Updating custom component properties

Hi all,
I have a custom textManager component which i use in flash 8.
This component has several parameters which are "inspectable" which
enables me to set the value of the parameters per instance inside
the flash parameters panel. I have now added a new value to one of
these parameters but have noticed that this new value isnt
available for the exisiting instances, only new instances dragged
into the stage have this new value in the drop down. How do i
update all the existing instances of this component so that i can
see this new value on their parameters list? Does this require a
JSFL solution, if so could someone give me some tip on where to
start as i have no knowledge of JSFL. Thanks in advance

  • Custom component  - how to store java Properties object in ucm environment

    Hi Experts,
    I am developing a custom component.
    my custom component code is reading a properties file and load in Properties object. Everytime this custom Service is called, properties file is read from file system and new Properties Object is created.
    Is there any way to load the Properties object once and store somewhere in UCM context ? (just like we do in JSP using application object"
    thanks!!
    Edited by: user4884609 on Jul 12, 2010 3:01 PM

    I'd say there are quite a few ways how to do it, but many of them have nothing in common with UCM.
    - I'd opt for the only "UCM" way I' aware of: as a part of custom component you can create your own properties file (it's also called environment variables) as a part of your custom component. You can, then, easily read (and write?) properties from/to the file.
    - The first option could have disadvantage, if there are too many properties. In this case you could use Java serialization - it should be UCM independent
    - Another option is to create your properties in the database - it is a bit similar to the first option, but it's more robust. Plus, you may use features of the database if you want to have some additional logic in you properties.
    - Note that you can also create a static object, which could be initialized e.g during class load

  • Custom component property value handling at run time

    I would like to develop simple custom component which has three properties PROP1, PROP2 & RESULT . These parameters are bound to excel sheet cells as follows..
    cell A1 connected to PROP1
    cell A2 connected to PROP2 and
    cell A3 connected to RESULT.
    In excel A1 cell has excel formula set as =IF(A2<5,10,0).
    Custom component would be simple button display at runtime and on click of the same, I would like to perform following actions in sequence with N number of times.
    1. First push any random number to PROP2. (which is simple task, I believe)
    2. Pick new value of PROP1 which is changed due to existance of excel formula (+ using dispatchevent I could able to pass value to excel cell A2. But not able to read new value of PROP1+)
    3. check new PROP1 value equal to 10. If it is 10 then count it otherwise again push new random value to PROP2.
    4. Continue step 1 to 3 till N number of times. and finally
    4. Push number of counts for PROP1 value 10 to RESULT parameter.
    All the parameters are bindable (getter/setter with [Bindable]) in Flex component application and flex propertysheet application use binding ID to bind with cell address. with binding direction BOTH and SINGLETON
    Here is flex function code which triggered at button click.
    public function test002():void {
    while ( N < 100)
      this.PROP2 = Math.round(Math.random()*1000);
      dispatchEvent(new PropertyChangeEvent(PropertyChangeEvent.PROPERTY_CHANGE, false, false, PropertyChangeEventKind.UPDATE, "PROP2", null, PROP2, this));
         if (this.PROP1 == 10)
          cnt++;
       this.RESULT = cnt;
    My observations are as follows.
    - new push of value to PROP2 get reflected to excel A2 when button click event is over, not at the time of while loop process execution.
    - Also I observed PROP1 value never changes and it is the value which is recorded just before button click event of component at run time and remain the same till button click event is over.
    - Further to this I notice as click event is over, new value of PROP2 reflected in cell A2 and change value (if it passes IF formula of excel ) in A1 as well. Next button click action takes these new A1 and A2 values in consideration and process the function "test002".
    I would like to understand possibility of custom component event execution process, which can able to pass as well as read value from component parameters to underlying excel with changes due to excel formula existance.  If it is not limitations (If so) what is the set of commands which can be helpful to achieve this. I appreciate if anybody explain typical event execution required in such scenarios with some actionscript code directions.
    Thanks

