User Accounts, Applescript & PHP

Do you know if there is a limit to the number of user accounts you can have on OS X 10.4.6 !? If so, what is this figure !?
Also, is it possible to create a php script to create a user account, or call an Applescript to do the same job !?
All help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know about php, but it is possible to create a user account from the command line (and therefore AppleScript using 'do shell script') in a multi-step process using built in tools such as 'dscl' to create the appropriate entries in the "NetInfo" database, and others for copying a typical "Home" directory structure from one of the templates in the "/System/Library/User Template" folder, fixing ownership, etc.
Alternatively, you might want to look into downloading the "Server Admin Tools" (free from Apple). It includes the 'serversetup' utility which works just fine on a stand-alone OS X client machine to create the user account, group and home folder all in one go.
I have no idea what the limit is for the maximum number of users permitted on an OS X machine.

  • File permissions between user accounts on one computer

    Hi!!!
I have an iMac PowerPC G5 computer which I set with 2 accounts, one for me (the administrator) and another for some workers.
I´m having problems regarding writing and using files. I have some documents which both accounts need to use, read and save. The original files are not in the administrator account, but on the normal one. What I do when I want to read and write on a file located on the normal account is access to it going into the other user account and open it from the document folder. BUT i have to be givening permissions all the time because it lose them when I switch between both accounts
Sorry for my english, i´ll try to explain better:
1-I open a file which is in the normal account from my administrator account
2- It wont let me save anything so i have to give writing permissions
3-I switch to the normal account and wont allow me to write again, so I have to give permission again
4- Everytime I switch accounts i will have to give permission
    How can i solve this?
    Thanks!!
    G.

I wondered if it might be possible to modify files copied into such a shared folder with the aid of an AppleScript or Automator action saved as an application
nothing you can do with applescript or automator can come anywhere close to be as simple or as effective as the ACL method. folder actions only watch the top level of the folder they are attached to and plus they are extremely unreliable. what could be simpler than the method outlined above? you run two terminal commands and you are set. no scripts to run, no cron or launch daemons to make to run some periodic change of permissions scripts. file system does everything itself.
or would opening a file and then doing a simple 'Save As' to the folder do the trick?
only if you don't mind creating multiple copies of the same file any time you need to change it.
the only real problem with the ACL method is that inherited ACLs are not applied to items moved into the shared folder, only to copied or new files. this is not normally an issue except with some applications like photoshop which like to utilize temp files. when photoshop saves chages to a file it does the following. it saves the changed file to a temp file in a temporary directory, deletes the current file and then moves the temp file to where the original file was. because moving is involved this washes out the ACLs. very bad of photoshop. if you are unlucky enough to be using an app like this then there is a different method that can be used that does not have the deficiency of ACLs with respect to moved files but it requires some more prep. although once the prep is complete it works quite well. see my os x hint here
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20100202195536952
on how to do that. However, in most situations the ACL method is perfectly suitable and is much easier to set up so I recommend you go with that.

  • Sharing an iTunes Library across multiple user account and a network.

