USB Hard drive, permission issue on one partition

Hi,
I have an issue with my USB hard drive, when I pluged it the 3 partitions are mounted, and 2 of them grant access to the users group:
mount
/dev/sdc6 on /media/usbhd-sdc6 type ext2 (rw,relatime)
/dev/sdc1 on /media/usbhd-sdc1 type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096,default_permissions)
/dev/sdc5 on /media/usbhd-sdc5 type vfat (rw,relatime,utf8,gid=100,umask=002)
ls -l /media/
drwxrwxr-x 1 root users 4096 Jun 29 22:21 usbhd-sdc1
drwxrwxr-x 18 root users 16384 Dec 31 1969 usbhd-sdc5
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 29 22:21 usbhd-sdc6
I read the wiki page about udev, but I can not solve this issue.
PS : HAL is removed from my daemons list.

> You can write on "usb" because the right are : drwxrwxrwx
They appear only when I use 'sudo mount -o rw,noauto,async,user,umask=1000' instead of plain 'sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb2'.
I use vfat for that USB stick, so maybe that's why it works for me. The first two listings in your first post show the drives in different order, but of course the mountpoints show that the offending drive is ext2 not vfat, my bad.
Edit: This is how my ext3 USB stick behaves like:
[karol@black test]$ sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb
[karol@black test]$ mount | grep sdb1
/dev/sdb1 on /mnt/usb type ext3 (rw)
[karol@black test]$ ls -l /mnt
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 karol users 4096 07-03 01:08 usb
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-09-14 usb2
This time /mnt/usb is an ext3. As you can see, there's no root, I (karol) an the owner, so I can rw to my heart's content. Maybe you should change the ownership - 'chown' (man chown if you're not familiar w/ that command).

  • USB Hard Drive Permissions Issue

    Hi,
I just attached a new USB hard drive to my iMac. I would like to make it so only I can have write access to the drive; I want my kids to be able to see the files but not modify or delete.
I tried by unchecking 'Ignore permissions', and setting permissions where I have read/write, and others have read, but when I switch to one of my kids' accounts, they have full control, and in fact they are shown as owner.
Thanks for any help you can provide,
    Andy

    Hello Asopos,
I have difficulty in reading the screenshots, you can post in the corresponding forum or add some comments.

If my understanding is right, in the USB-hard-drive(NTFS), all folders in the USB drive have the unknown account and the root of the drive don’t have the account.
It is a SID. Possible that this account was removed and permission has not been removed.
Please take ownership of the folder and check if we can normally deleted the account.

  • Airport Extreme Shared USB Hard Drive Performance Issues

I just picked up a new Air Extreme and attached a new Western Digital Passport via USB powered hub (have printer as well). All is working well, however, I am finding performance (especially copying files from my computer to the network HD) to be quite slow. For example, I was trying to copy a 3GB folder with about 1000 files and the copy dialog indicates that it will take about 30 hours. I was able to copy directly to the HD when plugged into computer's USB in a matter of minutes. When I try to download same folder from the net drive to my laptop, it takes about 1 hour. Note: I have Comcast Cable hi-speed so not sure how much is related to this knowing that they do have different download/upload speeds.
I would appreciate any feedback, tips and advice on optimizing performance of my USB drive when shared over the network. Thanks.

How do you have your hard drive formatted? If you are using a Western Digital Passport, you will want to create a separate Mac partition so that you can copy very large files (+4GB). By default, I believe it is FAT32. I had to do this (Mac partition) with my back up drive because I have VMWare Fusion images that easily exceed this.
The new network drive I attached is also a Western Digital, but I didn't reformat it (yet) as I knew I wasn't going to have large files, but I am wondering if maybe I should do this. Unfortunately, then my Windows machines would not be able to read it easily.

  • Hard Drive Permission Issues

I replaced my 200gb drive in my MBP with a 500gb today.
The 200 had two 100gb-ish partitions on it.
The second partition is now showing a little lock icon on it and I cant open it.
Anyone know of anything to remedy this, I would like the info on the disk.
Changing file permissions in "Show Info" doesn't work and chown'ing the drive in terminal doesn't change anything.

