URGENT: Passing system properties to individual thread processes
Hi:
I'm trying to invoke multiple java Servers from a Controller class to enable starting all the servers in a single JVM. The code is shown below:
public class Controller {
/** Creates new Controller */
public Controller() {
* @param args the command line arguments
public static void main(String args[]) {
(new Thread(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
ChatServerRMI.Server.main(null);
})).start();
(new Thread(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
LoginService.LoginServerBaseImpl.main(null);
})).start();
However I want to pass system properties/arguments to each main() call. Can someone please explain me how this can be done.....ur help will be appreciated with D$s!
Thanks in advance.
If by "system properties" you mean the system properties accessible by System.getProperty("user.dir") and the like, you don't have to do anything to make those available to the threads. They are global and any piece of code can access them.
If you want to pass arguments to the various "main" methods as if they had been typed at the command line, you just make an array of strings with those arguments and use it as the parameter. For example:ChatServerRMI.Server.main(new String[] {"-port" "2023"});And if you don't want to pass any parameters, do it like this:String[] nothing = new String[0];
LoginService.LoginServerBaseImpl.main(nothing);

WLS 6.0 java.system.properties
Our WLS 5.1 weblogic.properties file contained a number of properties of the
following form:
java.system.property.foo=bar
These properties could be access using System.getProperty().
Now that WLS 6.0 uses config.xml instead of weblogic.properties what should
we do with the java.system.property declarations? Should they be setup
using a startup class?
-AndrewWhen you start WebLogic, you can pass system properties via the command
line:
java ... -Djava.system.property.foo=bar weblogic.Server
Then you can call System.getProperty("java.system.property.foo")

Can i get the system properties(urgent)
Sir
i want to get the following properties of the system
1.What type of operating system install e.g win Xp or 98
2.How many hard disk are in the system
OR how many Partions of the system
3.Search the particular folder in the computer.
i study the System Class but these types of information
not available.Please Help me with Example.Java Developer's Almanac 1.4:
// Get all system properties
Properties props = System.getProperties();
// Enumerate all system properties
Enumeration enum = props.propertyNames();
while(enum.hasMoreElements())
// Get property name
String propName = (String)enum.nextElement();
// Get property value
String propValue = (String)props.get(propName);
What's there, is there, what isn't, isn't. I believe there are many clues to what operating system you're on.

Specifying system properties/security manager for OC4J
I have a couple of related questions regarding OC4J/orion.jar:
1. Generically, how can we specify system properties to orion.jar? Being an executable JAR, simply using -D does not work.
2. Specifically, I need to launch the OC4J app server with a Java security manager (with associated security policies, etc.) Java's way of doing this is via -Djava.security.manager=... but this does not work with executable JARs it seems. I tried specifying these parameters via -D and I got a security exception:
Exception in thread "main" java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.util.PropertyP
rmission java.protocol.handler.pkgs write)
at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(Unknown Source)
at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.System.setProperty(Unknown Source)
at com.evermind.server.ApplicationServer.initProtocolHandlers(ApplicationServer.java:652)
at com.evermind.server.ApplicationServer.launchCommandline(ApplicationServer.java:319)
at com.evermind.server.ApplicationServer.main(ApplicationServer.java:314)
So, how do I install the Java security manager with orion.jar? Is there any other way to specify system properties to this, or is there any other way to install the Java security manager for OC4J?
Any help much appreciated.
..HrishiThanks, that seemed to work. However it seems that spawned another little problem. I was using the -Xbootclasspath/a option while firing up orion.jar because I needed to append something to OC4J's default classpath (that is specified in orion.jar's Manifest). Now, when I start OC4J with the -D options for the security policy, it seems to ignore the -Xbootclasspath argument. I have not yet been able to confirm this fact, but based on the ClassNotFoundError I'm running into, that does seem to be the problem.
So I guess my question is, could specifying the -D options to the executable JAR cause it to ignore any other options you may be passing to it (such as -Xbootclasspath)? Is there any sequence in which these args need to be passed?
Thanks.
..Hrishi
Hi,
You can try this :
- Check if you have a file java2.policy in <OC4J_HOME>\config\policy and check if the permission java.util.PropertyPermission "read,write" is granted to <OC4J_HOME>.
if there is no file, you can create one based on <JAVA_HOME>\lib\security\java.policy and grant the approriate privileges.
- Launch OC4J :
java -Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=<OC4J_HOME>/config/java2.policy -jar orion.jar
OR java -Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=<PATH_TO_FILE_POLICY>/<YOUR_FILE>.policy -jar orion.jar

