USB shared printer not showing up in 10.5.8 default list

Ugh - so I've spent half a day Googling and reading stuff but so far - no joy. I'm trying to print to a Brother HL-5240 printer connected via USB to a G4 Power Mac running 10.5.8 (I could print from all my machines when everything was running 10.4.11 - this is why I put off upgrading ... ) - and here's the rub:
- printer sharing is turned 'on' on that host G4 server that the printer is directly connected to via USB
- a 2.1GHz G5 iMac running 10.5.8 on my network (LAN) sees the printer when I go to add a printer from sys prefs and it shows up in the default list - I can print to it
- a G4 1.5GHz PB (wi-fi), a G5 2.0GHz DP Power Mac (LAN) and an Intel Mac Mini (LAN) all running 10.5.8 cannot see the printer - it doesn't show up in the default list on any of those machines
- I have installed the drivers (both CUPS and PostScript) directly from Brother's site, along w/ an update also from Brother's site on all machines
- I tried to run the firmware update from Brother's site but it informed me my HL-5240 has the most up-to-date firmware so it was not needed
- when I plug the printer into USB on my G4 PB mentioned above to test, the G4 Power Mac host server can see it - but not the other way around (???)
I am frustrated out of my mind and totally stumped. If it didn't work at all, that'd be one thing - but that a G5 iMac can see and print to it perfectly, but none of my other machines (G4, G5 and Intel) can is *%$&#^$ messed up (that and how it worked plugged in to my PB but not the other way around) - so it's clearly being shared OK by the G4 Power Mac server. But why can only one of four machines see and print to it?
Any suggestions would be über-awesome - Terminal commands, whatever. I just want to be able to print - blasted 10.5 ...
cheers

What happens when you click onto "Finder" at the top left corner of the screen and choose "Preferences"? Do you see servers connected to? anything missing there? maybe fiddle around with those general settings?
You can also just ctrl-click on the shared folder in finder and make an alias. That's the way i'd do it.

  • Shared printer not showing in list

My husband and I both have mac g4's, connected over usb network. We both recently updated to 10.48. The printer is connected to usb hub on with his printer. Everything was fine til we updated operating systems. Now the printer stopped showing in my printer listing. It prints when connected directly to either computer. Did everything manual and books said about printer sharing. Both downloaded latest drivers. It's an HP Photosmart 3200.
    Thanks!

    Hi Kathy,
Generally the updates affect the permissions on files, so that is why the Repair Disk Permissions can resolve printing problems.
    Given that you are using TCP/IP to connect to each other, then you would be using the same protocol to view and connect to the shared printer. What you can do next is open the CUPS printer page of your computer to see if the shared printer is visible. Do the following;
    1. Open your Internet browser, such as Safari.
    2. For the address, type
    http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
    and hit Enter.
    This should show the printers installed on your computer and the printers shared on his Mac (Tamo). If it doesn't show his shared printer, type the following;
    http://ipaddress:631/printers/sharename
    Note that you need to replace ip_address with the IP address of your husbands Mac (Tamo) and 'shared_printer' with the shared name of the printer. So the address should look something like this;
    http://192.168.44.47:631/printers/HP3200
If you are not sure of the shared name you can check this by clicking on Network Preferences > Print & Fax > Sharing.
Doing the above in the browser should make the CUPS page for the shared HP appear. If it does then we are a step closer in working this out.
Let me know how you go...
    Regards,
    Paul

  • HP USB-connected printer not showing up, no way to add it???

I upgraded to Leopard and lost the ability to scan from my HP PSC 2210. I know this is because HP haven't got around to writing new software for Leopard yet, so I'm waiting for them to release this. I was just happy that I could still print via the 2210 by just using the Leopard supplied print driver (may have been a generic one).
I've had trouble printing recently and deleted the printer from my list of printers. When I try to add it back via print and fax manager, it doesn't show up in the default list (even though it's connected via USB). If I select More Printers, all I get is "HP IP Printing" as an option - according to apple's support page, I should have a list of printers here (and I'm sure I used to). I don't even have a generic printer option.
What can I do to install the printer now? The driver on HPs website is only for OSX 10.3, it says use the apple ones for tiger and leopard.
I've tried unplugging, replugging, rebooting etc...

