Upgrade - Anxiety Attack

I bought Tiger to upgrade (I didn't realise that Leopard was round the corner, but I've got Tiger now so may as well use it). However, I am being a real wuss about loading it, because I am scared that I won't be able to find the Microsoft software I need to use (Word, Entourage etc), or the folders with all my files in, and I already have iTunes, iWeb and iPhoto with lots of content and don't want to lose those either, or find they are empty. Can anyone tell me what I will see when I first turn the Mac on when it's been Tiger-ed, and what I need to do to make sure I can still get access to the things I need?

Hi and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Before you begin always have a backup. If you cannot backup or preferably, clone your entire hard drive to another HDD, then at least backup your Home folder to external media. Of course, the data is stored in your Home folder.
If your system is running well and you have no problems choose the simple "Upgrade install". Everything will be preserved. If you are having issues choose "archive & install."
All your MS Office software will be preserved in an Upgrade Install. In an Archive & Install, you may need to re-install Office but it should be archived in "Previous System" and you can just drag it out.
EDIT: Same goes for iLife apps. But all your iLife apps are either on your iLife install Disk, or on bundled applications on the disks that shipped with your Mac.
Also, don't forget to Repair Permissions and Verify Disk from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility after Upgrade.
EDIT: You will also want run 10.4.10 Combo Updater PPC to get right up to date.
AFA what you will see, it will look your old system at first glance except for a few details like the Spotlight icon on the Menu Bar and the Dashboard icon on the Dock.
Enjoy your new system

  • MacPro coming sooner than I expected!!! Pre-ownership anxiety attack...

Much to my surprise my MacPro 3Ghz/4G/X1900 is coming a week earlier than I had anticipated...
I thought I'd have the time to do some research, but the Apple gods have a different fate in store.
It's going to be used for really heavy Photoshop work, I intend to do fresh installs of many of my photo-related apps (there are at least five off the top of my head.)
BEFORE the discs start spinning though, what's the best way to set the table? In other words, should I be running diagnostics, installing utilities, etc...Also, with the 20+ or so apps and periph drivers I have to install is there any best SEQUENCE to do it in that would minimize any system errors or reduce headaches in general?
It's been five years since my new Mac and I have not been keeping as up to date on the latest Apple hardware/OS X quirks as much as I'd like.
I'm excited and terrified at the prospects of moving on to the next generation...

    I know I love
Mac Pro and I do a lot of video work with FCP,
Aperture and probably another 100 apps or so. I did
not reformat when my Mac Pro arrived, in fact, I was
using an Intel iMac and transferred everything over
via firewire. My Mac Pro has never missed a beat.
You will need ample RAM and lotsa hard disk space.
You can buy the additional RAM at Crucial.
BTW guys, I just sold my fully loaded Dual Core
BlackBook on eBay for just $300 less then what I
originally paid for it then turned right around and
bought the newly released fully loaded Core 2 Duo
BlackBook along with 3Gig or RAM from OWC. Yeah, you
can beef the MacBook up to 3Gig! All for less than
what I originally paid for that DC BlackBook. My old
DC BlackBook turned a year old last month so the $300
loss is considered a cheap year's rental fee!
I love Apple hardware. Nobody does it better. And
next month I get the iPhone! WaaaHOOO!
    Tim...
    3Ghz Mac Pro
    w/8GRam, 3TerabytesHD, 2 SupDrives; 13" BlackBook;
    80Gig Vid-iPod Mac OS X (10.4.9) 30"
Cinema, HPColorLJ Printer, LaCie 600Gig External &
    LaCie DVDRW/CDRW Drives
I prefer to get my ram from OWC personally. I think I may get an iPhone too.

