Unwanted Sleep

I'll keep this short. My Powerbook 17' is sleeping without request or reason at seemingly random times, and then it won't wake back up. The LED pulses dimly, and it won't wake back up no matter what I press or do, and it won't shut down by holding the powerbutton. When I close the lid, the LED sleep light pulses a lot brighter, like normal sleep, but when I open it again same thing. LED dims but still pulses, and it won't wake up. The only way I can get my computer back is to unplug it, remove the battery and hit the kill key. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.6 Intel Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
Cheers!

  • G5 unwanted sleep in off hours

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up my hard drive to an external drive.
It had been working fine for months but now the ccc. log says the system is going to sleep and ccc. can't do anything about it.
The result is ccc. can't do its nightly backup.
Yet I have "never" checked off in the Energy Saver settings for the computer.
What other things can I look at to keep the computer running all night?
    Thank you,
    Dan Tee

There is a free application called Caffeine, which when enabled will keep your computer awake. This will also prevent any screen savers from running, as well as keep your display from going to sleep, so this may not be an ideal option for you.
I'm sure others will chime in with alternatives.

  • Unwanted sleep mode

How do I stop my macbook going into sleep mode when it is unatended and Energy Saver set to NEVER. This is annoying as I want to leave laoptop on overnight to download large files. This is currently not possible as the macbook quits Bittorrent download application and goes to sleep. Can anyone help?
    MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.7)

be sure to set the sleep options for both battery and AC Adapter use. They each have a setting for sleep options...go to the system preferences and select energy saver...then set the parameters for both battery and AC Adapter...then depending on how you are powering the macbook...the respective sleep settings will apply...I hope this answers your question...

  • [Solved] Entering unwanted sleep?

    Hi,
I just installed Arch linux on my desktop.
I run on it from a laptop through tightvnc.
About once per hour the vncviewer screen (running on my laptop) freezes and I have to kill it. I believe that the computer running the tightvnc server has then gone into sleep mode because I just have to press its power button to be able to reconnect to its tightvnc server.

    Thanks hcjl!
If I run dcon-editor as root I can at least find the power setting (I believe), in Org>Gnome>Settings-daemon>Plugins>Power, and I can deactivate the "Active" option.
But, I don't think that this is the way to do it, right? You should do it as user gdm? Anyway, after changing it as root I still fall into sleep mode...
I just can't get any of the ways proposed in the Wiki to run:
    # xhost +SI:localuser:gdm
localuser:gdm being added to access control list
X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request:  109 (X_ChangeHosts)
      Value in failed request:  0x5
Serial number of failed request:  6
Current serial number in output stream:  8
    # -u gdm dbus-launch dconf-editor
    bash: -u: command not found
I also tried to do it the other proposed way by:
    # cp -t /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow /usr/share/applications/dconf-editor.desktop
But nothing happens when I logout and look at the gdm screen.

  • Long back-and-forth with Lenovo... any suggestions?