Hi! It may have been just that plugging in the usb cable when it wanted you to caused it to recognize it. The computer senses when something is plugged in and the installer may have needed to be at that point and have the cable plugged in at that precise time in order to complete the install. Heck if I knew the answer to that sorta question I could be an expert. (An expert you know is anyone that's 50 miles from home!). Anyway, always glad to help. Tom

  • Adding shared printers? Network printer not showing up in list

I have a network printer not showing up in the Bonjour Printer Wizard. There is not a place to add a printer to this list. Does my network printer need to be installed under the Windows side as well, or can I share it using Bonjour? I'm confused as to how the shared printer program works. Also, my Adobe "print to pdf" option shows up as a printer, but how do I change the file destination location? It doesn't give me an option to change the "saved to" location. I am using these printers through Parallels in AutoCad, and that should be the only reason I will need to share printers. But I am in AutoCad a good deal of time, so I need to know how to quickly print my drawings.

    Welcome to the forums!
You don't say if you installed after downloading the Printer you deleted, but I suspect it's one not showing, and that you need to reinstall.

Yes, I have also tried and failed when setting up Home Sharing.  I have followed the instruction given on the Support website, but this is all I see:
Both computers are on the same local network and both allow Home Sharing and are signed in with the same user name. I am not sure what else to do.  Any suggestions?

I have two pcs and I have enabled home sharing for both and made sure I am signed in under the same apple id for both, but "Sharing

I found that switching homesharing off and then turning it back on for me cleared the issue.

  • W520: Unable to boot from USB - device does not show up in boot menu

I have a W520, and I am trying to boot from a USB key. The USB key is bootable, my old T61p boots just fine from it, and so does another computer I tried.
The W520, after pressing F12 on power on, immediately shows the Intel PXE agent and then some blue boot menu, which only shows hard drive and LAN as available boot options.
I have tried all three USB ports but the results are always the same - the USB device does not show up. Is there any trick or BIOS setting to enable boot from USB?
    Thanks,
        CS

    Hello Neil
Thanks for getting back to me
The issue was that the usb drives were disabled in the bios from the  Startup menu.
    To enable
    1. Enter bios
    2. Select boot
    3. If you do not see the boot device you require use the down cursor key until the "Excluded from boot priority order" becomes visible.
    4. Select the device you require (in my case USB HDD)
    5. Save and exit.
You can now boot from a usb stick and install the Linux distro of your choice :-)
    Cheers

  • Printer not showing up in "shared folder"

    Hello everyone:
Have B&W G3 when using under 10.2.8 printer( HP 4m) attached thru combo of ethernet/appletalk using asante bridge the printer shows up under "shared printer" and can be accessed thru my wireless network. When I upgraded to 10.3.9 the HP 4m printer does not show up in the "shared printer" folder but shows up only in B&W G3 printer folder and can only be used printer from B&W G3. To gain network access to the HP 4m I have to reboot my B&W G3 back into 10.2.8. ? Any solutions. Thanx
    Margie

That's great that everything is working for you, and I do appreciate your following this thread and your help. I too work in a print design environment with 5 G5's and 1 20" iMac all running 10.4.6. Like your office, everything works well. These machines have been on the bleeding edge of both Adobe and Apples' updates, and rarely have problems... Unfortunately, this is not the case for my powerbook, which is why I continue to post this question. My very un-scientific theory is that all of the machines that can print were setup while they were running earlier versions of tiger or panther, however, my PB was not. coincidence?
Anyway, since this is clearly an issue with Tiger and/or it's installation, is my next step an archive and install? How about the work around with deleting the printing preferences, etc. and re-installing from the dvd? Any potential ill effects from going these routes?
Do you, or anyone else following along, know if this is something Apple will address in 10.5? No disrespect intended, but take a look around this printing forum... it seems that most of these problems are similar in nature involving windows printing. just my 2 cents.

