Urxvt true transparency troubles (titlebar goes transparent too)

I'm running Openbox/GNOME under XGL/Xcompmgr with ATI's fglrx drivers.  I'm trying to enable true transparency for urxvt, but for some reason when I set the transparency in ~/.Xdefaults the entire window (including titlebar) become transparent. Furthermore, the titlebar becomes nearly invisible even though the terminal window is almost opaque.
From what I've seen in screenshots, urxvt is supposed to make only the terminal portion of the window transparent.  Has anyone encountered the same problem?  Is there a workaround?
Xcompmgr flags:
xcompmgr -c -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55
Pertinent ~/.Xdefaults settings:
urxvt*background: rgba:0000/0000/0000/eeee
urxvt*fading: 10
urxvt*shading: 30
urxvt*tintColor: grey
urxvt*depth: 32
urxvt*inheritPixmap: true
Thanks for any advice!

I've done a lot of searching, both in the Arch forums and out of them, and I can't really find anything related to this.  I can find a bunch of posts about enabling transparency, but that's not the issue I'm having.
This issue might be due to the convergence of several issues among xcompmgr, urxvt, and awesome. If there is a thread lurking around somewhere that I missed, I can't find it.

• InDesign Help - eps file text going transparent.

I am building a business card for a client and they provided me with an .eps logo. In the logo there is a white script font along the bottom of it with their saying. I place this into inDesign and everything looks fine until i .pdf the file and the text goes transparent so only the drop shadows on the letters are visible.
- I have tried going into the eps and the text is already converted to curves so it can't be a font problem.
- I changed the color of the text from white to 1% black thinking maybe the eps was dropping the color but i get the same results, even when i changed it to a hot pink as a test (same problem just a transparent pink).
- I tried saving the file as an .ai file and bringing it in and I get the same problem.
All of us in the art room have never seen this from the new CS3 lineup before and we are stumped. If you can come up with any suggestions on how to solve this it would be appreciated, The client needs their cards soon and I can't give them this without that line of script.

The white is set to overprint. Open it in Illustrator and fix it. While
you're at it resave it as a AI or PDF.

• HT3986 when starting up in windows the screen resolution is too large ,i then restart in windows and resolution goes back too normal

When starting up windows from mac the resolution is too large, i then restart in windows and the resolution goes back too normal. How do i fix this?

Having the same issue here....a quick fix is to just minimize the window, and immediately maximize it.  It will now fit the screen.  Trouble is, after you close it, you'll have to do it again when you re-start itunes.  The good news is it takes all of about 2 seconds.  Apple should fix this.  Should.

• Urxvt in the background is not transparent

Hello everyone,
I'm using Openbox and urxvt terminal and I was experimenting with running one urxvt pseudo-transparent in the background like in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ope … background. So I created new name "RootURxvt" in my .Xdefaults file:
RootURxvt.scrollBar: false
RootURxvt.transparent: true
RootURxvt.geometry: 80x24
the rest of my .Xdefaults reagarding urxvt:
URxvt.buffered: true
URxvt.geometry: 85x24
URxvt.transparent: false
URxvt.background: black
URxvt.foreground: gray90
URxvt.cursorColor: green
URxvt.underlineColor: yellow
URxvt.scrollstyle: plain
URxvt.secondaryScroll: true
URxvt.font: -*-fixed-medium-*-*-*-18-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-2
URxvt.boldFont: -*-fixed-bold-*-*-*-18-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-2
URxvt.perl-ext-common: default,tabbed
Then I put the appropriate entry to the .config/openbox/rc.xml
<application name="RootURxvt">
<decor>no</decor>
<focus>yes</focus>
<position>
<x>0</x>
<y>0</y>

<desktop>all</desktop>
<maximized>false</maximized>
<skip_taskbar>true</skip_taskbar>
<layer>below</layer>
</application>
This is the rest of my rc.xml

and hoped that on restart I will have nice pseudo-transparent urxvt on the background...It worked for a while but after another fiddling with rc.xml and .Xdefaults and restarting X it simply stopped working and the "RootURxvt" simply looks like normal urxvt without decor. I browsed the forums, tried "xrdb -merge" and restaring X and looked on the .Xdefaults and rc.xml files million times but I can't find what's wrong.
I could appreciate any help, I'm new to all this X resource stuff, maybe I just made some braindead mistake
Thanks in advance!

Well, I didn't consider it, because I thought that for my application (borderless urxvt terminal embedded in background below all other app windows) the pseudo-transparency aka. "Inherit Pixmap" function implemented in urxvt (I hope I got that right ) could be sufficient.
I also thought that creating a new name "RootURxvt" in the class "URxvt" in the .Xdefaults file would allow me to have two types of urxvt terms running (terminal in the root window and normal "opaque" windowed terminals).
the similar thing is in the post #12 of this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=45382 but only with geometry settings.

