[UPDATED] Setting up RAID 1 consisting of ramdisk and /dev/sda2

I'm not quite sure which board this question belongs to, so I'll post it in the newbie section, as I feel like one right now.
I need help with setting up my root partition as a RAID 1 of a ramdisk and a partition on my disk.
I have a very fresh arch install (2014-03-20) running on a this system:
512M /dev/sda1 vfat -> /boot (boot- and uefi-partition)
12G /dev/sda2 ext4 -> /
104.5G /home
64G RAM
My wish is to run / as a RAID 1 of the 12G /dev/sda2 ext4 and a 12G Ramdisk ext4.
I have read this great post on doing exactly this and the entire thread it is posted in, concerning running Arch entirely in RAM. But, to the best of my understanding, the use of a simple block device in RAM such as /dev/rd/0 has since been deprecated. I have been able to set them up manually with:
$ sudo mknod -m 660 /dev/rd b 1 1
But when I try to zero out the space I need on the device I'm unable to write more than 16 Mb of data to the device.
$ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rd bs=1K count=12288k
dd: error writing ‘/dev/rd’: No space left on device
16385+0 records in
16384+0 records out
16777216 bytes (17 MB) copied, 0.0222693 s, 753 MB/s
Likewise, I'm unable to set up a ext4fs larger than 16M on the device.
From what I have understood, this 16 M limit comes from the ramdisk_size kernel param during boot or from the rd_size param when loading the rd kernel module. Only problem is, the kernel param ramdisk_size=12582912 doesn't seem to help me and there doesn't seem to be any rd module in the arch kernel.
So my questions for now:
* Is there some other way than rd_size and ramdisk_size to set maximum ramdisk size to 12G?
* Am I doing something wrong?

This may not be what you want, but I managed to mount a ramdisk as the root /.
I was not interested to tried setting up such an array, as it seems to me that the ramdisk method is more flexible than the array method. By flexibility, I mean that the size of the ramdisk can be changed between reboots, but the array cannot -- I don't think that an array can be expanded or shrinked once created. Also, the disk is not needed to be accessed once the ramdisk is ready; and you can choose what folders of the root hierarchy to be copied into RAM.

I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch and just did the update to IOS 5. Now I can't connect to my Netgear wifi router. My iPhone connects fine along with all of my other laptops etc. I have the router set with WPA-PSK [TKIP] security and an access list. I've confirmed the mac address is included on that list and that the password is correct. Under choses netwrok I select the network and it just goes into a spin. I have tried removing the password and the access list settings and it still will not complete the connection to the router thus no internet access. The routers firmware is also up to date. This thing worked fine before this update and I've already tried to restore from backup. Any ideas or is the wifi nic bad in this thing with the new apple firmware update? Any fix?

Thanks Bob, I don't know why but it all of a sudden worked a few days later. It's a mystery but at least problem solved.

Oh goodness,SLEEPER888. We wish you didn't have this problem while trying to complete this update. You have done quite a bit of troubleshooting on your own. If the phone update does not take, we would need to replace it with the warranty. Is it still locked up?

Hi everyone, I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have been very very frustrated by this problem. [I could not create new windows, and anything that opens new windows, such as trying to see what Add-ons you have etc would not work]. I read about changing screen alignment to the top... I have one screen so the option does not exist. The above messages would not fix this problem. I searched hard and did find a solution in the end. I read stuff about removing Add-ons until the problem is fixed, but its simply not the case.
First of all open Firefox. next go to options: Help --- 'Restart with Add-ons disabled'. Tick the box for add-ons, restart firefox. Next go to Tools --- Add-ons. Next (In the Add-ons Manager' click on 'Plugins' on the left hand side pane. Look for the small blue writing that says 'Check to see if your plugins are up to date'.
Now notice it should say 'Missing Flash'. "For your safety, Firefox has disabled your outdated version of Flash. Please upgrade to the latest version". I followed this, reinstalled Flash and it now works as it always did, no problems. For people where the above fix didn't work, try this one out. Hope it helps people!

I set up Raid on my Mac Mini Server and lost my Server software. It is not listed in my "purchased" apps. How can I get it w/o having to purchase it? Will my serial # be enough to show it is a mini server and under warrantee be enough to get it back?

If it's not listed in Purchases, check that it's hidden, and if so, unhide it > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928 After that, go to Purchases and download OS X Server.