  • Shared printer not printing

I have a Canon iP4700 connected by usb to my new iMac (21.5) and setup as a shared printer. It prints perfectly from the iMac but other computers on the network (Windows PCs) can see the printer (I set them up using the Bonjour wizard as the normal Windows Add Printer wizard was not reliable) and load the printer interface but when they print, the pages come out blank. I have the correct printer driver installed on the Windows computers. When I had a Windows computer connected to the printer all the computers (3 others) could print to the printer without any problem.
I have tried a print server (Netcomm NP3680) but the iMac keeps dropping the printer into pause mode using the Canon driver but the PreFab driver will print (but does not show ink levels etc). Have also tried the print share feature of the Belkin modem/router but this is also unreliable as it drops connection.
Any ideas on how to get the print to actually print something on the page from the other computers when set up as a shared printer on the Mac?

I had a similar problem with my Canon MP280 when I connected it to my new iMac, shared it on the network and tried to print from a Windows 7 laptop.
The Bonjour wizard set up the printer fine, I could connect and send things to print, but the printer simply ejected a blank page for each job.
I found a number of suggestions about clearing the printer subsystem or other uninstall-and-reinstall type tricks, but none of these worked. I tried many different orders of installing things, even turning off the wireless assistant software on the PC. (Seriously, that was a suggestion in one thread.) All to no avail. What does work for me, I found, was pretty counter-intuitive: Choose the wrong printer driver.
On my Windows 7 PC, I opened the list of printers and right-clicked the printer Bonjour had created, and opened the printer properties. In the properties window I selected the advanced tab, and clicked on the new driver button. There, I selected the HP Color LaserJet Series 2800 PS. I clicked OK and tried out printing, and it worked perfectly.
It seems the trick is picking a postscript printer driver (that's what the PS stands for). I suspect any number of fairly generic PS printer drivers would work. From what I read on the web, it seems that the system Apple uses for sharing printers automatically supports postscript, even (possibly?) for non-postscript printers. This is helpful when the driver provided by the manufacturer doesn't actually work, which seems to be the case for some Canon printers at least.
I don't get ink level reporting, but I'll trade being able to print something for knowing how much ink is left any day.
Note: When you set up a printer using Bonjour on Windows, it may not give you a choice of printer drivers. (I think it skips this step if you already have a matching printer driver installed.) You can still change the printer driver used with the printer later. If it does give you a list, well maybe you should try the manufacturer's printer first, just in case it works.
Now if only I could get AirPrint to work with this printer from my iPad... :-/ (Not holding out much hope for that one.)

  • External USB Hard Drive not showing up on Time Capsule

    Hi all,
I have a 500 Gb Time Capsule that used to be able to detect my external USB hard drives. I had to store my things for a while and have just started using the Time Capsule again. The TC works fine, however, the same USB external hard drives I used to connect to the TC are not showing up anymore :s They show up on the desktop when I connect them directly to my MacBook via USB. I have been through most of the file sharing options in Airport Utility and System Preferences but have not been able to solve this. I can't think of any settings that would have changed from when they were showing up in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx

yosemite won't work with ntfs drives for some reason, i've had the same issue with my toshiba. i thought ok lemme buy another one, and transfer it over maybe it's a driver issue which i've tried over and over, apple support can't figure it out.
here's a simple fix, but the problem is i have an external where all my photography and video files are stored, so i can't access them right now and it's making my life ****.
    http://guides.macrumors.com/Formatting_an_External_Device
that does work and make the drive mountable now, but problem being i can't obviously reformat the old drive and lose everything. once the new drive is formatted for mac i can't plug it into a pc to transfer the files from. which is the only problem now. but formatting the drive for mac only DOES work. but you're just screwed and not able to use it ntfs. hope the link helps SOME people.
