USB Drive Resets during file copy, interrupting file operations

Fresh Arch Linux install, working USB thumb drive (Windows, previous Arch Linux setups, etc.), formatted FAT32.
Seems to randomly reset, eject, and auto-re-mount during extensive file operations (i.e. copying 4gb worth of 800 files from the USB thumb drive to disk).
I've tried various USB ports to no avail; no external hub being used.
Thoughts? Not sure where to begin diagnosing:

So it's not "how it work in mac", but it's a limitation of the FAT32 file system.

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

  • TC and WD500 External drive - Locks up when copying large files

I have a TC with a Western Digital 500GB my Book connected to the USB port on the TC that I use for network Storage. Everything works fine until I try to copy large files or directories from the Finder mounted share. After the copy freezes the external drive can no longer be seen by airport utility. If I look at disks it sees the disk but no partition. I have to power cycle the external drive to have TC see the drive again. Then I disconnect the drive and plug it in directly to the MAC and run disk utility and his repairs the journal. I have to do the repair every time it locks up. Should the external drive be formatted different or does it have to be connected to a USB hub. Or is this just a bug with the TC and afp ?

I have this very same problem.
I tried to copy a 4GB+ folder from the Macbook to the 500GB MyBook attached to my TC and it froze.
Now the the files on the MyBook are invisible when attached to the TC ("0 Items") but are available when the drive is connected directly to the Macbook. I have run disk utility but it hasn't helped. The disk is FAT 32 formatted and the files on the MyBook are still invisible over the network.
When the drive attached to the Macbook directly I can see a 'phantom' file with the same title as the 4GB+ folder I'd tried to copy. This file is "ZERO KB" and it cannot be deleted (error code -43).
Anyone have a clue what is happening here?

  • Attaching USB Drive - Can't read AP configuration file, kills internet

    Current network:
    Airport Extreme (Sim Dual-Band)
    Mac Pro (wired Ethernet)
MacBook Pro (wired or WiFi N)
    MacBook (WiFi N)
    2 x iPhones (WiFi G)
Airport Extreme in use for several months with no problems. All Macs can read/write it's configuration.
I hooked up a 1TB My Book USB HD to the Airport Extreme via USB. All three Macs (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook) could see and read/write to the new drive. The Airport Extreme appeared in Airport Utility on all three Macs. Wired, WiFi N + G internet continued to work great... however none of the Macs could read the configuration file of the Airport Extreme. If I unplugged the USB drive all the Macs could read and write to the configuration file.
I plugged the USB drive back in and left it overnight. This morning, everything continued to work, with the exception that none of the computers could read the configuration of the AP.
Around 10am today the Macs/iPhones could no longer connect to the internet. I disconnected the USB drive and now the internet works again.

  • Usb drive - ftp connects but no folders/files listed

I am sure it is something on my end, but I can't get any folders/files to show up when i ftp to my conencted usb drive.
In the linksys control panel, I have created users along with passwords. I created one user with read/write capabilities and another with just read capability.
using both a browser and cuteftp, i can connect to either account with no problem, but no files show up , it is just blank.
Thinking it may be a directory issue, I connected using cuteftp and pointed it at the directory i wanted . Again, it connected just fine but no files were listed (it is all music files)
When I am connected, with cuteftp, it appears to show me in the root directory just a / - which is why i tried pointing it to the correct directory /music.......
I am connecting using port 21 as shown in the linksys control panel.
    any suggestions appreciated.
I do have access to the drive locally in my network. All of my computers can see it and share the files.....just can't get the ftp to work.
    thanks

Have you assigned correct shares to those users you have created? And can you also give the exact model / brand of your device so it would be easier for other users as well.

  • Cannot backup my files / copy my files and folders due to error message " The operation can't be completed because an item with the name ".DS_Store" already exists. "

    Hi Apple community!
I have a [rather worrying] problem.
When I try to copy all my files from my documents on my mac [or the entire documents folder] into an external drive, I get this error message
" The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “.DS_Store” already exists. "
I am not given an option to skip this file or anything else.
But I simply cannot complete the operation!
I have tried deleting a few of the .ds_store files, [both in the original and in the destinations]
    but no success.
    The same thing keeps happening.
At first, this was just happening when I was trying to backup to my dropbox folder [the one on my mac's harddrive, which gets synced to the cloud],
but then I tried to back up my documents to my external hard drive, and I realized it is giving me the same error message.
So effectively, it seems I cannot backup my files anywhere!
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Need guidance on file-copy .otl file.

I created ASO application with only dimension and members.I need to create the same outline through File-copy method.i copied the .otl in to c:/oracle......./essbaseserver/app/.
Now i am able to see only dummy outline. If i right click on database and proview data.I am getting error and can't preview dimension and members.Any additional files to be copied in to that directory.
Even my next task is to load the data in to the dummy outline which consists of dimensions and memebrs only.

