USB Powered??

Is the USB port on the back of the Airport Extreme powered??
I have a WD My Passport external HDD (one of the small 2.5" drives) which does not have an external power source - its powered by USB.
Will I be able to use this on the Airport Extreme?

  • What is the best USB powered portable 1TB hard drive for a macbook pro that allows Time machine to work, windows (thru Parallels software) and mac storage and is available in Australia?

What is the best USB powered portable 1TB hard drive for a macbook pro that allows Time machine to work, windows (thru Parallels software) and mac storage and is available in Australia?

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

  • Can Airport Express or Extreme power a USB powered hard drive?

I cannot find the info in the specs.
Best Buy tells me that, in principle, wireles routers with USB ports don't have the power required by USB-powered hard drives.
On the other hand, I am thinking it would make sense for Airport Express to do that, since it would be very useful on a trip.
    Thanks

OOs, I just saw the Apr 2011 thread. Answer is no

  • Unrecognized Seagate 320 GB External USB Powered HD

I just purchased a new 320 GB USB External Hard Drive. It is powered through the USB. My 15" PowerBook G4 does not recognize its existence when I plug it in to the USB port. I have tried both ports. They both work with a mouse. I also plugged the drive into my son's laptop pc running Windows XP. It was recognized and worked flawlessly. I have heard rumored that PowerBook USB ports do not supply enough power for external 2-1/2" drives. Could that be the problem? I have not discovered any way to even "see" the drive, in disk utilities, etc.
I just ordered a new 15" MacBook Pro which will be delivered next week. I plan to use the external drive with Time Machine. I was just testing the drive by plugging it into my PowerBook. Is it likely to work with the MacBook Pro? I sure hope so. Otherwise I have a useless external drive. I guess my son could use it. Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Since my previous post above, Santa has brought me a new unibody MacBook Pro. Unlike my old Powerbook or almost any other Powerbook G4, it cheerfully powers each of my family's four 250GB Seagate FreeAgent Go USB-powered hard drives without using the dual-corded dock. The MBP's USB ports evidently put out more power than any Powerbook G4 could ever be relied on to provide. I'm delighted about that, and also delighted with the Freeagent Go drives: beautifully designed, well made, warranted for five years, and for $80 each at Costco, a true steal.

  • How to keep USB powered while in sleep

I've read about people wanting to turn off USB power while in sleep mode. I would like to know how to turn it on so I can charge USB-powered devices without having the system on. I would prefer it to only work while plugged in to A/C power, but won't mind if it's all the time.
No power option under system settings, only "energy saver" and nothing there controlling USB power.

When the system goes to sleep, the I/O controller turns off all outputs. The system has to be on in order for you to power your USB devices.

  • Can't get USB powered external speakers to work...

I'm using Windows XP Pro, and for some reason, iTunes won't play through a pair of Logitech V-20 portable USB-powered speakers. I've checked all the settings I can think of, and everything seems to be set okay. If I use WMP, the sound goes through the speakers....and if I generate a computer sound (beep) through iTunes, it plays through the speakers. However, iTunes music is only playing through the laptop speakers. In fact, these speakers have a play/pause button that communicates with iTunes....and also previous track/next track buttons that also work with iTunes. If I plug different speakers into the headphone port, they work fine....and I didn't have this problem on a previous XP Pro computer when using iTunes (although I think it was an earlier version). I'm running the latest version of iTunes. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem?

  • USB Powered HDD fails - Alu iMac 2.4GHz 21 inch

    Hey folks,
I have an aluminium iMac 2.4GHz 21 inch model.
I have been using externally powered USB and FW devices for a while and had no issues. However, I just picked up a USB powered HDD and it cannot consistently transfer data. This same drive works perfectly on my Dell laptop, and I tried another USB powered drive from a friend (which I also know works) on my iMac and it has the same problem - cannot do any sort of mass data transfer.
I have a powered USB 2 hub (4 port Belkin) and obviously three ports on the iMac.
I also have two externally powered drives, both of which work fine.
It appears that any transfers from the INTERNAL drive to a USB Powered drive work ok, but any significant transfers from a USB drive (externally powered) to the USB powered drive FAIL.
I have tried plugging the USB powered drive into the iMac directly, and into the USB powered hub, no difference.
I suspect that the USB on the iMac just cannot handle either the power requirements or the data throughput requirements.
The external USB powered drives are:
    Western Digital Passport 250GB.
    Iomega Select 500GB.
Any hints? Or is this desktop machine just not made to work with USB powered devices???

If your two powered external drives are always connected to the iMac, you should really reformat them to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+, and not use a Windows format. There are other limitation to FAT32, because it is an old file system from a time when hard drives were very small. One is that data is not stored as efficiently, so the same files (especially if there are a lot of small files) will take up more space on the drive. Another potential conflict is file naming convention; an allowed file name on one may not be allowed in the other (between a Windows format and a Mac format). There is also no journaling with FAT32, which is a feature that helps with data corruption issues. There are probably other disadvantages to using FAT32 on a Mac.
As a test with that external USB-powered drive (the one you own), you should use Disk Utility to reformat it to a Mac format. Then, try the file transfer again. If it works, then the cause was the existing formatting, although the exact reason may not be clear. If you need it to be FAT32, you can try using Disk Utility to format it as +MS-DOS (FAT)+. Maybe if the Mac does the formatting, it will resolve this problem, even it is still formatted as FAT32 (and it should still work on a PC).
When going from Mac format to Windows format on the entire drive, you may want to use the Disk Utility Partition tab, and not the Erase tab. On the Partition tab, reset the +Volume Scheme+ to one partition. Click the Options button and it will show the three possible choices for +Partition Map Scheme+. When you format it as +MS-DOS (FAT)+, select +Master Boot Record+. When you format it as +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+, select +GUID Partition Table+.

