Updating Links in a Linked Document

Good morning everyone.   I have a situation and not sure how to address.
I have about 100+ small documents (INDD files) that have a picture linked (different picture for each).  Let call these documents "listings"  I have recently dedicated a drive for these pictures so now all the path to all these "listings" documents are invalid.
These  "listings" documents are being assembled on a master page (for a real estate ad).
Is there an easy way to update the link for the "listings"?
thanks for reading and for any response.
Ren

If I understand correctly, you've linked pages from several .indd files into a new file, and the links in the linked .indd files are now out of date. The only way to fix that is to open those files, fix the links there and save.

  • Dreamweaver CS4 update links not working??

    Hello,
I have recently installed DW CS4 for our web designer. I have the update links preference set to prompt. When I moved pdf file to another folder it never asked me to update links. It only said am I sure I wanted to move the file. Should this work when moving a document file?
    Thanks,
    Tony

Yeah, I figured that. I'm trying to come up with the best way for users that uses Contribute. We have multiple folders with PDF's in them. It looks like Contribute only allows you to create one folder and use that folder. Unless you know of a good way Contribute can accomplish this? I would owe you

  • Links panel in InDesign CS6 isn't auto-sorting updated links

In previous versions of InDesign if you sorted the links panel by status it would automatically update the order of the links when their status changed. So when a link went from being missing to being re-linked, it would automatically change position in the list.
In CS6 I've been having the problem that links that need updating don't sort to the top of the list (or the bottom), instead they stay in alphabetical order even though the status column has been selected as the sorting technique. If I click the status column I can sort them manually, but then once they have been updated they stay where they are instead of dropping down with the rest of the up-to-date links.
Essentially the links panel only sorts if I do it manually. But continually manually sorting really isn't an option given the number of links I need to manage while under deadline. I work at a newspaper and have hundreds of links that are updated from various sources. I need to quickly see what has been updated at a glance.
I've checked through my preferences but can't find anything that may be causing this. Additionally I've recently upgraded to a new computer and operating system, but the sorting problem persists. (I've upgraded to a new iMac with the Maverick OS, 10.9.2) I had hoped that upgrading and reinstalling might fix the issue, but it hasn't.
Any suggestions? I'm really hoping it's just a preference I've overlooked.

inDesign links documents via a file path.
It doesn't actually add the image itself to the document, but rather relays a link to the where file resides on the hard drive.
It then draws a representation of that image in the layout using a proxy thumbnail.
So when it's linked it is actually looking at a file path, say something like
If I move that file to a computer where the my documents folder has a different name say "C:\MyDocuments\Eugene\Images\Eugene1.png"
    "C:\MyDocuments\Marcelo\"
Then when I open the file on Marcelo's computer the link would still be
    "C:\MyDocuments\Eugene\Images\Eugene1.png"
I need to redirect the link to go to
    "C:\MyDocuments\Marcelo\Images\Eugene1.png"
As stated above you should use
    File>Package
Zip the folders the computer generates - and then send them to a new computer.
Unzip and work on the file.

  • Indesign 5.5 crash issues when updating links

I am having crash issues when updating links and I don’t know how to trouble shoot the issues.
I have adobe creative suite 5.5 and I am using a third party plug in called wordsflow to allow updating of MS word documents without losing formatting in Indesign.
I have been in contact with the plug creator and they seem to think that the way the indesign importer is handling images is causing the problem.
I am not a particularly experienced Indesign user. How do I go about working out what the issue is?

At first it does appear that the plug in is the problem, however i suspect that the builders of the plugin are correct, in that it is the way in design in handling images in links.
the problem is worse when any image in anchored any where with in the document.
when the updating links screen pops up, the point where it freezes and then indesign crashes is infact on a linked image file consistantly.
broswing other indesign link issues it appears i am not the only person with image link problems.
My question is aside form turning off the plug in, what else can i do to search for the potential issue?

  • Always have to update links on server?

