Upload File in servlet

hi , i upload a file in jsp and in the servlet i want to read the contents of the file not store it.
can u provide me with a simple basic code to do this.
i dont want to use any 3rd party classes for this purpose.
THanks

why no 3rd party stuff? It'll make it a whole lot easier. See, if we give you any code, of course, that would be "3rd party" If you want to do it yourself, then you should go look for the RFC on file upload and maybe get a network packet sniffer app and look at what the browser sends when it submits a file upload form.

  • Change upload file name with com.oreilly.servlet.MultipartRequest to handle the file upload

    1. when use com.oreilly.servlet.MultipartRequest to handle the file upload, can I change the upload file name .
    2. how com.oreilly.servlet.MultipartReques handle file upload? do it change to byte ?
    what  different?  if I use the following method?
       File uploadedFile = (File) mp.getFile("filename");
                   FileOutputStream fos = new FileOutputStream(filename);
                    byte[] uploadedFileBuf = new byte[(int) uploadedFile.length()];
                   fos.write(data);
                 fos.close();

    My questions are
    1) when use oreilly package to do file upload , it looks like i line of code is enough to store the upload file in the
    file direction.
    MultipartRequest multi =
            new MultipartRequest(request, dirName, 10*1024*1024); // 10MB
    why some example still use FileOutputStream?
    outs = new FileOutputStream(UPLOADDIR+fileName);
        filePart.writeTo(outs);
       outs.flush();
      outs.close();
    2) can I rename the file name when I use oreilly package?

  • How to get the complete path name when uploading a file from servlet

    Hi,
    I write a servlet to upload a file from html page
    <intput type=file name=fileupload>I am using
    import org.apache.commons.fileupload.to upload file. i want to get the all fields in the form and file name and content of the file also.
    It give the file name only
    String filename= fileItem.getName();
    o/p krish.jpgBut i want complete path naem like
    d:/krishna/images/funny/krish.jpgI serach the API org.apache.commons.fileupload.*
    But i did nt find the method to get it.
    plz help me , which api or method to use here..

    Krishna_Rao_chintu wrote:
    But i need path and have to do some calculations on it.No, you don't. If you have requirements which say you do then the requirements are wrong. You couldn't do anything useful with the path on the client system even if you could get it.
    is there any alternatives in java
    I need path and have to calculate MD5, Presumably you need to calculate MD5 on the contents of the file and not on the name of the file.
    and convert the file to binary format.... etc oprations on itSorry, "convert a file to binary format" is basically meaningless.
    but we can get the content of the file using
    byte [] get()/ getString() methods
    If i get content is there any performance degrades?
    ie if the content is lengthy is it take more time?Take more time than what? Degrading performance from what? It's certainly true that it would be quicker to not upload the file, but that's a pointless comparison. If you have some other process to compare with, let us know what it would be.

  • Uploading File To MySQL from HTML form via Servlet

    Hello all !
    I hope this is better place to ask.
    I'm working on simple Servlet/Jsp application trying to hold to MVC pattern and got stuck on uploading file to MySQL db.
    Here's what I'm trying to accomplish:
    1) client submits a JPEG image via a simple html form on a webpage.
    2) JPEG is put into a database table, column field of type BLOB.
    3) Servlet processes the request, gets a connection to the db and inserts the image into the table.
    4) after that user is able to retrieve an image from db and display it in JSP page.
    This is pretty much the same task Angela was trying to do here:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=667597&messageID=3905449
    I could use her snippets if i knew what is what and decided to figure out this myself. Aftet some investigation i found out that i need to import org.apache.commons.fileupload.*;which i found here: http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/fileupload/
    what am i driving at ?
    -----------------------1-----------------------
    After first line of code
    boolean isPart = FileUpload.isMultipartContent(request);netBeans 5.5 beta2 with bundled Tomcat 5.5.17 underlines this with warning saying that
    org.apache.commons.fileupload.FileUploadBase
    has been depreceted
    is it a reason for concern ?
    -----------------------2-----------------------
    Is it actually good idea to store images in db as blob ?
    what about large ammounts of text ?
    thank you
    -Dominik

    is it a reason for concern ?Yes.
    You should take a look at the method in the documentation and find out exact reason for depricating it.
    If it is depricated becouse they going to remove it in the future you should use the new alternative method becouse if you use the old method your app will not work in the future releases of the API.
    If it is depricated becouse it is not safe to use the method you should clearly understand the risks involved in using the method and see if that can give you any trouble in your project.
    -----------------------2-----------------------
    Is it actually good idea to store images in db as
    blob ?I think that it is ths best option available when you want to store binary data
    what about large ammounts of text ?You can use clob columns.
    By the way when you store files in the database its better you put some extra columns to store the file name and file type(mime) becouse you cant directly detect those things later by just looking at the data of the file.

  • Name of uploaded file (BLOB) in Servlet

    Hi,
    I'm trying to save into DB any file I want throw servlet via POST request.
    Is there any way how to get the name of uploaded file from posted information (from posted file).
    Then I save this file as BLOB into DB.
    Can you help me with getting the file name???
    Because I would like to save the name also into DB...
    Thanks Jan

    Jason Hunter of Servlet fame and fortune has had a general servlet framework extension available for quite a while now. This has code which supports many common operations, including handling multipart-file upload.
    See http://www.servlets.com/cos/index.html#classes and more specifically http://www.servlets.com/cos/javadoc/com/oreilly/servlet/MultipartRequest.html
    The code is available, so you should be able to take a peek and see how he handles this issue, as an example.