Since there's not much background here, my answer will be very basic.
If you want to copy an existing outline and paste it to a different database, you must first create the new application and database in EAS.
It will create a directory such as c:/oracle......./essbaseserver/app/newapp/newdb.
Once the application is created, stop the new database.
Paste the .otl file into the newdb directory with the same name as the database, i.e. in the above example it should be named newdb.otl.
    Restart the database.
You should be off to the races.
Alternately you could open the outline in EAS, do "save as", and overwrite the outline in the newdb. Or use the Migration Wizared in EAS.
By the way: None of these will allow you to see data. You will have to load the new database separately.
    Hope this helps,

  • Should I set up my external hard drive as HFS when copying PC files to MAC

I have just purchased an external hard drive and hooked it up to my PowerMac G5 running OS X. My Mac is networked to a PC via Wi-Fi. When using my Mac I can open/delete/save files to my PC and drag them to my Mac.
I would like to back up my whole PC onto the firewire external drive. I only have a firewire connection on my Mac, so I don't want to unplug it and set it up on the PC as well.
Are there any issues if I format the drive using Disc Utility and format it as HFS, then simply drag the files and applications from my PC to my external hard drive. If the PC fails, will I have any issues when I drag the files back to a networked PC via my Mac?

Backing up an entire hard drive via Wi-Fi would be very slow and perhaps unreliable. I would really look into getting a firewire interface for the PC to accomplish the back-up. These cards are not very expensive and it would be a good investment.
You may have trouble when returning files from an HFS drive to your PC. Some of the files may appear doubled as ._FILENAME and FILENAME. The ._ file is used by Mac OS and is hidden, but is not used by Windows and shows as a separate file. MacDrive6 from MediaFour (http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive6//) can solve this problem, as well as allow an HFS+ formatted drive to appear in the Windows explorer when connected via Firewire, but there may still be problems with a backup procedure using drag and drop. It is probably best if you want to do this to format your drive as a Windows drive.
Also, backing up PC application and system files (or Mac ones for that matter) by dragging and dropping is a bad idea. Especially on the PC, but also occasionally on the Mac, applications install files in various system locations that are not easily accessable. It is best to restore applications and system files from the original software installation CD's or DVD's. If this is not possible, or inconvenient, look for a PC backup utility that is similar to Carbon Copy Cloner for the Mac (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html). Utilities such as this can create an image of a hard disk for backup purposes on any drive recognized by the system. I am sure there are many good PC backup utilities available, many probably as freeware.

  • Transferring music to new mac air using external drive: next steps after copying iTunes file to music folder?

I've followed instructions to consolidate, copy to external drive, then copy iTunes folder to Music folder on new mac air.  so...
    1. what do I do with original iTunes folder?
    2. how do I get iTunes to read/ingest playlist and songs?

Exactly what steps did you follow?
    1. what do I do with original iTunes folder?
    It's on your old computer.
What do you want to do with it?
    2. how do I get iTunes to read/ingest playlist and songs?
If you copied the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer then you simply need to open iTunes.
Since it is the exact same library, everything will be there as it was on old computer.

  • USB drive - Can't delete strange files

I use a Toshiba 8GB USB drive. I had been using it for my PC. When I recently bought my first Apple (MacBook Pro), I used this USB drive to transfer some of the files between my mac & pc. But now some of the folders on this drive have strange names e.g. " µÑ?:π\-.>é⌐*". When I try to delete these files or folders containing these files, I get an error saying : "cannot read from source file or disk".
Same thing happened with one of the files in the "Trashes" folder on the USB drive and I can't empty it now.
    I have a few questions:
    1) Do you know why I got these files in the first place?
    2) Do I need them and therefore just not worry about them?
    3) Can I delete them and if yes, how?
    Thanks,
    Mukul

your best bet is to get any data off the drive that you want to save and copy it to a folder on your desktop, etc.
Then use disk utility and format the disk as fat 32, and user the erase option to zero out the drive.
once that is done, move your data back and enjoy.

  • Cannot emtpy trash containing a file from FAT32 USB drive

    Hi
I had copied a .app file from another mac over a network to my FAT32 USB drive. I then deleted the file from the USB drive per normal it went to trash. The problem is that i cannot empty this one file out of trash.
    What iv tried thus far:
    - I tried restarting.
    - I tried dragging it back onto the USB and deleting again.
    - I tried dragging it onto my desktop, upon which it asked for my system password, and then deleting again.
    - I tried putting it back on the USB drive, restarting in windows XP, and tried deleting in windows.
None of the above has worked. The file is Zero KB. Windows gave an error with something about the file is not completed...?
    Thanks in advance

  • File copy inconsistency to FAT32 formatted external USB

Since most recent update rollout I have problems copying files and folders to my external USB drives.
    1. While attempting file copy OSX gives error message "File/Folder already present" and fails.
    2. Not all the files in the folders are copied prompting further verification of each folder. Occasionally it requires 3-4 additional attempt to further copy all the files.
    3. Files copied have their names destroyed and replaced with "~". When trying to rename the file/folder I get error message "Filename already taken", which is absolutely incorrect.
This is extremely worrying, since I have a large amount of photos from various sessions/events I have to retain, not to mention all my personal files.
If anybody experiences the same problem, please add to this thread by all means!
    Yours Sincerely

