Usage advice

hi
i need advice on using the mbp so it last longer.
so i just got the new macbook pro 13" few weeks back. im a very busy person and always had to rush somewhere. normally id just close the lid, put it in my bag, and later, i'd open the lid, and continued what i was doing.
will this have any effect on my battery? like maybe reducing its life?
when i close the lid, it shuts down, right? so i had no worries of heating when in my bag? right? also, since its off, the hdd is also off? would there be any risk of damaging the hdd since its in my bag while im walking around?
thanks in advance to any answers or advice.

Putting the computer to sleep only reduces the amount of power used whereas shutting it down stops any power consumption. So, yes, sleep still uses some battery power and reduces usage time by some small amount. But it will not reduce the battery's overall life.
Putting the computer to sleep is not the same as shutting down, but it will prevent overheating while in your bag. The hard drive is put to sleep also. There is little risk of damaging the hard drive unless the computer is going to be badly jostled. Even then the sudden motion sensor will prevent damage to the drive heads and platters.
This said Apple recommends that if the computer would not be in use for more than 2-4 hours, then it's best to shut it down rather than putting it to sleep. But this doesn't sound like it would apply to your daily routine as you've described it.

SharePoint 2013 Snippets usage advice and help
I am new to SharePoint Site development.  I am creating a simple public website to look similar to their old one.
I have created a masterpage that looks OK using the design manager, and also a page layout. I have got the website looking half OK.
I seem to have difficulties all the time when it comes to snippets - and finding specific help on how to use each individual one.
So the main question - where would you advise I go to get help?
    The current snippet issue is:
      > regarding to top navigation menu
      > I have inserted one into the masterpage - and got it working
      > However it will not let me do submenus when I go into Edit Links
      > But I then went to site settings and did the edit links from there
      > It let me there - but it's a different menu !! (I now have two)
      > I can't see this second menu from within the snippets - it defaults to one that does not allow sub menus
      > So how do I change the snippet to look at the menu I was able to edit
But more generally - when I get this kind of issue, where to I look for the solution?
    Thanks in anticipation

  • Usage advice needed

Looking to maybe buy a Mac Mini (would prefer the Mac Pro but the wife won't let me!). I can stretch to the Dual Core, with 120Gb disk and can probably stretch to 2Gb memory. Basically would like to hear from anyone as to whether I'll be able to do the following:
    - Use my old Apple 23" Cinema display (the old plastic one, not the metal finish, ADC connector)
    - Edit videos with iMovie at a decent performance and burn using iDVD
    - Use Photoshop CS2
    - Run Windows XP under Parallels
    - Use my Logitech Fusion webcam
That's all I need to do, which is maybe a lot for a small box. My last Mac was an old PowerMac G4 Dual 1Ghz so I'm not sure how the performance has improved.

I just purchased a Core Duo model and it is decently quicker than my previous system, a Power Mac G4 Dual 1.42Ghz model. The high end Mac mini is a HE*L of a lot of computer in such a small space. A year ago you would have had to spend around $2k for a decent G5 to get this level of performance.
You can use your old display but you will need an adapter, available on the 'net if you search a bit.
Everything else you mention should run fine. Photoshop may be a tad slow to start up but unless you're doing professional level tasks all day long then it should be quite acceptable with the amount of memory you're talking about.

  • Any ideas on how to swap a to&from date table to monthly using DI?

New to DI, so after a bit of product usage advice!
I've got a table that looks like this...
    ID,NAME,SDATE,EDATE,TOTALDAYS,WEEKDAYS
    1,James,01/01/2010,10/01/2010,10,6
    2,John,03/02/2010,19/02/2010,16,13
    1,James,15/04/2010,23/07/2010,100,72

    3,Chris,28/09/2010,06/10/2010,9,7
I want it in a format thats a bit more like this...
    YEAR,MONTH,ID,NAME,TOTALDAYS,WEEKDAYS
    2010,JAN,1,James,10,6
    2010,FEB,2,John,16,13
    2010,APR,1,James,16,12
    2010,MAY,1,James,31,21

    2010,AUG,3,Chris,1,1
    2010,AUG,2,John,2,2
    2010,SEP,2,John,3,3
    2010,SEP,3,Chris,3,3
    2010,OCT,3,Chris,6,4
Anyway to do this type of operation in DI?
It's not a huge data set (k's of rows) - but I need it in this sort of format do do some monthly reporting.  So far in DI I've only really used simple lookups and joins - more a load tool - so hope this type of thing is relativley standard stuff?
    Thanks for any advice!
    j.

