Usb drive - ftp connects but no folders/files listed

I am sure it is something on my end, but I can't get any folders/files to show up when i ftp to my conencted usb drive.
In the linksys control panel, I have created users along with passwords. I created one user with read/write capabilities and another with just read capability.
using both a browser and cuteftp, i can connect to either account with no problem, but no files show up , it is just blank.
Thinking it may be a directory issue, I connected using cuteftp and pointed it at the directory i wanted . Again, it connected just fine but no files were listed (it is all music files)
When I am connected, with cuteftp, it appears to show me in the root directory just a / - which is why i tried pointing it to the correct directory /music.......
I am connecting using port 21 as shown in the linksys control panel.
any suggestions appreciated.
I do have access to the drive locally in my network. All of my computers can see it and share the files.....just can't get the ftp to work.
thanks

Have you assigned correct shares to those users you have created? And can you also give the exact model / brand of your device so it would be easier for other users as well.
If everyone needs to believe in something, I believe I'll have another beer..

  • Can connect but not retrieve file list (VSFTPD) from within network

    Hi!
I've got a D-Link DIR-100 wired router to which an Airport Express and an MSI Wind (Arch Linux server) is connected. I can connect to the Wind from outside the LAN, which includes SSH, HTTP and FTP. However, FTP won't work if I'm inside the LAN. The Wind has the IP 192.168.0.101 in the network, and I forwarded the port 22 for SSH, 80 and 443 for HTTP and 20-21 for FTP. I'm using OpenSSH, Apache, and VSFTPD.
When trying to connect with Transmit (OS X) I get this error message:

If I try to connect to 192.168.0.101 though it works like a charm. How come I can't use the same adress? I can visit the external IP/HTTP in a browser, I can connect to it through FTP, but I can't view the files?

Interestingly, the errors above seem to be a little bit of a
red herring. If I turn off "enable file check in and check out" in
Dreamweaver then files can be downloaded, edited and uploaded
perfectly. I can also create new files. As soon as I turn checkouts
back on, it stops working. The errors above show up in the Apache
server log even when this box is unchecked and yet everything works
correctly. Because Contribute offers no option for editing without
writing extra info files to the server it still won't work.
The Dreamweaver log shows the following when I attempt to
    check out a file:

  • W520 hangs on boot when a WD SES USB drive is connected

    Hi,
    Computer: W520
Hard drive: Western Digital - My Passport (SES Drive - encrypted)
When I boot with the usb hard drive connected to any usb port on the computer, the computer hangs forever at boot time. If I unplug the drive and reboot, everything is fine. I was able to fix the problem by disabling the USB support in the bios but then, none of the USB ports work in Windows.
I believe this is due to the SES function of the WD usb hard drive (see: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3701/~/computer-freezes-when-it-restarts-with-a-wd-m...
Also, a previous post with a similar problem was written on this board but provided no working solution (see: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W520-won-t-boot-with-SES-device-connected-to-U...
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello jeantremblay44,
As I understand the laptop cannot boot if the external USB drive is connected.
Kindly try the following troubleshooting step
You can make the USB boot disable from BIOS and make the first boot device as Hard Disk

  • Slow boot when an USB-Drive is connected

    Hi,
I have a very annoying problem: As soon as an USB-drive is connected (hard disk, iPod etc.) to
my Mac Pro it boots extremly slow (several minutes). If I disconnect the USB-drive during the waiting the booting continues immediatelly. Is there any solution for this behaviour?
    Thank you for answering.

    SWEET its fixed.
    After multiple repairs and w/e
The last thing I did was verifying my MacBook HDD (right under the *branded HDD*) n I went to bed, and my computer went into hibernation, when I woke up, I tested my computer with every connection 1 by one, than I started plugging them together.
    first just the computer
    firewire
    external monitor
    audio
    usb hub(cooling station)
    kvm switch usb (mouse+keyboard) **Critical**
    firewire+external monitor
    firewire+external monitor +usb hub+kvm switch **Critical**

the **Critical** area means thats when the computer messes up. slows down or w/e
I learned not to boot up my computer with my iphone, so I plug my iphone on the cable later.
anyway my computer I never really troubleshooted a mac until today, the command V, single mode, PR n all that good stuff...I really like the command V. i wish I can login that way everyday cause it looks cool and i can see *** is going on.
dont forget, use apple+V when rebooting and see if your USBF..etc is having issues.
If yes, repair our machine and leave it running till battery dies or go to hibernation. good day!

It's not clear whether you were able to do any backups to this drive at all.  If not, it's probably not formatted properly.  See #5 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for instructions.
If you did get any successful backups, there may be a problem with the drive, or the backups may be corrupted.  Try to repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • IPod Causes iTunes to Hang if Printer or USB drive are connected!

