US iPad in South Africa drops 3G connection

I recently took ownership of a 32GB 3G iPad and got the micro sim from Vodacom, my cellular service provider, and my 3G works well apart from the 3G connection dropping after a few minutes for no apparent reason. The only way to get it back is to switch off the iPad and turn it back on again. It then works. It's most frustrating.
Can anyone help me?

Hi Priya
I'm loving my new 3G 32GB iPad. I got it from a client of mine who lives in the states. My US iPad works 100% apart from the problem I came across in my post.
I currently have an iPhone data contract from Vodacom and all I did was went to my local Vodashop and bought a micro sim card which cost R99. They added a new data bundle for my iPad to my existing contract and it was very quick and easy to do.
I would recommend getting it from the states because they are currently half the prices from what I saw on wantitall.co.za
My iPad is unlocked. I didn't have to crack it, jail break it or whatever they do nowadays. I took it out of the sealed box and started using it.

• Taking my US 3G iPad to South Africa

Going to South Africa for 10 days in July and wondering if there is a way to swap SIM cards (purchase locally in South Africa) and pay local rates for 3G data in South Africa.
Does anyone know how to do this, if this would work, if this would affect my warranty with ATT or Apple?

Yes - if there is a carrier in South Africa that provides a pre-paid micro-SIM card for data access only.

The iPad 3G has a micro-SIM card tray which you would eject to remove the AT&T micro-SIM card and to place the micro-SIM card acquired from a carrier in South Africa - with the iPad powered off when doing so. Place the AT&T micro-SIM card in a safe place for use when you return.
There is no warranty with AT&T, and this would not affect Apple's warranty for the iPad. The iPad is not sold as carrier locked with AT&T, which means it can be used with any other carrier's micro-SIM card for data access only via the carrier's network.

Good question. Google is rather unscrupulous and Apple doesn't endorse it. Maybe someone else can help.

• IPad 3, 64 gig: drops internet connection.

I can use the internet once or twice then it locks up. The blue bar moves about 4 letters on the left and then stops. Took to Genius Bar, they had no idea. Have clicked on "Renew Lease" in the Wi-Fi setting. The only way to access is to turn off using the red slide, wait and then reboot.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Yes, you can use your iPad in South Africa. All of the built in apps should work just fine.

• Hi I am in south Africa and wifi is very restricted so I have a 3G card with 5gig cap but when I want to download applications for iPad larger than 20meg it says I must use wifi is there a setting I can change to increase the cap on 3G downloads

Hi I am from south Africa and wi fi is very restricted so I have a 3G card in my iPad and it has a 5 Gig capacity, however when I want to download applications bigger than 20meg it asks for a wifi connection. Is there a setting I can change so to allow a higher capacity 3G downloads?

The R201 MiFi is really nifty. It's the size of a credit card, and a bit thicker. Costs just over R1200 and can connect up to 5 devices. It charges via USB or via the iPad adapter and will give about 3 hours use on a charge. I actually feel that with a MiFi, you don't need any 3G on the iPad.

• IPad Air after upgrade to ios 8 continue to drop WiFi connection

On September 19, I upgrade my ipad air to ios 8, and it had been dropping Wifi connection ever since. I was browsing using Chrome and next thing the browser hang up; then error message informed me to no network connection. By the way, my network was strong (5 bars), because I was streaming to my Roku in HD without any issues. At the same time, my Airplay do not want to stream the content in full screen either. It only mirror what have see on my ipad, not allow me to go full screen on TV. I hoped Apple will step up and correct this issue as soon as possible; I miss the good old day of reliable upgrade from Apple.

Yes, and hopeful 8.1.1 will help. It's supposedly in beta testing.

• Hi, I am planning a trip to South Africa (I live in Canada) and would like to know if I'll be able to use my Ipad there and what do I need to do to be able to have wi-fi or 4g access? Anybody can help me?

