I removed lightdm-webkit-greeter and my arch linux doesn't boot any more.
What can I do?
Kees
If your arch doesn't boot anymore use a live cd, mount your system, and then install the lightdm-webkit2-greeter with pacman. If you use pacman -U <package-name> it will install what it already downloaded.

Should I remove /usr/lib/dovecot/imap and /usr/libdovecot/pop3 and continue the upgrade, or is there a problem with a package?

[Solved] system upgrade fails with util-linux/eject conflict
I backed everything up, then deleted the fontconfig links and updated fontconfig, which worked properly. Then I did "pacman -Syu" and got this:
[root@myhost ~]# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
core is up to date
extra is up to date
community is up to date
multilib is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...

error: unresolvable package conflicts detected
error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)
:: util-linux and eject are in conflict
[root@myhost ~]#
Looks like two distinct problems. Note that I already have the /lib thing taken care of (turning it into a link), in a previous update. The forum searches I have done about this issue did not yield much.

Upgrading that infrequently is unlikely to work well in the long term.
Hell, I thought that was upgrading frequently. One of the reasons I'm on linux is because I don't have to get upgrades every hour as on Windows. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I ran a hell of a lot longer on Puppy linux without upgrades. Also, I backup before every upgrade, and then have to fiddle with pacnew files and all the rest, so the result is burning half a day at least on upgrades. I sure don't want to increase the frequency of that.
Arch is a rolling release so it changes basically every day. Updating every week or two is perfectly fine, but updating every couple months brigs you at odds with what Arch is about.
One of the reasons you may not want to use Arch is when you don't want to or can't spend time on the updates.
PaulBx1 wrote:The choice of defaults should (in my opinion) be decided by the needs of the unsophisticated user (such as myself), of which there are many more than the other type. Sophisticated users can intelligently decide between "y" and "n" because they know what is going on. Unsophisticated users just cross their fingers and hope the defaults work for them.
Arch is for experienced users and pacman doesn't do e.g. cleaning up - that's left to the user. pacman can surely help with it: 'pacman 'Qdt'.
It may feel unintuitive, but that's how it is. -

Last edited by isolet (2013-10-16 03:09:02)hi everybody from the Indian Ocean , especially Rodrigues Island-Republic of Mauritius !
I am now running a Archlinux Vm with 3 desktop environemnts such as Gnome, Mate and Xfce4 . I am encounting a conflict file issue between lightdm , lightdm-Ubuntu and lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf !
The system says that lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf creates a conflict and , when installing Unity as per " chenxiaolong :https://github.com/chenxiaolong/Unity-for-Arch" or through the Wiki method I am always stuck ! I don't even have the " /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/com.canonical.unity-greeter.gschema.xml" ! The nearest I've got is " com.canonical.unity-gtk-module.gschema " ! This means that even lightdm-ubuntu-greeter cannot be installed ......What must I do ? -

I'm sorry - I was trying to help myself by following the errors, as reported. It seemed that my problem stemmed from lib32-harfbuzz and lib32-freetype2, so I was attempting to remove those. However, wine was dependent on them so had to be removed first.
I told you want needed to be done. If you ignore provided advice and instead do other random things (without actually specifying what you are doing) then no one can help you.
Indeed, your posting did point me in the right direction, but did not appear until after I had posted about my experiment with wine. Wine is no great loss, anyway - I've never managed to achieve anything useful with it!
As you indicated, my problems were resolved by updating package-query:
yaourt package-query
Edit: In my searching, I did come across advice to use pacaur instead of yaourt - I'm not sure whether this would have made any difference in my case.
My analysis, wrongly or rightly, is this:
1) AUR packages (some?) appear to list pacman version as a dependency. "pacman -Syu" was attempting to update itself to 4.2 which broke the dependency (<4.2), even though 4.1.x was running at the time - there's a recipe for confusion! This was resolved by rebuilding package-query before updating the rest of the system, because the latest version has updated the pacman dependency.
2) lib32-harfbuzz and lib32-freetype2 (both AUR packages?) were in conflict - they cannot (must not) be dependent on each other. This was resolved by pulling later versions during the rebuild of package-query.
3) The libreoffice problem was not an issue. My mistake was that I ignored a lifetime of experience working in IT - I concentrated on the last-reported error rather than the first! All I can say in my defence is that eight years of retirement must have addled my brain!
In short, two, unrelated, errors, conflated with another, relatively insignificant, error message, led me on a wild goose chase.
I thank you for your wise counsel!

[SOLVED] Cannot change the lightdm-unity-greeter background
Hi.
So I installed the lightdm-ubuntu and lightdm-unity-greeter (which needed lightdm-ubuntu) from the AUR, and when I read both the wiki and the web, they said that I needed to install the lightdm package, not lightdm-ubuntu (when I install lightdm-ubuntu, it conflicts with lightdm, forcing me to remove it). So I installed it, used it, saw the nice login screen, but I would like to remove the dots showing up over the background AND change the background. I read that there is a config in the /etc/lightdm folder, but when I tried finding it, it was not there.
ls /etc/lightdm showed me:
keys.conf lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf users.conf
lightdm.conf lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf~
lightdm.conf.pacsave lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.pacsave
I do not want to have the background of the login the same as my background when I'm logged in, so I don't think gnome-settings-daemon-ubuntu and accountsservice-ubuntu should be needed. And even if they are, I would like to find a way to change it without installing those packages, since I can't install them easily -- this computer is a school computer and is connected through a filter, which unnecessarily blocks many sites (like say, eclipse.org and gnu.org, but that is not the point), and freedesktop.org is one of them.
I would appreciate if anyone knows how to do that.
Thanks.
EDIT: Solved. faidoc's answer was priceless.

