Flow -Room for Side Heads pane.
Now, I have no idea why, but my FM11 decided that it wanted 1.5" with .25gap on my text boxes.
I had to un-check, and Apply.
but it was easier than copying the information and putting it in a new text box, (which oddly enough, also works...  )

  • When i re-open a document format of text frames is changed

    I save my document with some frames with text. I close it. When I open it again the text is no longer visible, the format of the frame is changed. If i save it again, it may be stable...... incredible.

    It sounds like you are alternately opening it in different versions of Pages.
    If you 'upgraded' to Pages 5 from Pages '09 they are both on your Mac.
    It sounds like you created the document in Pages '09 and then next time opened it in Pages 5 which does a poor job of translating the older format. Then when you saved it in Pages 5 it of course no longer changed the next time you opened it in Pages 5.
    In the process of 'upgrading' Pages 5 Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 many of wwhich are causing these problems.

    Pages '09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
    Archive/trash Pages 5 and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Header affixed to a text frame, repeared with autofill, Indesign CS3

    Hi,
    Can I affix a text-header to a text frame such that when I use autofill, the text frame will be repeated into the auto-added-pages with the header attached on its top, centered?
    Can I do it on the Master Page?
    Best regards,
    Mickey

    Hi Peter,
    See my other message.
    Basically I have 3 text sections on my page. On every page.
    And I want the middle and bottom to have a header.
    If I affix the headers on the master page they will indeed appear on every page AT THE SAME PLACE.
    Then, assuming I was successfull in filling all 3 sections with text, I need to play with the frame size on every page so that the proper texts between the 3 sections are properly content-alligned.
    (imagine that the top frames contain and article. The middle frames contains commentary on the article. The bottom frames contain word dictionary. And I do not want to use footnotes. So I have to align the page-section-contents by adjusting each frame size.)
    When I do so, I wish the headers to move with the frames and remain in the same relative position to the frame.
    I tried Anchored Objects affixed to the frame, but when the Anchored Object is a text frame...the silly thing attaches it to the OutPort of the frame. And it is "automatically threaded". Which is not what i want.
    Maybe if the Anchored Object would be a Graphic Object it could work.
    I was hoping there is a more direct way.

  • Chapter Title Text Frame Questions

    I have a book with some side heads, and I made a master page with a simple grey background.  It works great when the chapter title is short:
    (the grid pattern is a screen capture artifact--on my screen is a solid grey)
    I put an empty paragraph in there to scroll down the next body paragraph, and while it's not an elegant solution, it does work.
    However, some chapter titles are longer and push things down:
    And that pushes down the body text.  So, I tried adding a chapter title text frame to the master page:
    This works great visually, and also gives the chapter title more room since the upper text frame doesn't have side heads:
    However, now the book files listing seems not to be recognizing the chapter title, and instead is just picking up body text from the document:
    The first text frame has "autoconnect" turned off, and I named that "A" and the main body text frame "B".
    Any suggestions as to how to get the book files listing to recognize the chapter title?
    Thanks!
    John
    www.controlgeek.net

    John,
    I have not tried this, but you could try creating a master page for the first page in the chapter. Put two frames on the master page BOTH with the flow set to A. Position the first frame where you want the title to be and position the second frame where you want the text to begin. Set the paragraph tag for the title to have no space following. Set the paragraph tag for the FIRST paragraph of the text to Keep X rows together. With X set large enough, FrameMaker would not have room to put the first paragraph in the upper frame, so it will push it to the next frame. If this works, you can even go back to your original side head format for the title. You just have to make sure the top frame is large enough to hold all titles, so that a title does not leak to the second frame.

  • Text Frame Options. Room for Side Heads added without warning

    Hi -
    I just got asked this and have no clue how to help. Anyone know what this is?
    Every now and then, my Frame file will –apparently on its own – reset most of its text frames into having room for side heads.  Makes for lots of bad labels on graphics – everything’s suddenly offset and scrolling off the bottom.
    This will happen suddenly.  It will usually be only one or two chapters in a book, but if I ignore it has been known spread like the black death throughout the book.
    The only solution I’ve found so far has been to revert to a backup or touch each text frame individually.  Setting properties for two at a time messes up location on the page.

