Updating JRE in Oracle 9i OLEDB installer

Oracle9i Release 2 Provider for OLE DB Version 9.2.0.4.0 (including ODAC) downloaded from
<http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/windows/ole_db/htdocs/utilsoft.htm>
seems to include JRE versions 1.1.1.1.0a and 1.1.8.16.0. But Sun has announced security issues affecting these JRE versions; see
<http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-57591-1&searchclause=%22category:security%22%20%22availability,%20security%22>
What is the recommended way to include a more recent, more secure JRE version when supplying the Oracle OLE DB provider to our end users for use with the Oracle 9i database?

Corrected URL: The Sun Java security alert is at

    I need to call Oracle OLEDB Provider "setup.exe" once I complete installing our product (using Installshield). I tried all different ways to do this and I have absolutely no luck.
    1. I tried calling LaunchaAppAndWait(SRCDIR^"disk1\\install\\win32\\setup.exe", "", WAIT) in OnFirstUIAfter event before SdFinishEx function and Installshield doesn't wait for Oracle Installer to finish its installation.
    2. I tried to get window handle for each window created during Oracle Installation and waiting, this somewhat makes Installshield to wait but hangs once Oracle completes its installation and sequence of windows displayed can change during Oracle Installation if user clicks on back button which will make Installshield to hang.

    There is an Instant Client page on OTN http://otn.oracle.com/tech/oci/instantclient/instantclient.html as well as an Instant Client forum (Products | Database | Instant Client) where you may want to post any followup questions. I know you can use ODBC with the Instant Client, so you could use the OLE DB to ODBC provider. My hunch is that you cannot use the Oracle OLE DB provider with the Instant Client, but you're probably better off posting that question to the Instant Client forum for a definitive answer. If you can use OLE DB, the Instant Client documentation needs to be updated to mention that.

    Do you want to create a response file for the Oracle Universal Installer? That would allow you to do a silent install of the OLE DB provider.
    If you go to http://tahiti.oracle.com and search for "response file", you'll get plenty of hits in the OUI documentation.

    Hello Vijay,
    I had a similar problem when I installed Oracle 8.1 years ago. I had to link to a existing JRE:
    cd /oracle/stage/817_32/Disk1/stage/Components/
    oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded
    mv linux linux.orig
    ln -s /usr/lib/jdk1.1.8 linux
    Hope it helps you.

    I have used the oracle's OSR installation guide. I beg to differ if OSR is really enterprise ready product.
    I dont think this is a specific problem with my installation. The point is that the installation logs is very poor to put it mildly.
    you get a sense that this product is developed by school student and is not an enterprise ready software.

  • Problem Oracle 10g database Installation on Windows 2003 Server

    Hi All,
    I am trying to face some problem to install oracle 10g database on windows 2003 server with service pack 2. Once I start to installation it give me an error "Error in writing to directory 'c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temp\orainstall2004xxx'. Please ensure that this directory is writable and has at least 45MB of disk space. Installation cannot continue"
    I double-insured that there is enough disk-space and I am also in the Administrators-Group.
    Please guide me for the above problem although I have done oracle 9i database installation with the same configuration.

  • Oracle 11g r2 installation problem on Win 7 prof. 32 bit

    I install on an IBM Thinkpad with 64 bit core2. The preinstalled OS is 32bit. After doubleclick on setup.exe I get a DOS Box for about 10 milliseconds. The time is to short to read the message or to press pause. After that nothing else happen. Do I need a special patch before installing?

    I tried it out yesterday the complete day.
    When I used the command line the same window poped up in the background. Running as Adminstrator also did not work.
    But today in the morning a new microsoft update was installed an now the installation worked :-)

  • Oracle 9i R2 Installation on RH Linux 7.3 -- Have a few questions.

    Hello,
    I am at the end of the Oracle 9i R2 installation and have a few questions.
    1) The "Agent Configuration Assistant" keeps failing. I get the following message.
    Parameters "orahome" = /opt/oracle/product/9.2.0
    Parameters "nodeinfo" = NODE_VALUE
    Agent Service Failed
    What does this mean and how can I complete Agent Configuration Assistant install?
    2) I completed the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant successfully and created passwords for sys and sysoper (not sure if these were the exact users). Note I did not modify any other users or unlock them.
    How do I log into the sqlplus prompt, what users should I use and how can I create new users and databases?
    Thanks for your help in advance.
    Regards,
    Chris Barone

    (1) You can probably just ignore the Agent Configuration (are you using the Agent to collect data?)
    (2) sqlplus '/ as sysdba' will log you into the SQL*Plus prompt.