You can use below functions in query transform:
    to_char(<input_date type value>, <'YYYY | MON>') to get the year / Month.

  • Powershell, howto get it done in less lines?

    Hi,
I have these SCCM 2012 lines which I 'd like to do in less lines.
    I could use
    $Limitingcollections = "All Systems"
    but when I use
    $DevicecollectionName = @("Windows 7", "Windows 8" etc) and use
    New-CMDevicecollection -Name $DeviceCollectionName -LimitingCollection $Limitingcollection
    It says
"New-CMDeviceCollection : Cannot convert 'System.Object[]' to the type 'System.String' required by parameter 'Name'.
so apparently it is not supported.
New-CMDeviceCollection -name "Windows 7" -LimitingCollectionName "All Systems"
New-CMDeviceCollection -name "Windows 8" -LimitingCollectionName "All Systems"
New-CMDeviceCollection -name "Windows 2012 R2" -LimitingCollectionName "All Systems"

I'd recommend asking about the ConfigMgr cmdlets in the ConfigMgr PowerShell forum:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=configmanagersdk
We can give you basic usage advice here, but they'll be better equipped to answer questions about how the ConfigMgr-specific cmdlets work.
EDIT: Actually, this one is easy enough to answer. You need to use -LimitingCollectionName or -LimitingCollectionId:

  • My iPhone continues to alert me that my storage is nearly full, but in Usage, it's states I have 14gb free. Any advice?

    Hey!
I have a 32gb iPhone 5S, updated to 8.1.3. I keep getting pop-up alerts that my phone storage is nearly full, but when I go to Settings>General>Usage it claims I've used 12.4gb and have 14.4gb available. Any music that I've bought and downloaded from iTunes through my phone has been erased, put into the cloud, and can only be streamed on wifi.
Unfortunately, my Mac's harddrive died recently, so I don't have a way to sync my iPhone until I purchase a new desktop.
Any suggestions on what might be going on? Thanks!

If you go to Settings > General > Usage check both the "Storage" section which has Used, Available, and Manage Storage and immediately below that is the iCloud section which has Total Storage, Available, and Manage Storage. I'm guessing that the alert you are getting is referring to your iCloud storage. If so, the following may help: Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

  • Can I get some advice on why data usage is so high since joining Meteor broadband?

I have been a Meteor 4G broadband customer for 3 months and i have two plans that allows me 80GB per month.  Before joining Meteor i was with Three and had a 60GB monthly allowance and I never went over the allowance.  Since joining Meteor we are constantly having to switch off the router most of the day because our usage is really high.  On average we turn off wifi each day until 6pm in the evening and we still use 1.8GB when only using laptop for one hour!! We have updated all settings on phones for manual updates, my son has PS4 but he does not play online any more.  We only use the laptop for reading news etc.... We never watch movies online, occasionally we use YouTube.  Can you offer any reasons why this is happening?  We are not getting any enjoyment from this service as we are constantly obsessing about how much data we use! We are seriously thinking about cancelling the service.

    Hi there NulaF
Have you checked your usage on MyMeteor to see if this matches? Not to forget that MyMeteor can take up to 24 hours to update.
Have a look at your usage and if there is anything that you want to query, call Care. They will then get in touch with Tech and raise a ticket if they have to

  • Need advice for Fn key usage in Motion.

