Use of ndf files in sql server
what is the use of ndf files in sql server
In addition to the answers above, I want to clerified a very important point! The file names are
only conventions, and in SQL Server you can use any extension that you want including your name. In Unix like system (as Unix, Linux etc) there is no meaning to the file extensions, and this is
just something that the windows operating system use (This can be change as well and configure differently).
As mentioned above, the the convention and the recommendation is to use file name extension for primary data files mdf , for the log files use ldf and for secondary data files ndf. If you want to mess with the other DBA's mind in your company you can use
the opposite names (Just for fun! this is not recommended for real database, but a very nice exercise for interview exam)
For example: you can build a database with ldf file as the database file and mdf file as the log file. Then ask DBAs to attach the database to the server. Most DBAs will not succeed since they will try to atach
the mdf file :-) again... DONT DO IT IN REAL DATABADE :-)

Hello,
As the message says the file is not primary data file ,i guess it must be ndf(secondary data file) or some other file you might have selected by mistake.PLease select primary data file and try attching you will succed

How to link Excel 2010 .XLSX file to SQL server 2008R2 - a method that actually works?
I have been trying unsuccessfully to link my excel file to SQL server like I used to with SQL 2005.
In SQL 2008R2 I have installed the 64-bit data access components from Office 2010 to get the provider 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' avilable.
When I try this command:
SELECT
FROM
OPENDATASOURCE(
'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0',
'Data Source="E:\ADUpdates\Employee List1.xlsx"; Extended properties=Excel 12.0')...[Sheet1$]
I get this error:
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "(null)" reported an error. Access denied.
Msg 7301, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the required interface ("IID_IDBCreateCommand") from OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "(null)".
The Access Denied error seems to be form the worksheet and not the file itself. Evidence is that if I enter a bogus sheet name it tells me the sheet doesn't exist and after this error the file is locked open and can't be saved again from Excel until the
query windows is closed. The sheet is not protected in Excel so I don't know how access to it can be denied.
Does anyone actually have this working in SQL 2008R2?Some minor progress on this issue by running SQL Server service under a domain account with Administrator priv on the SQL server.
This query now works in a query window:
SELECT * FROM OPENDATASOURCE( 'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0', 'Data Source="E:\ADUpdates\Employee List.xlsx"; Extended properties=Excel 12.0')...[EmployeeData];
However, creating a Linked server object for the same spreadsheet still does not work:
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'TEST', @srvproduct=N'Excel 12.0', @provider=N'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0', @datasrc=N'E:\ADUpdates\Employee List.xlsx'
The test connection to the linked server failed.
Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "TEST".
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "TEST" returned message "Unrecognized database format 'E:\ADUpdates\Employee List.xlsx'.". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7303)

Please advice. I searched many places and did not get actual solution that will resolve my case.
Nusrat AkhterHi Nusrat Akhter,
According to your description, when installing the first install failed, and it looks like the instance did not uninstall completely. To solve the issue I recommend you changed the instance name in re-installing SQL Server, and check if it can work fine.
There is a similar issue that the SQL engine will not start, and there is no method of uninstalling either it, or any of the components etc. You can review the following post.

Importing excel file to SQL Server
I have an application that needs to import an excel file with
10 columns of data into an SQL Server database table with 13
columns of data. Two of the 3 extra database columns are manditory,
and I need to manipulate the values going in.
I've determined the best method to do this using coldfusion
is to import the excel file into a cvs file then use SQL to import
the cvs file into SQL server. Does anyone know how to import an
excel document into a cvs file using ColdFusion?
Thanks!A couple of things come to mind. You might consider using DTS
to import your data directly into SQL Server from Excel, rather
than putting ColdFusion in the middle. Or, you might consider
creating a ColdFusion ODBC datasource out of your Excel file, use a
cfquery to select the applicable data, then insert the data into
SQL Server in a loop. Not very efficient, but it can be done.

You are trying to attach SQL Server 2012 database files to SQL Server 2008 R2 which is not allowed, you either need to upgrade your SQL Server 2008 to 2012 or alternatively you can generate all scripts from SQL Server 2012 and execute it in SQL Server
2008 R2.
You can refer below link to how to generate script.

should i stop both services for moving from one drive to another?
note: I tried teh below solution but this didint work:

Update:
now am getting the message :

Solution:
Search for the physical files(mdf/ldf) in the OS and copy to target location and the re-run sp_attach_db with right location and name of mdf/ldf. -
Temp File in SQL Server change to Oracle
Dear all,
If there is temp file in SQL Server named '#Tablename',
HOw can I change it to use in Oracle Database?
Now I am doing upgrade to oracle database. If I need to create the temp file name , HOw can I do in oracle database?
Thanks for your big help.Can you clarify the question a bit? I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish.
Are you trying to create a temporary table? A data file for a temporary tablespace? A temporary operating system file?
Is there something ODBC-related in this question? If not, you may want to post the question in the general database forum.