    HI -
    Here's what I heard back.
    I believe it’s for everything except main text flow, including headers&footers on master pages, and special elements on unused master pages.
    It appears to be spontaneous, but I can’t guarantee that.
    I don’t use MIFs, and I’m pretty sure no one else does.
    Yes to formatting imports , because we frequently change variables in one chapter and copy them back to the rest (esp date doc was last edited – not same as print date per our regulatory agency.)   Likewise conditional text.  We know not to copy from a file into itself in a book, although it has happened and we do exchange manuals between revisions at times.

  • Frame 9 solution for table column + side head does not work in Frame 10 and 11

    In Frame 9 structured (DITA) we could force Frame to record the actual widths of table columns in the DITA XML.  Frame 9 would respect the widths when opening the file.  This was particularly useful for forcing tables to be wide -- to go across the column and the side head -- and for the columns to never resize.
    In Frame 9 this was done by commenting out the line
    "writer use proportional widths;"
    like this
    "/* writer use proportional widths; */"
    in the topic.rules.text" file located in
    "...\FrameMaker9\Structure\xml\DITA\app\DITA-Topic-FM"
    This no longer works in Frame10 and Frame 11.  Even though the same line is commented out in all the "NAME.rules.txt" files in all the subdirectories of
        "...\AdobeFrameMaker11\Structure\xml\DITA_1.2\app"
    and
        "...\AdobeFrameMaker11\Structure\xml\DITA\app"
    and
        "...\AdobeFrameMaker10\Structure\xml\DITA_1.2\app"
    and
        "...\AdobeFrameMaker10\Structure\xml\DITA\app"  .
    Commenting out the line does force Frame 10 and 11 to record  the absolute column width (2.357" etc.) in the DITA XML.
    However, on Open,  Frame 10 and 11 force the table to fit in the column, not the column and sidehead. That is they behave as though they were still using proportional column widths.  It seems the original values (as inserted by Frame 10 and 11 before closing!) are recalculated on Open, thereby mimicking the default proportional width behavior.
    For example, this on Save then Close from Frame 10 or 11
    <table frame = "topbot" colsep = "0" rowsep = "1">
    <tgroup cols = "4" colsep = "0" rowsep = "1" outputclass = "FormatB">
    <colspec colnum = "1" colname = "1" colwidth = "1.796in" colsep = "0"/>
    <colspec colnum = "2" colname = "2" colwidth = "1.852in" colsep = "0"/>
    <colspec colnum = "3" colname = "3" colwidth = "1.179in" colsep = "0"/>
    <colspec colnum = "4" colname = "4" colwidth = "2.152in" colsep = "0"/>
    goes to this on Open then Save:
    <table frame = "topbot" colsep = "0" rowsep = "1">
    <tgroup cols = "4" colsep = "0" rowsep = "1" outputclass = "FormatB">
    <colspec colnum = "1" colname = "1" colwidth = "1.351in" colsep = "0"/>
    <colspec colnum = "2" colname = "2" colwidth = "1.393in" colsep = "0"/>
    <colspec colnum = "3" colname = "3" colwidth = "0.887in" colsep = "0"/>
    <colspec colnum = "4" colname = "4" colwidth = "1.618in" colsep = "0"/>
    Any help at all would be appreciated!
    We have 8,000 to 10,000 pages to PDF in the next few days and about 33% of those pages are messed up tables!

    Hi...
    Unfortunately, I don't have any insight into the default DITA table handling in FM10 or FM11 .. so can't give you the answer you're looking for. Since both FM10 and FM11 offer ExtendScript, you could write a script (or have one written) that processes all of your files to reset the table widths. Or, perhaps the best short term solution may be to reinstall FM9 to get the job done, then spend more time later to figure out a better solution.
    One alternative would be for you to use DITA-FMx, which supports the table/@pgwide attribute for controlling which tables span the page and which don't. Since your tables probably don't make use of this attribute, it won't help in the near term, but might make sense going forward.

  • How to make a text variable (running header - character) resize a text frame?

    I have successfully been able to get a metadata text variable to auto-resize a text frame, but when I change the text variable to a running header-character/paragraph variable, the text frame does not resize - in fact it gets smaller and squashes the text.
    Surely if Indesign can handle one kind of variable it should handle another??
    Please help!