I posted this problem earlier, but am reposting in case someone else reads it at the top of the list, and may have a solution.
We are running CS4 on five workstations at the newspaper where I work. All computers running Leopard 10.5.
The indesign files are stored on a server running Panther 10.3.
If one of us saves an Indesign document to the Panther server, and then another person opens that file from another computer, they always have to update links.
This happens even if there were no changes made. I can open the file 3 times, and never have to update, and never have to resave, but when someone else opens it, they have to update and then save. Then if they open it again a few minutes later, they don't have to update again, but I (the original creator of the document) will have to update the links and save, if I open it after they have saved the file.
If I save an indesign file to my Leopard workstation and share the file from my workstation, and then when someone else opens the file across the local network, they don't have to update. (As long as they don't have an old copy of CS3 on their workstation). If they had both copies of CS3 and CS4 on their computer it seems to make them update the links.
Is this because of the Panther server or because the server no longer knows if the file is a CS3 file or CS4 file.
I selected an indesign file on the server and in the "GET INFO"  window selected " open with CS4" but that didn't seem to work.
Anybody have to always update the links from a Mac servers like I do?
If you don't have to update, can you tell me what version of Mac OS server you are running.
    thanks in advance

So you have different groups?  Ok, that's a decent possibility as a trigger here.
Use the Get Info item (control-click on the file in Finder and select Get Info) to check the protections and ownerships both before and after the changes to a problematic file are made, and check differences in ownership and access.  This information is listed as Sharing and Permissions in the Get Info display.
As for the file services protocol you're using, launch Server Admin > select the server > either or both AFP or SMB are probably active.  If you're accessing the share from Mac OS X boxes, either SMB or AFP could be in use.  With Microsoft Windows boxes, you'll likely be using SMB.  You can select the Share Points to see what's being offered by each.  To see what a client is using to access a particular share, launch Finder (on the client) and look in the left side display listing the file services available and control-click on the FIle Share you're looking at and see if it's listed as a Mac Server or a PC Server; as AFP or SMB.
    Finding the log files?
Server Admin > select the server > AFP > Logs
Server Admin > select the server > SMB > Logs
Or launch Console.app from the Utilities sub-folder of the Applications folder, and you'll have access to all of the logs, and the ability to do some exploring.
The Mac OS X Server manuals will also be good fodder for downloading and reading, either on your Mac or via an iPad and iBook; there's a wealth of information there.  You're headed for the deep end of server management here.  (And once you do get a better understanding of the pieces and get up to speed, then Terminal.app and command-line access can be easier and faster for this stuff.)
I'll leave setting up access control lists (ACLs) until you can determine whether the file ownership or the access settings are changing.

  • InDesign CS5 Crash On Updating Links (Windows 7)

Upon opening an InDesign CS5 file, if it finds updated links, it freezes before fully completing the updating process. I then have to force-close InDesign (using Ctrl-Alt-Del). When I then relaunch InDesign, the file opens with no problems and the links have been updated correctly. This happens every time there is any kind of updated link. Brand new document, created yesterday, from scratch, in CS5. Brand new installation of both Windows 7 (32-bit) and CS5 suite. Intel core duo, 2GB of RAM, 900GB of free disk space on a 1TB drive. Suggestions most welcome.

The good news is: as of today I have switched over to an "all PDF" workflow for all vector graphics that I bring into InDesign, for all current projects starting today. It was a bit of a pain to convert my entire 150-page document with 220 EPS links over to PDF, but now that it is done it is working very nicely and we are finally "up to date" after jettisoning the evidently dog-eared EPS format.
As you suggested, I am importing multi-page PDF, and then selecting the individual pages in the InDesign Import options.
The bad news is that the InDesign is *still* crashing when updating links (which are now to PDF files and no longer EPS). As before, this problem goes away if I set Display preferences for vector graphics to "Proxy" rather than "High Resolution." Because of various deadlines, and because this is not a fatal problem and has a workaround, I am going to ignore the issue for a while and try to get some actual work done.
Thank you however for the very helpful suggestions.

  • Update Link function throws an error in cs4!

    Hi,
Iam using the update() function in the Link class to update a dataLink in the document. But when I execute the update command, Indesign throws an
error "Error String : update" . Can any one tell me why this doesnt work?
    Example:
    function UpdateAllOutdatedLinks(){
       var myLinks = myDocument.links;
       for(var myCounter = myDocument.links.length-1; myCounter >= 0; myCounter--){
          var myLink = myDocument.links[myCounter];
          if (myLink.status == LinkStatus.linkOutOfDate){
             myLink.update();

    I use something like :myLink.relink(File(xxx));
    myLink.update();
and yet, I have to update manually the links in the UI.
I saw similar posts all around but none of the tricks I used from them produced any improvements.
    Any ideas ?
    next bug ?
the same problem is in VB6 - sometimes link is updated - sometimes not ... I'm not sure but running .Update after few seconds update link ...