  • Does anyone have a USB powered external hard drive that works?

I bought a really slick USB powered hard drive to take with me when I travel. The whole reason for purchase is to have it power off the laptop. It works on all the Windows machines, but my Mac doesn't even know the drive exists unless I first plug it into a powered USB hub. If I plug it directly into the USB port on the laptop, nada-zip-zilch.
This doesn't fit the plan I had.
Any help? Anyone need a slick little hard drive? 8-)

Hi Kitty, I have a lacie porsche designed drive that works with out a hub, but it needs to use two usb ports to mount on the mac. not ideal but portable enough for me

  • Trust Curve 7 Usb Powered Hub

    Hi guys
I have bought a new usb powered hub, the Trust Curve 7.
It's look nice but it doesn't work properly.
The only way to make it work is to connect the hub without the power supply and only AFTER connect the power supply.
I think this thing isn't normal and i doesn't like this problem (ok it isn't a big problem but...)
    Any IDEA
    P.s i'm running OSX 10.7 on a macbook pro 13inch late 2011 (i5 dual core 4 gb ram)
I've try the hub on a windows computer and it's work well
    Regards Andrea

    Hi Schooner17-
    Are the drives bus-powered?
If so, do they work with the hub on a Mac? Do the drives work 1 at a time?
That hub might not supply enough juice to power both drives.
    Luck-

  • Using Alesis multimix 12, Alesis 520 usb powered monitors on a macbook pro with apple logic pro 9

I can only get sound from my mixer and logic pro 9 from my internal comp speakers, but when I connect the usb powered monitors no sound. I can play itunes through the monitors but for some reason I cannot use the multimix and powered montiors, both being usb, at the same time. Any suggestions?

Yes, but when just the multimix is plugged in it finds it in input, and when I connect the monitors it takes away the input and then the speakers are in the output but I cannot use them togther. Last night I coneceted the Alesis io2 interface and works, actually sounds better with my guitar tracks than the mixer.

  • Is the lumia920 usb powered - can you attach perip...

is the lumia920 usb powered, in other words if I had a micro usb to regular usb converter, put in some device, would the device be powered by the phone?
this happens on the S3 my current phone but looking to do some automation work with a usb powered board with windows phone but there is no info anywhere that I can find regarding this.
If anyone has this phone, and a suitable converter, does attaching a usb stick allow you to read whats on the usb stick?
    Many thanks in advance

WP OS does not support this feature. You can suggest this feature HERE

  • USB powered hard drive recommendation?

I am having trouble finding an external removable hard drive that can be powered through my USB.
I bought one a Western Digital 120g portable drive - it won't even show up or eject unless it's plugged in with a cord I swiped from another device.
After reading the posts, it seems this is a problem. Any recommendations for brands/sizes that don't require a power source?
    Thank you very much,
    Emily

I would be willing to use whatever one works - I am not as savvy on my machine as I once was so I appreciate ANY pointers.
I am trying to keep some photos/video on an external, portable, self-powered hard drive. I don't need to boot it up, just access it as additional storage.
I do have a firewire port. I didn't know if that would have difficulty powering a device the same way my USB port is limited in powering - so any tips for an external, portable hard drive that is powered through the laptop, either via USB or Firewire, would be appreciated.
Let me know if I'm asking the wrong question or need to go a different direction.
    Thanks again!

  • Usb powered on while pc is off on x58 pro

Noob question here, i want my pc to be able to power my usb ports while the power is off so my mp3 player can charge. I managed to do it the other day and now its not working again. >_< its something i changed in the bios i think. Anybody know what options control this?

Have a look in BIOS, under Power Management. If there is a 'Resume on USB' option, set it to enabled.
I just tried this on my system, and now my phone charges when connected while the system is powered off.

  • Any USB powered hubs that DO NOT prevent Sleep???

I have a Belkin powered usb hub.
whenever it is attached my computer will not stay in sleep mode.
keeps waking up whenever i try to put it to sleep.
deos anyone know of a usb hub that does not do this??
    thank you!

I have nothing but Belkin hubs (both USB 1 and USB 2) at home and work and none of them keep my computers awake. It could be an isolated incident with your hub, it might be one of the cables (that happened to me at work and drove me half nuts!), and it might actually be one of the peripherals you have connected to the hub.

  • Is there a limit to USB powers on iMac?

I was looking for a USB hub that would allow my iPad2 to remain charged while connected to my iMac 27.  I purchased a Targus 7 port USB hub that has two 'high powered' USB ports that I thought I could use to accomplish this, but when I installed it, I find that I often get the Apple Grey Screen of Death on powering up (I did not know about this as Apple keeps it quiet).  The earlier version of a 4 port USB hub by Belkin did not cause this.
Unplugging all USB devices and rebooting while replugging one at the time definitely showed the offender to be the Targus device.
So I wonder, does OSX Lion have a USB limit?  Theoretically, one should be able to use many USB ports and devices, but perhaps there is some hidden limitation in OSX Lion?
    Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks, I suspected as much.  FWIW, the title on my questions should have read 'Is there a limit on USB PORTS on the iMac'.  I don't know how powers got in there.
Again, the Targus has two high powered ports on USB that can deliver up to 1 amp acc to specs, but it won't charge the iPad.