    Thanks all.
    Will- I tried adding another character to the text box but this made no difference.
    Eugene- I'm trying to avoid the purchase of any 3rd party plugins due to budget constraints.
    I realised that all I needed to do was use a wide paragraph rule to emulate a box behind the text, and make the text box long enough to hold all possible variables.
    One other issue has now cropped up, the running header (character) only grabs the text up to the first return, but I need it to grab all text formatted with the Character Style (2-3 lines max).
    I require a forced line break in the title (where the header is being pulled from) as it has a paragraph rule style attached, requiring a full return for each line of the title.
    Any ideas?

  • Master Text Frame for Page Heading

    Hello, I am new to indesign and using CS4.  Sorry if this is a newbie question.
    I am creating a pdf digital presentation and laying it out.  I want to create a consistent header on each page in the top left corner and ensure it is in the exact same location on each page.  I also want to make sure the text size, font, and color is consistent on each page.  Most importantly, if I need to change anything, lets say a font, I want to only do it in one place and not do it on all 20 pages in my document.
    My understanding is to add a text frame to the master page.  However, how do I edit the text on each page and not have it show on my cover page which is page 1 of my document?
    Thanks!!!!

    Create a text frame on the master page (make it wide enough and deep enough for the longest heading)
    Insert some generic text like "Heading"
    Give it a paragraph style
    Adjust the paragraph style to your liking
    Go to each page you want to change, and CTRL SHIFT (cmd shift on mac) and double click the "Heading"
    Change the text to what you want it to look like.
    To alter the text colour/font etc. for all of them - adjust the paragraph style
    To edit the text style for each heading so they look different in terms of colour etc. -  just change the Character Colour via the swatches.
    if you do this, then any changes to the Paragraph style should follow through on all pages - except where you've perhaps changed the character colour (or any other hand-adjusted changes to the text.
    Also - if you move the Text Frame on the master page they should all move on the corresponding pages, provided you haven't moved them by hand on the actual pages.

  • How to create, place, format and paste the clipboard contents into a text frame

    I am new to scripting and need help. I have an existing Indesign document. I need to be able to create a text frame on my current page, the width of my margins with the top of the text frame at the top margin and 1" in height, then format it to be 1-column, and then paste the clipboard contents into it and tag the text with a particular paragraph style. I am using Indesign CS4 on a mac, if that makes any difference. Thanks for any help.

    May this will help you. It will create an anchored object with a text what you desired, with object style. You should create an object style before with the x and y co ordinates. You can choose either para style or character style.
    var the_document = app.documents.item(0);
    // Create a list of paragraph styles
    var list_of_paragraph_styles = the_document.paragraphStyles.everyItem().name;

  • Removing text frames from rdf export format

    After a report has been exported in rdf format, can anyone tell me if there is a way to remove the text frames from the document, so that the formating is retained but by using word's tabs etc.
    Our client needs to manually add sections to the document after the report has been generated and we find that because of the text frames the document formatting gets ruined when new sections are added to the file.

    I don't know whether any of this will help?
    According to the manual there are only a very limited range of adjustments you can make to iMovie projects.
    Turn iMovie adjustments on or off
    When editing a project in iMovie, you can adjust several video attributes, such as exposure, brightness, and saturation, in the Project Browser. If you import an iMovie project that has these adjustments into Final Cut Pro, the adjustments are retained and appear in the Color area of the Video inspector as an iMovie item.
    Although you cannot modify the adjustments added in iMovie, you can choose whether they are applied to the clip or not.
    Note: Video adjustments you make to clips in the iMovie Event Browser are not retained and do not appear in Final Cut Pro.
    Turn a clipʼs iMovie adjustments on or off
    In the Timeline, select a clip with iMovie adjustments applied, and select or deselect the iMovie checkbox in the Color area of the Video inspector.
    Note: The iMovie adjustments appear only in the Timeline, not in the Event Browser.