    Marton,
    I have tried your solution. It works well immediately after xcelsius dashboard get displayed or preview. It does not wait click event to happen. So I modified further by adding one switch ( "switch001" in code piece shown below) to control iteration by click event. That stops running of iteration immediate after dashboard display.
    In order to see iteration I have to click twice on button. First click does send "frm" parameter value to excel and excel formula operates. The excel formula result send back to component via SETTER of "frmResult" . But it stops over there. If I click second time the iteration starts for 100 times.
    Also I try to export this to PDF. PDF file get generated. If I try to open PDF file it raise error.
    My code is attached here.
    "frm" is the parameter that sends random number to excel.
    "frmResult" parameter receives excel formula output and send it back to component.
    "test()" function operate on button click event and set switch001 and then calls "Calc" function for iterations.
    MXML code..........
      <mx:VBox>
           <mx:TextInput id="frmResultLabel" width="100" />
           <mx:Button label="test..." click="test()"/>
      </mx:VBox>
    Actionscript code
    public var cnt:int;
              public var N:int = 0;
              public var sum:int = 0;
              public var switch001:Boolean = false;
             public function test():void {
                   N = 0;
                   sum = 0;
                   switch001 = true;
              public function Calc():void {
              if (switch001 == true)
                if (N < 100)
                    this.frm = Math.round(Math.random() * 1000);
                else if (N == 100)  // return the result
                     this.frmResult = sum;
                     // Label component use to display frm and frmResult values at runtime
                     frmResultLabel.text = sum.toString() + ">" + this.frm + ">" + this.frmResult;
                 N++;
              [Bindable]
              private var _frm:int;
              private var _frmChanged:Boolean = true;
              [Bindable]
              public function get frm():int
                   return _frm;
              public function set frm(value:int):void
                   //if (value == null)  value = 0;
                   if (_frm != value)
                        _frm = value;
                        _frmChanged = true;
                        invalidateProperties();
              override protected function commitProperties():void
                 super.commitProperties();
                 if (_frmResultChanged == true)
                        // start the cycle again by generating a new random number,
                        // or write out the result
                        Calc();

  • Can I define a constructor for a Custom Component?

    I have a custom component which I instantiate through ActionScript.  For the sake of clean code, I would like to be able to assign the variables through the constructor like any other class:
    var myComp:CustomComponent = new CustomComponent(arg1, arg2, ...);
    However, when I try to write a constructor in the Script block for the component, it gives me a compile error telling me that I have multiple constructors:
    //In Script tag//
    public function CustomeComponent(arg1, arg2 ...):void { ... }
    Are we not able to define constructors for Custom Components?

    If this post helps, please mark it as such.
    If you create an array variable in your MXML component, and then set it with myVar="[val1, val2, val3]" in the opening tag of your component, then you basically have a constructor in MXML.
    You can use the [Bindable] metadata tag in three places:
    Before a public class definition.
    The [Bindable] metadata tag makes usable as the source of a binding expression all public properties that you defined as variables, and all public properties that are defined by using both a setter and a getter method. In this case, [Bindable] takes no parameters, as the following example shows:
    [Bindable]
    public class TextAreaFontControl extends TextArea {}
    The Flex compiler automatically generates an event named propertyChange, of type PropertyChangeEvent, for all public properties so that the properties can be used as the source of a data binding expression.
    If the property value remains the same on a write, Flex does not dispatch the event or update the property, where not the same translates to the following test:
    (oldValue !== value)
    That means if a property contains a reference to an object, and that reference is modified to reference a different but equivalent object, the binding is triggered. If the property is not modified, but the object that it points to changes internally, the binding is not triggered.
    Note: When you use the [Bindable] metadata tag before a public class definition, it only applies to public properties; it does not apply to private or protected properties, or to properties defined in any other namespace. You must insert the [Bindable] metadata tag before a nonpublic property to make it usable as the source for a data binding expression.
    Before a public, protected, or private property defined as a variable to make that specific property support binding.
    The tag can have the following forms:
    [Bindable]
    public var foo:String;
    The Flex compiler automatically generates an event named propertyChange, of type PropertyChangeEvent, for the property. If the property value remains the same on a write, Flex does not dispatch the event or update the property.
    You can also specify the event name, as the following example shows:
    [Bindable(event="fooChanged")]
    public var foo:String;
    In this case, you are responsible for generating and dispatching the event, typically as part of some other method of your class. You can specify a [Bindable] tag that includes the event specification if you want to name the event, even when you already specified the [Bindable] tag at the class level.
    Before a public, protected, or private property defined by a getter or setter method.
    You must define both a setter and a getter method to use the [Bindable] tag with the property. If you define just a setter method, you create a write-only property that you cannot use as the source of a data-binding expression. If you define just a getter method, you create a read-only property that you can use as the source of a data-binding expression without inserting the [Bindable] metadata tag. This is similar to the way that you can use a variable, defined by using the const keyword, as the source for a data binding expression.
    The tag can have the following forms:
    As far as binding, you can add the [Bindable] tag before the class declaration to make bindable all public properties defined as variables, and all public properties defined by using both a setter and a getter method.

