USB monitor

I have a USB monitor.  Can I connect it to my HP ENVY TouchSmart m6n100 156 as an extension monitor?  If so, how?

Hi there ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I would be happy to assist you further but I would need the model number. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?I also found a document called Connecting a Monitor, Projector or TV (Windows 8) for you to read in the meantime. Please re-post and let me know. Thank you! Have a great day!

  • HP 2311C USB Monitor will not work with Windows 8.1

Just done a clean install of Windows 8.1 on my HP Spectre XT Pro.
The HP2311C monitor is working fine as a USB hub and the built-in Network card but will not detect the monitor as a USB monitor.
This was working when it was a Windows 8 build and previous Windows 7 build.
I have downloaded and installed all the HP drivers and run the HP Support Assistant to make sure everything is up to date.
My two other collegues who have done the same upgrade with the same kit and are also having the problem.
If we plug the HP2311C into a Windows 8 or Windows 7 machine the USB monitor works fine.
Tried several reboots, connections and uninstalls, which have not worked. Also there are no event logs to suggest an anwser.

I am having the same problem with my SPECTRE PRO 13 and Windows 8.1 - most unhappy about it. There is no 8.1 driver for the L2311c and I get no help out of HP as to when there might be one . These items are not cheap in NZ and I feel I have wasted my $$. It works fine on XP!

  • Tablet or USB monitor as second display

    Hello all,
I am in the need to have a second monitor, and it needs to be a low profile monitor (about the size of a tablet). Has anyone had luck using a tablet as a secondary monitor in Arch? I tried Splashtop Streamer and that didn't work. I couldn't get the monitor to see my PC, which is connected to the network via physical wire.
I also saw TwomonUSB, anyone have experience with this?

EDIT: changed topic to reflect tablet or USB monitor to use as a second display.

Been reading up on VNC, and apparently, it can be set up to use the tablet as a second monitor. Has anyone done this with Arch? Any help would be appreciated. So far I have these two links for reference:

  • Using a Samsung Digital Photo Frame SPF-83H as USB monitor

I have a Samsung Digital Photo Frame SPF-83H that I can use as a USB monitor in a PC but does'nt work in my Mac Mini.
    Any driver or adaptator?
    Thanks a lot!

Did you ever get this working - the Samsung photo frame as a second monitor?
DisplayLink released a Mac driver on 10/17. You can get it here:

  • Connecting mac mini to USB monitor didn't work!!

I connected new Mac mini(2007 model) with the latest HP USB monitor. Nothing got displayed on the monitor. Then I need to connect mac-mini to another VGA connector monitor. But still want to know to connect USB monitor with mac-mini as this is my target setup.

    Thank you.
I used Tiger OS specific drivers from the following link.
    www.displaylink.com/support/mac_downloads.php
Now it's working but not 100%. Upon starting of the mac-mini monitor works fine. But later when I switch off and switch on the monitor, then it doesn't work. Looks like monitor off -on trigger is not handled in the driver.
I will check with the driver like you have suggest and then acknowledge.

  • Premiere pro Crash with AOC USB Monitor

I just purchased an AOC 1659FWU USB Monitor. The monitor works fine with AfterFX but when I try to launch Premiere Pro CC It crashes almost instantly. I know that it has something to do with the GPU and how it decides which one to use. I have uninstalled the monitor to trouble shoot it and once I did the program launched fine. Wondering if there are any workarounds or updates for this issue.

    Saludos,

  • Thinkpad W520 + Bios 1.33 + Toshiba USB Monitor?

    Howdy all!
Well, the good news with BIOS 1.33 is that my laptop now runs at full-speed when I am on battery (which I really appreciate Lenovo getting this to work)!
But I have discovered that my 14" Toshiba USB monitor that I have been using when I am on the road no longer works either on DC or AC.
I really do not need high end graphics (GPU). I just need to be able to have two monitors for development / demos.
Any ideas on what settings I need to set to get my USB monitor working again?
Thanks in advance and Happy Thanksgiving!
    Aggie85

I don't want to hijack this thread but DO want to know what you find to be the advantage of a USB monitor. I am happy to do this over regular e-mail.
I am a commercial photographer and often shoot "tethered" with the laptop on the same tripod next to the camera. I want to place a secondary monitor on another table or stand for the client(s) so we aren't bumping nto each other behind the tripod. I had planned to get a reasonable VGA monitor in the same goofy widescreen layout. (All widescreens are goofy to me. I liked the 3:2 layout on my recently retired X61t.)
I realize just as I write this that I bet there are not many retail units with this weird native resolution... hmm. Perhaps a native 1920x1200 unit will display a skinnier 1920x1080 image with a black bar at top and bottom.
So, is there experience in your demos that makes a USB monitor better?
I do want to have access to the higher speeds of the GPU, even during the shooting session.
Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts. I can be reached at

  • An Arch64-friendly PNP USB Monitor?

