Updating iTunes version- lose files?

Honestly, I still have unresolved questions about iTunes losing files (exclamation point) for no apparent reason, so I'm hesitant to update to the new version of iTunes for Windows.
If I update, will I lose my playlists/rankings? Will iTunes "forget" where my files are (file path?)? Will I have to manually relocate my files on my external hard drive all over again, one by one?
Please help!

undies78,
There should not be an issue with updating to the latest version of iTunes for Windows. The update will carry over preferences and ratings that you had with the previous version.
You can get the latest version here:

  • When I update iTunes, it "loses" all my songs stored in a non-default location.  How to prevent?

I store my music library on an external hard drive.  Whenever I update iTunes, it "loses" all my songs.  When the iTunes library updates, all my tracks get little exclamation points next to them because they are not in the default (C:\my music\itunes music) location.  I have my ways of fixing this...but they are a pain.  Is there a way to have my music files not get lost when I update iTunes?
    Thanks,
    Brett

    Hi dklowther,
iCloud only houses access to Music purchased through iTunes. Any music you put on your iPhone from CDs or other sources would only be on your phone and in your iTunes library that you used to sync the songs to your iPhone. You need to move the contents of your iTunes library from your old computer to your new one....

    Hi,
Installed a new update iTunes Saturday - My file directory could not be found, so I reset the directory path, and 'it' asked me if I would like 'it' to re organise my filing, foolishly (as a beginner, without checking)  I selected yes - Many tunes have been duplicated, some have disappeared? Trawled through lots of misleading help files, mailed friends, tried many back routes into Apple web sites and they all wasted my time. Can anyone help?
I have discovered since then, that this resorce has been down over the weekend, which probably explains why I have had so many contradictory responses, so apologies if you all know what the prolem is.
My question is, my TIME MACHINE (which has not been used yet) was tried but looked nothing like that of the U Tube demo, so I am assuming that it needs setting up, however, it has been saving, I just do not know how to recover the data. Can anyone help?

(If you have a Time Machine backup, go to your User folder/Music/iTunes and select iTunes. Enter Time Machine and go to a backup of iTunes before the above happened. Then select 'Restore' on the bottom right.)
    Eric,
    Many thanks for your help.
Apologies for not being as skilled as you. I am unable to see what you are saying, can I ask, should I be in TIME MACHINE when I go to User folder/Music?iTunes or iTunes or Finder?

What kind of gobbledegook is that?  Are you or Microsoft crazy.  Us computer users need simpler instructions.  Or you need to write your programs so that they work.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • HT4623 how to update itunes version on iphone5?

I recently updated the OS in my iphone5 to 6.1.4.
So now when i tried to transfer music from my macbook pro to iphone5, it said iphone should have itunes version of 10.7.1 or higher for the sync.
When i tried to update itunes software, by checking if any software updates are available, there were none.
Also, when i tried to updated the itunes from apple website, i could not?

You can't update iTunes on your Phone separately to the iOs.  The iTunes its referring to, is the iTunes on your Mac, that's the one that needs to be itunes 10.7.1 or higher.
Go to itunes.apple.com to get the newest version.  However as was said you'll also need to update Mac's Operating system.

I update itunes to version 10.6.1 and when i use itune my computer run 100% of cpu all the time. When i uninstall apple mobile device support my computer's CPU run normally.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

  • Will Updating iTunes version delete my music?

I got an 80GB classic today, and found out I need to update my iTunes version in order for it to be compatible with the ipod. If I download the new iTunes version, will it remove all my music from my old version and replace it with the new version with no music? or will it simply update my old itunes version with all the music intact? Thanks

Updating should not affect your music, I have updated iTunes many times. Having said that, accidents can happen anytime you are installing something new on your system so it's always a good idea to make a back up your existing music.

  • Updated iTunes and now files missing

Upon being prompted I updated notice to the most current iTunes.
Went to listen to a particular song. Pop-up appeared saying something like "file not found".
Upon being prompted, I manually located the file. However, iTunes put a completely unrelated song (not the song I manually located nor even the correct musical group) in its place.
Meanwhile, a prompt also asked if I'd like iTunes to locate issing files. Clicked affirmatively & waited, then got a prompt that 107 files couldn't be located.
Deleting missing menu items and replacing accurate files is tedious to say the least.
Does anyone know of a good solution?

  • Can't synch iPod classic to iTunes after updating iTunes. a duplicate file name was specified.

I can't synch my iPod classic. "A duplicate file name was specified." I tried on two different computers on which it had previously worked fine.

Try deleting the iPod Photo Cache from the nominated folder that you have set up to sync photos to the devices.
See iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder for more info.

  • Ipad not recognized by itunes for mac, I've tried updating itunes version, restarting, and all that apple support suggests. no luck

I can't get my iPad 2 to show in iTunes in my iMac. I have the latest version of iTunes, I've tried restarting my Mac, shutting down iPad, connecting with different USB cables, everything, but so far no luck. Don't know what else to do.

I restarted "ipodservice.exe" from the Windows Services control panel. It's one of the suggestions from the Apple website. I didn't try installing iTunes from the installation cd, I just downloaded the latest version from the Apple website. Maybe I should try that.
I have a Dell Dimension 1.6GHz Pentium-4 running Windows 2000. I also tried it on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop running Windows XP Pro, but it still doesn't work. I don't think we have the same problem. It sounds like your problem is with your computer, not your iPod or iTunes.