• White Transparency over Blue Background is too Blue!

I know this is not strictly a DW question but hey, I'm going to ask it anyway!
Here's an image of what I want to achieve in a Fireworks screenshot:
The content panel is a white fill with transparency but because it's over Blue, it's still Blue!  I know that's how it works but, I want it to be White or possibly, Manilla.  I'll get the transparent panel by using a .png and the vanishing point words will be a background .png as well.  I'm not sure if I will be better off using a gradient image for <body> and another <div> for the words image but perhaps someone can give me a few clues about how to tackle this?
Here's my Photoshop image:
I have asked the question in the PS forum in the hope there might be some color theory trickery to apply but I'm not if that's a runner.
So, any ideas from a coding perspective?  The only thing I can think of (but haven't tried yet) is to add the words image to the body and the content panel?
Martin

Try this:  Borders added to show divisions. You can remove them.

• Transparency troubles

I'm using InDesign CS3 and I encounter the following problem. As soon as I add effects to an object (especially transparency) the whole page where the effect is applied(no matter wether master or else) gets affected: tekst becomes 'thinner', colors turn darker, pictures get less sharp ...
Very odd indeed. And annoying. I get the same problem as I place a psd photoshop with a transparent background file into the document.
Well, I am not a super-expert user but I am either not completely unable. Anyway, I did not have the same problem with C2. Does someone has an explanation/solution, or can help me anyhow?

I have been away for a couples of days. Sorry I didn't reply soon.
I do not have much trouble with text getting darker or alike. Although annoying I can work with it. My concerns refer to the colors of objects / boxes / logo's. As soon as I apply an effect (transparency especially, but also shadows and others...) the colored boxes turn darker and foto's gets 'foggy'. As you know these colors are part of trademarks and cannot be modified at all. It is like having the logo of CocaCola getting purple instead of red...
This does not only appears in ID and PDF. The print is affected as well, to an extent that the same color on facing pages acquires different tonalities.
By searching the forum I have found something promising as 'eliminating Yucky Discolored Box syndrome' and suggestions about flattening and so on. I will try them out.
Dave, thanx a lot. I will look at your suggestion. I hope I'll find the answer there. Excuse me wether i will come back here more often...

• The menu bar goes transparent after 50-60 seconds and my mouse scroll wheel and keyboard wont work unless I click somewhere on the screen

I hope someone can help. I'm using Firefox 31.0.1
The menu bar at the top of the screen is a white transparent color and everything is working fine but after 50 or 60 seconds it changes to completely transparent, I can still read the words file, edit etc. This is where the scroll wheel on the mouse and anything I am typing stops working. Now all I have to do is click somewhere in the window and it works again but only for 50-60 seconds. I have had to click the screen twice since I started typing this because when I look at the screen, everything I have typed is not there because the menu bar went transparent again while I was typing. Its driving me nuts.
I don't remember this being a problem before today, if it was I would surely have noticed. Have I pressed something or clicked on something by accident??
I'm considering throwing the lot out the window, its really annoying, please help lads and ladies.

Hello,
According to your user agent, you are on Firefox 32. If you planned to use Firefox 31 ESR, you can grab a copy here:
* https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/
Out of curiosity, when it turns transparent, is there a "(Not Responding)" appended to the end of the window title? If you don't have the Window title being shown, it might show up if you have window titles shown on your taskbar, or in the task manager (right click on your taskbar and select "Start Task Manager"). If you do see a Not Responding, it could be a slow script on one of the pages you are viewing.
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

• Photo shop files trouble ...transparent no longer transparent

When i send a photoshot file with a transparent background to motion to work on it all seems to go well. But, when i save and go back to FCP the photoshop file is no longer transparent (has a white background). Can someone tell me the fix for this? What am I doing wrong?
thanks,
CC

You should be able to double click on the photoshop file, as a sequence and find the white background layer. Then just delete it or copy and paste the other layers to your working sequence.
You'll find that even when you hide a layer in photoshop final cut will import that layer and just hide it for you.

• .PNG Transparency Trouble in Robohelp

Hi! I'm trying to import a .PNG pic into my Robohelp file.
The background of the .PNG is set to transparent, but when I pull
into Robohelp, the background remains displayed. I've tried other
picture formats that have worked (with diminsihing clarity) but
want to know if I'm doing something wrong with the .PNG file.
Thanks!!