So I run a couple different servers, one of which does not even have a video card (well it did but there were problems with it so it was removed). Every once in a while something will go wrong and I'll need to plug in a monitor to directly log into the machine and fix the problem. So I was thinking, it would be awesome if I could just plug in a USB monitor and it wouldn't have to be anything fancy - I only need about 640x480 pixels and no graphical or 3d support, just text... Does anyone know if this exists and then if it would work with Arch64?

Here's the latest Intel chipset driver package:
    http://mail.station-drivers.com/index.php/downloads/Drivers/Intel/Chipset-Device-Software/Intel-Chip...
Install it with the -overall switch to make sure everything gets updated. This might overwrite your Rapid Storage driver, so re-install that one again afterwards.

  • AOC E1649FWU USB monitor

I bought the AOC usb monitor with the idea of using it as my main display with arch running on an odroid c1. Before setting up that system, I am trying to get in to work as a 2nd monitor with my laptop - also running arch. I have read that the drivers are available with xorg after linux kernel 3.9 and later (I believe i am running 4.0.1-1), but no luck. Any help? Thanks.

In the wiki post that you directed me to I followed the directions to set the display (# xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 1 0) and load udl (# modprobe udl). I also created a file at /etc/modules-load.d/udl.conf to load udl at startup.
After I do all this, I can see the 2nd monitor when I go to Settings>Displays, and I can set the usage for the 2nd monitor. Every time I reboot, I have to repeat steps of setting provider source and loading udl.
Ugh ... this seems more work than it is worth. The whole idea is to use the monitor as a primary screen for the ODroid when I get my system running - is that even possible?

  • X1 and USB monitor compatibility

Hello! I can't connect Thinkpad X1 (1294-2NG) to a monitor L2230XWa (5453-HB1) via USB interface. It does not matter I use USB2.0 or USB3.0. Any time when Windows 7(64bit) starts to recognize a monitor it reports a signal lost and computer hangs with fan running on high speed. Does anybody know is this configuration compatible at all?

    hey Atterdag,
with regards to this, could you uninstall the current display drivers for your X1 then plugin the L2230 .
Let windows install its generic drivers and then try the monitor again. If it works, go to http://support.lenovo.com and reinstall the display driver of yout X1.

I just upgraded to Lion with my MacBook Pro and now my Samsung SyncMaster LD 200g monitor will no longer work. If you can help please do.

  • The quest for real estate (USB- monitor question)

    The short question:
Any advice or gotchas regarding USB->External Monitor adaptors?  Especially, if the monitor accepts both VGA and DVI, which type of adaptor would be better for performance?  Advice about brands/models is also welcome, but I live in Japan, so I may not have easy access to the same stuff as you.
    The details:
The need for more frequent travel is forcing me to transition from desktop to laptop life for the first time ever.  But when I'm at home or in one place for awhile I want to "pretend it's a desktop" - with an external mouse, keyboard, speakers, and two 19" monitors for video editing (in that situation I don't really care about the screen on the laptop itself - it doesn't match the shape, size, and color tone of the others anyway).  Unfortunately, the laptop I bought (this Acer) only has one HDMI port - no DVI or VGA.  The monitors I own can do either DVI or VGA.  I bought a cable to convert from HDMI to DVI for one of them - so far, so good (I haven't tried using it for PPro yet, but I assume it would be fine).  But the question is what to do about the second external monitor.  Apparently I can get an adaptor for around $50-80 to go from USB3.0 to either VGA or DVI with a driver to tell Windows what is going on, but some comments on the web say that video play is choppy - that would not bode well for editing work.  One guy said that he got a USB->DVI adaptor and had performance troubles, and traded it in for a USB->VGA one that worked better, but I would have assumed the opposite or no difference at all, so I'd like to know what you smart Adobe users think.
I also considered getting a dual monitor docking station like this Kensington and have the convenience of everything on one connection.  But I don't know if having both monitors on one USB3.0 interface is asking too much of it, and the price tag is a bit high.  If it has some sort of performance boosting hardware in it, that would be great, but the specs don't seem to mention it.  But maybe it doesn't matter.  I am a novice regarding graphics hardware and its related interfaces, so any advice is appreciated.