  • Updating link or relinking images unexpectedly resize

My co-worker and I are experinceing the same problem in CS4 Indesign. For example, we have a document that uses a link (PDF, Tiff, eps) and produce a proof for our customer.  Then they will send us a replacement link that is exactly the same file type and dementions/res.  We update the link and it will scale down ruffly 2% - 5% in the frame unexpectedly.
This problem has now cost our company $15,000 in ruined projects.  My boss wants us to fix this problem but I think it's a bug because CS3 never had this problem. Finding a resized image in a 600 page document is a very long process and very costly if missed.
I found this thread that said CS2 had this same problem.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/330/330428.html
We are using the latest version of CS4 with all the updates, Dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5's with 3.5 GB Ram, running 10.4.11
    Can someone please help us.
    Thanks,
    Jay

hi. we've encountered this problem at our agency as well. Working on Macintosh, InDesign CS4 (6.0.4). Recently, we've been working on a large annual report project, one with 100 or so placed Illustrator charts/graphs (all EPS files). All of them placed into boxes with identical width/height (3.5" x 2.5"). All placed in said boxes at 100%. The individual Illustrator files themselves are all based on an original of similar dimensions.
As the project moved along we received occasional changes to wording or numeric values in many of the charts. Usually, it's simple enough to update the charts in Illustrator, update them in InDesign, and continue working on something else. What we found, however, was that the updated charts were resizing by small increments - 100% would suddenly become 100.0834759%, say. Very random and more than a little concerning when working with so many linked images, any of which cut have portions of type/numbers cut off or missing as a result of the resize.
It took me some time to find the right way to search to see if others had experienced this problem, but eventually I found this particular thread. I did follow the suggestion posted to turn off Indesign's preference to 'Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking'. I was actually able to recreate the problem - I tested a couple of versions of the same Illustrator graph (one saved as a CS4 EPS, one saved as CS3 EPS), placing each into a picture box in InDesign, altering them slightly, updating them... What i found was if the InDesign preference 'Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking' was turned on, updated links would scale randomly as mentioned above. Turn the preference off, and everything updated normally.
The project is nearly complete, and we've compensated for the weird issue by working with the file handling preference turned off. However, our InDesign files our now in the hands of the printer, and any additional changes to this annual report happen on THEIR end - as a result, we've had to be extra mindful and make sure we check and double check updated links when we receive proofs/files back from them. we've already noticed a couple of instances where the issue has happened in their file as well.
I have to admit that I am suprised that this issue hasn't affected more InDesign users. It was mentioned on this thread that there was a similar issue way back in InDesign CS2, so obviously we'll keep an on things and hope for a patch or the next update. If anyone else can offer more advice/input, that would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

  • Get Linked Document info into Purchase Order

    Hi,
There is a popup which comes up upon pressing the attachment key in ME21N. This is currently blank.
My requirement is to fill this popup with Linked Document Info from Material master into Purchase order at PO creation (ME21N).
The fields that I want are
    DRAW-DOKVR (Document Version) or DRAD-DOKVR
    DRAW-DOKNR (Document Number)
I found a BADI Document_main01 but how do I pass material number (EKPO-MATNR) to it as the OBJKEY in DRAD table.
Is there any other way to populate the document number and version which is stored in the material master.
    Appecriate your help !

    Hi Shyam,
    Thanks for your reply.
Could you please briefly explain your point.
I am stuck up at some point and unable to find exactly the place to insert the specified data in the BAPI.
Also note that I need to update data which I will take from Sales order in header text of PO. This data should automatically be picked up while Saving the PO.
Useful replies will be definitely rewarded.

    Daya.

  • Update links in file created based on the template page

    Hello everyone:
    a) I have problems when update links in files crated based on
    a template page.
I read Dreamwaver (DW) help menu. Seems to me Dreamwaver is

This means that you are entering the links manually, not
    using the Property
inspector and browsing to the target file. You should do it
    this way until
you understand how templates work. All links in a template
    file should
(usually) be one of three kinds -
    1. Document relative BASED ON THE TEMPLATE, e.g.,
    <a href="../whatever....
    2. Root relative, e.g.,
    <a href="/whatever....
    3. Absolute, e.g.,
    <a href=''
    http://www.example.com/whatever....
Anything else will always result in the Template folder being
    placed in the
path for the link when you create a child page.

    Yes, of course.

This could easily be one of your problems. Those menus are
    definitely
broken and should never be used.

  • Does update links automatically work when we copy and paste?

Hi all!! :) I've got a question after i've tried DW CS3 for
few days: I notice that when i cut and paste a web page from a
folder to another folder within a local site, the links
automatically update (after clicking to choose update when a prompt
box appears) but there is nothing happens when i try to copy and
paste. Does update links automatically mode works only when we cut
and paste or did i do something wrong? If its the second case, can
anyone tell me how to fix it? Thanx 4 reading my post ^_^!!