  • Airport issues after upgrading I-Tunes

    Hi!
My parents have a connection problem after upgrading I-tunes to 8.1.1.
    Environment:
One Mac-Mini and one Airport Extreme on same desk 5 foot apart, wireless connection.
One Macbook, usually in another room, wireless connection.
For the past 2 years, not one problem, if both computers are on the same desk, within feet of the Airport Extreme.
Music shared from Macbook to Mac-Mini, no past problems.
2 weeks ago my mother upgrade her I-tunes and my fathers Mac-Mini struggled to share her library. It would "stutter" between tracks and also during songs. Shortly after this, I wanted to speak to my father over I-chat as he doesn't have a webcam, as my mother walked her computer into his room, the connection was lost, hearing some sort of interference just prior from my end.
Since then, we have found out that as soon as there is a clear, direct path between the Airport Extreme and her Macbook, the connection is lost. We have tested this with the Mac-Mini turned off, and have even turned the base station of the cordless phone just to be safe but the same result.
The Airport indicator states that there is a connection even though that there is no internet connection. We have updated both computers to the latest firmware and software updates, the system is OSX tiger.
This sounds crazy, but the only thing that has changed is that I-Tunes was upgraded. Can anybody help me understand this before I get my mother (who has anxiety attacks if she as soon as she needs to do something tech) to setup the Airport Extreme once more from Scratch?
    Thanks for reading

  • Upgrade strategy advice sought for Leopard/BootCamp/Parallels

Hello. I have dragged my feel long enough with respect to upgrading from 10.4.11 to Leopard (I bought OS 10.5 when it was first released, but upgrade anxiety prevented me from impulsive early adopter installation).
I would appreciate advice from those with more experience than I about the best method of upgrading, keeping the following goals in mind.
    First, my existing configuration is:
    (1) Mac OS X 10.4.11 on internal GUID partitioned 500GB drive, with identical drive as clone via SuperDuper (160GB used)
    (2) Parallels Desktop 2.5 Build 3214.0 (Windows XP SP2) is installed with an expanding drive option; the image, is winxp.hdd, located in ~/Library/Parallels/winxp/winxp.hdd. Currently 12GB.
    (3) never used Boot Camp before, and don't have a partition for it
    (4) separate 500GB drive for audio/music
    (5) separate 500GB drive for video/movies
    Goals:
    (1) Upgrade to Leopard, with ability to keep my settings, apps, tweaks, prefs, network config, bookmarks, etc. as best as possible without compromising the integrity of the new install
    (2) Create a Boot Camp partition on the main drive (about 120GB or so should be enough)
    (3) Upgrade from Parallels 2.5 to Parallels 3.0 (I will buy the software)
    (4) Migrate my existing Parallels 2.5 Windows XP drive image to the Boot Camp partition, so I can access it either from Boot Camp (natively) or from Parallels (virtual machine)
    (5) Configure clone backups for Mac using SuperDuper (for which I already have a license - for years) and for Windows using Winclone (never tried it) on my current backup 500GB drive
    (6) Configure Time Machine to an external FW800 drive for my Mac partition
I imagine this can be done, but I don't want to screw up on the order of the steps. Advice from anyone having experience with a similar upgrade would be graciously appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Stu

    Thanks again for your input.
The reason I want Boot Camp is in case I want to boot natively into Windows to take advantage of the performance boost. I would use Parallels when I want to use Windows for some quick operations while running OS X. From what I understand, using both Boot Camp and Windows on the same machine doesn't require any additional disk space. I think Parallels can run from an existing Boot Camp partition. That way, for example, you can use Windows from Boot Camp, create a document, and at another time, use Parallels, which will "see" the document created under Boot Camp, and vice versa.
The order in which I upgrade is probably important. For example, I have read that one can partition a disk on the fly under Leopard, but not under TIger. So, I guess I would upgrade from Tiger to Leopard (probably use Archive and Install), then partition my drive to create a Boot Camp partition, then upgrade Parallels from 2.5 to 3, and then somehow move my Parallels data to the Boot Camp partition.
Assuming I get this far, I would then set up backups using SuperDuper for the Mac OS X partition and Winclone for the PC/Boot Camp partition.
This seems like the logical order for these steps, but I imagine it will require more research on my part before taking these steps. I was hoping to get some insights from someone who has already ventured down this path.
    Thank you.

  • Where is the iOS 5 upgrade? (Oct 12th)

ok so I'm relatively new to the apple device world-- and I love my ipad 2-- but I was told the iOS 5 upgrade would be available today via iTunes.  I updated to iTunes 10.5 already but the only upgrade I got this morning was 4.3.5, which is definitely not iOS 5.
So what is the trick???  I check for the upgrade a few times but it says it's completely up-to-date.  Is Apple upgrading devices in a phased approach, making my update not yet available, or is Apple just overwhelmed with the update?  Was hoping to have my new iOS before I trudged out the door
    Thanks for the help!

  • Print Cartridge Problem: Tricolor - HP Officejet J4680 All In One

I am seriously going to have an anxiety attack. I run a business from home & I HAVE to have a printer. I just spent $50 on new ink cartridges. My printer was working fine for the last week, and then tonight I have this error message:
Print cartridge problem: [Tri Color] . Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot
SO I reset the printer, shut it on and off, cleaned the cartridge and the printer, switched out the new cartridge with the old one ~ same problem. Over and over.
I called HP and they said that since my printer is out of warranty they can't help me unless I purchase a new warranty plan. What horrible customer service. This printer is a product of HP and I should be able to get help regardless of when the warranty expired.
This is so frustrating. If I can't get help, I think I would rather buy a new printer of a different brand instead of paying for a warranty after I just spent 50 bucks on ink. GRRR!

  • I can't Import Video, Transitions & Audio From One Project To Another

I've been working on this video all day and I’m finally in the home stretch but I've encountered my biggest problem yet. This is what I want to do. I have a series of clips, transitions, and separate music track in 1 open project and I want to transfer the whole kit and caboodle to another open project. For some reason when I do it only imports the video and some audio that's in track 1. I have tried locking audio clips to the video but it doesn't seem to be working. Can anyone help me!? I'm bleary eyed already I've been at this so long. Thanks!

catspaw: Thanks for replying!!! I think I was unclear as to what my problem was. The way I work is to have one Master project open and I then import various clips from other secondary projects as I build my movie. I know . . . this might seem nutty it’s just how I work. The clips, sound and transition were from a separate project but they were only part of the main movie I was building in my Master Project. Am I making any since? Anyway, I couldn’t take it any more so I rolled up my sleeves and went 1 by 1 through the audio clips and lined them up by hand with the imported video. I know this must be almost INPOSSIBLE to understand the way I’m explaining it, sorry! Basically, though, for now, I’ve solved the problem. Thanks so much! I’ll post again when I have my next iMovie anxiety attack.

  • Welcome to BT

Good afternnon everybody. My nbame is Msrtin and if you havent already guessed from the screen name i live in Norfolk.
Ive decided to join the forums and take the proverbial pen to paper to tell you all a story. A story about an average family living in the countryside trying to have a phone line and internet line installed. Can you guess who by?
In early Decemeber my partner, her mother and father and I all decided to move into a property together, a famr house in Norfolk. We called BT and asked them to move the line from my mother in laws house to the new address. Owing to the festive period there was a delay and the installation date was set to the 12th Janaury. We accepted this and as we were only due to move on the 9th saw it as good timing.
Further to this we also paid BT to place a trasnfer from our mother in laws old number to the new number at the farmhouse as my faterh in law runs a heating company from home. So all was in place, but this was the beginning of a 5 MONTH saga that is still on going to this day.
The 12th January arrived, we were expecting an engineer to turn up, and instead our new neighbour from across the field knocked on the door. She was very angry with us. It turned out that a BT engineer had just disconnected her operational farms business line, her personal line and her internet connection and installed our phone line and internet connection. She had been receiving phone calls for a heting engineer all day, not the best of starts BT!
Once we had demonstrated (by showing her the welcome letters sent to the correct address) that this wasnt our fault and that we had ordered the connection at the correct address, we turned to BT. An easy task you would imagine, im sure they will sort the problem promptly you would imagine? No. It took BT a month for her to be connected again as the engineers were apparently all booked up and there was nothing anyone could do about it? Booked up for a whole month and unwilling to help despite that fact that you have made the mistake and caused carnage?!
In that time she gave up answering her phone to our business clients and the realtionship we now have with her is frosty at best.
To compound this case even further over the following weeks we were bombarded with calls from the BT fianncial division, can you imagine what for? According to them as we now had an operational phone ine we needed to start paying for it. A phone line that was installed to the wrong address that we didnt have the benefit of. A Fact that the debt collectors seemed to eitehr not udnerstand or simply ignored. They called so often that my mother in law became quite distressed about the calls and the situation, to the point that she was having mini anxiety attacks everytime the phone rang as she seemed unable to get the point accross that this was not her fault and that she was unwilling to pay for a service that she did not have. Finally I could take the situation no more and I answered the phone. I ws not offensive as i do not beleive in such behaviour but i was able to get the point accross and finally the phone calls stopped.
Duing this time we were pursuing our own connection. Week after week we were promised engineer visits and week after week they failed to show up. We began to refer to the engineers as unicorns on account of their mythical relevance. Eventually we got on the phone and made a complaint, a unicorn then tunred up at the door some 3 days later. After a period of investigation the engineer concluded that the line meant for this property had been used to connect another house and there was no room in the box for our house? The engineer stated that as a result some serious civil engineering would be required and this would take a bit of time. finally we had some answers. Over the next 3 weeks BT kept us up to date with the progress of the installation, we could also see the roadworks and angineers coming and going on a daily basis and so beleived that all was in hand. After 3 weeks, communication from the communication company stopped. We received nothing at all. A further 2 weeks passed before we got on the phone and chased the connection. An appointment was made, this was one of a current total of 14 failed engineer visits that were to follow. Consistently no one turned up, then one day a miracle, our phone rang, and a voice told us that our connection had been made and we had a phone line. Shortly afterwards the magic Blue light appeared on our wireless box and hazaaa we were connected to the internet, back in the modern world and we set about contacting business clients for both my father in law and partenrs business giving them the number.
This bliss lasted 5 dayswhen we were called by BT and a very cnfused operator asked to speak to a Mr Jones. thinking that it was a simplemistake I stated that there was no Mr Jones at this address and as this was a new number she must have mis dialled. The response i received raised my blood pressure to or about the point it was at some weeks prior. It turned out that somehow BT had managed to connect a line to our house that was meant for an address on Oak street in Norwich, a Mr Jones. Now when you consider that Oak street is about 30 miles from us and we live in 2 seperate dialing code areas the mind boggles at how this can be achieved? A day later a call was received (ironically) stating that our ine was ot meant for us and that we would be disconnected again. when challenged as to the status of our connection , the operator was at a loss to explain and frankly didt soud bothered. So here we go again, contnued calls to BT from mobiles (costing a small fortune), bounced from India to Glasgow and back to India again whilst we chase for the status of our connection.
So we move to April. After 3 weeks of not chasing BT becasue we are all frankly exhausted speaking to operators that couldnt care less, we call BT and ask what is going on. The answer is reassuring. Thomas in Glasgow has spoken to the engineers and apparently all work to install a line to the house was completed on the 9th April (despite us having a previous connection but we will ignore that for the moment) and all that the line needs is an engineer to come and activate it. An appointment is booked for today!
The engineer tunrs up at our address. Goes to look at the line. Returns to the house. " im unable to install the line as engineering work needs to be carried our which will require road works" and we are straight back to square one, the exact same place we were at towards the end of Janaury.
So now im bored. Im bored of BT, im bored of their customer service. Im bored of being lied to. Im bored of being promised work and wasting my time to be here for engineers only for them not to bother. I fail to see how a communication company can be so bad at communicating. So now I will take a new approach. I have Libby Barrs linked in profile. Im hunign for her email address. I will now turn to every media outlet, every social media platform, every organsiation that will listento get my point accross that this is unacceptable and et something done about it. I will now dedicate my time to getting this case heard by someone that might actually care that there has been a catastrohpic failure here and no one seems to be accepting responsibility for it. I will now dedicate my time to getting some sort of compensation for the thousands this family have lost through our businesses becasue of BTs failed promises.
It is worth noting thatI do not have the option of using other providers. Being rural unfortunetly its BT or nothing, although BT are providing nothing at present. It is also worth noting that BT have been awarded grants for the "Better broadband for Norfolk" campaign to imrpve rural connections and speeds. I fail t see how they will acheive this for an entire county when they are unable to do it for a singualr house.
In conclusion, 5 months have passed, still no connection. Loss of trade to 2 businesses to the tune of £1000s. Fourteen failed engineer visits. Consistent lies from customer service team members, a small fortune in mobile phone calls to 0845 and 0800 numbers. A Mature lady briught to her knees by harassing phne calls about a service she has not received and a communal relationship in tatters due to the impact on her business.
So far not even an apology from BT.
    Im coming for you.