Hi,
I am planning a trip to South Africa in Nov/Dec. I live in Winnipeg Canada and own an Ipad wi-fi cellular. I would like to know if it is easy once in South Africa to use my device the way it is (i.e. with its existing SIM card etc). Or do I need to acquire a different SIM card? Also in order not to pay a fortune for the service is it better to acquire if needed a SIM card only once there? Also if I need a different SIM card where does one go to get one in South Africa? I have never travelled anywhere other than across Canada with my ipad (I am a fairly recent owner of such a device) and could use some help as to the best way to be able to use my machine in South Africa safely efficiently and at a reasonable cost.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

Also in order not to pay a fortune for the service is it better to acquire if needed a SIM card only once there?
Check with your carrier about roaming charges. They are usually prohibitive. Best to get a local SIM.

• Does anyone know when the "new" iPad will be available in South Africa?

Hi
I'm not really sure where this should be posted. I know that there are two releases of the new iPad scheduled, one on the 16th of March, and one at the end of the month. But SA isn't on either of those lists. There is a huge demand for and support of Apple products in South Africa. I own the iPad 2, but now that I've seen what the new pad is capable of, I can't wait to upgrade!

All anyone on here knows is what Apple has published...only thing to do is wait for a release announcement.

• HT2693 I am in South Africa I have a A1219 ipad using ios 5 1 how can I update it? I cant get Whatsapp?

I have a ipad A1219 that uses ios5.1 iwant to upgrade it to use latest ios? I am trying to dowload "Whatsapp" I can not download they say the app is not available in South Africa, please help me!

Model A12129 is the first gen iPad, it only supports up to iOS 5.1.1 - you cant install iOS 6+ on it
The developers of Whatsapp have not made a version for iPads, it can only be installed on iPhones.

• IPad Mini 3 drops WiFi connection to hotspot under load

I have a weird problem that appears to be device-specific. Ingredients:
iPad Mini 3 (WiFi)
iOS 8.2
FreedomPop Sierra Wireless Hotspot
I have no issues with network connectivity with my Mini 3 on high speed networks at home or work. In particular, I can run the Ookla Speedtest app just fine. I can download/update apps fine. However, if I connect to the Hotspot (which has much lower bandwidth), I have problems under heavy network load, such as those. The Mini 3 will drop the connection, thus messing up what I was trying to do, then connect again. If I do the same experiment with my wife's Mini 3 (mine is 64GB, hers is 32GB), all conditions the same (OS, Hotspot, apps), her Mini 3 does not drop the connection, and everything works fine.
I have done the obvious things, but the connection still gets dropped intermittantly:
force-exit all apps
restart the Mini 3
update to iOS 8.2 (the problem was present in earlier iOS 8 versions, too)
I have concluded that my Mini 3 must have a hardware problem with the WiFi. Are there other possiblities? What are the odds Apple will fix the problem (which probably requires a new Mini 3) if I'm right?

Thanks for responding.
I don't suspect the Sierra. It worked fine with my wife's Mini 3, my laptop, my iPod, my older iPad. During my testing I used only one device at a time. The problem with my Mini 3 persists after resetting the Mini 3. I have not tried backup/restore.
My Mini 3 works fine through my home router, at least to the extent that the WiFi connection does not drop.
I agree that there's probably no widespread problem with Mini 3 WiFi. However, given the set of things that work and don't work, particularly that my wife's Mini 3 has no problem but mine does, the only remaining variable (IMO) is the WiFi support in my Mini 3. And given that my wife's identical (other than memory size) Mini 3 has no problem, it could only be the WiFi hardware in my specific Mini 3.
It remains a mystery to me what it is about the interaction between my Mini 3 and the hotspot that causes the WiFi connection to drop.

• When will the New iPad be availble in South Africa

• IPad randomly dropping wifi connection

I have seen quite a few posts regarding iPad dropping wifi connection. I have tried all the usual reboot router, updates, etc but the issue remains.
I need to keep switching wifi off then on again to re connect?
Does anyone have any better ideas than waiting for a bug fix?
Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have not had this issue outside of my home wifi so I suppose this points to a router issue.
When I read that others have had the same issue I presumed it was a bug.
"Updates" does mean router firmware updates.
I am using WPA2-PSK security but have tried WEP and WPA-PSK setting with the same result.
The router is a Netgear RangeMax model DG834PN
It is in g&b mode( whatever that means)
I appreciate your comments.
