Uplinking Stacked 2960S with Etherchannel

I'm in the process of configuring the uplink of two stacked 2960S to a 3560X that is not stacked.
My plan is to configure 2 ports in each of the stacked 2960S' for a total of 4 Etherchannel members. On the other side, I'd configure the 3560X with a 4 member channel.
Would the configurations below work for what I intend to do?
#Configurations in 2960S Stack members
2960SMaster(config)int range g1/0/1 - 2
channel-group 1 mode active
2960SMember(config)int range g2/0/1 - 2
channel-group 1 mode active
#Configurations in 3560X core switch
3560X(config)int range g0/23 - 26
These configurations are based on article that deals with a similar scenario (except for two sets of stacked 3750's)
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-3750-series-switches/69979-cross-stack-etherchannel.html
Additional questions:
- These configurations assume LACP. Is there a reason not to use LACP here?
- Both sides are set to active, but I've seen it configured also in active-passive. Would I derive any benefit from one approach or the other?
- And finally, the n00b question. Do I use regular Ethernet cable or do I have to use cross-over?

- These configurations assume LACP. Is there a reason not to use LACP here?
No reason at all. LACP is the standard and PAGp is Cisco
- Both sides are set to active, but I've seen it configured also in active-passive. Would I derive any benefit from one approach or the other?
Active actively tries to negotiate whereas passive listens for lacp frames. You can use active/active or active/passive, but you won't be able to use 2 passive.
- And finally, the n00b question. Do I use regular Ethernet cable or do I have to use cross-over?
Regular cables should be fine.
The other things you need to keep in mind is that the ports in the channel group need to be configured the same way - speed, duplex, same vlans, etc. in order for them to for an etherchannel.

  • Packet drops on 2960 with port-security enabled

    Hello,
We are using the following port-security configuration on user access ports on Cisco 2960 switches, in order to protect the infrastructure to prevent MAC flooding attacks:
switchport port-security maximum 10 switchport port-security switchport port-security aging time 1 switchport port-security violation restrict switchport port-security aging type inactivity
There is a problem with the more "quiet" hosts, especially in technology - every time the MAC address ages out, the first packets (an ARP request usually) sent by the host is dropped by the switch. There is no violation logged, the switch should be OK to forward the packets but doesn't:
    Port Security              : EnabledPort Status                : Secure-upViolation Mode             : RestrictAging Time                 : 1 minsAging Type                 : InactivitySecureStatic Address Aging : DisabledMaximum MAC Addresses      : 10Total MAC Addresses        : 0Configured MAC Addresses   : 0Sticky MAC Addresses       : 0Last Source Address:Vlan   : 0011.aabb.ccdd:11Security Violation Count   : 0
When port-security is turned off, all packets are forwarded without trouble. This is happening on both WS-C2960-24TT-L and WS-C2960-8TC-L, with IOS 12.2(35)SE1 and 12.2(50)SE5, respectively. I didn't check other models yet.
I have found similar reports and bugs for the 2950 and 3750:

Is there anything we can do to fix this?
Is there an access switch that would not suffer from this problem? (Like 2960-S maybe?)
    Thank you.

    Hi Alioune,
This is expected behaviour on the Nexus 1000v Ethernet interfaces when the uplinks are configured with MAC pinning.
When using MAC pinning there's no special configuration of the ports on the upstream physical switches and so any broadcast packets are sent by the upstream switches on all uplinks towards the Nexus 1000v switch.
On each VEM of the Nexus there's one uplink interface that is chosen as the Designated Receiver for broadcast traffic, and the function of the DR is to forward received broadcast traffic to VMs within the VLAN. The broadcast traffic received on any other uplinks of the VEM i.e., those that are not the acting as DR, drop the received broadcast traffic on ingress to the VEM.
The drops you're seeing on the uplink interfaces are almost certainly the broadcast traffic being received on one or more non DR uplinks.

  • Can you stack 2960 Switch?

My question is can I stack two or more 2960 switches, master/slave design and be able to manage them both using the CMS technology or not. I don't quite understand the SFP, Small Form-Factor Pluggable, and the 2960 uplink ports. It appears as though one uplink will be in standby mode, therefore both ports can't be active at the same time. If that is the case it looks as though you can't stack becasue of only one uplink port being active.