My iPod is a Classic 80GB
The problem began when I upgraded to iTunes 7.7 and I hoped iTunes 8 would fix this, but it has not.
*If either my printer (a HP C4280 all-in-one) or a USB memory stick are connected iTunes hangs when my iPod is connected. If both the memory stick and the printer are disconnected, iTunes will eventually recover and recognise the iPod after a minute or so. Furthermore if my iPod is connected when Windows is starting, it will hang at a black screen until the ipod is removed!!*
I have contacted Apple's phone support, but this has been unsuccessful in resolving this matter. I ended up wasting an afternoon uninstalling and installing iTunes.
    Any suggestions...? TIA...
    <Edited by Moderator>

It may not be the iPod that's causing the problem. I've had similar issues with two models of Epson printer and a Dell PC running both Vista & XP. I have one of the same printers on another machine (a different Dell model) which works fine! The symptoms I get mean that if I connect the printer, ANY external USB drive-like device fails. iPod, USB memory key, external USB hard drive etc. Windows still lists the device, and often shows one or more layers of folders however all the folders appear to be empty of files. Scary or what!?! Sometimes the printer can also prevent the PC booting up. I suspect that it takes a number of factors, hardware & software, to trigger the issue which means it's unlikely to get resolved since it's both hard to reproduce & determine exactly which subsystem is to blame. It's not ideal, but I just shut down the external drive when I want to print, then turn the printer off and the drive back on when I'm done.

  • Attaching USB Drive - Can't read AP configuration file, kills internet

    Current network:
    Airport Extreme (Sim Dual-Band)
    Mac Pro (wired Ethernet)
MacBook Pro (wired or WiFi N)
    MacBook (WiFi N)
    2 x iPhones (WiFi G)
Airport Extreme in use for several months with no problems. All Macs can read/write it's configuration.
I hooked up a 1TB My Book USB HD to the Airport Extreme via USB. All three Macs (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook) could see and read/write to the new drive. The Airport Extreme appeared in Airport Utility on all three Macs. Wired, WiFi N + G internet continued to work great... however none of the Macs could read the configuration file of the Airport Extreme. If I unplugged the USB drive all the Macs could read and write to the configuration file.
I plugged the USB drive back in and left it overnight. This morning, everything continued to work, with the exception that none of the computers could read the configuration of the AP.
Around 10am today the Macs/iPhones could no longer connect to the internet. I disconnected the USB drive and now the internet works again.

  • New MacBook Pro hard drive is full - but Nearly All Files on DropBox. Please Help!

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro and I am no longer able to download files from my email because it is out of space. I store everything on DropBox and nearly no files on the hard drive. I am looking for assistance to reduce the 72.68GB of "other" on my hard drive. Many Thanks!
    about my Mac:
    Storage Space:
<Image Edited by Host to Remove Personal Information>

You have a very small hard drive, and not enough free space for your computer to function well. You need an external hard drive. If you anticipate adding a lot more files, you can clone your existing system to the external, and then boot from it. Or you can shift some of the stuff that you currently store in Dropbox to a backup area on your external drive, and then cut down what you keep in Dropbox to contain ONLY the files that you need to be able to access when not at home. You can also change the location of your Dropbox folder, with the caveats noted at the bottom of the help article I have copied below:
    From Dropbox Help:
How do I move my Dropbox folder to a new location?
You can move your Dropbox folder to any location on your hard drive using the Dropbox desktop application. If you decide to move the folder, we strongly recommend choosing a location on the same hard drive as your operating system. Dropbox won't work correctly should the Dropbox folder ever become inaccessible.
You can select the new location from the Dropbox desktop application preferences.
Using the Dropbox desktop application on Mac OS X
Click on the Dropbox icon from your menu bar.
    The Dropbox icon
Click on the gear icon and select Preferences... from the menu.
    Click the Account tab.
Move the Dropbox folder location by selecting your folder from the drop-down menu labeled Dropbox location.
Let Dropbox move your folder and its contents to its new location.
Important: Your Dropbox folder will keep the same name as before and can't be changed by using the move feature. Dropbox will not sync your Dropbox folder if it has been manually renamed or moved through your operating system. If Dropbox loses track of your Dropbox folder, it will attempt to re-sync the folder in its entirety using its last known location.
Dropbox for Business users: If you've connected a personal and a work Dropbox, you'll see both of your Dropboxes listed here. Select the correct toggle before moving the Dropbox folder location.
    For our advanced users
If you want to put your Dropbox folder on an external drive, proceed with caution:
The Dropbox folder must be available when your computer boots and before the Dropbox desktop application starts. Some USB drives, for example, take some time to mount before your computer recognizes them. The Dropbox desktop application could start before such a drive is ready and get confused. You'll receive an error and Dropbox will give you the opportunity to relink your Dropbox account or exit if it is unable to find your Dropbox folder.
If the external drive is disconnected from the computer while Dropbox is running, there's a small chance that the application will start deleting files before realizing that the entire drive has been removed. Again: When it comes to using an external drive for your Dropbox folder, tread carefully.

  • Why wont my Mac pro start if a usb drive is connected?

