Use of iPads in school / issuing devices to students

I work at a school and we are thinking of issuing iPads to our students - they would keep the devices. We are also developing our own apps and eBooks, and we want to pre-load these onto the iPads before giving them out.
It occurs to me that if a student took his iPad home and synced it to his own iTunes library, all of our pre-loaded content would get deleted. Is there any way to stop this?
Also, is there a quick and easy way of pre-loading apps onto 20+ devices?
I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on this. Thanks.

There is a configuration utility that allows installing nonpublic apps. The whole process of using an iDevice in business like setting is called using it in the enterprise. The following is the guide for deploying such devices:

There is also a subforum under the iPad for Enterprise use.

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Is there a way to use the iPad as a handwriting device on a mac

I am wondering if the iPad can be used as a handwriting peripheral for a MacBook Pro. I have been looking into the Bamboo tablets and really can't afford to spend $50-$150 on one. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

After a little bit research I found the answer I was seeking. Air Display.

  • HT3819 I am a teacher. I have an iPhone and iPad for personal use.  I also have an iPod and now an iPad for school use.  Would it be best for me to use home sharing on all 4 devices, or should I split my account and have separate accounts for home & schoo

My first i device was an iPod touch that I was given for use in my classroom.  Then I got an iPhone for personal use.  Both items are listed under the same username and account.  Since then I now have 2 iPads, one for home and one for work.  I have many apps that are only for work like Math Zombie and Science Facts, and many that are for personal use, like Facebook and YouVersion.  I know that I can synch each device and tell iTunes which apps go on which device.  However at home I use a Mac, and my school computer is a PC.  I am wondering if I should split my account and keep personal separate from work.  Then I can synch all school related devices on the PC and home devices on the Mac.  I realize that there maybe the rare occaision that I might want one app for both accounts.  That's the chance I take on splitting my account.  Are there ay benefits one way or the other?

Will you be the person paying for apps on both accounts?
Are you the only person that will use both of the iPads?
Is there a chance students will be using the work iPad and if so, do you want personal data stored on it?
If you're the only one using it I'd keep the same account just to have the flexibility of having access to everything on all devices. If your students will be using it or if the school is paying for the school apps I'd keep separate accounts. It all depends on how often you will use school apps from home, and home apps at school. Just some things to consider...

    Not as such.
Give the AppleTV units unique names and also enable Airplay password in settings with unique passwords for each teacher.

  • I am a school administrator. I want to know if anyone knows how to use an ipad wireless hard drive as a storage device for individual student work files  that are only accessible to the student or teacher?

I need to use an ipad wireless hard drive as a storage device. I want the student to do work on the iPad , then save it securely on the hard drive, then be able to go back and get the file and continue working on it. Can this be done?

We use google apps for education with the google drive ipad app
The google drive editor is basic.   But it meets our needs.   Students go to the app called "google drive".  They logon and start a document on an iPad and then edit again using almost any device anywhere(home or school): ipad, windows7, mac, android.
We setup each student account with folders for each teacher.  Students can move documents into their teacher folder, and then the teacher can edit in real time with the studnet.   It's like a multi player editor.
There's no quick fix to allow students using ipads to save work, then revise alone or with the help of a teacher.
You could also use skydrive, dropbox, or filebrowser, but the ability of ipad apps to edit and save revisions is spotty.  It depends if that app developer has added support.  You can see your MS Word doc files with those tools, but I don't know if you can edit the DOCX file, then save back to DOCX  files.

When trying to log into face time I get the registering device does not have appropriate credentials after I sign in, I have OSX 10.8.4 on my Mac Pro. I can log into face time without a problem using my IPAD.>

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the issue is reolved. If there's no resolution after Step 3, post your results.
    Step 1
Sign out of iMessage in the Accounts tab of the preferences dialog, then sign back in.
    Step 2
Log out of your user account and log back in.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode and test, then reboot as usual and test again.
Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

  • School banning use of iPads

We just purchased several iPads and are using them in our school. We were just told that the iPads Re taking up a significant amount of our bandwidth and that is threatening our networks ability to run online testing. So the district is collecting all the iPads until they have a solution to the problem. They told us thAt like all apple products the iPad does not allow them to control the kind/amount of bandwidth they use. Is there anything we can do about this?

I'm deploying a lot of iPads in a school setting. Traffic shaping should be occurring at a network level, not a device level. I suppose that if they are allocating varying limits of bandwidth to different classes of users, and the iPads are not authenticating to a directory structure (like Active Directory -which can be accomplished with Radius wifi authentication), they are unable to determine the user type. Even so, if they don't know the device user, they should be able to default them to the lowest bandwidth category. Same goes for filtering. If we can't determine who is at a device, it defaults to the most restrictive student content filter. Additionally, I would be very surprised if an iPad could use even half the network bandwidth that an average laptop consumes. Your school IT system may be tied to a legacy traffic shaping technology that supports WIndows workstations only. If this is the case, it's time to upgrade.

  • School issued iPad--message that iPad is controlled by another computer.  I need to sync from my home computer.  How would I do this?

school issued iPad2 is controlled by another computer.  I have to download from my home computer.  How do I make this happen?

An iPad is designed to sync or connect with only one computer. Your schoool issue iPad was set up using a school computer most likely and that is the one that will sync wi the pad. Attempting to supync with a different computer will create problems. I suggest not doing that.
    I see two solutions,
    1. Email the docs you need to transfer from your computer to the email account that is on your iPad.
    2. Copy the material from your computer and transfer that to the schools computer. Check with your Information Tech person at your school to see what might be best.

One of my sons has an ipad mini and the other a larger ipad.  The one using the mini needs a larger ipad for school, so they need to switch.  They want to do so without losing their individual app progress.  Can I simply switch the SIM cards?

SIM card has nothing to do with your Apple ID or apps.
IOS devices do not store anything on the SIM card.
    BAckup everything on the iPads.
REstore tbe ipad from the backup of the other iPad.
    REpeat for the other one.

I don't think you can connect a printer since you won't have the printer drivers. I use FingerPrint from collobos.com to print to my non-AirPrint printers.

    Hi Jamesdwills,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
If you are using the same Apple ID on both devices, the Game Center profile should be the same.
Check out this information from the iPad User Guide.  Try signing out of the Game Center on both devices and then sign back in with the correct Apple ID:
