Updater won't run unless AdobeARM.exe is first manually stopped.

I'm still using Reader 9.4.1, which I recently reinstalled (after Reader X wouldn't open following initial installation) on Windows 2000 Professional, SP4.
Windows Task Manager always shows process AdobeARM.exe running after initial booting of computer.
In Reader, the "Check for Updates" function fails, yielding the message "Updater is already running".
Windows Task Manager shows an additional process AdobeARM.exe running for each attempt to check for updates. (AdobeARM.exe doesn't close automatically following an update or an update attempt.)
Only after closing all instances of AdobeARM.exe will the Updater run, and, unless AdobeARM.exe is once again manually closed with the Windows Task Manager, the Updater cannot be run a second time.

OK, I see.
I would like to help you and it will require a little more effort from you.
1. In the registry below set iLogLevel   DWORD value to 1.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe ARM\1.0\ARM
2. Restart the system
3. Open AdobeARM.log file and copy last section related to the last run of Updater, starting with
[Date\time] Adobe ARM 1.4.7.0 logging started.
E-mail it to me or post in the forum so I can investigate further.
Also, please provide a few more pieces of info
a. Are you logged as Administrator?
b. Is there Acrobat installed on the system? If yes, which version?
c. Did you change Updater preferences to disable automatic updates (I can actually get it from the log)?
d. Is there any other User looged into this system? If Yes, what kind of the User? Admin? Standard? Guest?

  • 10.4.10 update won´t run

I just installed a fresh copy of Tiger in my old G4 400mhz (AGP Graphics) after erasing the hard drive. But when i run the software update, i get an error and the 10.4.10 update won´t run. Even with the 10.4.10 standalone installer, the DMG won´t mount, i get an error and it all ends with a Kernel Panic.
I´ve tried everything i could remember, but no go. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

If you have any PCI cards, periphreals, 3rd party RAM modules, or anything else that was added to the computer that was not included straight from Apple, pull it. You may want to reseat your original RAM and AGP card as well. When troubleshooting, you want to make sure that all you have hooked up is the mouse, keyboard and monitor.
After you do a fresh install of the system, does it run fine? Make sure that directly after the install you repair permissions and repair the disk, and then restart. If you think it is running okay, then run software update- and only update the system to 10.4.11, don't install all of the other updates until after. If the system still doesn't upgrade correctly, then maybe you should just stick with plain 10.4. If it works well in 10.4, there may be no reason to upgrade.

  • Updates won't run

    Hi
For some reason Software Update won't run. I have also manually downloaded a few update packages (such as Quicktime 7.2, Combo Updater 10.4.10 v1.1 etc) and these won't run either. I already have updated to 10.4.10 via SW update a little while ago, but saw some advice about running the combo updater to fix 'prebindings' - thought this might fix the other problems, but it won't run anyway
I have corrected permissions booted off the installer dvd, but apart from that I'm not sure what to do next...
    Mike

