Upgrading legacy application

Please don't laugh, but we are still using rpt (sql*report)
Yes, I know it was desupported before some of you were born, but up until now it has still worked, so we have not bothered to rewrite a number of complicated application modules.
We are now migrating to a new server with oracle 11 on Solaris 11 and rpt is failing with ora-3113.
I remember we had a similar problem with oracle 9 and found a bizarre fix - I think it involved regranting connect to each user, but that has not worked this time.
Has anyone encountered rpt running against oracle 10 or 11 ?
Does anyone know a reason why it should not work ?
The rpt we are using with 9.2 is installed under an old oracle 7 home. I have not copied the whole oracle_home onto the new server so perhaps rpt is dependent on some other files ?

rpt used to work fine with 9i, since client applications from 7.3 used to be supported against 9iR2, however since 10gR1 connections with 7.3 clients is no longer supported, so the only choice you have is either rebuild your application with a modern reporting tool or use 9i as a bridge rdbms between the legacy application and the 11g database through database links.

  • Old/Legacy application requires Local Admin Rights to open Reader

    Hi,
I've got few users who has a very old application. The app generates certain report in PDF format and then it's supposed to open it up in Adobe Reader. Currently, the users are using Adobe Reader version 6.
I'm trying to get these users upgraded to latest version of Adobe Reader. After some testing, it seems that this old application works fine if the users are given Local Admin Rights to the computer. The application can successfully generate its reports and then open it up in Adobe Reader.
The users are running on Windows XP SP3. While testing, I gave users full access to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\" and the legacy application's installation folder, since I'm not sure why the Local Admin Rights allows Reader to open. However, this didn't seem to help.
Is there anything you can suggest in this case?

What's with the %3E entity on the end of the URL you posted?

  • Upgrading JWS applications installed in the system cache (enterprise)

    Hello,
On request from several customers, I've looked into the best way to install a web start application for all users on a computer. These customers have users sharing computers, and the IT department doesn't want to be inconvenienced with installing applications on every user profile on every computer. The following articles provides a thorough explanation into how this can be done.
    http://download.oracle.com/javase/1.5.0/docs/guide/javaws/developersguide/javaws.html
    http://download.oracle.com/javase/1.5.0/docs/guide/deployment/deployment-guide/properties.html
By specifying the system deployment.config and deployment.properties files and performing the following installation command as an administrator, the application is made available for all current and new users with shared icons on the desktop and the start menu. This works actually very nicely.
    javaws -system -import https://server/app.jnlp
However, I'm running into different problems when trying to upgrade the application. The application uses an online shortcut (but can be run in offline) and the update check is set to background.
If an ordinary (non-administrator) user start the application when a new version is available on the server, web start downloads the new version in the background, but into the user's personal cache! When restarting the application, the old shared version still starts. Web start does not download the new version, presumably because it found the new files in the personal cache.
Another approach I tested was to use offline icons and manually performing a new system installation/import. This downloads the new version into the shared system cache, but leaves all shortcuts invalid. Now the only solution to start the application is to run it from Java Control Panel. It's not even possible to recreate the shortcuts.
I'm wondering if I'm doing anything wrong or if there exists some best practices for enterprise installations that I'm not aware of. I'm suspecting that these problems are due to limitations or bugs with JWS, but I thought to check with the community before reporting it officially to Oracle.
The customers are using client computers with Windows flavours.
I've been testing on Windows 7 64 bit using the 32 bit JRE 1.6.0_u23.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated. If you are handling enterprise installations in altogether different manner, don't hesitate to respond.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Were you able to solve your problem?
Actually, I'm planning to install the application for all users in a system and I'm on the investigation process.
In fact, these are my concerns:
    - What is going to happen if a user with limited permissions tries to install a javaws application and it has been enable to be installed on system cache?
    - Where the deployment files need to be located? In the web server (where jnlp is located)?
    - Could system cache installation be performed automatically (when jnlp file is launched) or it would be performed by a system administrator?
If you could share some information on how you installed a javaws application for all users, I would really appreciate it.

  • Session Time Out capturing for legacy application running in portal

    Hi Forums,
I am using portal URL  iView to connect to legacy application. How to capture the session time of of that legacy application and show it in the portal. In portal I have already handled session time out which shows a javascript popup message. I want to call the same piece of code once session time out happens in the legacy application which is been accessed by portal through URL iview.
    Many Thanks and Best Regards
    Sudhir

    Hi Sudhir,
The handling of the session timeout should be done by the application itself not the portal. From the portal you have no way of working out what the application is doing. My suggestion to you is that you need to modify the application to handle the scenario you describe not the portal.