  • Creating a custom component is causing a strange scoping issue

    I am a fairly new user to Flash and Actionscript, but I have
    a fair amount of experience working with C and Java. I'm currently
    working with Actionscript 2 in Macromedia Studio 8. I was trying to
    create a new component for a project I am working on, and I
    followed the tutorial in the help and all testing works while I am
    in context of the flash document where I export the component from.
    However, I try testing my component in a new blank document and I
    get some strange behavior.
    I am able to create a component on the stage, and adjust the
    properties perfectly fine. However, when I test the file, the
    variables for colors go out of scope. That is, the adjustments I
    made to the component through the parameters panel, and saw updated
    on the stage aren't demonstrated at runtime. The Number variable I
    used however is preserved. I did some traces, and it appears that
    this is happening because at runtime in the new blank document, the
    variables in the onEnterFrame method go out of scope, where they
    weren't before.
    It seems really strange to me that I should be able to edit
    the color on stage but have it revert while it is running. My
    intuition says that if it wasn't going to work in the new document,
    that it shouldn't work in either case.
    Anyway, here is the code for the .as file, I hope I'm just
    doing something stupid.

    There seems to be a little confusion here. Think of it this way:
    A basic UIComponent by itself is not visible; you can add something you can see to it to make a visual custom component. For example, a ComboBox component is a UIComponent with a ComboBox added to it.
    The UIComponent is the lightest weight component available from which you can create other components. I use it as the base for custom components that the user cannot see, like a data manager.

    Carlos

  • How do you reference a valueObject located in main to a custom component created in Catalyst?

    Hello,
    I have been working with the Catalyst Beta 2 / Flash Builder beta trying to create a photogallery and have hit a little bit of a snag, try as I might I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I am still new to Flex so please excuse me if this is a basic question, I have been trying to understand more about Flex to make my designs in Catalyst better.
    I found this video on Adobe TV: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/rich-internet-applications-101/ria-stepbystep-16-binding-a-data- service-to-flash-builder-components/
    It's wonderful and I have the datalist I created in Catalyst working with the XML file I generated but I designed my little photogallery a bit diffrent, I created a Custom Component in Catalyst so that when you click an item on the DataList it pop's up a little screen with a larger photo in on it, rather then having an image in the main application. Now my problem seems to be that I can't refrence the valueObject I created with the wizard as it's in my Main.mxml file, is there a way to refrence it from my Custom Component so the larger image will display? Is there a way to let the component know which item on the dataList in the main application is selected and display the correct image?
    I should also say I really enjoy working with the Beta for both Flash Builder / Catalyst, thanks for the hard work!
    Thanks for the help,
    Chris

    I am afraid you cannot bind to static properties in Windows Store Apps. It is simply not supported.
    You could create a proxy class that exposes the static command property and bind to this property of an instance of the proxy object:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14186175/bind-to-a-static-field-in-windows-8-xaml
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4708711/how-can-i-use-the-xstatic-extension-for-phone7-silverlight-apps
    You will of course have to create an instance of the proxy object. There is no way around this.
    Please remember to mark helpful posts as answer to close your threads and then start a new thread if you have a new question.