    Please elaborate.
OK. Here is what I disagree with & why. I'm sorry that this requires such a long reply, but I feel strongly enough about the topic to air all my concerns, not just those that apply specifically to your recommendations.
First, I think "Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk" is misleading. Display sleep isn't a problem -- it is the Mac itself going to sleep (IOW, system sleep mode) during the update that Apple says should be avoided. I don't think Apple says anything about avoiding drive sleep -- since the drive only sleeps after a relatively long period of inactivity & installing updates by their nature is disk intensive, I can't see that as an issue either.
Likewise, Apple doesn't say to avoid delta updates in favor of Combo ones. It recommends applying a Combo update only as a troubleshooting/repair procedure for certain problems, not as a routine installation method. Since combos are generally much larger downloads, & not everyone has high speed access or ISP's that allow unlimited, continuous large downloads, implying that there is something wrong with using the deltas for routine updates is likely to result in some users becoming frustrated with the update process & maybe even give up on applying them.
I have similar concerns with the recommendation not to allow "SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically." I think it safe to say that this what the majority of users do, what Apple intends as the method of choice for non-technically adept users, & that it usually works perfectly well. IMO, this is because it is an automatic process, requiring no special knowledge of which updates to apply in what order, where they should be stored (e.g., not in /Library/Receipts), or even the fact that downloading isn't the same as installing.
I have mentioned elsewhere in this forum my objections to the logic behind avoiding automatic installs because the process is lengthy & "an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc." Since the install won't begin until the installer package is downloaded & its integrity is verified, the length of the process has nothing to do with it -- if it is interrupted such that the download won't pass the verification phase, the install will not begin & no havoc will ensue. If interrupted during the install phase it probably will, but the same is true for a manual install. Moreover, there is essentially no possibility that a cat or user will abort an automatic install at a critical phase, short of pulling the plug or shutting down the computer.
I believe the recommendation not to do anything else on the computer during the install is overly generalized. This recommendation (which I grant is a common one) seems to ignore that human users are not the only ones running processes during installs (or at any other time). Processes launched by root, wheel, & other non-human users continue to run, generally beyond the control of human users. Does it make sense that Apple would design the installer app to be safe to use when these fundamental processes are running but neglect to do so for higher level processes that depend on them? Such a broad recommendation might make sense for a cooperative multitasking OS like OS 9, which is what I think the logic behind this is often based on, but not for OS X.
Moreover, since an installer package may even replace OS components that the install process itself depends on, it should be fairly obvious that this doesn't occur on-the-fly but only after a restart (which is why it is required).
In general, I'm concerned not just about your recommended install ritual, but about all similarly elaborate ones that go beyond what Apple recommends. There are specific things mentioned in them that can on rare occasion lead to problems, but I think overall it does more harm than good to suggest that all users must take all these steps any time they install anything. There are two main reasons for this:
    1. Elaborate lists of steps like these rarely make it clear which steps are the really important ones or when they should be applied. It is all too easy for inexperienced users to get the impression that backups aren't necessary if you follow all the other steps, that backups are important only when doing an install, that it is OK to do an install if you follow all the steps even if your Mac has other unresolved problems, or even that the steps plus the install will cure them. It is a normal part of human nature to look for ways to rationalize avoiding tedious, unglamorous tasks like maintaining good backups, especially when it involves additional time & expense. Lists like these have to be very carefully written to avoid providing grounds for this sort of rationalization. With no offense meant to anyone, this is something amateur writers (myself included) generally do not have the skills to pull off.
    2. It is also a normal part of human nature to avoid things that cause fear & uncertainty. Convince users that all these steps are necessary to avoid disaster & some will just avoid applying updates altogether. (How many times in this forum is the phrase, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" used to justify not upgrading?)
For all these reasons, I believe the list should be shortened to the fundamentals: maintain good backups, fix any problems before applying updates, & avoid applying them if you are under a deadline.

  • Updates won't run in OS 10.3.9

At school we have many iMac G3s and iBook G3s that won't run updates. They all have Panther installed on them. We have tried several things, but it still doesn't work. Somebody please help.

    stupidipodnano:
If Kappy's method did not help, I suggest you download and install the updates manually. Here is a list of available updates for Panther. You might want to begin by re-installing the Panther 10.3.9 Combo Update, then see if Software Update finds anymore.
    Good luck.

  • MacBook won't run unless plugged in

My computer does not run unless it is connected to the power cord. If I unplug the power cord, the machine will shut off abruptly. The magsafe adapter is amber, which tells me it is charging. Although I don't think it is really charging anything. The coconutBattery application tells me it's been at 90% all day long.
So I tried to reset the SMC and PRAM… I may have done this too many times. Now whenever I turn on my machine, a couple weird things are happening:
    1) My Airport icon is "off" (even though it was "on" the last time I shut-down). I have to turn it on manually with each startup. It never did that before.
    2) My battery status is not showing up in the menu bar like before - even if I go to system prefs > energy saver > and click the little box "show battery status in the menu bar", it won't stay there… it just disappears really quick.
I'm wondering, is this a hardware issue? It appears my macbook can "see" the battery, as evidenced by coconut app and system profiler, although the battery does not supply power and won't charge.
Here's what my power info looks like in system profiler:

    Current charge: 3725 mAh

    Current capacity: 4121 mAh
    Design capacity: 4100 mAh

    Age of Mac: 25 months
    Battery loadcycles: 474
    Battery temp: 30.5C
    Batter power usage: Charging...