why are you using 2 monitors instead of the laptop panel and 1 monitor?
Because the laptop display is smaller, a different aspect ratio, and a different color tone (I tried adjusting them to match each other to no avail - they are apparently completely different display technologies).  Also, I like having a long timeline in PPro that runs across the two displays, but that only makes sense if the two displays are the same height and resolution.  Currently I arrange the second monitor above the laptop, not beside it, because the widths are much more similar than the heights.
However the latency and software with the USB video adapters have not been great and all the experience I have had with clients has required them to remove the adapters when using an editing application.
Well, the whole point of doing this is for PPro (for other uses, mismatched displays work okay), so if latency kills me, I'll return the adaptor and hate laptop life, I guess... Seriously, if the latency is so bad that I can't use it even with PPro panels arranged per JEShort01's suggestion, I don't know what my next move would be.  I could try to arrange my PPro panels with this vertical inboard-external display combo, but I think the colors, resolution, etc. will forever be disorienting.  I know that many people use PPro on laptops, but having gotten used to my desktop with dual 19"-ers, I have trouble imaging how they survive...
If the DVI is digital then you have better specifications than DVI Analog.
I've never heard of DVI Analog (I thought the D in DVI stood for Digital) and have no idea which kind is in the back on my monitors.  But I have seen these monitors when connected via both types of connectors and there is not any perceptible visual difference, if that is what you are asking.
However the posts you have seen regarding VGA would be accurate since VGA is analog and doesn't require the digital hand shake.
Aha!  That's the sort of nuts-and-bolts info I didn't know and was hoping for.  To sum it up, you're saying that in your experience USB display adaptors in general have trouble with internal latency, but between the two interfaces, VGA has a bit less overhead.  Okay, I'll try VGA in a reputable brand and test thoroughly.  I'll buy it at my favorite huge chain store that has good return policies, and I'll report back.

  • Displaylink usb monitor adapter - working but still a few issues

    hello,
i didn't want to necro this post
so at work i'm using arch on a 2013 mac air. works very well.
i have a 2nd monitor using the mini-displayport, works very well.
i can run this in portrait or landscape mode.
i was given a displaylink usb to dvi external monitor link. i believe it is this model.
so, i followed the directions on the wiki...
    - installed  `xf86-video-fbdev`
    - blacklisted `udl`
    - and ran `xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 1 0`
now in arander i can enable the 3rd monitor and use it
but there are 2 remaining issues:
    1. i can only use the external monitors in landscape mode. if i rotate it into portrait x crashes. when i do not use the usb link the mini-dp monitor works in portrait, but w/ both neither can be in portrait mode
    2. i cannot seem to script the `xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 1 0` in my .xinirc file. i tried to run it in the beginning or at the end right before loading my wm (herbstluftwm) and neither seems to work.
    any suggestions?
    thank you
    --- update ---
    so i wrote a script that automates the xrandr provider output source bits. it's kind of hacky but i can live w/ it. i still cannot get monitors in portrait mode ;~;

This is what I am running:
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    #MOD_BLACKLIST=() #deprecated
    MODULES=(fuse !eeepc_laptop !snd-pcsp)
and I load eeepc_laptop in the background in rc.local - that makes my boot considerably faster.
    For daemons:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng crond hal rpcbind nfs-common netfs wicd alsa @laptop-mode @firestarter @openntpd)
You can replace fam with gaim (and you don't need it in your daemons) and you don't need dbus...
    For policy kit:

  • Sleep, USB, monitor and keyboard keys (eject, volume, mute) problems fixed!

I wanted to post this in another thread, but it had been archived.
My computer would not sleep under 10.4.8, screen would go black, fans and hard drives would whirl and I would have to hard restart to get out of sleep. Also, keyboard eject and volume keys would randomly stop functioning, the monitors brightness control disapearing in System Preferences and the built in USB ports for the monitor becoming erratic and unreliable. So after trying about everything, I finally gave in and did a fresh install (backed up user files to another drive, formated and installed). After the install was done my computer would still not go into sleep properly or out if it without a hard restart. So, for the sleep issue I deleted the preferences files recomended in this thread:
