Upgrade Puzzle

I'm getting ready to upgrade my entire system from a souped-up G4 with CS Premium (Yes, that's CS, and I'll freely admit I'm lame for not upgrading sooner), to a Mac Mini and hopefully, CS4. Is there a way I can buy the upgrade and install it, or do I have to buy CS2 or CS3 to even install CS4? Do I have to install the original CS Premium program (which was an upgrade from Photoshop in 2005), on the new computer to even get started? Thanks...

You need to buy the upgrade from CS to CS4. there is no puzzle its all on the store pages. Also you can't buy CS2 or CS3 as they have been discontinued.

I am puzzled by the meaning of iMac (Intel) as I use an iMac 2 period.  I am running Mac : Office 2004 and do all my quotations in Excel.  After upgrading to OS X LION,  I am suddenly unable to SAVE my spreadsheets.  As a salesman whose quotations need frequent updating,  my situation is perilous to say the least.  Can anyone help me ?

Office for Mac 2004 is NOT compatible with Lion. It must be upgraded to Office for Mac 2008 or 2011, once you have upgraded the files will be accessable. Office for Mac 2004 is written for old PPC (Power PC) based machines. Beginning with Lion support for PPC based apps has been dropped.

  • Have been going into and out of Firefox since 1530GMT without problems but message on main screen has change to normal one from stating "Upgrade to latest version" and I'm puzzled how that can have happened ?

This is a follow up to my message sent around 1529GMT where very time I started Firefox, it would show the message "Upgrade to latest version. So I did - every day for last four days - but the Upgrade message would still be there. Suddenly, today from 1600-ish GMT the problem has disappeared. Has someone changed something somewhere ?

this is total bullshit. so frustrated with this nonsense.

  • Puzzle with Upgrading G5 with 2*500GB RAID

    Hi,
I have Dual Core 2GHz Mac. It has 2 slots for SATA Hard drives.
One slot is occupied with a 160GB.
I want to replace it with 2*500GB SATA drives in RAID for redundancy.
I thought I could do that by copying my 160GB to one 500GB, and then replacing the 160GB with the second 500GB.
But I couldn´t set the two 500GB up in RAID as it looks like they need to be set up like this during initialization.
How can I do that then?
    Thanks.
    Michael
    G4 2*1.8GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   SATA 300250GB256 Radeon

    Hi Michael Bouday;
I ws afraid of that. RAID 1 or mirroring is not a substitution for backup. the only thing it does is protect you from disk failure. The data on a RAID 1 array must still be backed up to protect.
By was of an example let use say you using an application that has a number of files open. The application aborts taking the files with it. How will you recover?
You can't because the files will be gone from both disks. Hence the need for backup even with RAID 1.
I think the better solution is to put your efforts into backup no matter how much you might dislike it. Back up is your salvation.

  • Huge ntuser.dat.LOG1 since upgrade to Windows 8.1 prohibits roaming of user profile

    Hello,
a few days ago my PC (part of our domain) first started to have problems with my user profile. Our domain uses roaming profiles with a size limit of 30MB. My user.dat has a size of 12.5MB. Up to now this did not cause any problems (and does not cause any for
most users of our domain having a user.dat of similar size). However, after upgrading to Windows 8.1 I repeadly have problems with my profile exceeding its maximum size. After checking my profile, I found a ntuser.dat.LOG1 with 12,5MB in size and a ntuser.dat.LOG2
of 2MB. As far as I know these files are used to store temporary transactions for the user.dat. But why are they this large? Together they almost completely fill the profile. As an interesting side node the last modification of ntuser.dat.LOG1 dates back more
    then seven days.
What is further puzzling me: ntuser.dat.LOG1 and ntuser.dat.LOG2 are not synchronized with the roaming profile on the server. At least they are not on the server. However there used to be much smaller versions of these files which could have been transfered
before the profile size exceeded its limit. Since these file seem not to be part of the roaming part of the profile, they should not count for the roaming profile size. However, they definitely do. Neglecting the registry files the largest file in my profile
is less than 500kb and there are very few files of this size. I checked locally as well as on our server.
Deleting the local profile and starting fresh using the roaming profile from our server does work for a day or two but then I run into the same problem. Especially, loosing all local profile data is inconvenient. I could start a new with a completely new
profile, but I am not convinced that it is a profile issue. In our organisation my computer is one of the first to move to Windows 8.1. Since my profile worked without problems for years now, I am worried that I ran into a Windows 8.1 issue. As users normally
start to complain about a roaming profile not synchronizing only after their local copy broke, I'd like to make sure that this is a isolated issue.
Anyone else experiencing similar issues? Any hint on how to solve the problem?
    Regards,
    Oliver

No, I did not find a solution. However, we moved away from roaming profiles and rely on folder redirection only. That works for us. Since we can redirect the most important folders there is no more need for roaming profiles (at least in our case).

  • Upgrade G3 B&W and G4 Single Processor from OS 9.2.1 to 10.4 Tiger?

I Purchased a G4 Installation / restore disk OS 10.4......Used an external DVD drive and disk opens fine on both machines, but when I click on install, both machines give me the following error message (even if I use the "C" key on startup..."startup disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk (-2)....There is no support for OS 9 or it's related browsers on the internet, and I use both my G3 (home) and G4 (business)....I need to have access to the internet in both locations. Would someone kindly give me some advice on how to upgrade to OS 10.4.......drivers?.......use external Hard drive? Many thanks in advance......

Hi Limnos......Many thanks for the info...good stuff. As it turns out, my G3 B&W is a server version and was given to me by a company that I worked for until they moved to northern (brrr) Wisconsin. It has two SCSI cards, one of them the LVD -2 ADPT card. Thanks to you I have already installed the firmware on the card. Some of the info on trhe G3 suggests that I need to be running O.S. 8.6 to upgrade to O.S. X???? I have been running O.S.9.2.1 for years but Comcast, E- Bay and half the rest of the world out there no longer supports Browsers, etc. for O.S. 9....Why would I need 8 when I have 9.2.1.that doesn't make much sense. This computer IMHO was way ahead of it's time and cost the company that gave it to me something in the neighborhood of $2700.00 when they bought it new! It has two firewire ports along with USB and the SCSI
cards and SCSI hard drive.....It is a great computer, and the only reason that I never tried to upgrade to O.S.10
sooner is the fact that it has been rock solid reliable running 9.2.1, and I kept hearing about "glitches going on with the early versions of O.S.10." You know how that one goes..."If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it". I had Adelphia Cable Internet for quite a few years, and they supported O.S.9, but their tech people for the most part were clueless about the macs. I really need to get X on this machine!
One final question...My G4 is a single processor 733 machine, and believe it or not was given to my son when it was only a year old! We didn't get an O.S. install disk with it, but the (gray) disk I just purchased IS
a G4 (specific) install/ restore disk that according to many threads I've seen should work on my G4. I haven't been able to determine from the info you so kindly gave me if it needs a firmware update or not? There seem to be so many versions of the G4 that I'm not sure what category it fits into as far as firmware requirements are concerned........It has plenty of RAM and two firewire ports, but beyond that I'm puzzled. Thanks again!

  • Windows machines can't join domain after 10.5.4 upgrade

    Howdy folks,
I have a ticket open with Apple on this but am posting here in hopes that someone might have an idea for me.
I upgraded our Mac OS X Server 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 on Sunday, and this morning several users reported that their PCs running Windows XP SP2 were unable to login to the Windows domain hosted on this machine. It's the primary domain controller for the Windows users.
One thing to note is that I had to reinstall the server completely because the 10.5.4 patcher crashed, creating all kinds of mayhem. I did a fresh install of OS X Server 10.5 and immediately applied the 10.5.4 combo updater to it. I had to restore the Open Directory from an archival copy, and the SMB was created fresh. Not sure why but the SMB services weren't preserved by the Server settings export command in Server Admin.
I thought unbinding the PC from the Windows domain and then rebinding it with a new name would help, but I've been completely unable to add older computers to the domain, even after removing the old computer records first.
I've got a reproducible failure mode for this problem on a Windows XP virtual machine running on VMware Fusion on my Mac. Here's the method I've been using to create the failure:
    1. Change Windows XP System name to something new that doesn't already have a computer record on the Mac OS X Server and reboot.
    2. After the reboot, run "NewSID" program on Windows to globally change my Windows machine's SID to a new, random value, and reboot again.
    3. Attempt to use the Network ID wizard in the Windows Control Panel to re-add the machine to the domain under a new name so there's no conflict with any old computer records floating around in Open Directory. After it prompts me to enter the username, password and domain name for a user who's authorized to add machines to the domain, I get a dialog box that displays this error:
"Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred:
    An internal error occurred."
    Not too informative.
Here are the error messages I see in /var/log/samba/log.smbd (searching for the new computer name in the search field):
    netbios connect: name1=BIGMAC name2=JEFFVM6
    netbios connect: local=bigmac remote=jeffvm6, name type = 0
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
    odssam_getgrnam gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Groups record for 'JEFFVM6$'!
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
kDSStdAuthNewUser was successful for account "jeffvm6$"
At that point it's impossible to join the computer to the domain no matter what. The most puzzling thing is that SOME of our users were able to login without any problems whatever. The ones that were either physically off or somewhere else when the 10.5.4 upgrade was applied are the only PCs that seem to be having problems.
Any help at all is appreciated. I suspect this is some kind of a SID conflict because the SMB server had to be recreated from scratch, but have no idea how to fix the client, the server, or both to make the computer account creation process work.

    The problem is fixed.
The issue boils down to an argument between the Open Directory server on bigmac (the OS X Server machine) and the SMB server on bigmac. The crucial information I needed to solve this problem was located here: http://www.radiotope.com/node/61
The Open Directory database had to be restored from a backup following this weekend's problematic upgrade, and it had a different value for the SID for the Windows domain than the one used by the SMB server software itself. Even stranger was that the Open Directory database actually had the wrong domain name! The It was listed as "BIGMAC" in Open Directory, even though it was set to the correct Windows domain name in the SMB server.
The solution was to demote the SMB server from a Primary Domain Controller to a Standalone Machine, and then repromote it. Although I changed no values in the settings, and did not modify the plist containing the SID in the Open Directory via the Inspector in Workgroup Admin, after the SMB PDC was repromoted, the SIDs and the domain names in Open Directory and the SMB config agreed with each othe. Now new machines can join the domain and users can login just as they did before. No client-side modifications are necessary.
Hope this is helpful to someone else. It was quite the hair-pulling experience for a while there.

  • Project Expenditure inquiry doesn't show expenditures after 12.1.3 upgrade

    Hi,
I am puzzled with this issue here. We are currently in the UAT phase R12 upgrade (11.5.10.2 to 12.1.3) some reason one of the super user is not able to look at the expenditures using the expenditure inquiry screen. Everyone else is able to see the expenditure/ cost distribution lines etc. I have checked the 11i instance and the user is able to see the expenditures for the same project.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Can you check whether the profile option PA: Cross Project View option has been set to 'No' by nay chance?

  • Upgrading to uber SDO_GEOMETRY, looking for comments

    Good morning folks,
I see the new thread from Dalibor discussing an issue with what I am calling "uber" SDO_GEOMETRY - anyone got a better name?
    Uber SDO_GEOMETRY is described here
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e11830/sdo_migrat.htm#CHDBCHBG
Dalibor wins some kind of prize for the first time anyone has brought up uber SDO on the forum since the old thread ran its course years back
Re: SDO_GEOMETRY size limits here to stay?
Coincidentally this past week was my first shot at trying out the upgrade script and I thought I might post my experiences and see if anyone would have comments. This was just a test machine and I agree that each major error could have been followed up with a SR. But my overall goal is to determine if installing and running uber SDO_GEOMETRY is feasible in my production environment, so for better or worse these experiences are building those recommendations.
So I am not much interested in going much in length why anyone would want to upgrade. I think the old thread covers it. For my work at least, the issues have not gone away. No question a polygon with millions of vertices is nutty, but they are out there all over the place and growing in number each year. Here are two additional datasets I am working with that are "over the top" for normal SDO:
    * National Wetlands Inventory (http://www.fws.gov/wetlands/data/DataDownload.html) - Largest polygon has 1,210,907 vertices.
    * FEMA National Flood Hazard Layer (http://www.msc.fema.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/info?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&content=nfhlResources&title=NFHL%20Resources) - Largest polygon has 1,537,698 vertices.
My current procedure is to load the datasets using ESRI's geometry format, identify the biggies, export the remainder and then reimport them as SDO_GEOMETRY.
E.g. toss the big polygons away and explain to my clients that Oracle Spatial cannot handle this type of thing.
My production instances remain on 10g so uber SDO is not yet a possibility but I am trying to think ahead.
So back to the present. I started with a fresh 11gR2 (no upgrade history) running PSU 11.2.0.1.2 on OpenSUSE on a rather modest machine with two processors and four gig of RAM. I have about 100 gig of Oracle Spatial data on this machine. Basically I ended up running the upgrade script four times of the course of about 5 days, each run required about 30 hours to process. Here are some notes:
    * Make sure you spool the results! The script is quite "verbose" and does not have any error checking so the ALTER TYPE CASCADE part can fail but the script continues recompiling packages and rebuilding all your indexes. This is good in that the system is put back together whether it bombs or not. Bad in that you can waste a lot of time waiting to rerun the script.
    * You need lots of undo! The first time it ran through it appeared to finish and it was not until I looked at the logs did I see that I ran out of undo. I just had a single smallfile undo and it topped out at 32 gig. In the end I created 4 undo datafiles and it appears I needed 100 gig of undo! So I believe you need as much undo as you have SDO_GEOMETRY data. The first thing you want to do afterwards is DESCRIBE MDSYS.SDO_ORDINATE_ARRAY to see if the type was altered. If you see the usual 1048576 then you bombed.
    * Second time through I received an error that I had some spatial indexes in a failed state. Turns out as this is a development box there was an index stuck in "INPROGRS" state due to some flub on my part. This was enough to hose the upgrade. I would suggest folks check for this ahead of time using SELECT * FROM dba_indexes WHERE index_type = 'DOMAIN' AND domidx_status != 'VALID' and drop or rebuild those indexes.
    * Third time through I received the cryptic error
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-22324: altered type has compilation errors
ORA-22332: a dependent object in schema "NAVTEQ_SF" has errors.
    ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [qctostiix1], [], [], [], [], [],
[], [], [], [], [], []I had some sample Navteq data for use with the networking demo I never got functioning. At this point after four days of trying I was getting a bit impatient and just decided to drop that schema and try again. I have no idea why this navteg data caused an issue but the error never happened again with any other datasets.
    * Fourth time through the alter type worked! But the script still crashed with
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [qximgcn1], [], [], [], [], [], [],
ORA-06512: at line 14After eyeballing the script and the spool file it looks like it failed in the final step where it rebuilds all the spatial indexes. This seems right as I found sixty seven bad spatial indexes afterwards. However, it was easy enough to rebuild those by hand myself (I mean have ArcSDE do so).
    So I call this a success! :)
So I am looking for anyone else's experiences they'd like to share.
With the amount of undo required, I think it might be a better route to just use the old school exp to export out all spatial data, run the upgrade and then imp it all back in? Or perhaps just dump out the large tables? Weird 00600 errors cause the DBAs (not part of my organization) that manage my production environment to bleed internally. Ideally I would like to avoid all that pain and suffering. Perhaps just dropping ALL the spatial indexes before the upgrade? I guess I would need to open an SR to see what caused the 00600s. I suspect the indexes.
So I would like to keep this thread tied to the upgrade process and/or planning/strategy for the upgrade process. There are a lot of other issues that we should start new threads over. For example, exchange of data between standard and uber instances as Dalibor is doing. It sure appears that datapump is never going to work and that only the old-school unsupported imp/exp utility can play this role? I have done some initial testing and ESRI's sdeimport/sdeexport tools seems to work fine between these instances. And none of this even scratches the performance issues.
So hey Dalibor, I know you went through this. Any comments?
    Cheers!
    Paul

    Hi Mike,
Nice to hear from you. I would indeed be interested in your thoughts on the upgrade and the actual business case surrounding the upgrade or the decision not to upgrade. I am feeling rather skeptical at this point as the side-effects of the medicine so far are pretty serious. But yet the need to treat the disease remains. You can always drop me an email offline at my first name at my last name dot com or via LinkedIn. The nice things about a super-rare unpronounceable Polish last name is I am easy to find - and that's the bad thing too. Here is an update on my testing.
Per my earlier SR, the folks are Oracle have provided a backport for bug 10085580 for Linux 32-bit. It looks to work just fine and does the trick - problem solved. If one needs something other than Linux you will need to request the backport for your platform. The bug affects more than SDO_GEORASTER so I would recommend this patch as mandatory.
Moving along my next issue is that Oracle MapViewer does not seem to work with uber SDO_GEOMETRY.
MapViewer and uber (Very Large) SDO_GEOMETRY upgrade not compatible?
This is again a bit of a nonstarter as my client has a couple of applications using MapViewer against production instances. I dutifully submitted an SR on the matter yesterday. Almost to be expected the tech immediately asked why I would want to have such a large geometry and why don't I thin it! :)
It's no fun being in the middle on these things. I suppose I could ring up FEMA or Fish and Wildlife and tell them Oracle Corporation thinks their polygons are crazy. But as they are ESRI-shop folks, I think they would just be puzzled by the statement. If anyone has an opinion on how to broach the topic nicely with public agencies, I would love to hear it. Do we need to create a "citizens against huge polygons" lobby in DC? Again the ESRI shop folks are smirking.
The other issue in the thread started by Dalibor where the old imp/exp is erratically failing on the table creation statements is probably going to need an SR too. The work around is to just append the data and create your tables by hand ahead of time. On a more positive note ArcSDE seems utterly oblivious to the type change and I have not found any problems using ESRI tools to move stuff around.
    Cheers,
    Paul