  • After applying full scroll bar to the page including header and footer, Text editor ribbon actions cause page to automatically scroll down (while applying formatting)

    After applying full scroll bar to the page including header and footer, I have provided content to
    the page more than 100 lines and try to format the text from ribbon actions(format text area). On mouse over of font or fore color, the control jumps to the highlighted content area and not able to select the color. The page scrolls down and not able to click
    on any action.
    Consider this scenario also.
    A content editor web part is added toward the bottom of the page.
    Text is added to this (direct in the web part, not via a 'content link')
    You highlight some text and go to the Markup Style dropdown...
    Everything is fine until you hover over the "Paragraph" markup style, and suddenly the page scrolls to the web part you are editing, and you didn't have a chance
    to click and apply the "Paragraph" formatting
    I have tried testing this with text typed directly into the Content Editor, text pasted in from somewhere else, and text pasted in from somewhere else using "Paste as
    Plaintext" option in the ribbon.  In each scenario, I get the same results.
    Furthermore, I have also tested this in both IE8 and IE9 and get the same results.
    I can get it to occur most regularly with trying to apply the Paragraph "Markup Style" but
    I've also seen this happen with Font Size (any font size).  It's very frustrating since you aren't able to actually apply the formatting you need because the page jumps before you can click.  Has anyone experienced this before. Any feedback would
    help.

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that after applying full scroll bar to the page including header and footer, Text editor ribbon actions cause page to automatically scroll down (while applying formatting).
    I try to apply full scroll bar to the page including header and footer, the ribbon is missing after I scroll down to the web part. And I cannot apply the "Paragraph" markup style to the content.
    I recommend to use the SharePoint core styles to preserve the native functionality and GUI.
    By design in SharePoint, the ribbon is always at the top. When you select the content, you can apply the "Paragraph" markup style in the ribbon.
    Thanks,

  • What is the best way to import a graphic? & How do I create a text frame for a figure caption?

    Hello all! I've been working from the FM book for almost 2 hrs trying to figure this out, so now I need your help. I am almost to this point:
    Problem I: Importing a graphic
    First of all, which is the best way?
    -Insert an anchor frame and then import the graphic into the frame OR
    -Just insert the graphic and get the anchor frame by default
    Here’s my importing and sizing problem:
    I hit ENTER to make a new paragraph line (side note: the book says make a new paragraph by hitting ENTER, import the graphic, and then ESC m+p to shrink wrap so that you can avoid the graphic overlapping the above text. I do exactly this (I believe), but my graphic still overlaps the above text when I shrink wrap. What the...?)
    I insert an anchored frame with position Below Current Line and alignment CENTER (I chose to the insert anchor frame, since this way I have control over its alignment, correct?)
    Anchor frame is selected when I import my image file
    In the Imported Graphic Scaling box, what do I select if my file is HUGE (3072x2304)?
    -Fit in selected rectangle (when I choose this the image imports small and fits in the anchored frame with lots of white space around it)
    -72 dpi
    -75 dpi
    -150 dpi
    -300 dpi
    -Custom dpi: 96 (I’ve tried changing this to a smaller number (20) and I get a message that says “cannot handle a bitmap of that size.”)
    I’ve had the best luck with selecting FIT IN SELECTED RECTANGLE, and then I just scale the image with my shift+click. If I choose 72 dpi or Custom, my image imports HUGE, and I just can’t manage it. I don’t have a method for resizing these images outside of FM.
    Problem II: Creating a text frame for a caption
    Once I have chosen FIT IN SELECTED RECTANGLE, I try to insert a text box underneath the image (and inside the anchor frame) to type a caption in it.
    In Create New Text Frame box, the default is Number 1 and Gap 0.25. I click SET.
    Next, I double-click inside the text frame to begin typing, but the cursor is OUTSIDE and UNDERNEATH the text frame! What the heck??? I’ve done this before and it has worked just fine. Then I had another problem where when I did get the text inside the text frame, I would select the text frame to move it, and it left the text behind! (I moved the frame but the text was separated from it and left behind.)
    THANK YOU in advance for your help. I hope I wrote this out clearly enough. I appreciate those who respond. P.S. I'm in FM 10.

    My favorite method is to use a one-cell table for graphics and captions.
    Import the graphic by reference into the table cell. Create a "Caption"
    paragraph tag and assign it to the table title. (The title can be set
    for above or below the table cell. I prefer below.) Now, whenever you
    insert this table, it will be ready for graphic and caption. Another
    advantage of this method is that graphic and caption always stay
    together at page/column breaks.
    When you create the table format above, assign it to have a -2.0 space
    above. Then, create a paragraph tag, such as "TableAnchor" and assign it
    -2.0 pt font size and -2.0 space below. (You can substitute a different
    point size, but it must be the same in all three places. The TableAnchor
    paragraph will hold the table and these settings let tables fit against
    the top margin where necessary. Otherwise, they dip down a bit.
    I wrote this from memory, so I hope I remembered all the steps!