  • IdM 7 and SSO for legacy applications

    Dear experts,
Per SAP NetWeaver 7 documentation new approach allows SSO for any legacy applications without a need for a 3rd party IdM solution.
Could someone explain how this is handled? Does evary non-SAP application need to become aware of SAP IdM credential store and be able to interact with it, or some other - non-intrusive approach is being used?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eugene.

    Hi Eugene,
SAP NetWeaver Identity Management 7.0 handles the provisioning of users (identities) for a heterogeneous landscape. Authentication and Single Sign-On (SSO) is being handled within the SAP NetWeaver platform. So introducing SAP NetWeaver Identity Management itself does not introduce additional SSO functionality.

  • How to make upgrade from application server and not from central instance?

    Hello SAP Gurus!
I have SAP ECC release 6.0, and I´m gonna make upgrade to enhancement package 6.06, do you know if Can I make upgrade from application server, but not from central instance?
    Thanks.

    Hi Victor,
Upgrade process has to execute from the server where message server is running.
So I guess it is not possible to initiate the SAP upgrade  from application server.

  • Keychain is no longer able to update itself when I upgrade an application

Recently, I have been experiencing a problem with Keychain Access. Whenever I upgrade an application that stores a password in my Keychain, I get the dialog box asking me if I want to update my keychain to correspond to the new version of the application. However, consistently, if I say yes, I get the spinning wait cursor and my computer starts to lag something awful. After a few minutes of spinning, the dialog box does disappear, but my keychain is not updated. Also, my computer then runs at an abysmally slow rate until I restart it.
The first couple of times I encountered this problem was only with the application Adium, and I thought the bug might be specific to that application, so I reported the bug to the Adium folks. (Other people had reported it as well, and no one seemed to have a solution.) However, I recently installed an iTunes upgrade, and I just experienced the exact same problem in iTunes, which leads me to believe that the problem is with OS X and/or Keychain Access and not with either Adium or iTunes.
If I manually delete my passwords from my Keychain, the upgraded applications have no problem whatsoever adding "new" passwords to my Keychain; the problem only arises when attempting to update my Keychain passwords to work with the new version of whatever software I recently upgraded.
For what it's worth, Keychain Access's "Keychain First Aid" finds no problems with my Keychain.
    Help?

Well, barring a Hardware problem, then let me give you my whole spiel!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If it appears to be time for An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

  • Upgrading Hyperion applications from EPM System 11.1.2.1 and 11.1.2.2. to 11.1.2.3

    Hi,
I am triyng to upgrade Hyperion classic applications from 11.1.2.1 and 11.1.2.2 to 11.1.2.3. I restored application's databases which has SQL database and upgraded applications successfully. But the other applications that have Oracle databases,  I can restore and upgrade the applications, but when I try to refresh database, it gives errors like that:
com.hyperion.planning.olap.HspVerifyOutlineException: Verify Outline failed with the following errors:
Error [100000800] detected in member "2012 Bakım": Shared member with no actual member
And it is only giving these errors  for members which have Turkish characters. And it gives like as this error for member formulas which have Turkish characters:
Error compiling formula for [] (line 1): unknown member name ["Sözleşme Türü Belirle"] in function [operator @X]
This application is working in 11.1.2.1, but after I migrated it ot 11.1.2.3, it started to give these problems. I controlled my oracle database parameters and they look OK, I am sending them too:
    NLS_LANGUAGE                   AMERICAN
    NLS_TERRITORY                  AMERICA
    NLS_CHARACTERSET               AL32UTF8
    NLS_SORT                       BINARY
How can I solve this problem ?
    Thanks
    Mehmet

    Hi Santy,
Thanks for your suggestion. We updated Turkish characters in DB then it's solved. When we create a shared member which has Turkish characters from zero, it gives no error while the refresh. And  if we delete all shared members and create them again, it gives no error again. I think the problem is about upgrading.

  • Upgrading multiple applications/clusters from 10.3.5  10.3.6

I am looking for any recommendations/best practices for upgrading a weblogic domain installation which has multiple applications with each application deployed to a cluster. Each application has its own customized startup scripts for starting up the managed servers and it is expected that each application will take time to be upgraded. Therefore the plan is to upgrade each application in a separate maintenance window and the system will be put into production after each maintenance window. As per the weblogic documentation it is ok to have managed servers running on different maintenace releases as long as they are on the same major and minor release (10.3.5 and 10.3.6 in this case). I have already reviewed the upgrade guide http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/web.1111/e13754/toc.htm. Any additional information would help.
    Edited by: user723056 on May 29, 2012 1:39 PM

The documentation states that WLS supports mixed versions of Maintenance pack level (as long as admin server is at same or higher level than the managed servers) but not mixed versions at the major and minor releases. I assumed that 10 was the major and 3 was the minor release number and that the .5 and .6 was the Maintenance pack level - is that not the case? ..Luc