TimeOut for Individual Threads in ExecutorService
Hello all,
I am using a FixedThreadPool to execute a number of individual jobs. The jobs are using an external chemistry library (CDK) to calculate various properties on a set of molecules. The problem is that for a small number of the molecules, this calculation does not terminate in a reasonable time. I'm not sure if it is a bug with the program or a property of the algorithm they are using or what. The problem is that once thread pool starts a number of these non-terminating jobs equal to the max pools, the entire pool is locked up on these non-terminating calculations, meaning the program comes to a standstill.
So what I need to do is terminate the jobs if they take longer than a TimeOut value. There doesn't seem to be a way to do this with the concurrency API - you can terminate the entire ExecutorService if it runs for too long, but not on an individual thread level, from what I can see. So how would I go about doing this?
Cheers,
nfitzgerald
String nstmt = new String("SELECT mol_id FROM " + infotablename + " WHERE XLogP IS NULL ORDER BY mol_id DESC");
PreparedStatement stmt = con.prepareStatement(nstmt, ResultSet.TYPE_FORWARD_ONLY,
ResultSet.CONCUR_READ_ONLY);
ResultSet rs = stmt
.executeQuery();
ExecutorService pool = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(workers);
while (rs.next()) {
String mol_id = rs.getString("mol_id");
pool.submit(new CalculationHandler(hostname, user, password, infotable, structable, mol_id));
System.out.println("All Submitted.");
pool.shutdown();
pool.awaitTermination(36000, TimeUnit.SECONDS);
pool.shutdownNow();Is there anything wrong with doing it this way:
public class TimeOutWrapper implements Runnable {
Runnable runnable;
long timeout;
public TimeOutWrapper(Runnable runnable, long timeout){
this.runnable = runnable;
this.timeout = timeout;
public void run(){
Thread thread = new Thread(runnable);
thread.start();
//check every .1 second to see if it is done, return if done
for(int i = 0; i < (timeout/1000); i++){
try {
Thread.sleep(1000);
} catch (InterruptedException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
if(!thread.isAlive()){
return;
//if it makes it the whole timeout
thread.interrupt();
return;
}And then setting up the pool like this:
ExecutorService pool = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(workers);
String mol_id = rs.getString("mol_id");
TimeOutWrapper timeOutJob = new TimeOutWrapper(new SomeRunnable(args), 30000);
pool.submit(timeOutJob);Is this a "bad" way of doing it? Am I breaking some law here, or is this a valid work-around?

Reading locale system properties like set-variables of a windows Client
Hello,
is there a possibility to read locale system properties like set-variables of a windows Client?
We want to read path-Info and user-info. Can I perhaps user javascript?
Best regards
Oliver ProdingerHi Oliver,
This code will work (assuming the client approves running of ActiveX)
<html>
<script>
var shell = new ActiveXObject("WScript.Shell");
var env = shell.Environment("process");
alert(env("COMPUTERNAME"));
alert(env("USERNAME"));
</script>
</html>
You can't really run it from WD, but what you can do is run this code from a portal component (DynPage/JspDynPage) that is running in the same page as your WD application and pass data by using portal eventing.
The portal component iview can have size of 1 pixel so it won't be seen...

See Java System properties using WebLogic Server console
hi
If I deploy "systempropertiesweb.war" [1] on WebLogic Server I can see all or individual Java System properties,
e.g. http://localhost:7101/systempropertiesweb/systemproperties?property=java.version results in "java.version = 1.6.0_24"
Is it possible to see the same Java System properties using WebLogic Server Administration Console? If so, how?
( via http://localhost:7101/console )

But, I don't know how to get to this same MBean using the WebLogic Server Administration Console (if possible).