My suggestion is that it works that way because when you copy
and paste the original document still remains in the folder and
therefore Dreamweaver doesn't see it as a moved file.

  • Update Link

Mac OS X 10.5.2 & Adobe InDesign CS3 (and possibly InDesign Server)
Our InDesign documents have the linking to imported text turned on.
We are manually updating each InD file, when the external text is updated.
I'm not able to find any example code to run an Applescript to update the link, here's what I thought should work :
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    update link "Text.txt"
    end tell
Text.txt being the file name of the text in the same directory as the InD file and the name that appears in the Links Palate.
Once the script is working, I can set up the Applescript for the images and XML on the page in InD.
These scripts would also need to be updated for InDesign Server.
    Thanks in advance,
    Darrin.

    Thanks Shane.
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
    set PathToFile to "MacBook Pro:Users:darrin:Text.indd"
set user interaction level of script preferences to never interact
    open PathToFile
set user interaction level of script preferences to interact with all
    tell active document
    update link "Text.txt"
    end tell
    end tell
What better way to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon than 'learning' Applescript . . .

  • Using Word linked documents

I am using RH8 and want to create a new project for a team that wants to be able to update its material on a monthly basis. My thought is to create Word documents and link them into a RH project that would be mostly made up of these linked documents. There might be a few small document within the project that aren't going to be linked. I've been advised to keep the Word documents quite small so the first one I'm looking at is 17 pages in Word. My question: is there a better way to get what I want besides linking documents?

How did you convert these files?

  • Linking Documents to a local sharedrive

Is there a way to link library documents to a local share drive so that when an update is made to the document on SharePoint it updates and saves on the share drive.  My company is telling me that I need to do this since SharePoint isn't a validated
system.  I just want to try to see if there is another way other than saving a copy both places.

You can directly link to them with AvePoint's SharePoint connector.
    http://www.avepoint.com/products/sharepoint-infrastructure-management/sharepoint-file-share-integration/
There is no way to do this OOTB.

  • Display cross-references' linked documents filename in the xref panel

Our company creates technical manuals consisting of five chapters, all named the same, except with a different prefix. For example the "ABC Widget" manual has an introduction chapter named "ABC 1 - Introduction", a safety chapter named "ABC 2 - Safety", etc. Many times I re-use documents for creating subsequent manuals using the "Save As" command. So the "ABC 1 - Introduction" chapter would be saved as "EFG 1 - Introduction" for the "EFG Widget" book. For all the internal xrefs it saves a whole lot of time since all of the xrefs are preserved. But for cross-document references it creates a problem. For example, if the "ABC 1 - Introduction" chapter has a xref to "ABC 2 - Safety", when I save the Introduction chapter as "EFG 1 - Introduction" it will still retain the xref to "ABC 2 - Safety".
Right now, the only way to see if there are xrefs pointing to latent docs, is to check each one manually. If the xref panel displayed a column indicating the filename of the linked documents, I would be able to tell at a glance if that xref was pointing to the wrong document.
    Thank you.

    Hi Van,
I fear, I expressed myself not very clear. I try again.
We have DITA structured documents. However, lastest status often was saved in the FM document. The xml documents often are not representing the final status.
When I open the FM8 document in FM9 everything looks pretty good.
But: When I want to save the document as xml with FM9, I'm getting errors regarding the cross references.
The cross references which were created in FM8 - doesn't matter, if a valid xml document or a FM document - always look the same.
(BTW: I don't think that in structured documents cross references always refer to elemts with a unique ID.)
example from xml which was created with FM8:
    <xref href = "#id08B4A0R30E9" type = "fm:Chapter">"..."</xref>
the only difference in the FM document is that the element is called fm-xref there, as it's not an external url.
in FM9 those cross references are totally different.
example from xml which was created in FM9:
    <xref href = "#id08B4A0R30E9" class = "- topic/xref">"..."</xref>
When saving the FM documents with the cross references from the first example as xml in FM9 (we don't have FM8 anymore), I get an error that the attribute type is not defined.
When having a xml document that was last changed with FM8 and opening/ saving this with FM9, there is no error.
At the moment I do not know how to solve this issue.
And also I'm not sure weather the same problem might accour again with change from FM9 to FM10 or else.
It is a great effort to make new cross references just because we upgraded from FM8 to FM9. (And of course always at most inconvienent time.)
As we are thinking of upgrading to FM10, it would be good to know before, if there are any similar issues to expect.
Or if there is an fix for FM9 or FM10 to avoid this at all.