Below is a excruciatingly detailed record of my long struggle with Lenovo's customer support regarding my T61, for which I purchased a warranty that is good until June 26, 2010. This is the result of painstaking documentation all along the way; I have the actual case reference numbers and serial numbers, etc., if it would help anyone from Lenovo who happens across this.
    On Monday, April 27, 2009, my T61 (7662-CTO) began
experiencing persistent crashes. The machine would give me a BSOD
(Blue Screen of Death) on occasion while in Windows. Despite repeated
installations of my graphic card's drivers (for the Nvidia Quadro NVS
140m), the problem continued to worsen. Eventually, the machine
refused to even boot up, throwing out a 'memory parity error' BSOD
soon after the Windows boot-up screen. Even my attempts at
reinstalling Windows (Vista Home Premium x86) did nothing to correct
the issues. It was increasingly apparent that I was facing a hardware
    problem.
Since my machine remains under warranty, I called Lenovo's tech
support. After a bit of redundant troubleshooting (he asked me to
reinstall drivers that I had already installed multiple times), the
support agent agreed to send out a box and have the machine shipped
out to EasyServ in Tennessee. Reluctantly, I agreed and sent the box
off. This was Lenovo case reference number 1.
The service was amazingly quick, as I had the machine back in just
over 36 hours. That I appreciated. I was less grateful for the state
of the machine upon its return. True, the BSOD/graphics card issues
had apparently been addressed; the form letter returned with the
laptop claimed that EasyServ 'Quality Technician' A. Rios had replaced
the 'PLANAR CARD ASM EXTERNAL VIDEO' --part number 41W1489. Glad to
have my machine back for work, I once again reinstalled Windows Vista.
Yet I soon realized that the machine had another serious problem.
Putting my T61 into sleep was a risky proposition; within several
minutes, all indicator lights would blink off, and the machine would
offer no signs of life. Pushing the power button did nothing.
Replacing the battery did nothing. Whether plugged in or not, the
machine refused to respond. Repeated power button pushes would
occasionally rouse the machine to 'life,' but as soon as it dropped
into sleep mode again, it would eventually drop dead.
Increasingly unhappy, I called Lenovo support again. They apologized
for the continued faulty hardware and sent out another overnight box
for the return freight to Tennessee. I dutifully shipped the T61 out
again--this was case reference number 2. Once again, the machine
zipped through EasyServ very quickly. It came back 2 days later, with
a "Repair Action Report" form that indicated that M. Anderson had
service the machine. Checked off were boxes for "system board/planar"
(though what exact part was replaced was not indicated this time),
"updated BIOS/embedded controller," and "performed PC Doctor
    diagnostics to ensure hardware functionality."
Assured that my problems were (finally!) fixed, I set to reinstalling
Windows. I did all the little software installations and tweaks that I
need to get work done on my new machine. But once everything was set
up, another problem popped up its ugly head. When I did anything that
required some processor power (say, watching video online or running a
virus scan), the machine would mysteriously and spontaneously freeze
up and drop itself into sleep mode. When roused from its stupor, the
machine would immediately give up and return to sleep. Aggravated, I
tried yet another fresh install of Windows and was astonished to find
out that Vista refused to install properly, citing an 'incompatible
    hardware' error.
Needless to say, I called Lenovo support once again (case reference
number 3). The first technician I spoke to demanded
that I remove the hard drive I had placed into the machine with the
one originally shipped with the T61. I protested that this was the
Seagate Momentus 7200.2 (200 GB), and it was unlikely that it was the
source of the problem (since the original hard drive had been the
Seagate Momentus 7200.1 (60 GB). But apparently having no choice, I
gave in. We ended our call, I opened up the machine, and swapped hard
drives. I also went ahead and pulled out the extra RAM I had put into
the box--anticipating the next technicians' likely protests. When
Windows gave me the same errors as before, I called Lenovo back. I
explained the whole situation, going back to the video card
replacement that started the whole series of issues. When I explained
how I had attempted to reinstall Windows, the technician repeatedly
asked me if I had changed the boot order on the machine. "No," I
answered. "You don't actually need to. The BIOS throws up a 'Press any
key to boot from the CD/DVD drive' prompt." There was a short pause.
"Did you change the BIOS boot order?" I rolled my eyes and eventually
capitulated to the technician's request. After thus proving that I
actually did know how to boot from my DVD drive, the technician asked
about my installation disc. "You don't have the Rescue and Recovery
discs?" he asked, obviously confused. "No," I answered. "The only disc
I received with my laptop was a clean Vista install/upgrade disc."
There was a long pause, after which the technician insisted that I use
    the Lenovo-issued R&R discs.
After receiving said discs through UPS (4 days later), I tried things
again. The Lenovo R&R program was able to successfully re-image my
hard drive with Vista Home Premium. But the odd spontaneous sleep