  • Validation Error - JSF Custom Component

    I am trying to create a Custom Component. It is a pre-populated list of selection items. So all that the page author would have to do is use a tag like
    <jsfcust:mySelectOneComponent  value="#{requestScope.selectedItem}/>and this should display a drop-down list from which only one item can be selected. I got this working except for the final stretch.
    I created the following...
    1. tag in the .tld file
    2. CustSelectOneTag.java (set the value as a ValueBinding in setProperties() method)
    3. CustSelectComponent.java
    4. CustSelectRenderer.java (In the decode() method, called setSubmittedValue(value) on the component)
    5. updated the faces-config.xml file
    The display seems to be working fine. The problem is when I click on a Submit button and go to the next page where I want to display the selected value. It shows up as null. All that I want to do is be able to select an item from the custom drop down and display it in the next page after hitting submit.
    What is the proper way to send the value back in the response? In my case, I was merely trying to pass the value so that the next page can access it from the request scope and display it.
    I was not sure if I had to implement the getConvertedValue() method in my renderer. Can someone help?
    Thanks,
    JM

    Thanks for your reply! Your answer fixed my problems, so definitely thanks! I need to use escaped values for things like "<,&,#, etc", like the pound "amp" semicolon stuff. If I try to type out strings like these the forum unescapes them - fun part of posting forum questions about HTML escaping on HTML-based forums! :) I didn't realize an escaped querystring would still work as expected in a <a href ... />. You actually fixed both of my problems, and I... I do feel appropriately foolish now :) Had a feeling this might be a slaps forehead one. Thanks for the quick answer!,

  • How do I tie a custom-component to a class?

    In flash there's this great way of seperating code from
    content: In the properties menu of a movieclip in your library, you
    can assign a class name to the movie. So something I very regularly
    do is:
    class MyMovieClip extends MovieClip{
    //etc..
    so I'd have all the code that manages my movies nicely tucked
    away in some .as files, no code in the fla. That's the way I like
    it.
    So I was wondering if you can do a similar thing in Flex. I
    most definitely don't want the code for my application in the .mxml
    file, I actually want to inherit the Application class. Similarly,
    I'd like to inherit the Canvas class, yet have the nice gui for
    dragging all the visuall elements in place. Is there a way?
    Regard, and thanks in advance,
    Karel

    If you look in the library panel, there should be an entry for your custom component - probably something like CustomComponent1.mxml. Drag this out onto the artboard to create a new instance of the component.
    In the case of a custom component, you can't change much on the second instance. If you have something like a text input skin though, you can change the text it is displaying for each instance.
    We are working on making this sort of thing easier in the future, so stay tuned

  • How to use a flex custom component in an AS3 Class?

    Our software team has been developing flash applications using AS3 (via the FlashDevelop IDE and the free Flex SDK).  Recently, some members of the team started exploring FlexBuilder and Flex (wow... why did we wait so long?).  The problem is that some folks continue to develop using pure Action Script 3 (FlashDevelop) while others are creating custom components in FlexBuilder.
    How do the AS3 developers use the Flex Custom components built in FlexBuilder in their AS3 Applications?