  • Upgrading oracle applications doubt

    Hi,
I am upgrading oracle applications from 11.5.10.2 to R12.1.1 in linux OEL 5.
I have successfully upgraded the db from 9.2.0.6 to 10.2.0.5. And also new R12.1.1 file system is laid.
Now following upgrade guide, updated pfile as per R12 requirement and started the db with 10.2.0.5. [ Page 3-3 in R121 upgrade guide].
The next step is to apply the patch AD 7461070 [point 9 in page 3-5 page of r121 upgrade guide].
This patch needs to be applied on R12 application owner. But in my database release_name is 11.5.10.2.
How can i apply this patch??
    Thanks
    Taher

    Hi Taher,
1). First Created the R12 code tree. [Installed 11g db. Is this 11g DB HOME is of any use].This is the default ORACLE_HOME which comes with the installer -- You do not need to use it.
Database Preparation Guidelines for an E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 Upgrade [ID 761570.1]
2). Upgraded the DB from to 10.2.0.5. So does it mean i can use this 10.2.0.5 with both 11i and R12 just created in step 1.Not at the same time, as you will end up having R12 accessing the database (see the doc referenced above).
3). While applying the AD PATCH 7461070 i should copy adgrants to 10g ORALCE HOME. [not to 11g].
    applclone -> 11i appl. owner
applr12 -> r12 appl. ownerYes, as you are still on 10g.
I am posting the log file here. I knew that i can not apply R12 patch in 11.5.10.2 environment. What i did was i applied the patch R12_8576725 environment.
As you have asked the log file.
    AutoPatch error:
adprdf(): At line 3 in file u8576725.drv:
This patch cannot be applied to your current release.
    Patch's intended release is "12.0.0"
    Your current release is "11.5.10.2"
    Freeing includes hash table
    Freeing fixes hash table
    Freeing basedons hash table
Freeing entities hash tableHave you completed all the steps as per the upgrade document and run AutoConfig. I do not think this is relevant to which env file you are sourcing, as the RELEASE_NAME column value is still 11.5.10.2 and it should be 12.x.x (as you mentioned above). So, please mention the steps you have followed to upgrade this instance.

  • Upgrade Service Applications a week prior to Content DB attach

    Hi,
I ran a database attach upgrade from SP10 to SP13 in a test environment and now want to proceed with the production environment. In order to plan for the least possible downtime, I have the following questions:
Is it possible to upgrade Service Applications a week prior to the content databases?
Namely, I'm wondering about the Secure Store service app.
If the above is not desirable, would upgrading everything now (in 2010 mode) and then on the GoLive date, overwrite all Content DBs with the latest backup work?
    Thanks in Advance  :-)

I think you can do it, i dont see any issue in advance upgrade.
Personally, I would go with this approach(as i did this). Migrate every thing and test it with live data(so any issue you can fix before live). On day of GoLive, upgrade the current backup.

  • Help needed on upgrading portal application from sp3 to weblogic portal 10

    Hi Guys
I have an application which is currently running on BEA Weblogic Portal 8.1 sp3. We need to upgrade our application from 8.1 sp3 to BEA Weblogic 10 version.
    (1) Is there any way for upgradation from 8.1 sp3 to portal 10 directly or do I need to upgrade it from sp3 to sp4 and then from sp4 to portal 10? Pls clarify?
    (2) How reliable are the BEAs automated scripts for retaining the personalization/customization of my application on sp3 to upgraded version i.e portal 10?
    (3) I believe, we do not need to do any coding/design changes/architectural changes into my application for this upgrade.
Any help on this will be highly appreciated
    Thanks
    Jameel

    1) I believe only sp4 and later to weblogic 10 is supported (http://www.bea.com/content/news_events/white_papers/BEA_WL_Portal10_ds.pdf)
so yes i think you need to upgrade from sp3 to a later version of the service pack
    2) You tell us :)
    3) Depends on your application and the features you have used. E.g. I believe Content management has changed between sp3 and what 10 supports.

  • How to upgrade my application?

    Hi
Can any one explain me how to upgrade my application in webstart.
Is it enough to chang the Jar of my application in the server? or have I to mention in on JNLP file too?.Is there any tag to mention the version of application in Jnlp file?. Explain me how web start in the client side automaticaly upgrade the latest version?
    Thanks in advance.
    regards,
    selva.

First of all the easiest way of upgrading your application is by just replacing the jar file. WebStart compares the Timestamps of the Jar File the Client has and the Jar File the server has. If the Jar File on the Server is newer then the new file is downloaded.
A safer way is to use versioned based download. There is a tag (version=) but you have to obey som rules if you want to use versioned downloads. Best described are these methods in the JNLP Specs and in the WebStart developers Pack.
    Hpe that helps