Shouldn't take more than a few seconds to a minute.  If it's stuck, you might want to give Apple support a call to see if they are experiencing unreported server issues.  Since your device is new, you are within the 90-day free call support period.  You can set up the call here: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/.  You will need your serial number, which is on the box and (I believe) the back of your iPad.

  • Software RAID Failure - my experience and solution

I just wanted to share this information with the iCloud community.
I searched a bit and did not find much information that was useful with regard to my software RAID issue.
I have 27 inch Mid 2011 iMac with SSD and Hard drive which has been great.
I added an external hard drive (I think if I mention any brand name the moderator will delete this post) which includes an nice aluminum case with two 3 TB hard drives within it, and it has a big blue light on the front and is connected via Thunderbolt. This unit is about 2 years old and I have it configured in a 3 TB mirrored RAID (RAID 1) via a software RAID configured via Mac OS Disk Utility.
I had at one point a minor glitch which was fixed using another piece of software (again if I mention a brand the moderator will delete this post) which is like a 'Harddrive Fighter' or similar type name LOL.   So otherwise that RAID has served me well as a site for my Time Machine back up and Aperture Vault, etc.  (I created a 1.5 TB Sparse bundle for Time Machine so that the backup would not use the entire 3 TBs)
I recently purchased a second aluminum block of drives, and set that up as a 4 TB RAID 1.
Each of the two RAIDs are set with the option of “Automatically rebuild RAID mirror sets” checked.
I put only about 400 gb on the new RAID to let it sit for a ‘burning in period.’
A few days ago the monitoring software from the vendor who sells the aluminum block of drives told me I had a problem.  One of the drives had “Failed.”   The monitoring software strangely enough does not distinguish the drives so you can figure out which pair had the issue, so I assumed it was the New 8 TB model.  Long story short, it was the older 6 TB model, but that does not matter for this discussion.
I contacted the vender and this is part of their response.
“This is an indication that the Disk Utility application in Mac had a momentary problem communicating with the drive mechanism. As a result, it marked that drive as "failed" in the header information. Unfortunately, once this designation is applied to a drive by the OS, the Disk Utility will thereafter refuse to attempt any further operations with that disk until the incorrect "failed" marker is manually cleared off the drive.”
That did not sound very good to me…..back up killed by a SOFTWARE GLITCH?
“The solution is to remove the corrupted volume header, and allow the generation of a new one….This command will need to be done for each disk in the array… (using Terminal)…
    diskutil zerodisk (identifier)
…3. After everything is finished, you should be able to exit Terminal, and go back into the Disk Utility Application to re-configure the RAID array on the device.”
    Furthermore they said.
“If the Disk Utility has placed a flag into the RAID array header (which exists on both drives) then performing this procedure on a single drive will not correct anything.”
    And…
“When a drive actually does fail, it typically stops appearing in the Disk Utility application altogether. In that circumstance, it will never be marked "failed" by the Disk Utility, so the header erase operation is not needed.”
This all sounded like a bad idea to me. And what does the Vendors RAID monitor software say then?  “Disk Really Really FAILED, check for a fire.”
As I tried to figure out which drive was actually the bad RAID pair I stumbled on a solution.
First I noted that the OS Disk Utility did NOT show a fault in the RAID. It listed both RAIDS as “Online.’ Thus no rebuilding was needed and it did not begin the rebuild process.
The Vendors disk monitor software saw some fault, but Mac was still able to read and write to the RAID, both disks in the mirror.  I wrote a folder to the RAID and with various rebooting steps I pulled the “Bad” drive and looked at the “Good” Drive….the folder was there…I put the Bad drive back in and pulled the Good Drive and the folder was there on the “bad” drive.  So it wrote to both drives.  AND THE VENDORS MONITORING SOFTWARE SHOWED THE PREVIOUSLY LABELED ‘BAD’ DRIVE AS ‘GOOD’ AND THE MISSING DRIVE SLOT AS ‘BAD’.
My stumbled FIX.   I moved a bunch of files off the failed RAID to the new RAID  but before I moved the sparse bundle, a folder of 500 gigs movies and some other really big folders the DISK UTILITY WINDOW (which I still had open) now showed that the RAID had a Defect and began rebuilding the mirror set itself, out of the blue!   I don't know why this happened.  But moving about 1/2 of the data off of it perhaps did something?  Any Ideas?
This process took a few hours as best I can tell (let it run overnight) and the next day the RAID was fine and the Vendors RAID monitor did not show a fault any longer.
So, the Vendors RAID monitoring software reporting a “FAILED” drive without any specific error codes to look up.  Perhaps they could have more info for the user on the specific fault?  The support line of the the Vendor said with certainty “the Volume Header is corrupted” and THE ONLY FIX is to completely ZERO THE DRIVE! This was not necessary as it turns out.
And the stick in the eye to me…..
“I've also sometimes seen the drives get marked as "failed" by the disk utility due to a shaky connection. In some cases, swapping the ends of the Thunderbolt cable will help with this. Something to try, perhaps, if your problems come back. “
    Ya Right…..
    Mike