    SwapnilVJ,
    Your suggestions enabled me to make progress, but I'm still having a problem.  Based on you suggestion, I learned how to make a swc using Flex Builder.  I successfully added the swc to the lib resource in my AS3 project (FlashDevelop).  I was able to instantiate one of my new components (code hinting even picked it up from the lib).
    When I run my app, my component is not visible.  I can trace properties of it and the values are correct.  Any thought why I might not be seeing my custom component?
    package trainer.games.board.MatchThree {
    import flash.display.Sprite;
    public class Test extends Sprite{
      private var cp:MatchingGameControlPanel; // <<< this is my swc custom component created in Flex
      public function Test() {
       cp = new MatchingGameControlPanel();
       cp.visible = true;
       addChild(cp);
       trace("width: ",cp.width); // <<< works and displays valid data for the component.

    hi Steve
    thank you for your answer. Unluckly i'm not using mysql but oracle 9i (or 10i i don't know since i'm just a poor programmer). Anyway i did a test : i've bypassed the datasource file , hardcoding the connection parameters in my custom component and it has got executed without problem, then process has crushed again on a query done by some adobe component. there are many adobe sql component instances to read/write from the same schema my compnent uses, so i suppose the problem is inside datasource configuration. There's a datasource sample for oracle too?
    I cannot give much details, since the new system has been recently installed and i don't know all info (i think jboss is 4.2 but i'm not sure)
    thanks again
    regards
    Stfano

  • A Custom Component and the JSP source that get's generated

    I'm writing a Custom Component library and I'm at a point where I need to understand how the JSP source that gets generate when my component is dragged from the palete is created and how it relates to the properties I define in the Metadata files.
    In particular I have a component that is an extension of the DataTable component and I'd like to control what get's dropped onto the page when the user drags over my component.

  • Custom Validator for a Custom Component

    I am having troubling passing values from my custom component
    to my custom validator (via a model). For some reason when the
    validate() function is called for the validator the value parameter
    passed to the validator is not showing the value from my custom
    component.
    I have attached some example code to illustrate.
    Here is my model:
    <mx:Model id="myModel">
    <root>
    <mod>
    <name>{myTextInput.text}</name>
    <date>{myDateField.selectedDate.getTime()}</date>
    <length>{myComp.getLength()}</length>
    </mod>
    </root>
    </mx:Model>
    When I update the value of myTextInput or myDateField the
    model (as sent to the validator) shows the correct value. When I
    change the value of myComp the change is not reflected.
    Is there a particular event (or something) being dispatched
    in the other components to cause the model to get the new value
    that I need to include in my custom component? I am pretty stuck
    and would appreciate any help.
    Many thanks

    Does myComp extend EventDispatcher (or any class which does)?
    You need to flag the getLength() function as bindable and to
    dispatch an event:
    [Bindable('getLengthChange")]
    public function getLength() : Number
    // does whatever it does
    When you update myComp have it dispatchEvent( new
    Event("getLengthChange") ) and I think it will work.

  • PPR on custom component

    I have a custom component for calendar. When invoking PPR on the component it refreshes the entire contents of the page and the custom component doesn't work properly after that.
    If I manually do full a page refresh then the component works properly.
    There is a thread with a similar problem was resolved Re: PPR on custom component?
    In above thread the solution was to add below in the custom component class.
    @Override
    protected FacesBean.Type getBeanType()
    return TYPE;
    I do have this code in my custom component class but may be I am missing something else. Does anyone have a suggestion of how to make this work? I'd appreciate your help a lot.

    Yes, I've seen that page on Trinidad. It was helpful, but it seems it was mostly about using PPR, not about building it into a custom component. The one part that did talk about custom components was this, near the end:
    "Finally, if you're implementing a custom component, you aren't extending the Trinidad UIXComponentBase base class or one of its subclasses, and you want to support partialTriggers, you'll need to use addPartialTriggerListeners(). If you deliver events, and you want to support being the target of partialTriggers, you'll need to use partialUpdateNotify(). "
    Then it gives code snippets for each of those. In my case, I am extending UIXComponentBase, and I am including this code, and I know addPartialTriggerListeners gets called, but my component still doesn't get the updated data. If I right-click the page and select Refresh, it redraws correctly, and other components that have partial-triggers on the same component I do, do get the update properly. So I must be missing something.
    Also, where can I get the open source of the components from? I haven't found anywhere to download them from. Can you point me at them?