I know this is an old thread but i've run into the same issue and can't change my permissions. A restart also wasn't the solution.

  • External USB Hard Drive causes menu problem - menu items flash

    Greetings:
I have a external USB hard drive (250 GB) that is partitioned into 3 hard drives. Two hard drives are formatted in MacOS standard and one is formatted in MacOS extended. I had to reformat the last drive in MacOS extended because the Macbook would not let me edit files on the drive.
The problem is that when I connect to the drives, the menu malfunctions (I cannot see the date and time and the menu items flash). Dismounting the drives solves the problem.
Do I need to reformat the hard drives? Or do I need a new USB drive?
    Thank you.
    EA

Hmm, someone else had a similar problem.  Note the ":: Loading root filesystem module...-e" line.  That "-e" shouldn't be there.  It should be, instead, the module for the filesystem.
As a workaround for right now, you can add your filesystem module to the MODULES array, and remove the "filesystems" hook.
In that case, you'll probably want rootdelay=* to allow the drive some time to settle, and rootfstype=* to speed up filesystem detection while in kinit.
By the way, what filesystem do you have on that machine?  Can you tell me what
    /usr/lib/klibc/bin/fstype < /dev/sda1
outputs on a running system (you may need to be root, or add yourself to the "disk" group or something similar) - /dev/sda1 should be replaced if the usb drive is not sda1

  • Partition External Usb hard drive

    Hi,
Can I partition a 500GB external usb hard-drive to 2 partitions (nfts and HFS)
The HFS part is for using with Time-Machine (150 GB) and the nfts for storage of photos etc. trough Windows.
Is it possible to back-up on a partition with Time Machine?
I know that it is impossible to partition to nfts with the standard Mac program, but it is possible with Gparted Live-cd (the one Ubuntu uses).
    Can all that be done?
    Thanks on purpose
    TheM4inframe

set up two partitions both fat32.
erase one and reformat as the apple format. plug the drive into the winbox, use administration>computer management>storage to find and reformat the fat 32 partition as ntfs.
you can also format both as mac, then have win reformat one (I think)

    Yes.

Possibly by using an Airport Express, but depends on what type of port connection the printer requires.

  • Partitioning and Formatting USB Hard Drive

I'm using a FreeAgent USB hard drive on my system, but placed a lot of files on it before realizing that Mac can't write to an NTFS file system. I've got about 35 GB of files on a 250GB drive. So, two questions:
    1. Is there something I can use to partition the drive and format part of it to FAT32 and part of it to the Mac format (realizing that I won't be able to read the Mac formatted partition in Windows).
    2. Is it possible to partition the drive without removing the files that are now on it and reformatting (obviously leaving part of it as NTFS)?
I'll probably be able to do 1, but just thought I'd ask about 2 for information purposes.
    Thanks,

I suppose I could just format it FAT, but I have some vague notion that the Mac format will work better with the Mac OS, especially for backing up. I'd primarily use the Mac partition for backup, and for storage of video files that just take up too much space on the MacBook internal HD. Don't know how realistic that is, and I'm also not sure which backup program would be best suited. I'm pretty new to the Mac environment, and am not even all that sure whether to keep the *.dmg files that I've used to install several programs that I purchased for the Mac.

Yes- it is a Mac. I went through adobes system requirements and re- downloaded supportive software. The notice seems to happen near the end of the down load with the messages above. I'll look into your suggestion. Thank you- appreciated.

  • Access exFAT formatted USB hard drive partition through Time Capsule 2013

I am trying to move data, mostly music, from my old PC to a wirelessly accessible HDD that we can get to from our MacBooks running OS 10.6.8.  I have a 2013 Time Capsule with a USB hard drive attached, but I can't see the exFAT partition containing all of the data (on my Mac).  I can see the other two partitions, which are formatted for a Mac.  I can also see the exFAT partition on my Mac when it is plugged in directly, I just can't access that partition through the Time Capsule.  Any ideas on how to remedy this?  Or if there is a better solution for moving this data.  We don't care about accessing the data from the PC any longer.  We are going to get rid of it.  We just need a place to keep all of the data where we can get to it.