  • Oracle 10g R2 installation on sun solaris 10 Sparc machine

    Hi there,
    I encountered the following problem during oracle 10g R2 installation on sun solaris 10 Sparc machine
    Error encountered:
    Using paramFile: /u01/Oracle/10gr2_db_sol/install/oraparam.ini

    >>> Could not execute auto check for display colors using command /usr/openwin/bin/xdpyinfo. Check if the DISPLAY variable is set.
    Some requirement checks failed. You must fulfill these requirements before
    continuing with the installation,at which time they will be rechecked.
    Continue? (y/n) [n]
    The following were the steps taken before encountering the above error
    1. logged into a workstation
    2. From its xterm terminal I logged to the oracle server via ssh oracle@ip
    3. keyed in the following at the command prompt
    DISPLAY=machine_name:0.0; export DISPLAY
    4. executed the following from the command prompt
    ./runInstaller
    Note: when executing the ./runInstaller, the preinstallation checking just hangs at Checking monitor: must be configured to display at least 256 colors. But the log file shows it failed during preinstallation checking as shown in Error encountered
    Please help me with this problem.
    Thank you
    Ravindran Kanniah

    It is because of UNIX shell. I also faced this error during installation.
    First check your shell by the following command.
    $ echo $SHELL
    Then select the below.
    For csh shell
    $ setenv DISPLAY 192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
    For sh,ksh and bash
    $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.128:0.0
    $ export DISPLAY
    After you do this check the value of DISPLAY variable.
    $ echo $DISPLAY
    If the DISPLAY variable is set then run ./runInstaller.
    One advice: Keep a complete log of your terminal session. This will help you in future :)

  • Difference in select for update of - in Oracle Database 10g and 11g

    Hi, I found out that Oracle Database 10g and 11g treat the following PL/SQL block differently (I am using scott schema for convenience):
    DECLARE
      v_ename bonus.ename%TYPE;
    BEGIN
      SELECT b.ename
        INTO v_ename
        FROM bonus b
        JOIN emp e ON b.ename = e.ename
        JOIN dept d ON d.deptno = e.deptno
       WHERE b.ename = 'Scott'
         FOR UPDATE OF b.ename;
    END;
    /While in 10g (10.2) this code ends successfully (well NO_DATA_FOUND exception is raised but that is expected), in 11g (11.2) it raises exception "column ambiguously defined". And that is definitely not expected. It seems like it does not take into account table alias because I found out that when I change the column in FOR UPDATE OF e.empno (also does not work) to e.mgr (which is unique) it starts working. So is this some error in 11g? Any thoughts?

    It seems that my question was answered here - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2736426/difference-in-select-for-update-of-in-oracle-database-10g-and-11g

    The behaviour seems like it really is a bug and can be avoided using non-ANSI syntax. (It makes me wonder why Oracle maintains two query languages while dumb me thinks that this is just a preprocessor matter and query engine could be the same).

  • Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM+RAC

    Gurus,
    Need some suggestuon on Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM and RAC option.
    We have found many documents on the Oracle, HP, HP-Oracle CTC and third party web sites, but nothing that is specific to this particular combination of separate
    ORACLE_HOMEs, ASM and 10g RAC CRS. It is unclear for me from the documentation how this combination of ASM and 10.2g RAC may best be installed.
    The high level steps i got after reading lot of docs as follows - but i am not sure whether these are correct or not. if they are correct, can any one share their experience/notes please?
    1) Install CRS
    2) Install RDBMS for ASM HOME - create separater oracle home for ASM instance using OUI
    3) Install RDBMS for RAC Database Home - create separater oracle home for RAC database using OUI
    4) Create ASM database using DBCA -
    5) Use dbca to create database.

    Oracle provides 'paint by numbers' tutorials called 'Oracle By Example'. (Go to OTN, check under the Training tab)
    They have one for a Windows based ASM/RAC that you might want to review. Not your specific environment, but the steps will be dag-nabbed close.
    I recommend walking the path (http://otn.oracle.com >> training:OBE >> Database 10g Release 1:VMWare:Installation
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe10gdb_vmware/install/racinstallwin2k/racinstallwin2k.htm