[Solved] Upgrade fails because of net-tools
It was almost a week since I last did a "pacman -Syu" on my system. Before that, I had read about depreciation of net-tools and have already modified my rc.conf to use the newer simple network setup. Everything was working fine. Even upgradation of the system (pacman -Syu) also worked fine last week.
I was out of town for a few days. So, when I came back on Sunday, I tried updating the system. Pacman found updates and downloaded them. But it failed when actually upgrading the packages. It gives the following error:

As you can see it complains about /bin/hostname file existing in the filesystem and that causing problem for net-tools package. I'm not sure how or why this happened. The /bin/hostname is supposed to be available on the filesystem, right?
Since net-tools was depreciated in favour of netcfg, I tried removing net-tools. When I try that, it offers to remove netcfg package as well!

What I did was to upgrade each package manually (excluding net-tools package). But this is cumbersome and tedious. I did a search on the forum and on internet and did not find other people with the same problem. So, is something wrong/corrupt on my arch installation?
If so, how do I fix it?
Thanks in advance,
Vinay V
Last edited by vinayv (2011-06-22 01:31:49)Thanks for the reply. I should have searched for a generic "exists in filesystem" rather than net-tools error specific "/bin/hostname exists in filesystem". I thought this was because of the recent move to netcfg from net-tools. Maybe I'm mistaken.
Anyway, thanks for pointing out that stikie to me. Let me try the suggestions in that post -

Last edited by bebopson (2013-02-24 15:26:20)This looks like a pacaur bug, due to the weird looking PKGBUILD. I guess the pacaur maintainer will have a look at it as soon as possible.
In the meantime, use makepkg (pacaur -de jruby && cd /tmp/pacaur-blabla/jruby && makepkg -si)
Edit: pacaur-git should now be working as expected.

[SOLVED]Full upgrade fails after new install
Hello,
Please note before reading that I know about the recent changes with the /lib symlink to /usr/lib and the filesystem (I read the home page).
After a fresh install, I try to upgrade the system :
pacman -Syy && pacman -Syu : it asks for pacman update, I say yes.
pacman -S pacman : fails because of glibc
pacman -S pacman --ignore glibc : fails, won't upgrade because glibc it's a dependency of pacman
pacman -Syu : say no to pacman upgrade, fails because of glibc and filesystem
pacman -Syu --ignore glibc --ignore fliesystem : upgrade almost nothing because most of the packages (~400M) need glibc
I can't upgrade anything at the end...
Thanks for any help
Last edited by John0000 (2012-07-19 14:52:17)If either of this steps does not work (e.g. due to dependency version issues, file conflicts in /lib), refer to this G U I D E for more detailed instructions on performing this upgrade.
Did you read this guide?
There is thread about it also: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=144620
And Allan wrote a blog entry about upgrading from core installation: http://allanmcrae.com/2012/07/updating- … e-install/
BTW as Pres suggested go with the net-install, core installation was always kind of a fallback for me and I had to do this just once because of network troubles. It just doesn't make much sense to do core installation if there is no holdback because with first pacman -Syu you'll end up downloading the same amount of data as if you would do a clean net-install, and it's faster and you probably won't get conflicts accumulated from year or so.

Libgl-dri - libgl upgrade fails because libGL.so.1 is present.
Attempting the libgl-dri -> libgl upgrade :
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
libgl: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 exists in filesystem
errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
Umm thinking as I type, perhaps this is because I have the nVidia proprietary driver installed and did that when I installed Arch a couple of months ago and realise that it was available via pacman. I will post anyway in case the issue affects anyone else, or someone can tell me that there is a different reason.
And a P.S. by way of an edit. I just tried to install the upgrade to mplayer separately from libgl (it came as part of the same -Syu exercise), and it fails for the same reason - maybe that was the problem in the first place?

You mean you installed nvidia from their 'official installer'? That would cause this problem - if you want nvidia, use pacman's packages to avoid this in the future. -

There are quite a lot or replaces needed, but maybe it is okay.
Main problem is that there is some krb5 errors, which prevent from upgrading

is it safe to use -f switch.
thanks
Note: thanks pressh. As I did not subscribe to dev public, I am not aware of the solution also not in the home page. The cobalt theme prevent me to switch to home from the forum page .

Hmm, waiting a week or so before doing an update does not seem like a bad idea...

ThanksI believe it is strongly advised not to use --force, especially for a system-wide upgrade. But it could be ok to use it only for the specific package that is causing this problem.
In this case you could use pacman -Qo to check if one of those files belong to a package or not.
If you indeed installed those from a third party source, it may be cleaner to delete the whole directorie(s) you copied manually instead of using --force on the new package, so that there are no leftover files.