You need to connect the drive directly to a Mac, copy the data to another location, reformat that partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and put the data back onto it.

  • MAC Mini & 2.5 USB Hard Drive Issue

Strange thing happening with a new MAC Mini:
For Christmas, I bought my wife a brand new MAC mini. Everything has been working fine. So, for our anniversary, I bought her a 120 gig USB hard drive (I know, I'm such a romantic
Anyway, ever since I hooked up the hard drive (USB Drive) to her system, it seems that when I first turn the MINI on, the keyboard and mouse completely stop working. once, I had to hold the power button in to hard boot it, then, when it restarted, everything was working fine again.
Tonight, when I turned the MINI on, it did the same thing. No keyboard or mouse. Then, after I hard booted it, the mini never booted up. Black screen. USB hard drive light was on, but, no MAC power light and screen was black.
Now, I just unplugged the USB drive and all is working fine again.
It seems that the USB hard drive being plugged in while powering the MINI up is giving me some grief.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what can be happening here? It is a brand new MINI with Leopard installed. I highly doubt I have a defective MAC because everything was fine until I plugged a USB HDD into it. With the drive unplugged, it seems that it works fine.
No Operating System(s) are on the USB drive. Just pictures and movie files.
Here is the drive I got her:

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

  • USB Hard Drives Keep Disconnecting or Not Responding

    Hi,
This is a long post - but one that I hope someone can offer advice on.
    The Hardware
Mac Pro running OSX 10.8 (but this has happened on all versions of the OS i.e. 10.6/.7 etc)
3 x Internal SATA Hard Drives - All working perfectly.
    External Drives:
2 x Western Digital My Book 1TB USB Hard Drives
    1 x Seagate 750GB Hard Drive with USB2 connectivity
2 x IcyBox Dual Bay USB2 hard Drive enclosures using JMicron Chipsets - these enclosures have 2 x 1TB Western Digital Green in each (totaling 4 TB across the 2 enclosures).
    D-Link 7 Port USB2 Hub
    The Problem
    - USB Hard Drives connected to the Mac are ejected from the system without notice and at random times AND/OR
    - The external hard drive remains mounted, but when trying to write to the drive/partitions, Finder throws an error message up saying the operation cannot be completed - error code -50.
    - Time Machine:  TM will back up successfully several times, before eventually throwing an error up that it cannot create the folders required on the drive.
    - The only way to be able to use the drives again is either remount the drive, or in some case, it is required to completely power the drive down and then reconnect.
    Re-creating the problem
I have honestly not found a sure-fire way of replicating the problem.  It seems completely random.  It happens when I am actually sat at the computer, but it also happens when I am away from the computer.
In the past - my Time Machine hard drive has been one of the Western Digital MyBook drives.  I also used the second MyBook for SuperDuper backups (extra redundancy).  The 4TB drives in the IcyBox enclosures have been used to backup my ripped movie collection.
Recently however - I decided to have 2 of the 1TB drives in the IcyBox enclosures to be TM and SuperDuper backups.  I have however reverted TM back to one of the Western Digital drives, purely for testing purposes.  SuperDuper is backing up to one of the 1TB drives in the IcyBox.
I am trying various things to see if I can find the issue, but it is such a random event that it is taking ages to even come close to find a problem.  Sometimes the drives will stay active for a few days, sometimes only a few hours, even minutes.
    Theories
I have several theories as to why my USB drives continually disconnect.
    1.  The D-Link USB Hub.
Could connecting the drives through the hub be causing the problem?  I don't really see how, unless it is a documented case that D-Link USB hubs do not play nice with OSX?  To try and rule this out I have connected the current Time Machine back up drive (Western Digital MyBook) directly to the USB port on the back of the computer.  The SuperDuper (IcyBox enclosure) drive is currently connected through the D-Link hub.  I have removed all the other drives from the enclosures - so at present I have only 2 external drives connected (1 x 1TB Western Digital MyBook, 1 x 1TB Western Digital Green inside one of the IcyBox dual-bay enclosures - connected through D-Link Hub).
    2. JMicron Chipset
I have done a bit of research on the internet and there are a few indications that perhaps JMicron SATA-to-USB controller chipsets found in a lot of external hard drive enclosures (including the dual bay IcyBox external enclosures that I have) do not play nice with OSX.  If the JMicron chipsets in the 2 IcyBox enclosures is a problem - would that cause issues with other USB devices on the USB bus off the Mac?  (i.e. can the JMicron chipset in the enclosures cause devices such as the WD MyBook drives which I assume use a non-JMicron chipset, to experience similar failures?)
    3.  Green Hard Drives
As I have said, I have 4 Western Digital Green 1TB hard drives inside the IcyBox Dual Bay Enclosures.  Could the fact that these drives are 'Green' be causing a problem?  They do go to sleep after x number of minutes, but they do wake up when required.  But could on the occasion when I have problems, could this be caused by the 'Green' feature interrupting OSX in waking the drives?  Coupled with JMicron chipset, could this be compounding the issue?
    Possible Solutions
I am prepared to spend money on replacement drives and/or enclosures etc - but I would hate to spend x amount of money and have the same problem.  So I am hoping to get some advice on what drives/enclosures are more than likely to work flawlessly with OSX.
    Thanks for reading!