  • Problem with text frame dropshadow not completely printing to pdf file.

    Hi and thanks for your speedy replies!
    I am editing a file that had altered corner text frames with a .25 inset and a drop shadow added, .05 stroke and paper swatch. When I deleted text everything shifted so I had to recreate the special frames on select pages. These new text frames are not showing the top and left sides of the frames when saved to pdf file. The right and bottom drop shadow are showing.  What am I missing?
    Cheers!

    I am using the latest version in CC. I tried several exports directly from ID, PDF/X-3:2002, PDF/X-1a:2001 and the low res setting, all with no changes.  None showed the left or top border on the frames in question.
    So I was getting the first screen shot instead of the second which other similarly formatted frames showed.  I checked every setting I could find and they were all the same.  The problem just occurred after the point in the doc that I had made changes resulting in some pages being deleted and the page formatting being thrown off which I corrected with the appropriate saved page formats.  But when I went to set up the frame dropshadow and accompanying stroke and swatches, the outline just would not show in the pdf although it appeared to be showing in ID.
    I've since discovered a work around for the editing so no pages were deleted, but I need to figure out why this happened and what I am not seeing. Perhaps a setting to show the border? Or maybe it is some overall setting that I need to be looking for? Just weird, weird, weird...

  • [AS] Applescript - Duplicate paragraph from one text frame to end of second text frame?

    Working in InDesign CS5
    Still banging my head against the wall over this last bit of code I need to figure out to finish a much larger script. What I'm looking to do is take a paragraph ('contents' from looping in larger script) from one text frame and duplicate it to the END of a second text frame (represented by 'Ad_Box'). The only thing I've gotten to semi-work is this:
    set insertion point -1 of Ad_Box to contents
    The problems with the above script are:
    1. Minor problem (can be worked around in InDesign CS5) - The script does not keep the formatting from the original paragraph that I want duplicated. The paragraph style of all "inserted" paragraphs is set to default
    2. The big problem - When the second text frame is too small for a particular word in original paragraph, the paragraph is moved to the wrong position in the text frame when the script completes, which is moving 4 paragraphs in total (this one baffles me). In other words, if I'm running script to be p1, p2, p3, p4 and p2 had a word too long to fit in text frame, on completion it will look like p1, p3, p4, p2.
    This is why I'm hoping to use the DUPLICATE command in some capacity, but I'm stumped. I set up a dialogue prompt to help me debug, and whenever I use the DUPLICATE command my script skips right over the dialogue, so I know it's not reading properly. This is what I've tried with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
      duplicate contents to insertion point -1 of Ad_Box

    Mary, you were absolutely correct!! This fixes the problem of placing the contents into the wrong spot, AND it runs the script much faster too! Thank you.
    However it is still not carrying over my "applied paragraph style" that is on "contents". Does 'insertion point' not work this way?
    What looks like is happening is that in the InDesign app, whatever my default selected paragraph style is is what the insertion point type is placing as.
    I might try to set my applied paragraph style after the "last insertion point" call and see if that works. I'll update this reporting results

  • Can you connect differently tagged text frames?

    I have a one file document (no book) that I would like to have two columns on the first page and the Left/Right pages have one column with a side head. I would like the right column on the first page to flow into the second page.
    Is there a way to connect differently tagged text frames together so that, although their appearances are different, the text flows from one to the other?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    You can manually connect text frames on body pages, or on master pages, that have the same flow tag. Search Google for "framemaker connect text frames" without quotes.
    For the text to flow automatically from one body-page text frame to a body-page text frame on another, and create new pages as needed, the text frames need to be on master pages, have the Autoconnect property turned on, and be in the same text flow. FrameMaker only applies Left and Right master pages (you get them if your document is set for facing page.) To apply custom master pages instead of Left and Right, you need to set up a mapping table on a reference page for use with the Apply Master Pages feature. Search Google for "framemaker apply master pages mapping table" without quotes.