Yes it will work just fine. I sell and set them up quite a bit with both PC's and Macs.
All N routers at the moment are all based on draft N protocol, even Apple's own Airport routers. So the Belkin N+ will work at N speeds if you set it to N mode only. Ofcourse for broad compatibility with all sorts of WiFi devices it is best to leave it in mixed mode.
For some background, i have used all sorts of makes of routers from Compaq/TrendNet (favourite)/Microsoft/Netgear (current favourite)/Dlink...and so on over the years, NOT any issues.
Apple's Airport extreme base stations (which are still draft N) aren't any more compatible than a Netgear or Belkin N router.

  • Display Too Large

Hi, i just got new 3GS phone. During exploring the phone, i have accidentally made the display large. Problem is i don't know how to go about to reduce back the normal display. Please advise. Thank you.

Not sure if it had to do with a recent sync. But, "freaked out" can't come close to the panic mode that I was in. Like others, I had just completed a sync, when BAM! This forum has saved me lots of money on medical costs from anxiety attacks. Thanks TEAM for talking me down from the roof! Amini

  • Cs6 Beta Uncontrolled Cursor

After I installed the Photoshop CS6 Beta the cursor on my Mac Book Pro went crazy and was uncontrollable.  I uninstalled cs6 and now my computer is fine.  Did anyone else have that problem?  I would like to use the cs6 but I hesitate to install it again.

    Thanks for your help Pete.
I uninstalled CS6 and rebooted and my Touchpad worked fine.  I re-installed CS6 and rebooted and my Touchpad cursor went crazy again.  It was jumping around, opening files, and uncontrollable.  I managed to uninstall CS6 again, rebooted, and my cursor was fine.
I started thinking that I must have another program that is not compatible with CS6/Mac.  I opened "About this Mac", opened More Information, clicked on Applications and saw that there were installed programs that were not compatible with my OS X.  I trashed all those programs, ran Clean My Mac, and rebooted.
I re-installed CS6 and now it is working fine.
What an experience!  Having a uncontrollable mouse/cursor can put you into an anxiety attack! LOL
I hope no one else experiences this but if they do maybe this will help!
    Thanks again!