This is not an OS X-specific issue, but rather a FAT32-specific issue.
Namely, this occurs when an error occurs in the FAT32 partition's file allocation table. Remember that FAT32 does not use long filenames for files, but rather uses the old DOS 8.3 (8 characters plus 3 character extension; in FAT32, these start with ~) filenames, and saves the long file names as extended file info in the table.
What you are seeing is a file allocation table where the short filename is already in used but the metadata about the long filename is lost (so the filesystem can't tell whether to replace the file, or create a new 8.3 name and map to it).
Before you use the disk any more, you need to repair the FAT32 filesystem and remove the affected files. I don't know how good Disk Utility is for that, but you can try it. You can also reformat the partition.
This sort of thing can happen if the disk is improperly unmounted (doesn't matter which operating system), or is connected at a time when the system is forced to shutdown without disconnecting the disk (e.g., holding the power button down or power outage). It can rarely happen to a bad sector on the disk.

  • Drive Redirection virtual channel hangs when copying a file from server to client over RDP 8.1

    Problem Summary:
A UTF-8 without BOM Web RoE XML file output from a line of business application will not drag and drop copy nor copy/paste from a Server 2012 R2 RD Session Host running RD Gateway to a Windows 7 Remote Desktop client over an RDP 8.1 connection and the Drive
Redirection virtual channel hangs.  The same issue affects a test client/server with only Remote Desktop enabled on the server.
Other files copy with no issue.  See below for more info.
    Environment:
    Server 2012 R2 Standard v6.3.9600 Build 9600
the production server runs RDS Session Host and RD Gateway roles (on the same server).  BUT,
the issue can be reproduced on a test machine running this OS with simply Remote Desktop enabled for Remote Administration
    Windows 7 Pro w SP1v6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601 running updates to support RDP 8.1
    More Information:
-the file is a UTF-8 w/o BOM (Byte Order Marker) file containing XML data and has a .BLK extension.  It is a Web Record of Employment (RoE) data file exported from the Maestro accounting application.
-the XML file that does not copy does successfully validate against CRA's validation XML Schema for Web RoE files
-Video redirection is NOT AFFECTED and continues to work
-the Drive Redirection virtual channel can be re-established by disconnecting/reconnecting
-when the copy fails, a file is created on the client and is a similar size to the original.  However, the contents are incomplete.  The file appears blank but CTRL-A shows whitespace
-we can copy the contents into a file created with Notepad and then that file, which used to copy, will then NOT copy
-the issue affects another Server 2012 R2 test installation, not just the production server
-it also affects other client Win7 Pro systems against affected server
-the issue is uni-directional i.e. copy fails server to client but succeeds client to server
-I don't notice any event log entries at the time I attempt to copy the file.
    What DOES WORK
-downgrading to RDP 7.1 on the client WORKS
-modifying the file > 2 characters -- either changing existing characters or adding characters (CRLFs) WORKS
-compressing the file WORKS e.g. to a ZIP file
-copying OTHER files of smaller, same, and larger sizes WORKS
    What DOES NOT WORK?
-changing the name and/or extension does not work
-copying and pasting affected content into a text file that used to have different content and did copy before, then does not work
-Disabling SMB3 and SMB2 does not work
-modifying TCP auto-tuning does not work
-disabling WinFW on both client and server does not work
As noted above, if I modify the affected file to sanitize it's contents, it will work, so it's not much help.  I'm going to try to get a sample file exported that I can upload since I can't give you the original.
    Your help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.
    Kevin

    Hi Dharmesh,
    Thanks for your reply!
The issue does seem to affect multiple users.  I'm not fully clear on whether it's multiple users and the same employee's file, but I suspect so.
The issue happens with a specific XML file and I've since determined that it seems to affect the exported RoE XML file for one employee (record?) in the software.  Other employees appear to work.
The biggest issue is that there's limited support from the vendor in this scenario.  Their app is supported on 2012 R2 RDS.
What I can't quite wrap my head around are
why does it work in RDP 7.1 but not 8.1?  What differences between the two for drive redirection would have it work in 7.1 and not 8.1?
when I examine the affected file, it really doesn't appear any different than one that works.  I used Notepad++ and it shows the encoding as the same and there doesn't appear to be any invalid characters in the affected file.  I wondered
if there was some string of characters that was being misinterpreted by RDP or some other operation and blocked somehow but besides having disabled AV and firewall software on both ends, I'm not sure what else I could change to test that further
Since it seems to affect only the one employee's XML file AND since modifying that file to change details in order to post it online would then make that file able to be copied, it seems I won't be able to post a sample.  Too bad.