FYI - re: the SuperDuper drive that is in one of the IcyBox enclosures.
I just opened this drive up in Finder.  I heard the drive wake up, but when I came to copy a file over (tried various file sizes) - I got the error -50 message.
Here is the info from Console.

  • Internal hard drive replacement issue...(a bit wordy)

I am the second user of this white core duo MacBook - the boss's hand-me-down.
The original hard drive was almost full when I received the unit, so after using it for a while I decided to replace the internal drive. I have an external WD 320GB "My Passport" formatted for Mac use that works just fine - it keeps the Time Machine backups on one partition and a Carbon Copy Cloner image of the original internal drive on another.
I recently bought a WD 250GB Scorpio Blue (WD2500BPVT-00ZEST0), stuck it in the computer, formatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled), GUID) as a single partition and put the CCC image of the original drive on it. All was good. New drive booted and functioned as expected. Four days later it failed (question mark appearing on restart attempts). The disk utility applications in four different OS's failed to recognize the disk. Short story is WD sent me a replacement, but 320GB rather than the 250 - a WD3200BPVT-00ZEST0.
I eventually got the new drive partitioned and formatted and installed Snow Leopard from my update disk. All this transpired with the drive docked in an external USB dock.
During the OS install I took the opportunity to set it up in my name rather than my boss's name. (was this a mistake and the source of my problem, I wonder?)
I can boot from this newly built drive when it is docked, BUT NOT when it's installed internally in the laptop. It is recognized as an available start drive during restart, and I get the "apple", but the spinning wheel keeps on spinning without actually booting (or at least I get tired of waiting and the fan keeps spooling up - I eventually just turn the power off).
Is this drive, at 320Gb, too big for this laptop to use internally? (but the 250GB one worked)
Did I make a mistake in creating a different default ID (me rather than the boss) while installing the OS? Is the laptop "remembering" the user setup from the original small drive somehow and refusing to work with the new drive's new user?
This is my first "Mac" experience and I really like the way the OS treats me and the "look and feel" of the GUI, but this has been somewhat frustrating. (I WILL stick with it though, I plan on buying a new MBP next summer.)
Am I forever destined to live with the tiny original drive and be relegated to carrying around Passport drive to get most of my data files?
I now have three drives I can boot from, but I'd really like to have the big new one actually usable from inside the laptop rather than sitting in a dock (with all it's cables).
    Thanks for reading this far.

    OK, so push ahead...
    He's dead, Jim.
The hard drive works outside of the laptop.
Your USB enclosure probably runs slower or something.
Has there been some (unknown to me) change in the specifications of 2.5" SATA hard drives since the original one was spec'd for this laptop that renders the newer ones unusable?
I prefer to have other people keep up with this stuff instead of me. I buy pretty much all of my equipment from OWC. If they sell it, it will work with your Mac. Even if you don't buy from OWC (but you should), if you buy the same model numbers that they sell, you should be fine. OWC doesn't sell this drive. For me, that would be a red flag.
(WD claims their "advanced formatting" is OS X compatible without the realignment required by certain versions of Windows, but is it possible this is a hardware related issue with the MacBook?)
OWC does sell the "regular formatting" version of this drive (WDGWD3200BEVT). Perhaps it only works in newer machines. The WD support page also mentioned that cloning can screw up the drive. I never recommend cloning except in some very specific circumstances. I do that not because I know something, but because I don't. I'm not entirely sure what those clone tools are doing underneath and if they've been tested on these new drives.
Maybe put it back into the enclosure and partition it again into a single volume. Make sure to use the GUID option. Don't do anything else with it. Put it back into the Mac and try again. If it fails again, get a different drive.

  • USB Hard Drive corrupted - twice!

ever since my recent (and otherwise very happy) transition to macs i've had trouble with an external USB hard drive which i use to store my music collection and back up. first there were issues with not recognising the drive for ages but these were fixed by a new case and then, more recently my drive has been corrupted - twice.
first time i immediately assumed it was because the drive was two years old and had travelled quite a bit with me so i replaced it with a brand new spanking one. however, two weeks later the exact same problem occurred. all data lost. osx recognises that the drive is there, and it's name but the folder structure is gone and replaced by some garbled charachters that start 'USB£@$@%£$%' or similar.
first time this occurred i was in the middle of some file transfers and the drive itself started making a few strange noises. second time was during the nightly back up i have running with superduper! at the same time as downloading stuff. i have the drive partitioned - 100GB osx extended format for the back up and 200GB fat32 for my music colleection. in the recent manifestation it doesn't mount the back up partition, but mounts the music one. i can see the back up partition in disk utility greyed out and it agrees that there is a fault, but it can't find any problems with my music partition - which now has no data on it.
i am completely at a loss here and my last few hour's research on the net have yeilded no results so if anyone can help i'd be very very grateful. i connect the drive through usb hub and to the left usb port if that makes a difference. i had absolutely no problems with a similar set up on my windows laptop for years. is it something to do with how os x handles external drives? or should i get a new case/usb 2.0 hub? all tips appreciated

i do use unmount - but what if finder crashes in the middle of an operation, which may have been what happened first time, and even the second time (but i wasn't around to see what happened), would that garble the folder structure entirely?
i live in the heart of a big city in the UK in a (relatively) modern building and haven't seen any power failures at all (resent alarm clocks etc) or are you talking about some level of super-quick fluctuation i've never noticed before? or did you mean something internal to the drive casing or something?
no error messages related to the usb hub so far. all other devices connected though it work just fine - ipod, printer etc.
the first drive was a hitachi, the second a western digital. the casing was bought from maplin and seems pretty generic - though both problems have occurred since i got the new casing which was about a month before i got my MBP.
it's a serial drive and i have no idea about the jumpers. first time i put everything together, but the second time the drive failed, i bought the replacement drive from the IT guys who were doing the data recovery (which didn't work) and they put it all together for me.
this doesn't have a fan, which the old one did, though it does have a metal casing - do you think heat build up after prolonged heavy use could cause problems?

  • Imaging from external DVD player or an external usb hard drive

    Hey,
At the High School i work at we are running Netware 6.0 SP5 and Zenworks
4.01 ir6. We have Zen Partitions installed on most computers to store a
local image in case the the computer needs to be re-imaged.
However, we have a dilemma. Every now and then a hard drive will go in a
    computer.
When we replace the hard drive with a new one, we install the Zen
Partition, do the config and then our last step is to bring down an image.
Unfortunately our only means of dropping down an image is from the network
either through normal imaging or through multicast sessions.
When we drop an image down from the network which takes up network
bandwidth, it causes slow downs on the users computers and they start
complaining. Our network is running at 100mb.
Is there any way possible to image from an external DVD player or an
external usb hard drive when dropping down an image to a new hard drive in
the computer? Currently I have all my Zen Images on the external USB
Maxtor 160gb hard drive and I also have Zen Images burnt to DVD's.
If so, how do I go about doing this and is there documents on doing this?
    Thanks!!!