  • Problems with my second monitor after upgrading to Mountain Lion

Basically I have a Mac Pro 8-core with two video boards (2 x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB) connected to two monitors. After upgrading to the Lion Mountain, 90% of the time when I start my MAC the second monitor doesn't show it image, keeps in full black screen, what puzzle me is, I can see the mouse arrow on it, so its alive, but its in black, than I have to restart the computer over and over again until it finally make the second shows it contains.
Have anyone experienced the same problem?!

    Hello Carlo!
Sorry but I don't understand which part of my question is not clear. I've been to the Apple Store, they asked me to bring my 20kg Mac Pro and both 24" inches Eizo monitors to central London to have it checked. Well, honestly, this is impossible, is an invitation for an accident.
Is just unbeliavable that no one has experienced my problem, looks like I am the only one person with two monitors using the Lion Mountain.

  • Restarting after upgrading to Leopard

    Hi, everybody. Here's my problem:
I just upgraded my iBook from old Panther to Leopard. Everything seemed to be fine and after the upgrading theiBook told me to restart: well, it doesn't start again, I just get the grey screen with the apple and the small lines running in circle endlessly.
I've checked the answers in another topic, where the same things seemed to happen to someone else, but the solutions there didn't work for me.
I thought the problem was that the iBook starts on the Install DVD and not on the HD: but I guess I'm wrong, because it doesn't start even when I insert the Install DVD. I'm very puzzled.
    Thanks for your help.

The first thing to do is to make sure the installer disk is an appropriate one for your iBook. Did you use a retail version of the Leopard installer or something else? (The retail version comes in a black box that says "Mac OS X Leopard" on it & lists the version number somewhere on the end panel & on the disk itself.)
If not, this is probably the problem -- the grey disks that come with new Macs will not work, & even if they did, it would be a violation of the licensing terms to use them on another Mac.
Next, it would help if you described more about what you meant when you wrote "I restored HD" -- do you mean that you used Disk Utility's "Repair Disk" step or something else? If that is what you mean, did you do this from the version of Disk Utility on the Leopard install disk, or with some other version?
In general, only if a viable system is installed on a volume can you select it & run Disk Utility's other repair step, the one that repairs permissions. If you could do this, it suggests there is an OS installed on the drive, but you must make sure you have chosen the normal, internal start up disk for this step or it doesn't mean that.
Please furnish a bit more detail about these things so that we can suggest the most promising steps to help you resolve your problem.

  • Iphoto-iphone sync weirdness after upgrading to Mavericks

I didn't receive any replies on the Mavericks board, so I'll repost this here.  Really puzzled and annoyed.
recently upgraded my iMac to Mavericks from Snow Leopard (early adopter that I am).  Much has gone more smoothly than I expected.
However, one thing that is really strange is that after I synced my iphone 5s, I noticed that two of the iphoto albums I've synced include some extraneous photos on the phone (not in the albums on iphoto on the iMac).  I tried deleting the albums from the phone during the next sync, duplicating and renaming them in iphoto, and syncing to the new albums, but the extraneous pictures are still there.
I'm syncing to my computer and not icloud, for what it's worth.
Since then, I've noticed that not only are most of the albums messed up, but the time/date stamps on the pictures are all wrong so sorting by date reusults in a fairly chaotic mess.
    Any ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Jim

Just upgraded and Iphoto will not work,
Check that iPhoto is v9.5.1 (In Applications, highlight iPhoto, and ⌘I)
If it is v9.5.1, then hold option-command and click the iPhoto icon and go through the repair steps.

I am puzzled by this. The laptop doesn't need the Apple ID - but iTunes does. I could be missing something but ....
Why would you not be able to use your existing Apple ID and iTunes account on a new laptop? If you authorized the computer - you should be able to use your existing account - unless you already had 5 computers authorized with the existing ID - and that was why iTunes would not accept the ID. However, I'm sure that you would have received a popup message from iTunes telling you that you had reached the limit.
I just received a new MBP and my daughter did as well. My entire family shares an Apple ID and we had no issues at all with my Apple ID and iTunes on our new computers and I did not have to sign up for a new account. Did you even try the old ID?