problem remains. Determined to receive the 'incompatible hardware'
error I had received before, I tried reinstalling with the vanilla
Vista disc; this time, the installation proceeded without a hitch, and
this is the OS that's installed now on the machine. Yet the sleep mode
problem remains. After monitoring system temperature during
high-intensity computing (i.e. running virus scan, Windows Defender
scan, and HD online video all at the same time), it seems likely that
there is some sort of overheating issue. The machine (specifically, the "ACPI Thermal Zone," according to the temperature-monitors program I used) occasionally leaps to 97 degrees Celsius and higher, and this seems to correspond
    to the shut-downs.
Eager to avoid another EasyServ roundabout, a new technician and I agreed that taking the T61 to a licensed Lenovo warranty service provider would probably be the best option. He offered the Duke Computer Repair shop as my first option. "Great!" I thought, "I'm a Duke student; this should be relatively painless." What the Lenovo rep. DIDN'T tell me was that Duke charged $90 to work on any machine that wasn't bought through their Computer Store. I discovered this when I drove to the Duke repair shop and talked to the people there (who were, admittedly, apologetic and very willing to offer advice). Not excited about shelling out cash to have my warranty honored, I opted to take the laptop to the next nearest authorized Lenovo warranty service provider. This was a 25-minute drive for me, but I had few other options that didn't involve a $90 service charge. Choice received the machine in on Tuesday, May 19th.
The Lenovo-approved warranty service technician here was remarkably helpful and engaged. He WAS able to reproduce the problem; the laptop aborted into sleep when the CPU was pushed, just as it did for me. Roger also ran a full diagnostic, but his diagnostic did not return any hardware failures that he could replace. He 'discharged the capacitors,' holding the power button down for a full 30 seconds (a process similar to what brought the laptop out of its dead state under case reference number 30TQLB5 above. This seemed to resolve things, he explained, and he encouraged me to take the machine home and see how things went. Unfortunately, the issue persists; pushing the CPU to 100% drops my T61 into sleep mode, often repeatedly
I called Lenovo again. The technician demanded that I install the Power Manager and power management driver from Lenovo before we proceed any further. I resisted, convinced long ago that the machine was suffering a hardware issue, NOT a driver issue) and asked to speak to the technician's supervisor. He said, "Fine," and abruptly dropped me to being on hold. Fully fifteen minutes later (I timed this), another technician picked up, entirely unaware that I had spoken to anyone else or that I was "waiting" for a supervisor. I do not know if I was actually in queue to speak to that first technician's supervisor, or whether that technician had grown tired and decided to relegate me to hold music limbo. The second technician decided to open a new case (my fourth case reference number). He, too, demanded that I install the relevant drivers. Relucantly, I hung up and installed the driver and Power Manager utility.
The problem persisted. In fact, after the installation, the machine went into sleep twice during the startup process--before I even reached the Vista desktop. I called Lenovo back. Running through his protocols, the technician asked whether I had updated the BIOS (the second EasyServ service had done this, and I had double-checked this when I got the machine back). He asked again whether I had actually installed the Power Manager and power management driver. I had. The technician then gave me the equivalent of a shrug. "We could send it back to the depot," he offered, referring again to EasyServ. When I explained (again) that the Lenovo-approved warranty service provider had run all the relevant diagnostics, found no replaceable part, and acknowledged that a problem remained. When I asked the technician on the line about a possible system replacement, he was quick to claim that his department--the system support specialists--could not do this. He shrugged me off and suggested that I call the sales department about any sort of replacement or refund. "And will they have access to my case reference information?" I asked, incredulous that he was referring me to sales--two full years after the machine's actual purchase. "I don't know," he answered. "All I know is that I can't do anything else."
It has now been three and a half weeks since my machine first began having major issues. This laptop has been to EasyServ twice and come back each time with new hardware-related issues. It has been taken to a Lenovo-approved warranty service provider, who acknowledged and reproduced the problem but was unable to repair it. I have called Lenovo's customer support number at least a dozen times and spent HOURS giving case reference numbers, explaining and REexplaining my issues, and waiting on hold. I have gotten little actual work done in these past weeks. I have reinstalled or reimaged Windows at LEAST 10 times. My school fieldwork requires me to have a working machine. I also enrolled in lynda.com's online tutorials for the month of May (through Duke University), but these extended, unresolved problems have cost me dearly. If there is anything that anyone on these forums can do, please help. Help me get my warranty honored. Please, help restore my faith in the Thinkpad legacy.
    Thanks for your time.