    The Apache Commons project has a couple of components that may help. Check out the net or vfs components:
    http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/components.html
    Also look on the SourceForge site for any Java FTP projects that you could use.

    User needs to browse file on his desktop and upload file using browse button. This file should then be uploaded to the server. I am using javascript in the front end and servlet in the back.

    Jakarta Commons FileUpload is the standard way of doing the file uploading these days. You can find source, binaries and documentation at the Jakarta Site http://jakarta.apache.org/ . The Commons has a number of subprojects, so start with the Commons libraries, then find FileUpload.

    5 - performance

    Hello i had exactly the same error, but not with file upload.
    I'm sure you have in your application lib directory to jars which aren't compatible to each other.
    And the problem occured between my myfaces and tomahawk jars .
    See this page:
    http://wiki.apache.org/myfaces/CompatibilityMatrix
    It tells you which myfaces and tomahawk jars you can use together.
    Hope it can help.

  • How to specify the directory in which we want to store the uploaded files

    Hello !!
    I am using apache commonfile upload for uploading my files.I followed the user guide and tried to run a program,but my problem is I am not able to understand as to how to mention the directory in which the uploaded file will be saved..My code is given below :
    package r;
    import javax.servlet.*;
    import javax.servlet.http.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import org.apache.commons.fileupload.*;
    import org.apache.commons.fileupload.servlet.*;
    import org.apache.commons.fileupload.disk.*;
    import org.apache.commons.io.*;
    import java.lang.Exception;
    public class fileupload extends HttpServlet
         public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request,HttpServletResponse response)throws IOException,ServletException
                   // Check that we have a file upload request
                  boolean isMultipart = ServletFileUpload.isMultipartContent(request);
                 System.out.println(isMultipart);
                 if (ServletFileUpload.isMultipartContent(request))
                 // Create a factory for disk-based file items
                   FileItemFactory factory = new DiskFileItemFactory();
                   // Create a new file upload handler
                   ServletFileUpload upload = new ServletFileUpload(factory);
                   // Parse the request
                   try {
                               List items= upload.parseRequest(request);
                             Iterator iter = items.iterator();
                             while (iter.hasNext())
                                   FileItem item = (FileItem) iter.next();
                                 if (item.isFormField()) //NORMAL FORM FIELD
                                 String name = item.getFieldName();
                                  String value = item.getString();
                                  System.out.println(value);
                                  else
                                 String fileName = item.getName();
                                 System.out.println(fileName);
                                    String contentType = item.getContentType();
                                  File saveTo = new File("/info/upload_files/myFile.jpeg");
                             try
                                       item.write(saveTo);
                                       System.out.println("File written" );
                             catch(Exception e)
                                         System.out.println("File not written");
                                   // InputStream fs= item.getInputStream();
                                   fileName = FilenameUtils.getName(fileName);
                                    System.out.println(fileName);
                        }//end of try
              catch (Exception e) { }
         public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request,HttpServletResponse response)throws ServletException,IOException
                 doGet(request,response);
    The problem is that the control doesn't reach the try statement and I get " File not written" on the console because it enters catch everytime..Please tell me how the path to the directory should be given...Rest of the code is working fine

    No, the problem is that when an Exception is thrown, you ignore it completely and throw away all the information associated with it. That leaves you to guess at what the problem is. So instead of answering your guess at a good question, I'm going to suggest that in all of your catch blocks you put this code:e.printStackTrace();Then you can look at the output in the log file and see what the problem is. Start from there.

    The informations are really not much to have an idea about the problem.
    The problem can be located in the fm that calls the file because is trying to search the file on a system where there are some kind of problems in the communication between the systems involved to read and pass the file. Did u map the file name with logical filenames ? Very strange problem. Can you browse in the server where the file is located . Is it on your pc ?
    Or, there is some problem in the datas provided, but this problem should arise more when you save than when you just press to load.
    With this kind of imformations is very hard to have an idea. You need to debug to see what s going on

  • How to upload file to server physical directory

    Dear Sir,
    My Software Details:
    Oracle9i Release 1
    Oracle9iAS 1.0.2.2.2
    Solaris 8
    I have a web application developed using PL/SQL.
    How do i upload a file from user to a server physical directory through Oracle9iAS without storing in database?
    I can do this if file is uploaded to a 9ias upload table.
    But i'm looking for solution on uploading file straight to the physical server directory.
    Please advise.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Jap Boon Churn

    Hi Jap,
    You won't be able to do this with modplsql if that is what you are asking. modplsql only uploads file into the database.
    With that said, however, you can write your own CGI/Servlet/Perl program that does the uploading of files into the server physical directory. In your program, you will need to handle HTTP POST requests so that you can parse out the file contents and write it out onto the file system.
    I am sure there is already some CGI/Servlet/Perl program out there that does this. If you search on Google, you should be able to find some and modify it to your needs. Hope that helps. Thanks.
    Eric.

  • Fileaccess.httpUploadBean doesn't upload file in Jdevelper 9.0.3

    Hi,
    I am using Jdevelper 9.0.3 to develop a jsp Based File Upload Utility.
    I have attached Liberary "JSP RUNTIME" which reffers to "ojsp.jar","ojsputil.jar","oc4j.jar","servlet.jar","ojc.jar".
    while running the code for file upload, file doesn't get uploaded. I am not getting any exceptions too.
    But the same pease of code with same liberary "JSP RUNTIME" is working absolutly fine(Uploading File), when i am running it using Jdeveloper10.1.2, and This is Strange to me.Actualy i need to use Jdeveloper9.0.3 only.Please let me know if any patch is required to apply in Jdeveloper9.0.3.