    Follow up.
After going through the Zeroing process and rebuilding the RAID set three times, with various configurations, LaCie finally agreed to repair the unit under warrantee.
I tried swapping the power supplies and thunderbolt wires, tried taking the drive out of series with the newer big brother of it.  And it still failed after a few days.
I just wanted to share more of what I learned with regard to rebuilding the RAID sets via the Terminal.  The commands can be typed partially and a help paragraph will come up to give VERY cryptic descriptions of the proper use of the commands.
First Under terminal you can used the command "diskutil appleRAID list" to list those drives which are in the RAID.  This gives you the ID number for each physical drive. For example:
    AppleRAID sets (1 found)
    ===============================================================================
    Name:                 LaCie RAID 3TB
    Unique ID:            84A93ADF-A7CA-4E5A-B8AE-8B4A8A6960CA
    Type:                 Mirror
    Status:               Online
    Size:                 3.0 TB (3000248991744 Bytes)
    Rebuild:              manual
    Device Node:          disk4
    #  DevNode   UUID                                  Status     Size
    0  disk3s2   D53F6A81-89F1-4FB3-86A9-8808006683C2  Online     3000248991744
    -  disk2s2   E58CA8F5-1D2C-423A-B4BE-FBAA80F85879  Spare      3000248991744
    ===============================================================================
In my situation with the failed RAID, I had an extra disk in this with the status of Missing/Failed.
The command is "diskutil appleRAID remove" and the cryptic help paragraph says:
    Usage:  diskutil appleRAID remove MemberDeviceName|MemberUUID
            RAIDSetVolumePath|RAIDSetDeviceName|RAIDSetUUID
MemberDeviceName|MemberUUID  is the number listed in the "diskutil appleRAID List" command,  and
RAIDSetVolumePath|RAIDSetDeviceName|RAIDSetUUID is the Device Node for the RAID which here is /dev/disk4.
I used this command to remove the third entry (missing/failed), I did not copy the terminal window text on that one, so I cannot show the list of three disks.
I could not get to remove the disk2s2 disk listed as SPARE, as it gave an error message:
    Michaels-iMac:~ mike_aronis$ diskutil appleraid remove E58CA8F5-1D2C-423A-B4BE-FBAA80F85879 /dev/disk4
Started RAID operation on disk4 LaCie RAID 3TB
    Removing disk from RAID
    Changing the disk type
Can't resize the file system on the disk "disk2s2"
Error: -69827: The partition cannot be resized
But I was able to remove it using the graphical interface Disk Utility program using the delete key.
I then rebuilt the RAID set by dragging the second drive back into the RAID set.
I could not get the command: "diskutil appleRAID update AutoRebuild 1 /dev/disk4" to work, because even though it was trying to execute it HUNG.  I put the two drives into my newer LaCie 2big as my attempt at further trouble shooting the RAID (this was not suggested by LaCie tech), rebuild the RAID and now I am going to leave it setup that way for a few days before I ship it back to just see if the old drives work fine in the new RAID box (thus proving the RAID box is the problem). I tried the AutoRebuild 1 command just now and it gave an error.
    Michaels-iMac:~ mike_aronis$ diskutil appleraid update autorebuild 1 /dev/disk4
Error updating RAID: Couldn't modify RAID (-69848)
    Michaels-iMac:~ mike_aronis$
In my haste to rebuild the RAID set for the third or forth time as LaCie led me through the testing this and test that phase, I forgot to click the "Auto Rebuild" option in the Disk Utility program.
    Question for the more experienced:
As I was working on this issue, I notice that each time I rebooted and did work in the Terminal (with and without the RAID plugged in to the thunderbolt connection) I notice that the list of drives would change and my main boot drive would not stay listed as drive 0!  Some times it would be drive 0, sometimes the RAID would be listed as Drive 0.  It's strange to me...I would have thought the designation for Drive0 and Drive1 would always be my two build in drives (SSD and spinning drive).
    Mike

hello i am trying to help a friend to get the update for the mac os x maverick and msg pops up saying distribution file not verified

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • RAID 1 (mirroring), cloning and booting...