I took it to the genius bar at my local Apple store. The guy replaced my battery with one of theirs behind the desk. Still same problem - battery not charging. Unit immediately powers off when unplugged. He ran all these different tests: all passed. Tested from a known good OS from one of their firewire drives; still shows the battery as not charging.
Proposed resolution: replace the Battery connector. He says they can do that in the store for $50. If that doesn't work, they won't charge me anything, because they don't charge customers unless it fixes the problem. If replacing the battery connector doesn't work, then it's likely a logic board issue. He said they can send it in to Apple to have that replaced, but then I'm looking at $300 labor, plus the part.

  • Windows 7 64-bit update won't run after hard drive replacement HP G62-144DX

Replaced hard drive, ran recovery discs, everything OK except that windows 7 64-bit would not update. Services showed windows update to be running, but update gave error message: service not started. Reinstalled old hard drive which before all tests had showed drive to be defective and tried again, this time all ran Ok and windows update ran. This time all tests showed the orginal hard drive to be OK.

    Hello jzerener,
Is there a question in here somewhere?  I'm happy everything is working again, but I certainly can't explain why you encountered these results as you updated.

  • Flash Player Update won't run properly on my Windows Vista / IE 9

I am having problems with updating the Adobe Flash Player. The player is installed and recognizes that an update is available. I select to download and install the update and an internet explorer window opens and I am given the opportunity to click the "Download Now" button. However once i do the screen changes for a while to a progress bar titled "Step 1 of 3" and "Initializing" which then changes to "Step 2 of 3" that shows "If you encounter any issues downloading Adobe Flash Player, Click here." but never does anything else. When I take advantage of the 'click here' option or the "Need Help?" prompt in the upper right corner I get another screen overlay showing the following. The problem is I am not getting any of the prompts shown below. It is as if the download never started. And no the prompts shown below are not really apearing and just hiding behind another open window on my screen. It seems to me that the update and download functions are broken. The same thing happens if i go directly to the ADOBE site and try to initiate the install or updates directly from there. Can someone help with this?
    1.
When File Download dialog box appears, click Run.  Security scan will run automatically.
    2.
When User Account Control dialog box appears, click Yes.
Note : If you are still unable to download Adobe Flash Player, click the Back button on your browser. Then click Install/Download now and select the option to  Save and Run.

    Hi jwklingon,
Thanks for confirming the behaviour, much appreciated.  The online installer that you were using (aih in the file name) downloads the Flash Player installer silently in the background and installs it silently.  It appears that, for some reason, the download was not occurring.  The link Andy provided has the offline installers, which are the full installers and don't download anything in the background.  Those should work on your system.  If it doesn't, please provide a screenshot of the error the displays, if any.
    Thank you.

  • My iTunes won't run unless I disable Bonjour - will my iPod still sync?

Not sure if this is the right place to post - and completely non-IT-savvy so i'm pre-apologizing.
Recently had the common issue of my itunes not running once I updated to itunes 10. I disabled Bonjour as reccommended and now I can launch itunes. But I'm wondering if that will have any affect on how itunes runs and particuarly how iphones/ipods sync. Will I still be able to sync iproducts normally?
And if not, is there any other solution to the launching of iTunes problem?
My computer runs windows xp pro.
    Thanks

The only sign that its had any activity was last night when I tried to shut down my computer I got a "Not responding" window about itunes store...
Hmmm. with that one, perhaps try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(A LSP issue in theory could affect an iTunes launch via the Bonjour Service, although the symptom isn't mentioned in the document.)