I am just beginning my usage of Motion 4 and working through Mark Spencer's book. The book keeps referring you to use the Fn keys. But mine don't work the way they are supposed to. I went into System prefs and selected the use all Fn keys and when I go back into the program to use them I press the fn key and the appropriate Fn key (ex. F5 to open the project pane) and all I get is a beep and nothing happens. If I just use the F-F8 procedure it will just add an f or a 5 etc, into the area at the bottom for the current time. Or if I hit the Fn-F8 it opens iTunes. I know I can work it out by using the long way around. But I know it is easier to use the function keys from experience in the CS4 suites. Is there anything I am not trying or something anyone can recommend to make these work properly?
    Thanks,
    Scott

That's what I have been counting on. However, when I press F5 for example, it takes whatever is on the canvas and replaces the bounding box with a red rectangle. I am somewhat proficient on a Mac but this is the first issue I have come across.

  • Usage of inbound EDI payment advice

    Hello experts,
I'm asked to implement an inbound payment advice / remittance advice via EDI using VDA 4907. I dived into the SAP help for this as well as into many discussions in this forum but I'm still unsure about the underlying concept as intended by SAP. My understanding is that the remittance advice closes the gap between a large single incoming payment and potentially many open items, thus clearing the open items and the payment.
Can someone please let me know if this understanding is correct?
How does this two-sided clearing process work?
Thanks in advance and best regards,
    Christoph

    Hi Abdul,
Currently I am working on EDI 820. I have really no clue how to configure this functionality.
I have done research but I couldn't manage to get enough material on this.
Since you have already worked on this using all your expertise I would appreciate if you could send some require material or info on the same.
    Regards,

  • Advice for "Pro-sumer" usage

I do a lot of photography, mainly of my kids, but I also do some advanced astrophotography with my Digital Rebel. I am not a pro, but with close to 10K images, I find that iPhoto is some what limiting. I currently only shoot in RAW when I am using my telescopes and use a specialty stacking and processing application called Images Plus for that work.
I am wondering if moving to Aperture and starting to shoot all of my work in RAW format will be all that beneficial to me. I use Photoshop and know how to work with images, but to date I have always shot in jpeg formats because it was too much of a hassle to deal with RAW files.
Now that Aperture is priced a bit more reasonably, what advice would those of you that use it give to someone who doesn't make a living with it, but wants a bit more than what iPhoto has to offer? Would I benefit from the workflow in Aperture?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
    Intel iMac 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   G4 867, PowerMac 6500, Centris 610, Powerbook 100, etc...

Tom, if your iMac is a 2GHz model, then we're using pretty much the same computer except that mine is a 20".
I'm not a professional, just an enthusiast. there's nothing better than going out 'hunting', trying to get a better photo of the birds or animals around my home than last time. I'm taking a lot of photos but haven't reached your library's size yet.
I'm very particular though. I don't use Photoshop because it costs too much and it has too many functions that I don't need. I simply need to improve my photos through basic functions such as white balance, contrast, exposure, etc.
iPhoto 6 was ok but very limiting. Aperture makes it very easy for me to:
    (a) go through each photo from a day's take and quickly identify and mark the out-of-focus or non-aesthetic images, even at pixel resolution using either the Zoom function or the Loupe. comparing and ranking images is easy too.
    (b) organising the photos into groups with no limit of nesting and duplicate names.
    (c) multi-tiered keywords. I search for 'Insects' and automatically get Spiders, Butterflies, and everything else in my collection under that category.
    (d) touch-up the images. the touch up tools are just what I need on a regular basis. if you're a Photoshop guy, then you might find the tools lacking but I have all I need there and I'm sure there'll be more with future versions if I ever find myself with too much time on my hands.
what do I find lacking in Aperture? I'd like to be able to build my own custom Web Gallery templates/themes. I already have a custom-built photo html/css album. I'd really like to duplicate it in Aperture.
btw, I shoot everything in RAW and I'm using a Canon EOS 350D, the Asian version of your camera. Aperture's rendering of my photos has been great except for several photos where shadow area under one leg of a resting dog was rendered greenish. I've reported it to Apple. it'll be interesting to see if they fix it.
fire away if you have any more questions.