How can I pass an exception from one thread to another thread
If I create a new class, that will extends the class Thread, the methode run() can not be use with the statement Throws Exeption .
The question now: Is there any possibility to pass an exception from one thread to another thread?
Thx.It really depends on what you want to do with your exception. Is there some sort of global handler that will process the exceptions in some meaningful way? Unless you have that, there's not much point in throwing an exception in a thread, unless you simply want the stack trace generated.
Presuming that you have a global handler that can catch exceptions, nest your Exception subclass inside a RuntimeException:
public class NestedRuntimeException extends RuntimeException
private final m_nestedException;
public NestedRuntimeException(final Exception originalException)
super("An exception occurred with message: " + originalException.getMessage());
m_nestedException;
public Exception getNestedException()
return m_nestedException;
}Your global handler can catch the NestedRuntimeException or be supplied it to process by the thread group. -
Passing a variable from one thread to another
Hi. I'm trying to produce a chat program in Java but need to pass a variable between two threads. I have included a snipet of the code.
import java.io.*;
import java.net.*;
class IndividualConnection extends Thread
public Socket clientSocket;
String userName = "";
public IndividualConnection(Socket connectingSocket)
clientSocket = connectingSocket;
public login(String name)
userName = name;
public void messageUser(Socket socket, String msg)
try
Socket newSocket = new Socket("192.168.0.162",5163);
DataOutputStream outToServer = new DataOutputStream(socket.getOutputStream());
outToServer.writeBytes(msg + '\n');
catch(Exception e)
System.out.println("The connection with the client has been closed.");
this.stop();
public void run()
Socket global = clientSocket;
// etc etc
A number of threads are created based on code similar to the above. Each thread communicates to a different client on the chat program. However, I want to be able to send messages between the clients.
Each thread has a method called messageUser(Socket socket, String msg). I should (hopefully) be able to send a message to anyone using the prog if I can access their socket. The problem is that the socket objects for each client is held in the clients own thread. I have tried writing some code to find the Socket object in another thread but to no success. The code I am trying is shown below.
public Socket findContact(String name)
ThreadGroup currentGroup = Thread.currentThread().getThreadGroup();
int numThreads = currentGroup.activeCount();
Thread[] listOfThreads = new Thread[numThreads];
currentGroup.enumerate(listOfThreads);
for (int i = 0; i < numThreads; i++)
String threadName = listOfThreads.getName();
if (threadName.compareTo(name) == 0)
// Socket tempSocket = threadName[i].getClass().getField(clientSocket);
return tempSocket;
The line I have commented out does not work. Please could someone tell me how to carry out this task. I have spent many hours trying to solve this but am not able to. The chat server is nearly complete now. I just need to find a way of obtaining another threads socket.
I hope the problem is comprehensible. I have found it difficult to explain clearly. Many thanks.Really simple, inelegant solution:
class MyThread extends Thread {
Socket socket;
MyThread( Socket s ) { socket = s; }
public Socket getSocket() { return socket; }
}Better: create a master object that includes an array
of sockets. Each time you create a Thread, update the
master object's list of sockets with a reference to
each Thread's socket. Under the current memory model, the socket field should be declared volatile. The proposed new memory model will guarantee that this will work if the socket field is declared final.

Passing MSI properties causes itunessetup to fail
Trying to install latest iTunes 11.0.2.26
Installing on Windows 7 x86 SP1 all updates applied.
Here is the behavior I've noticed.
If trying to run iTunesSetup.exe via command line and you pass any MSI PROPERTY arguments to the setup it will fail.
It always fails at the exact same spot which is the Apple Mobile Device Service. It will fail to start with error code 1920. This happens regardless if I am running as an Administrator account, or even logged in as the actual local administrator. I have confirmed the problem still happens even when trying to call the EXE from an elevated command prompt. UAC is also already disabled.
The following command will work if you do not pass PROPERTY elements to the installer.
iTunesSetup.exe /q
However if you attempt to use the following command the install will fail.
iTunesSetup.exe /qb DESKTOP_SHORTCUTS=0
Below is a result of running logging during the install using argument