After recently buying a new dual quad-core, I wanted to expand the hard drive space a bit, and enhance the security of a part of the data. Having a 500G disk in bay 1, I planned on putting one additional 500G to create a mirror with the original one, and two more disks simply for space (500G and 1T). I soon encountered some problems..
As I don't have a RAID card installed, I would have to use Apple's software RAID from within Disk Util; but I soon discovered I would need to initialize both disks that were to be in the RAID (is there a reason for this? I expected I could create a clone drive, so a mirror with one in the RAID already present...). Well, this would mean I have to backup all my data first, then boot from another disk (like the Leopard install disk), create the RAID and replace all my data... So here are my current problems:
    - my Mac Pro won't boot from the Leopard install disk (it's an original Universal disk, so that shouldn't be it); it won't boot from other external disks either, but I believe that's caused by the partition tables being in APM, not GUID, as they were created on a G4...
    - I need to make a complete clone of the boot disk, but all I can do with Disk Util (or CCC) is make a clone of the Mac partition (or loose partitions at all). I have a BootCamp partition as well, which I would like to clone too, so what I'd want is a possibility to clone the whole drive, instead of independent partitions. It seems there is a terminal command able to do something like that, but I'm not familiar with using it.
    - I read about the software RAID solutions causing problems in Leopard (corruption of RAID headers). Does anyone know more about this, and whether it has been solved?
I'm sorry for putting three things together, but I thought it might make it easier to understand if the connection between the problems was clear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Piotr / iBear

Hmm.. This does explain a few things, especially the part about having X.5.2 as a minimum.. The slight problem with the the disk that was packaged with the machine is that my dad (for whom I'm setting it up) has been "cleaning up" his disks - I've had a hard time finding the Leopard disk for that matter... - and is now on a trip for the next two weeks. I'm now configuring a new external install - entirely fresh and updated to X.5.4 - to try booting from that.
I thought both AppleRAID and SoftRAID had that problem, that's what I understood from the post you left in another topic, but I guess I don't have to worry about that anymore. happy
The purchases have actually already been made, and as there were no 640G disks available, I had taken the 500G's. So, the machine is already set up with 3x500G (2xWD, 1xSeagate) and 1x1T (Seagate as well). As the original system is on one of the WD's, I wanted to create the RAID with two identical disks; will it make any difference if they are not? (I know it will work, but would it have any impact?)
And just a last small question: as I noticed before, CCC doesn't do entire drives. Should I partition the RAID drive like the original and then use CCC to copy the BootCamp partition? (found SD after a small search) > I think the same questions go for that as well...
Many thanks for the very fast reply!

  • System won't boot from Windiws XP boot disk after setting up RAID 0 array???

After connecting my two Western Digital Raptor on SATA ports 1 and 2, and finally being able to launch the Bios option ROM "Intel SATA Raid manager" (had some problems associated with an LSI 4i megaRAID adapter in a pci slot), I was able to put the two disks in RAID 0. After exiting the Raid manager, the DMI pool was updated, and I was expecting the computer to boot from the XP installation boot disk in the optical drive. Instead I got the message: "Disc boot failure. Insert system disc and press enter.". This is very strange, as I installed XP earlier with the Raptors functioning as IDE drives without a problem (so IDE was selected in the BIOS for SATA drives instad of SATA as in this case). As a result I am unable to install Windows XP (professional).
    My system configuration:
    Motherboard: Platinum power up edition
    Bios version: W72461MSv7.3
    CPU: Intel Core2Duo 6700
Memory: Corsair, 2 GB in matched pair DDR 2, now on 2 volts
Harddrives: 2 western digital raptors of 150 GB in RAID 0
Optical drives: LITE-ON DVD-rewriter and reader from same brand (also DVD)
    PSU: Corsair 620 Watt
Now removed: LSI Megaraid 4i adapter (pci) with 4 Samsung spinpoint harddrives of 4 in raid 5
    XP professional
Boot sequence: CDROM, floppy and harddisk in this order
    BIOS settings:
    USB keybooard and mouse disabled
JMB361 option rom disabled (not using it)
Onboard lan boot rom disabled (not using it)
    Sata mode set to RAID
All other settings "optimal" using F7 in BIOS
Usinf F11 during startup doesn't help: the CDROM is not displayed in SATA mode, only floppy and harddisk.
Using Microsoft XP professional boot floppy's did'nt help either. System restarted after loading first floppy (ther are 6 in total), and no result.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