Loading a CSV file to Sql Server
Hi,
How can i load a csv file, which is in a shared location itn osql using bods.
Where can i create the data source pointing to csv fileHi,
Use fileformat to load CSV file into SQL server, below the details
A file format defines a connection to a file. Therefore, you use a file format to connect to source or target data when the data is stored in a file rather than a database table. The object library stores file format templates that you use to define specific file formats as sources and targets in data flows.
To work with file formats, perform the following tasks:
• Create a file format template that defines the structure for a file.
• Create a specific source or target file format in a data flow. The source or target file format is based on a template and specifies connection information such as the file name.
File format objects can describe files of the following types:
• Delimited: Characters such as commas or tabs separate each field.
• Fixed width: You specify the column width.
• SAP transport: Use to define data transport objects in SAP application data flows.
• Unstructured text: Use to read one or more files of unstructured text from a directory.
• Unstructured binary: Use to read one or more binary documents from a directory.
More details, refer the designer guide

Problem in bulk import of text files in SQL Server
Hi,
I am using sql server 2012 x 64 and trying to import some text files (tab/ comma separated) and ms access files in sql server tempdb
I am trying bulkinsert on text file but it is inserting all data in a single line in sql while in text file I have 1000K lines,
Then I tried importing other data using openrowset from access file but I am getting following error
Cannot create an instance of OLE DB provider "MSDASC" for linked server "(null)".
can any one please provide some assistance . If I am able to upload the data from flat text file then it will be enough as I am getting data in tsv or csv format
NitinIf this is a one-off, I think you should try the import/export wizard in SQL Server Management Studio instead. This may be easier to get working.
If you want to this import on a regular basis with BULK INSERT, we need to see the CREATE TABLE statement for your table and a sample file. Best if you can upload the file on Skydrive, Dropbox or similar, as the exact bytes matters.
To connect to an Access database, you use the ACE provider. Never heard of MSDASC before.

One of my replication job failed with below error, which means job failed because of permission issue on the folder. To resolve that, I have granted the permission and it started working fine. Now the question is as my job was running fine since long time
without any issue then how suddenly the permission of the folder got omitted automatically? I am sure that no one deleted the permission from the folder and as the server is part of SQL cluster no failover occurs.
Error:-The distribution agent failed to create temporary files in 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\COM' directory. System returned errorcode 5.
RahulHi Rahul,
Error code 5 indicates that the error is "access is denied." Please make sure that the COM folder is excluded from any antivirus scan that occurs on the system.
If the issue still persists, I recommend you use
Process Monitor to find out a bit more about the accounts and access requests involved. Then grant write permission to the exact COM folder for the account that is running the SQL Server Agent service. For more details, please review the following similar
thread.

How to use open Row set in sql server 2014
Hello All,
How to open the row set using sql server 2014 using link server connection.Hi denyy,
Are you referring to the OPENROWSET function in SQL Server 2014?
The OPENROWSET method is an alternative to accessing tables in a linked server and is a one-time, ad hoc method of connecting and accessing remote data by using OLE DB. The examples below demonstrate how to use the OPENROWSET function:
A. Using OPENROWSET with SELECT and the SQL Server Native Client OLE DB Provider
SELECT a.*
FROM OPENROWSET('SQLNCLI', 'Server=Seattle1;Trusted_Connection=yes;',
'SELECT GroupName, Name, DepartmentID
FROM AdventureWorks2012.HumanResources.Department
ORDER BY GroupName, Name') AS a;
B. Using the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Jet
SELECT CustomerID, CompanyName
FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\SAMPLES\Northwind.mdb';
'admin';'',Customers);
GO
C. Using OPENROWSET to bulk insert file data into a varbinary(max) column
USE AdventureWorks2012;
GO
CREATE TABLE myTable(FileName nvarchar(60),
FileType nvarchar(60), Document varbinary(max));
GO
INSERT INTO myTable(FileName, FileType, Document)
SELECT 'Text1.txt' AS FileName,
'.txt' AS FileType,
* FROM OPENROWSET(BULK N'C:\Text1.txt', SINGLE_BLOB) AS Document;
GO
D. Using the OPENROWSET BULK provider with a format file to retrieve rows from a text file
SELECT a.* FROM OPENROWSET( BULK 'c:\test\values.txt',
FORMATFILE = 'c:\test\values.fmt') AS a;

SQL dependency OnChange event constantly when using a specific database on SQL server
Hello
I did some prototype dev using a new db I created on our dev SQL server instance and OnChange events only when the underlying data was changed. I tried the same thing with another database on the same server which is a replica of our live database. With
this it just kept firing the event regardless of what activity there was in the table. I even created a totally empty table and used that for the query and it still fired on an empty table.
Is there anything obvious that I need to do to this database to stop this? I'm pretty sure my c#is ok just confused by this
Thanks,
Dave.On the db where it works the properties in the SqlNotificationEventArgs are different to the one that does not work:
So it looks as though for some reason it never gets to subscribe to this event.

New Files in SQL Server Log Directory
Does anyone know which process generates files to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log.
I started seeing new files are added from yestoday. The file name pattern is like "ServerName_MSSQLSERVER_SQLDIAG_0_130632533281120000.xel".
Thanks,Can you right click and script the system_health session monitor? Check the corresponding path and name of the file.
Its enabled by default. The system_health session collects system data that can be used to help troubleshoot performance issues.
I think someone has created the file.