    Hi Washro,
You cannot stack 2960 switch like you can do 3750 switches but you can still achieve clustering on this switch.
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat2960/12240se/scg/swclus.htm
Also both uplink ports can be active at a time if they get connected to some other switches but if 2 get uplink to same switch then STP will block one port.

  • Apex 3.2 SVG Chart - How to plot Stacked Bar With Negative Values ?

Currently Apex 3.2 Flash Chart (AnyChart 3.x) does not support Stacked bars with negative values.
I try with SVG Stacked bars with positive values only, chart ploting works fine. When I add a new series with negative values (i.e -1) and I get a blank Chart region with no error.
Based on this statement from Apex's documentation:
*"AxisLine Indicates zero on charts that have negative values."*
I appreciate your help on how to translate this statement into action ?
(i.e how to override .Axisline class in CSS section ?)
Thank you very much for your time.

    User614143,
try to add the minumm negative value (but positive) to the parameter for the axis.
e.g. show value+3000 (assuming -3000 is the minimum value)
If you don't have a limitation for the negative values, it doesn't work. (or try to calculate first the most negative value in a before header process)
    hope this helps.

  • Stacked canvas with horizontal scrollbar

    Hi,
In a forms module I want to show a stacked canvas with a horizontal scrollbar. I have set the generator preference POPHSB on every level to yes, but the stacked canvas is still generated without scrollbar. In the Designer help topic "Generated stacked canvas properties" it is stated that the properties horizontal/vertical scrollbar is derived from the object library. But how can I set in Designer the name of an object library object for a stacked canvas? I don't want to override the object CGSO$CANVAS_POPUP because I also have other stacked canvases that doesn't need scrollbars.
    Regards,
    Vincent Botteman

    Hi,
This is what I just have found: you must indeed create a new canvas object in the object library and then enter the name of the new canvas object in the property "Placement Template/Library Obj" of the first Module component on that canvas! Apparently, you can change the canvas by means of the first Module Component on that canvas.

  • Adding another link with etherchannel-PAGP

    Hi all,
I have a 10g trunk link between my two 4510 coreswitches.   Now the utilization on this link is shooting up to 9.5gb which is forcing us to put another 10g link  between these two switches.
We are planning to configure Etherchannel-PAGP. There should be any sort of downtime on the current link while adding another link to it.
How do i add another link with etherchannel -PAGP with out having downtime on the current link?  could you please guide me on this?
    Thanks
    Shibu

    Shibu,
Jon is 100% correct, that since this is not already and Etherchannel, there will be downtime, but it should be minimal. Now, what you could do, is depending on your physical topology, you should connect these two switches together with a GigbitEthernet link in the meatnime, it will be blocked by spanning tree (if it's a L2 port), since the 10G link will be give priority by default. Then you could afford downtime on the 10 gig link, while you create an etherchannel, If these two links are L2, you could configure UplinkFast, so the switchover is VERY fast.
I've done this same setup before when making changes, but it all depends on if you can acutally physically do that. If not, you will have some downtime involved.
You can also, just configure all this on notepad, and copy and paste.

You can have a regular dual-NIC config for redundancy.

  • Catalyst 2960 Plus Series SI stack problems with a SMC8024L2

    Hi,
I am trying to stack a SMC8024L2 with CISCO 2960. Reading forum topics seems that additional commands are needed for the CISCO... Would someone know what needs to be performed?
Actual symptoms are that SMC looses its IP after several minutes connected. Once that is reseted to fabric values and reprogrammed, it works fine for several minutes, but suddenly is not reachable by web, AND it is not foundable by Nettools.
    Configuration:
    CISCOROUTER/SONICWALL/CISCOSWITCH-SMCSWITCH
    Thanks in advance...!