TPFanControl reads the temperatures reported by your ThinkPad's "embedded controller"--which controls the fan speed. You can use it just for monitoring temperatures, you don't have to control the fan with it (read the documentation for the config file).
RMClock, among other things, plots cpu frequency, voltage and temperature vs. time. This can be useful to observe when your cpu is throttling itself to avoid overheating. You can also use RMClock to undervolt your cpu to lower temperatures. But you shouldn't have to do that to prevent the problems you're having.
mprime in torture test mode will stress your cpu and memory. You can run this while monitoring your system temperatures. At the very least, running the mprime torture test should quickly tell you whether your unwanted sleep is indeed correlated with cpu activity.

  • Network Media Player (Noontec V9-T) unable to access network shares on WIN8 Pro

I have just upgraded from Windows 7 home premium 64 bit to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. After the upgrade, I made sure my video library was shared (both with the homegroup and my username) and that network discovery was enabled file sharing enabled etc etc.
On the Noontec Media centre I can see the workgoup called WORKGROUP. When I click on it I can see the name of my PC. But when I click on the pc name to log in to access the shares within it comes up with a username/pass box comes up. I then put in my username/pass
on the windows 8 pro machine, to which the Noontec receives an error message stating cannot login.
Previously I had enabled sharing with everyone (read only) on windows 7 home and this username/pass dialog box never appeared. Just said successful logon. So i tried sharing video library with "everyone" in windows 8 pro, the unit still can't log on.
I believe this noontec uses Samba. The last updated samba file was named "samba_3.0.23c_mipsel.ipk" when I updated the media players samba about 9 months-a year ago. i have checked the manufacturers website, there has been no further updates released.
Is there a way for me to access network shares from this media centre by maybe installing a new samba server on the windows 8 machine that is compatible with older samba clients? I am not savy with samba clients/servers at all, I just loved the way XP network
shares always seemed to work across multiple platforms... and win7/8 doesn't. Help anyone?

A lot of these media players will not work correctly. If your Video files are stored as .avi, MKV, MP4 etc.. pretty much anything excpet for .ISO, the best way is to use Plex media server on the windows 8 PC. It's free and should allow you to organise files
and libraries as you want.In fact, it's my preferred access method now, as most, smart TVs also support plex and support it well....allowing me to play the files directly in my smart TV, without using the Media players.
In addition if you have an Android tablet or phone, you can (if you want) access your media files from Plex using Media Monkey (free) and simply play them direct to the TV, Media Monkey simply hands the data stream over to the smart TV.
I have a similar set of media players and exactly the same problem with windows 8,8.1, previous shares on versions 7, vist etc..work perfectly. I use a free application on my android phone to remote start my media server/s (via the network card).
Shutter Light - Free monitoring activity and network data, to prevent unwanted sleep during Videos and to ensure the PC goes into sleep mode (disabling windows power management)
Plex simplifies everything and acts as a great central server for all types of devices and can bring media files together from different Directories/Disks, in to one set of Libraries.

  • Mac Pro - Unwanted Waking From Sleep - A Possible Fix

I've suffered intermittent unwanted wakes on my Mac Pro for years, although there have been months in which it seemed to go away. Console consistently suggested that the problem was a USB hub (EHCI), which I traced to my Apple 24-inch HD Cinema Display. Here's a sample from the Console-
11/22/10 10:28:32 PM kernel Wake reason = EHCI
11/22/10 10:28:32 PM kernel System Wake
11/22/10 10:28:32 PM kernel The USB device HubDevice (Port 5 of Hub at 0xfd000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)
When the problem started recurring last month, my "fix" was simple: unplugging the video display's USB cable. The display's USB hub is, of course, no longer available, but I plugged a third-party hub into the USB input that the display had previously been using, plugged in all the peripherals that I'd previously used the display's hub for, and so far no unwanted wakes. The only difference I've noticed is that the display's little power indicator light (bottom left corner) no longer lights up, but that's a small price to pay for being able to put my system soundly to sleep.
If the ghost returns, I'll let you know.

This a is common sleep issue. This person has it.
In my sleep tip faq, the first tip I give is this......
"USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit."

  • Apple wired keyboard cause unwanted wakeup from sleep

    Hi,
when I want to sleep (either by keyboard or power button) Mac mini, the computer enters sleep.
Unfortunately, after a few seconds, the computer wakes up without interference.
I've tried all the recommended procedures to fix problems with sleeping/waking without success.
When I disconnect the keyboard and press power button, the computer falls to sleep and remains in sleep.
When I connect this keyboard to another Mac Mini, this is also self-awakening.
Please, can anybody help me with this strange problem?

As I noted above, computer goes to sleep by every way - power button, sleep timer, shortcut or menu.
But remains sleeping ONLY with keyboard unconnected.
Problematic keyboard worked well for many months until recently.
Same situation is on another Mac mini.
With another keyboard (from old PC) everything works fine (except hibernating shortcut, of course).