  • Parental controls a disaster under Lion

Since installing Lion, my son's managed account has been a disaster.  I use Parental Controls to automatically filter web content.  This has always worked well in the past.  When he encountered a site that was questionable, Snow Leopard asked for my credentials to add it to the approved white list.  This includes all secured (https://) web sites, which Parental Controls consistently and intentionally blocks, because the browser/OS can't appropriately filter for content on secured connections.
In the modern age of web browsing, however, hundred of companies attempt to install cookies, use invisible images (or other "bugs") or otherwise track Internet usage to sell to marketers.  Many of these cookies and bugs make secured (https://) calls to their host domains, either to secure the user's personal data they are transmiting (probably their story) or to hide the information they are transmiting so we users won't know what they are tracking about us (probably the reality).
Either way, every time my son visits a web page from any even remotely popular site, a dialog box with a laundry list of of secured domains he has (in Safari's words) "attempted to access" appears.  Dismissing the box is not helpful.  Another appears every time he moves to another page.  It is an incredible annoyance for both him and me.
I've blocked cookies from most sites in the Safari preferences.  I've installed the Ghostery extension to block most of the "secret" marketing related traffic affiliated with most web pages.  (I swear, if most people saw how many third-party companies track their private Internet browsing, they'd probably suffer anxiety attacks and never use the Internet again.)  The problem seems a little better, but still isn't totally gone.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I to have issues with "Parental Controls", it seemed fine with Lion and even 10.8 but now on 10.8.2 skype sems the worst culprit (perhaps it the softy roots) it keeps posting the same requests tht is one for msnmessenger.msn.akadns.net and the other the other is for Skype itself even when I grant permission the same requests keep coming up it interferes with web browsing since when the requests appear they demand action over everything else.
My son is just 14 and he has reached the age where it is vital that there are limitations on his use . The biggest neede for control over a` Spanish social site Tuenti which he received **** from a so called friend which rekindled the need for control and particular to block this site.
Has anyone found a solution to this loop of permissions in the past I set it added approved sites probable about 20 of them then forgot about it .
I switched the controls off yesterday to see if it would reset and cure the situation no improvement plus my son erased his browsing history so it is obvios I need to keep the controls in place.
The only other thought will be to use Little Snitch to control the computer.
    Any thoughts anyone!

  • Aperture Printing Fun and Games (aka trial and error)

    Hi,
After getting over the anxiety attack caused by the bad 2.2 raw update, I finally got around to playing with Aperture trial. Nice interface, liked the keywording and so on, so decided to see how the printing went - and that's when the fun started.
Printer: HP Photosmart 8230 with up-to-date drivers
Camera: Nikon D40, shooting RAW (NEF files)
Test Print 1 - iPhoto as a control example - lovely - came out very close to on-screen (correct paper and color managed as colorsync/RGB chosen in printer dialog),
Test Print 2 - ViewNX as a control example - produced stunningly sharp photo very close to on-screen using the same printer settings as iPhoto
Test Print 3 - Aperture print options set up as per Apple Article 302821, printed on same paper as previous tests, comes out slightly dark, with faint yellowish cast.
Test Print 4 - changed colorsync profile from the specific HP paper to "System Managed" and set color at printer to Colorsmart/RGB. Totally sucked - very dark.
Test Print 5 - retained colorsync profile as system managed, changed printer color to "Application Managed colors" Totally sucked exactly the same as Test 4.
Test Print 6 - Lightroom 2 print using "managed by printer" profile - very nice print and close to on-screen
Test Print 7 - Lightroom 2 print using specific paper profile - identical to Test 6
To summarise - printing from Aperture does not produce as close a match to on-screen as iPhoto or ViewNX or Lightroom 2, even though the reverse should be true. If I want Aperture to print something like what I'm seeing, I have to up the gamma, increase saturation and contrast, and also increase print sharpening, which kinda defeats the point of having a big screen and lots of adjustment options.
Any suggestions on what to do next would be most appreciated.
    Regards,
    Calx

I admit it is very frustrating at first but woorth pursuing. There are many threads on here about this and many including myself have solved the problem. One thing I notice is that you are using System Managed. This is not the way to do it. Another thing is that you continually have to check Colorsync.
The set up dialgue could be more intuitive but if you follow it carefulyl it does work. I woudl expect that this will be improved at some stage. Remember too in doing this you are being given flexibility; flexibility to make superb prints and the converse - flexibility to fail. On teh way to gettin my 'ooh - ahh' prints I have my share of disasters. This is not a click and go instant gratification game.
    good luck.