Well it probably wouldn't be confusing if I could find a clear set of ground rules.  The documentation mentions "FlexStack protocol", but the discussions seem to indicate that this is a control plane protocol. Do the stacking modules operate as ethernet bridges when making forwarding decisions like any other switch port?  If the answer is yes then at least I understand the principal of operation.  But now if you throw multi-chassis etherchannel uplinks into the mix divining general layer 2 paths becomes a little murky.
Although now that I look at it, using this cabling has an advantage over a straight ring topology.  Once a frame hits the stack it is never more than 2 hops away from it's destination.  With daisy-chained switches it could be up to 4 hops.  This is of course assuming standard 802.1d-like forwarding.  This may be an invalid assumption.  I don't see any way to get spanning tree info for the stack ports.
(EDIT:  standard ring topology would also have a maximum of 2 hops to any switch, not 4)

  • Replacing Stacked 24 port 2960s with 48 port

    same  IOS version
    WS-C2960S-24PS-L
    for
    WS-C2960S-48LPS-L
Whats the best way to do this without powering down the stack.
    thanks

Let us presume that your 24-port is switch 3 in the stack.  So you can remove the configuration of the 24 port by using this command:
    config t
    no switch 3 provision WS-C2960S-24PS
    switch 3 provision WS-C2960S-48LPS
<You can start configuring your ports EVEN BEFORE you connect the 48-port switch to your stack>

  • How to Uplink Stacked C2960S to C3560X

I'm trying to decide between uplinking a pair of stacked C2960S switches that are part of a Hyper-V cluster environment to a C3560X switch OR just connect the Hyper-V hosts directly to the C3560X.
Here's some background of the environment:
    - Hyper-V 2012 R2 environment
    - Storage Network:
        - Two clustered Equallogics (8 eth connections each -- 4 active/4 passive) connected to the stacked C2960S
        - 4 Hyper-V hosts, each with quad NICs for iSCSI traffic connected to the stacked C2960S
    - LAN Network
       - 4 Hyper-V hosts, each with an additional quad NIC for LAN traffic (Management, cluster, migration, public)  ==> to be connected to the rest of the LAN (directly to 3560X or through C2960S)
Originally I had considered connecting the Hyper-V hosts' LAN NICs directly to the C3560X. That would take 16 of the 48 ports (4 NICs X 4 hosts) in the C3560X, which is a core switch and has a bunch of other servers connected to it.
I have been thinking, however, that there's already a fair amount of traffic going through the C3560X and adding, for example, the cluster and VM migration to it may create some congestion. Instead, I've been considering connecting the Hyper-V hosts' LAN ports to the stacked C2960S, isolate the traffic with VLANs, and set up an uplink to the C3560X switch. The benefit of this is that, for example, cluster traffic and VM migration traffic would be handled in the C2960S, which have a smaller traffic load than the C3560X.
    What implementation is more efficient?
Furthermore, if I were to uplink the C2960S switches to the C3560X, what is the best way to achieve this given the characteristics of the switches?
The complete model number for the C2960S is WS-2960S-48TS-L and for the C3560X is WS-C3560X-48T-S. There are SFP ports in the C2960S, but not in the C3560X. Is my best option here to team a couple of the interfaces on each type of switch and uplink that way?
Attached is a drawing with both options roughly outlined.
Thank you in advance for any recommendations.

Sorry if I re-iterate one of my last questions, but I want to make sure I understand your last statement.
Here's the current sh vlan in the 3560 (vlans names changed for privacy)
    VLAN Name                             Status    Ports
    1    default                          active    Gi0/1, Gi0/4, Gi0/6, Gi0/7
                                                    Gi0/8, Gi0/9, Gi0/10, Gi0/11
                                                    Gi0/12, Gi0/13, Gi0/14, Gi0/15
                                                    Gi0/16, Gi0/17, Gi0/18, Gi0/19
                                                    Gi0/20, Gi0/24, Gi0/25, Gi0/26
                                                    Gi0/27, Gi0/28, Gi0/30, Gi0/31
                                                    Gi0/32, Gi0/33, Gi0/34, Gi0/35
                                                    Gi0/36, Gi0/37, Gi0/38, Gi0/39
                                                    Gi0/40, Gi0/41, Gi0/42, Gi0/43
                                                    Gi0/44, Gi0/45, Gi0/46, Gi0/47
                                                    Po1, Po2
    6    Mickey                              active    Gi0/23
    7    Minnie                    active
    8    Donald                           active
    9    Pluto                            active
So as you can see there are some VLANs configured on the 3560, but only one of the ports is tagged. The 3825 is doing most of the heavy lifting for those VLANs.
If I were to configure the 3560 to do inter-VLAN routing for the Hyper-V environment VLANs, I'd configure, say, interfaces Gi0/46, Gi0/47 with VLANs for management and public cluster traffic. But would configuring the 3560 to do L3 switching/routing for these vlans affect the existing ones (e.g. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Pluto)?
Furthermore, what would happen with the traffic going through VLAN1? Some of the servers connected in those interfaces will need to communicate with the VMs in the Hyper-V environment which would be coming on VLANs other than VLAN1.