  • Advice to external monitor for desktop usage of my MacBook (early 2008)

    Hi,
I've a MacBook early 2008, and I'd like to use it at home "as a desktop". My idea is to close the macbook when I'm at home, plug an external monitor and use bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
What about external monitor? I don't want to extend desktop, but I want to replace, at home, macbook display with monitor.
Do you have any advice to give me?
    Bye

You can use basically any monitor (short of a 30" LCD) with your MacBook. Common connectors are DVI, VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort. Check what you have on your MacBook and buy a monitor that has that connector. (Most MacBooks came with a VGA or DVI adapter, I don't remember which.)
As for your computer going to sleep, it's not a bug, it's a feature. Press any key on an external keyboard while your computer is hooked up to an external monitor, and the laptop should wake back up, recognize the display, and be ready to use.

  • Advice for disk usage

    Hi everybody!
I read the brilliant guideline of Harm about Disk Usage: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/662972
I ask your help to manage in the best way my new pc workflow.
    I will probably have 3 + 1 HDD or 2 + 1:
    - 1 SSD
    - 2 (or 1) HDD 7200rpm
    - 1 external HDD MyBook Studio II 2TB in RAID0 but I can configure it in RAID1 1TB (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=210)
How do you recommend to manage work on that configuration?

    nanodom wrote:
    I will be on PC.
Actually now that I'm starting to configurate my PC, I never considerate my WD MyBook cause it was external, but I was asking to myself if I should do.
    Do you think so?
And why do you choose it for media cache and previews?
Here's why Harm chose the external for media cache:
The sequential transfer speed of that external, when connected via eSATA, is faster than any single hard drive - if the external is configured as RAID 0. However, any other interface will seriously limit the performance of that external; for example, the next-dastest interface after eSATA, FW800, has a maximum sustainable (practical) transfer rate of only about 75 MB/s - slower than most if not all single disks. Hence, Harm recommended RAID 1 with that external when used with a Mac since no Mac has eSATA capability at all. Forget about using FW400 or USB with that external; that drive connected via USB (which is limited in that drive to the USB 2.0 standard) can only sustain 25 to 30 MB/s while FW400 performance (in the case of most pre-assembled external hard drive kuts) is even slower (due to the fact that most FW400-to-SATA translators used in external drive enclosures suck).

  • Need Advice about PPL Usage

    LV 2013, LVRT 2013 (PXI), Win 7
I'm an old hand at LabVIEW, but I'm new to using Project Libraries (.lvlib) and Packed Project Libraries (.lvlibp).
I'm hoping someone with more experience can offer some insight and guidance.
At first blush, it looks like PPLs can solve a problem of mine.
My project is large: 500 channels from 20+ different domains: plugin boards, networked devices, etc.  Lots of data analysis and reporting.  There are 30+ cells with a copy of this, it has to be EXE and RTEXE files, not just LabVIEW DevSys.
It's been working for 10+ years, we are now doing a rewrite, so that DAQ is happening all the time, rather than on demand.
My client wants to have "addons", so that when a new Gizmotron 9000 comes along, we don't have to add to the main program, we write an "addon" to handle the Gizmotron.  This "addon" would have a UI, and be able to share VIs from the main host, and data, but not require any changes to the host code. Eventually, these should be capable of being written by someone other than me, an engineer (in some other field) with fewer LabVIEW skills than me.
Using a VI for this would work, but is kind of fragile.  If this VI uses a VI in the host, then it's path-dependent.  Moving the VI to a different folder would at best, cause a SEARCH box to come up, and at worst, break things.  I'm not even sure if the SEARCH box would come up, in an EXE.  And if I want a given host VI to be available to these addons, I have to make sure that it's not stripped by the BUILD process.
So, I looked at making a DLL. Yuck. Double Yuck.  I'm not about to make the client have to edit C header files, just making the "wizard" import a DLL that it just made is a nightmare.
So, i found PPLs.  It looks like they're the answer.
I've already implemented a system where a given PPL has a "Description" VI, and a "Work" VI. If you choose a given PPL, it runs the "Decription" VI and obtains a text decription (that the maker writes) of what the package does.  If you choose this one, then it takes the "Work" VI, creates a new window with a subPanel to fit, and installs the "Work" VI in it. A string notifier sends messages to it.  The host provides Preferences save / restore functions.  The window can be hidden and shown. It can do anything as far as UI that it needs.
I can move the PPL from the ADDONS folder to the ADDONS\GoodStuff\2015\May folder.  My menu system will offer it, and if you choose it, it still works. It is self-contained, it just works.
But being self-contained has a "small" downside.  I have a fair number of FGVs: Functional Global Variables.  I call them "managers" - the idea is that they keep info in Shift Registers, and a caller calls them with some function to perform using that info.
For example, one might keep a TCP Connection ID in such a ShiftReg and have CONNECT, DISCONNECT, and various SEND and RECEIVE functions which use that ShiftReg.
Without attention, that pattern doesn't survive the move to PPLs.  Because of the "self-contained" aspect, there are actually TWO instances of the manager, with TWO separate dataspaces. So, if the host calls it, and the PPL then calls it, they don't share the same info.
Here's where my understanding of this gets dicey.  If I create a separate PPL just for this manager, then that's an answer.  If everybody calls the PPL version, then there will only be one instance, and all is well.
But what's the best way to do that?
I can put the LVLIB into the master project, and then add a Build Spec to make the LVLIBP, I found out I have to actually put the PPL itself into the project to get it to work.  But that means there are TWO copies of the VI in the project.  The only way I can get it to work is to specify to use the copy from the PPL, and NOT use the one that's in the host already.
So, to avoid temptation, should I move all these manager things into one separate project?  Should I move them into individual separate projects?  Should I just remove the components from the main project after building the PPL? (no, I can't do that - that would make it impossible to update the PPL).  What's the best strategy, and why?
Another thing I don't understand is the physical handling of the PPL.  Does it have to actually exist?
    Apparently not - I did a test:
--- Create a LVLIB for one of these managers.  It lives in the ADDONS folder.
--- My HOST code (in an EXE) initializes it, and stores a value.
--- One of the ADDONS from a PPL reads that value and displays it.
--- It works.  The data is shared.
--- I moved the PPL file to a different folder, inside the ADDONS folder.  It works.
--- I moved the PPL file to my desktop.  IT STILL WORKS.
--- I changed the PPLs file name .  IT STILL WORKS.
--- I deleted the PPL file.  IT STILL WORKS.
So, apparently the PPL was incorporated into the EXE.  But I didn't specifically include it - the only SOURCE code I specified was the host main VI.
Is that what happened? Am I understanding it right?
But if that's what happened, then how does a stand-alone PPL know that it's there?  Because my standalone PPL accessed it just fine, even though it's in an EXE.
Do I have to deploy the PPL file alongside the EXE? or just ignore the thing.  I just don't quite understand how it works.

But if the path is important, then this is not solving one of my problems, the portability of the addons.
If your problem is "how do I find plugins not included in my EXE as a plugin architecture".  By relative path is the only simple method.  If the plugin architecture uses VIs, or classes, or PPL, you will always need to enumerate the plugins not included in the EXE.  The easiest way is to enumerate a folder of files and say each one is a plugin.
Alternatively you could have something in the middle like a text file that says where to find the plugins, or a registry to read that says where they are as an absolute path.  But then you have another place where the fragility of the system could be seen.  In addition to the plugins not being where they should be, your text file could be broken, or missing.  At least with a PPL, or LLB, or Class you have a single file that is seen as the main which references the others.
As much as I resist classes complicating things, this is a prime example of where they should be used.  I don't want to change your design if it is too late, but you should  at least take a look at the Hardware Abstraction Layer.