How to set JVM system properties in Oracle Portal ??
Hello Guys,
I want to set javax.net.ssl.trustStore="path to keystore" ,JVM system properties on oracle portal,
Like i want to configure my keystore with oracle portal so that my application can make a success full connection with back end using https.
i read the following note from one of the Oracle tech note,which says that
It is important that this system property is passed as a command line option to Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE (OC4J). Setting the property in oc4j.properties will not help because the system property is read first before OC4J reads this file. Therefore, it is best to modify the <java-option> line in the OC4J_portal section of ORACLE_HOME/opmn/conf/opmn.xml.
So, i made the required changes to OC4J_portal section of opmn.xml file as below
added value is shown in bold
<data id="java-options" value="-server -Xrs -Djava.security.policy=C:\oracle\OraPortal\j2ee\OC4J_Portal\config\java2.policy -Djava.awt.headless=true -Xmx256m -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStrore=C:\keystore1 -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStrorePassword=password1"/>
Even after making these changes, my application not able to make connection using https.
Could u guys explain me, what things are going wrong or somethings else i need to do to make it work.
Any thoughts would be highly appreciated.
Thanks

RAM not showing up in system properties
I have 3GB installed on my OLD Windows XP
I have noticed lately that when I checked my System Properties it only says 2GB.
But HWINFO32 shows 3GB
I ran memtest86 to see if my ram was failing but it passed.
Any ideas on why it only shows 2GB.
I have an Nvidia 9800 1024MB graphics card if for some reason that is subtracting from my total.
Thanks: GLennI have saved the DXDIAG file and uploaded it.
Does anyone think I should replace the CMOS battery ?
I have not had any problems with my time not working or it turning off and no warnings ?
Also, I have ordered 4 new 1GB Ram sticks so they are all the same speed.
My 2 512's are the slowest and the new ones will be faster then the 2 1GB ones I have there now.
I will pick up a can of air and clean out the unit too since its been over a year since I dusted it off.
Thanks: GLenn
I will paste the info below too.

Properties with special characters are not transfered to system properties
A property which contains a special character like % or (o with 2 dots above) will not passed to system properties in java 1.5.0_16.
This was working with java 1.5.0_06.
Example
Jnlp:
<property name="test.fail" value="Mller"/>
<property name="test.works" value="Moller"/>java:
System.getProperty("test.fail") = null
System.getProperty("test.works") = "Moller"The Jnlp is correct encoded in UTF-8
Are there any ideas?
regards<property name="test.fail" value="M%ller"/>

How can I pass environment variables to the child process?
How can I pass environment variables to the child process? This is what I tried and it didn't work.
static public void main (String[] args) throws Exception {
ProcessBuilder b = new ProcessBuilder("java", "-cp", ".", "Child");
Map<String, String> map = b.environment();
map.put("custom.property", "my value");
b.redirectErrorStream(true);
Process p = b.start();
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader (new InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
String line = null;
while (null != (line = reader.readLine())) {
System.out.println(line);
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("The value of custom.property is : " + System.getProperty("custom.property"));
}and the result is:
The value of custom.property is : nullComplete test:
static public void main (String[] args) throws Exception {
ProcessBuilder b = new ProcessBuilder("java", "-Dcustom.property=my property value", "-cp", ".", "Child");
Map<String, String> map = b.environment();
map.put("custom.property", "my environment value");

String line = null;

System.properties (what is the scope in memory)
Does each JVM have it's own System properties? Hence calls from one JVM System.getProperty() or System.setProperty() should be within each individual JVM? Also I need to know this so that I can gurantee that using the System properties for private information won't be accessed by anyone else on the system... Any input?
System properties are unique for each VM, they are therefore visible to all code running in the VM.
This seems like a good thing to use for storing things like passwords because of the global visibility however using the System properties for storing such things has to be considered as being insecure.
System properties should be regarded as a place to read data from that is relevant for either the Java runtime environment or for setting component specific properties, XML Parsers make use of this for example. Using System properties as an in memory database is neither secure nor sensible. Careless selection of keys for the properties you wish to store can have unexpected results if you accidentally overwrite a property that is used for other purposes.
I would use a separate Properties instance that has nothing to do with the System properties and I would also recommend the encryption of sensitive data like passwords.