Since the last auto upgrade for my OS X... with classic open not necessarily using program in classic...as this has occurred using Safari as well....but as an example... making a pdf from Quark5.0 Acrobat 5.0 curser/clock vanishes and my system goes to sleep...is only remedied by shutting down classic and occasionally the OS X freezes. macopaco:
Before you attempt any kind of reinstallation you should make yourself a good backup of your computer or at least of your User Folder and any third party applications. I recommend cloning the entire HDD to an external Firewire Hard Disk Drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. If you use Carbon Copy Cloner go to Preferences and check the box Make Bootable. In SuperDuper go to Options and check Make bootable. This way your clone can serve as an emergency startup drive.
To preserve your settings and preferences as well as to save your User Folder choose the Archive and Install. Here is a suggested procedure to Archive and Install:
Here are some suggestions on installation:
    Panther: Archive and Install
If you do not have your original install disks or a Full Retail Version you can get one at AppleRescue or on eBay relatively inexpensively.
If you have the Full Retail Version of Panther (computer specific disks for your computer) here is what you do.
    1. Warning: Although we will use Archive and Install there is always a risk something can go wrong. As a precaution back up your User Folder and any third party applications you can't afford to lose.
    2. Check to see if you have the latest <a "href=http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117">Firmware Update
. Note: You must be in OS 9.1 or later to update firmware
    3. Boot from the install disk holding down the C key.
    4. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility.
    5. Run Repair Disk. If there are problems, run it until no problems are reported. If it reports that it can't repair the problems you might need TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    6. While still in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Archive and Install. This saves your data in a Previous Systems folder, which you can retrieve after installation.
    9. You might want to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Follow prompts and set up computer.
    12. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    13. Go online and download updates, or go to Software Update under the Apple Menu and update your OS.
    14. Transfer your User Folder from Previous Systems folder.
Post back with any questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Airport wireless loosing connection after sleep

Hi, everyone. every time that my macbook comes back from sleep it does not recognize my network, and start looking for all the networks in my area, so in order to reconnect i have to turn off airport and turn on and then it automatically connect and recognize my network, why is this happening.
please help, i am using airport extreme base station as my router.
    Thanks

Try going to system preferences/network/airport and deleting all the unwanted old connections you have made in the past. Make sure the default is set to the top position of the few you decide to keep. By cleaning this up i found it always found the connection upon wakeup

  • Mouse laggy or unresponsive after leaving sleep

Sometimes when my MBP leaves sleep the mouse (trackpad) jumps randomly around the screen. I've discovered that enabling the wifi causes it to be better behaved, but it remains slightly jerky and laggy. If I turn the wireless back off, it will jump around the screen again until I manage to re-enable the wireless.
Disabling/Enabling bluetooth doesn't affect this behavior. top doesn't show anything using more than 5% of the CPU, iostat doesn't show massive amounts of transfer, lots of RAM in use, but a lot is still free too. Logging out and logging back in doesn't fix it. There isn't much running it could be since I just logged out and logged back in to try to fix it.
One interesting note is that the screensaver visualization is also jumpy and slow.
Messages like these also appear in the system log:
    IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Unwanted Direction Change X: oldDx=6 dx=-1500
    IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Unwanted Direction Change Y: oldDy=6 dy=-1500
    IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Unwanted Direction Change X: oldDx=0 dx=0
Any ideas? I do not have the iStat widget that is repeatedly blamed in other threads.

    NUXI,
I just got bitten by the same symptom. I'm beginning to think there's some problem with sleep and my MBP. I've had quite a few instances where it hasn't waken from sleep completely.
I'm certain it entered sleep since the LED was pulsing as normal - then when I lift the lid - the sleep LED goes off - but the display never comes back. I've listened carefully to the bottom of the unit and I can hear the HD spinning again - and both fans spin up - but the display doesn't start up. There is no backlight and no image either.
After that - the machine never seems right again other than rebooting. I was able to "wake" the screen by using another mac to "share the screen" - once I logged in over the network - the screen woke up the rest of the way.
Just like you - CPU usage is less than 5% - but the trackpad just doesn't respond smoothly. I have nothing connected - bluetooth is off, wifi is my network, but the track pad just became unusable. The keyboard did seem to be responsive - the shortcut key for logging out worked pretty much instantly - but the trackpad was useless...
    Tons of <pre>2/3/08 8:46:46 PM kernel IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Unwanted Direction Change Y: oldDy=-2 dy=264 </pre> messages - between 30 to 60 per second were logged...
It seems to me that something else was dragging the system down and this was just a side effect of the polling mechanism not getting input in a timely manner....

  • I can not delete unwanted message because I am not getting the delete button popup to activate deletion. Where did it go!?

I can not delete unwanted emails because my delete prompt button is not appearing after I prompt edit and choose my email to edit. How do I make the prompt button to appear on edit page as before?    Thanks MRH

Close out of the mail app, double tap the home button and completely close out of the app.
then do a reset, no data loss.  Hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
then check and see if you can delete emails.