  • ASA 5580 with EtherChannel 20Gbs, Does the Failover link must match the same Speed?

    Hello,
I have an ASA 5580, I am plannning on setting two EtherChannels (inside and outside), each channel will include two TenGigabit interfaces.
My questions is that if the links that I am gonig to use for the failover and link, should also be 20Gbs each, or it is ok to use 10Gbs for each link?
According to the Configuration guide 8.4
Use the following failover interface speed guidelines for the ASAs:
    • Cisco ASA 5510
    – Stateful link speed can be 100 Mbps, even though the data interface can operate at 1 Gigabit due
    to the CPU speed limitation.
    • Cisco ASA 5520/5540/5550
    – Stateful link speed should match the fastest data link.
    • Cisco ASA 5580/5585
    – Use only non-management 1 Gigabit ports for the stateful link because management ports have
lower performance and cannot meet the performance requirement for Stateful Failover.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
I have 2x ASA5580-20 with 8x1GE interfaces and additional 2x 10GE interfaces each. Software version running is v8.4.4.1.
I am planning to use them in multiple context (active/active) transparent mode. Taking into account the FW performance of 5Gbps real-world traffic per ASA5580-20, which on the following interface configurations would make the most sense?
    Option 1:
    2x10GE = 20GE Etherchannel for Data
    1x1GE LAN Failover
    1x1GE STATE Failover
    Option 2:
    1x 10GE Data
    1x 10GE LAN & STATE Failover
    Option 3:
    2x10GE = 20GE Etherchannel for Data
    4x1GE = 4GE Etherchannel for LAN/STATE Failover (possibly up to 8x1GE)
(etherchannel for LAN/STATE Failover actually does not make much sense, since only one interface wll be used anyway)
    Option 4:
    1x10GE LAN & STATE Failover
    8x1GE = 8 GE Etherchannel for Data
I have read several guides (e.g. link1, link2, link3). Some state that 1GE Failover interfaces would suffice for the ASA5580, others recommend a link as fast as the data link. Almost none of them account for higher bandwidth etherchannels.
What is recommended in this case? Both Firewalls will be connected to one VSS Switch Pair, so it would make sense to cross-connect with at least 2 links on each VSS member.
The ASA does not support connecting an EtherChannel to a switch stack. If the ASA EtherChannel is connected cross stack, and if the Master switch is powered down, then the EtherChannel connected to the remaining switch will not come up. (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa84/configuration/guide/interface_start.html)
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

  • Stacking 2960S

I have checked over documents on cisco.com but still unclear.
We would like to start stacking some 2960S switches. We currently have one 2960S in production now, and are ready to create the stack with a second 2960S. A few questions regarding this:
Does the current 2960S we have in production need to be powered off when we insert the stack module? Or is it hot swappable?
Is there any loss of network connectivity when you create the stack (plugging the second one into the production one)? Just trying to do this during normal business hours if possible.
Is it necessary to set the production one as a master ahead of time?  Command I would use: switch 1 priority 14 (anything higher than 1 I was told would make it the master)
Is it necessary to have all switches on the same firmware?
    Thanks.

    1.  No the current one does not have to be powered off .
    2.  The new one does have to be powered off , then connect the stack cables and then power on. To have a succssful addition make sure the new switch has the same code as the existing .
    3.  Yes its a good idea to make current switch master ahead of time.