From my limited experience, your problems are related to
incompatibility problems in general, not transparency per se.
PNG comes in many sub-formats, and RoboHelp can deal with
only a few limited sub-set.
For example, we had a lot of problem by using PNGs that have
16 colors. Instead, we need to convert them (back) to 256 colors.
Also, if we compress PNG images, often RoboHelp does not deal
with that very well.
I am telling you all of this, because instead of focusing on
the transparency itself, simply try a slightly different PNG format
(number of colors, compression, etc.) or a different tool.
We have used batch-conversion tools (IrfanView, etc.) with
success for this purpose. It takes a bit of trial and error, but we
established "rules" for PNG.
We prefer PNG over GIF because their size is so much
smaller.

• Microsoft Excel 2013 Goes Transparent When switching Tabs

Our site recently moved from Office 2010 to Office 2013 and there haven't been too many issues as of yet.  One of the ones thats being reported is that when you switch from one tab to Excel using Alt+Tab nothing appears.  But when you hold
the cursor over the page you see that + sign as if your in excel.
The particular spreadsheet where this happens most frequently has no formulas and almost no formatting apart from a colour code.  Its a list of external links to websites used by their department.  For example New Stories, online resources, thats
the only out of the ordinary thing that is on this spreadsheet.
Any ideas for a fix?

Hi
To solve the issue more efficiently, I would like to confirm what it exactly means :"hold the cursor over the page you see that + sign as if your in excel". You mean switch between windows diaplayed when clicking Alt+Tab?
Copy the contents to a new workbook to check if the problem still exists.
If that doesn't work, repair Office 2013 in Control panel>Program and features>Office 2013(change)>Repair.

• Window goes transparent with only title bar left

I'm trying to download Adobe Flash Player (11.5) for mac OS X (10.6) and when i should get the window to check box and instal- it disappears!!!with only the top of the window (title bar) left so i can close or minimize only

This happens when i am installing (i have already done all the steps of the window you see behind on the screen shot: http://get2.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=Flash_Player_11_for_Mac_OS_X_10.6_-_ 10.8&os=OSX&browser_type=Gecko&browser_dist=Firefox). I took two screen shots: one right before and one after the content has disappeared. Thanks

• Transparent lines when going from AI to Photoshop

Once in a blue moon, I open an AI file into Photoshop and get these thin gaps (see image.) Usually, I can just re-do it and it's fine, but sometimes the problem persists. It hasn't happened enough for me to do a full scientific-method investigation, but I'm wondering if anybody knows for sure what causes this. CS5 on both apps. Mac OS 10.6.8 Thanks.

We have been pasting smart objects into Photoshop. To reconstruct a Photoshop layered smart object document we turn off the layer print property of all but one layer of each smart object layers (this keeps smart objects in register, quicker than using a dummy bounding box).
You need to duplicate smart object in Photoshop by contextual menu clicking on a smart object >> New smart object via copy, so the layer properties can differ for each smart object.

• Transparency Mask not completely transparent

I'm making a B&W gradient transparency mask for an object (like I've done 1000 times before). Except this time, it's not taking my object to complete transparency. Even at the whitest portions, it's like 20% opaque.
I have my main object. I select it, choose "Mask Transp Mask". I then draw a rectangle around my shape and fill it with a B&W linear gradient. It should feather my main object to complete transparency, right?
What am I missing?

Actually I just figured out a way to fix it, not sure if as-is its a bug or not, but...

• Transparent graphic not completely transparent

I have a line graph on which a gradient arc has been built in the lower left corner. This was in a Freehand file (created by a coworker) I've imported into Illustrator CS2 and am updating.
In this file I am importing a graphic from Photoshop that has a transparent background.
The entire graph, including the line and type shows through the transparent background of the imported graphic.
But the areas of the gradient arc under the imported graphic show a white box where the transparent background should be. If I move the graphic with the transparent background to the back, the gradient arc covers it.
When this graphic is selected, clipping path is greyed out under the Object menu.
How do I get the gradient arc to show through the transparent areas of the graphic?

Here are the screenshots. As you see, the skull graphic is transparent to all but the green-shaded arc.

• Getting an image inside of a CSS created background transparency to NOT be transparent

I created a div with a partially transparent background color.  That is working great.  But, inside that div I placed an image and that image is also partially transparent, which I do not want.  I want the image to be 100% opaque.  I have tried and failed with a variety of styles.
Here is the CSS that makes the background color partially transparent.
#home-text {
        width: 873px;
        margin-right: auto;
        margin-left: auto;
        color: #000;
        background-color: #E4CC92;
        /* for IE */
      filter:alpha(opacity=70);
        /* CSS3 standard */
      opacity:0.7;
        margin-top: 725px;
        padding-top: 10px;
        padding-left: 35px;
        padding-right: 10px;
        padding-bottom: 20px;
        font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
        font-weight: normal;
        font-size: 12px;
        border: 2px solid #421206;
Thank you for any help.

I'm afraid opacity effects everything inside the container.
As a workaround, apply a semi-transparent PNG background-image to your container.  This will give the 'see through' effect without degrading opacity on  text & images.