....even if an empty little mac os journelled 250mb flash drive is inserted on startup, osx kinda waits until i pull it out to move off the white screen and give me the desktop...
its not a big problem because as soon as i disconnect any usb device it gets going but i was just wondering if anyone knew why it does it and if it could possibly highlight any bigger issues?
    thanks,
    steve

I am having the same problem. I got a 1.5TB Seagate FreeAgent USB hard drive. It was brand new but formatted Fat Dos. I used disk utility to partition the drive (only way it would format it) to the choice for GUID or something that said it would work with intel mac. I got the drive working fine showing up in finder etc. I rebooted the computer and it hung on a gray screen and eventually a folder with a question mark came up flashing. If I hit the power button on the Mac pro and disconnect the usb drive it boots fine. If I restart the computer without the drive attached it boots fine. If the drive is connected it will not reboot. Does the Mac think that the USB drive is the boot drive? How would this happen and how would I correct it? I need to use this drive as a backup drive for Time Machine as my time capsule is full. • Lion won't sleep when my external USB drive is connected

    Hi guys,
I've searched the forums and can't find anyone with quite the same problem I'm experiencing here. I've noticed that my power saving settings are not being actioned properly on my 2011 mac mini, in that the system never goes to sleep at the specified interval.
This isn't a problem that the system will not sleep at all, if I manually put the computer to sleep it obeys and goes to sleep instantly, also when using Plex media centre software, and allowing it to control the system sleep state, it also works fine.
After some digging, I found using pmset -g assertions that the system won't sleep normally because of the following
    Listed by owning process:
      pid 20: [0x0000012c00000014] ExternalMedia named: "com.apple.powermanagement.externalmediamounted"
At first I wondered if it was because of some network shares I had mounted, which is not the case, it does however seem to be because of my external USB hard drive. As soon as I unplugged this, the assertion went away and pmset reports sensibly and the system can sleep.
The problem is that I use the external drive to store quite a lot of media (the built-in HD is not nearly big enough to store both the OS *and* all my files), so what gives? Why will Lion refuse to go to sleep when I have an external USB HD attached, and yet sleep perfectly willingly when I explicitly tell it to do so?
Any help will be gratefully received - suggestions of buying a new external HD to see if it helps shall not be entertained and dismissed forthwith, as this setup worked perfectly well with Snow Leopard and an old style mac mini.

I am stumped too. The issue is that the 'pmset -g' command does not allow changing the ExternalMedia flag.
An observation that may be relevant to this topic is as follows: if you unmount the drive (but not physically disconnect it), sleep comes in the specified time. Upon wakeup, however, the drive is mounted again to the desktop. I've noticed this behavior with SD cards, and I assume that HDs should do the same.
If this is the case, then it may be possible to use ControlPlane (current version is ControlPlane-1.1.4) and create an "about to sleep" situation, which triggers USB disk unmounting. Haven't tried it, but was thinking to (subsequently just gave up and eject my USB  storage manually).
    Hope this helps.

  • 2.5" Firewire Drive - Permanently Connected, But Not Mounting?

I've been having trouble with a firewire drive (Seagate GoFlex FW800, 2.5" bus-powered drive) on my 2010 iMac, which recently failed, but I've found conflicting information to suggest whether the problems I've been having are part of a wider issue with OS X - for example, there are other recent posts on here which seem to be having issues with firewire drives, but slightly different issues.
Basically, I wanted it always connected (obviously it spins itself down when not being accessed). However, if I shut down or sleep my iMac, 90% of the time when I turn it back on the drive would be visible, but would just hang indefinitely if I attempted to access it (until I pulled the cable out). If I plugged it straight back in, it worked fine from then on, until I next shut my iMac down.
I've seen some things on the internet suggesting that a recent update to OS X broke it (i'm fully up-to-date), but I can't remember when it started going wrong so not sure whether that's true.
I've seen other things on the internet that suggest that certain brands of drive cannot be made to restart with the Mac, and that only certain firewire controllers are supported. But i'm sure I used to be able to do this when I first got the drive...?
I've also seen some suggestions from last year that it's an occasional problem that can be resolved by resetting SMC and PRAM - both of which I've tried and did nothing. I also tried disk repair, which had no effect.
So, can anyone shed any light on this. Is it a known problem with OS X, that certain FW800 drives aren't supported? Is it just a glitch that sometimes happens? Does anyone else use a Seagate GoFlex FW800 drive without these problems?
Any suggestions / experiences greatly appreciated.
    David

You saying the external drive works with USB and doesn't with FW and you only have a FW400 cable?  I assume your mac uses FW800.  FW800 requires a 9-pin connector.  FW400 a 6-pin.  Cables and adapters exist to go from 9-pin to 6-pin.  But I don't think plugging a 6-pin FW400 cable into 9-pin FW800 socket will work.  That's probably your problem.

just inherited a mac book pro coming from a mac mini and it sees everything was the same even after upgrading to lion but for some reason the hard drive is half full but i thought i deleted all files the previous owner had so id like to be able to get rid of the unneccesarily used space but dont know how to simply do it without fully starting over

In as much as the previous owner did not erase and reinstall the OS when he sold you the MBP the best thing to do is to start over. Do an Erase & Install of the OS. Then you can set up the MBP with your own information and password.