  • Firefox software update won't run with parental controls

Running mac 0S X 7.5, firefox has recently been updated 27.0.1
I have parental controls in place on my child's account on the mac.
When that account is running and attempt to open firefox a dialog box appears saying the account does not have permission to run firefox software update.
Even if I (root/ parental user) choose the option in the dialog box to always allow access and properly enter my password, when I again click on firefox to launch I get the same message.

Note that the current Firefox release is Firefox 28.0
You can find the full version of the current Firefox 28.0 release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

If files to update Firefox have already been downloaded then you may have to remove them in the updated or updates folder in the Firefox application folder.

  • Acrobat Mandatory Updates won't run.

When I try to open Acrobat, it says that there is a mandatory update I need to run. Unable to run the update.  I also get a daily reminder that I need to update Air, but when I've clicked on it, I end up with numerous viruses when my Malware runs.  Is that a part of the hacking problem?

The mandatory update I recall is for something called acrobat.com. That's an obsolete app, uninstall it. Not the same as just Acrobat, and not the same as the acrobat.com web site (which is still there).

  • Batch won't run unless Illustrator CS3 is active window?

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this as it's driving me nuts. Basically I'm trying to batch an action I made in CS3 to run on about 700 illustrator files.
Everything runs just fine and dandy until I switch from Illustrator to another program (Firefox, photoshop, bridge, anything other than illustrator), once illustrator is no longer the active window, the batch process stops. When I make illustrator the active window again, the batch starts again. This worked perfect in CS2 and I never had this problem until CS3.
This is a huge pain as I can't work on anything else while keeping the batch running in the background.
    Here's the nitty gritty details:
XP SP2, Illustrator CS3, smoking fast machine
Action was created in actions palette to do the following:
Unlock All > Select All > Create Outlines > Convert to Grayscale
Ran the batch via the actions palette, choose "Save and Close" and "log errors to a file".
I've restarted Illustrator, restarted the machine, recreated the action, broke the folder into smaller folders with less files. It's making my Tuesday feel like a Monday.
I've search all over and found nothing. There was one post here on the adobe forums, but it was from October and it never got answered. If you have a solution you will be my hero!
    Thanks!

Yes, I have absolutely seen this! At our office we batch process Illustrator files to JPEG very frequently, and it's a huge nuisance to have Illustrator block the system during the batch processing. Everyone here is on XP SP2 as well, and we all have this issue. In fact, trying to switch in and out of Illustrator while it's batching can cause the application to crash fairly regularly for us.
I can confirm that the Mac version of Illustrator CS3 does *not* have this problem, as I am batch-exporting right now with Illustrator in the background on my Mac. (Mac OS X 10.5.2, Illy 13.0.2)
A fix for this would be most appreciated, Adobe!

  • 5.0.1 update won't run

Not sure if this is a computer problem or an update problem, but every time I click to update Firefox to 5.0.1, the box just stays on the "updating firefox" window. The blue and white "barber pole" keeps spinning, but nothing happens. We're talking a couple of hours here. I have mac OS 10.6.8.

    Niel:  Thanks.
For others benefit, here is what happened.
I had installed Logic Studio 9.1 some time ago.......not knowing what all the programs were nor what they did, I created a "Logic Studio" subfolder in my applications folder and put all Logic Studio programs into it so I'd know where they were and could review each at my leisure over time.
My assumption now is that when the updater looks for the Logic Pro program, it looks only in the applications folder.  It seems lame that it would not also look in the subfolders of the applications folder, but that apparently IS the way it works.  Because my Logic Pro program was located in the "Logic Studio" subfolder, the updater just didn't see it..hence the error message I received when I tried to update.
Solution:  I moved all the Logic Studio programs out of the subfolder and now they reside in the applications folder. Ran the 9.1.5 updater and it worked like a charm.