Sharing an iTunes Music Library across multiple user accounts.
    Hello Everybody!
Firstly, this was designed to be run in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. It will not work with earlier versions of Mac OS X! Sorry.
Here's a handy tip for keeping your hard drive neat and tidy, it also saves space, what in effect will be done is an iTunes music library will be shared amongst multiple users on the same machine. There are advantages and disadvantages to using this method.
    • Firstly I think it might be worthwhile to state the advantages and disadvantages to using this approach.
    The advantages include:
    - Space will be saved, as no duplicate files will occur.
    - The administrator will be able to have complete control over the content of the iTunes library, this may be useful for restricting the content of the Library; particularly for example if computer is being used at and education institution, business or any other sort of institution where things such as explicit content would be less favorable.
    - The machine will not be slowed by the fact that every user has lots of files.
The disadvantages to this system include.
    - The fact that the account storing the music will have to be logged in, and iTunes will have to be active in that account.
    - If the account housing the music is not active then nobody can use the iTunes library.
    - There is a certain degree of risk present when an administrator account must be continually active.
    - Fast User Switching must be enabled.
    Overview:
A central account controls all music on the machine/network, this is achieved by storing iTunes files in a public location as opposed to in the user's directory. In effect the system will give all users across the machine/network access to the same music/files without the possibility of files 'doubling up' because two different users like the same types of music. This approach saves valuable disk space in this regard and may therefore prove to be useful in some situations.
This is a hearty process to undertake, so only follow this tutorial if you're willing to go all the way to the end of it.
    Process:
    Step 1:
Firstly, we need to organize the host library, I tidied mine up, removing excess playlists, random files, things like that. this will make thing a bit easier in the later stages of this process.
Once the library is tidied up, move the entire "iTunes" folder from your Home directory to the "//localhost" directory (The Macintosh HD) and ensure that files are on the same level as the "Applications", "Users", "Library" and "System" directories; this will ensure that the files in the library are available to all users on the machine (this also works for networks)
Optionally you can set the ownership of the folder to the 'administrator' account (the user who will be hosting the library.), you may also like to set the permissions of 'you can' to "Read & Write" (assuming that you are doing this through the user who will host the library); secondly you should set the "Owner" to the administrator who will be hosting the library and set their "access" to "Read & Write" (this will ensure that the administrator has full access to the folder). The final part of this step involves setting access for the "Others" tab to "Read Only" this will ensure that the other users can view but not modify the contents on the folder.
    Overview:
So far we have done the following steps:
    1. Organized the host library.
    2. Placed the iTunes directory into a 'public' directory so that other users may use it. (this step is essential if you plan on sharing the library across multiple accounts on the same machine. NOTE: this step is only necessary if you are wanting to share you library across multiple accounts on the same machine, if you simply want to share the music across a network, use the iTunes sharing facility.
    3. set ownership and permissions for the iTunes music folder.
    Step 2:
Currently the administrator is the only user who can use this library, however we will address this soon. In this step we will enable iTunes music sharing in the administrator's account, this will enable other users to access the files in the library.
If you are not logged in as the administrator, do so; secondly, open iTunes and select "Preferences" from the "iTunes" menu, now click the "Sharing" tab, if "share my library on my local network" is not checked, the radio buttons below this will now become active, you may choose to share the entire libraries contents, or share only selected content.
Sharing only selected content may be useful if their is explicit content in the library and minors use the network or machine that the library is connected to.
If you have selected "share entire library" go to Step 3, if you have selected share "share selected playlists" read on.
After clicking "share selected playlists" you must then select the playlists that you intend to share across your accounts and network. Once you have finished selecting the playlists, click "OK" to save the settings.
    Overview:
    In this step we:
    1. Enabled iTunes sharing in the administrator's account, now, users on the local network may access the iTunes library, however, users on the same machine may not.
    Step 3:
Now we will enable users on the same machine to access the library on the machine. This is achieved by logging in as each user, opening iTunes, opening iTunes preferences, and clicking "look for shared music". now all users on the machine may also access the library that the administrator controls.
This in effect will mean that the user will not need to use their user library, it will be provided to them via a pseudo network connection.
As a secondary measure, I have chosen to write a generic login script that will move any content from the user's "Music/iTunes/iTunes Music" directory to the trash and then empties the user's trash.
This is done through the use of an Automator Application: this application does the following actions.
    1. Uses the "Finder" action "Get Specified Finder Items"
    1a. The user's "~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music" folder
    2. Uses the "Finder" action "Get Folder Contents"
    3. Uses the "Finder" action "Move to Trash"
    4. Uses the "Automator" action "Run AppleScript"
    4a. with the following:
    on run {input, parameters}
    tell application "Finder"
    empty trash
    end tell
    return input
    end run
IMPORTANT: Once the script is adapted to the user account it must be set as a login item. in order to keep the script out of the way i have placed it in the user's "Library" directory, in "Application Support" under "iTunes".
    Overview:
    Here we:
    1. Enabled iTunes sharing in the user accounts on the host machine, in effect allowing all users of the machine to view a single iTunes library.
    2. (Optional) I have created a login application that will remove any content that has been added to user iTunes libraries, this in effect stops other users of the machine from adding music and files to iTunes.
    Step 4:
If it is not already enabled, open system preferences and enable Fast User Switching in Accounts Options.
    Summary:
We have shared a single iTunes library across multiple user account, while still allowing for network sharing. This method is designed to save space on machines, particularly those with smaller hard drives.
I hope that this hint proves to be helpful and I hope everybody will give me feedback on my process.
    regards,
    Pete.

how to share music between different accounts on a single computer

  • How Can I Login To Multiple User Accounts Simultaneously

I am using an Intel iMac (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) with 1GB of memory and 10.4.11. I have Fast User Switching enabled. I restart the Mac every morning. Then I login to a second user account. While at work, I access these accounts via VNC.
Sometimes I forget to login to the second user account. I do it from work via VNC, which sometimes causes complications.
Does OSX support simultaneous multiple user account login? If not, is there a work-around solution such as an AppleScript? This would provide a time savings to me, as well as a convenience if I forgot to login to the second user account before leaving home.
    Thank you.
    Kurt R. Todoroff

Seems to me, in another discussion, the simple Fast User Switching does not
do much really fast or automatically; there are a few faster steps than having
to log into each and every account change (even when FUS is enabled) so
this later development sounds a little more automatic, esp over a distance.
Is there a third party app or valid script that an do the multiple logins automatic
after the first-run; so passwords need not be re-entered, and the screen can just
switch over "fast" to another open account window, ready to go to work in there?
    {And not just a keyboard shortcut to save a few little steps, overall.}
    Whichever way the road turns...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Best way to move iTunes to different user account

My wife and I share a computer and it has a separate user account for each of us. She got an iPod but set it up and synced it on my account instead of hers. That was not a problem until now. I got an iPhone and want to set it up and sync in my account. What folders and files do I need to move from My Documents/Music to hers? Or what would the best way to move her personalized Ipod settings, etc? Thanks.

  • User account? urgent help

Ok so i bought my computer second hand and I foolishly tried to change the details on it without knowing what i was doing. My problem is that i was playing around with the user accounts and the next time i turned my computer on i lost everything on my computer. I have no files, pictures or anything at all (excuse the language but i dont know anything about computers). I took the computer to the apple store but they couldnt really help. I tried explaining that their was only one user account you can log on as but when you look on the hard drive for some reason there are two users. So my question is....if you swap user accounts do you lose all your files and is that what ive done??? Does any1 have an explanation?? It is urgent because i have uni work that i didnt back up and lost Thank you

Hi taddy14, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Did you rename your home folder by any chance? The one with the house icon. If you did follow these steps:

Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory, (it can happen spontaneously too)...

If the alternate user account is an admin account and login works correctly, then it appears that there's a conflict or corruption within the main account. If the alternate user account isn't an admin account, create a new admin account. While logged into the appropriate admin account, backup the main account's folder, delete the main account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the main account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated main account. If it boots normally, then the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Can I install iTunes in separate user accounts on Windows Vista 64-bit?

    Hi,
My wife and I use different user accounts on Windows Vista 64-bit. Before I go and mess things up on my computer, I wanted ask some questions:
    1) Has anyone has successfully installed iTunes to multiple user account?
    2) If so, has anyone successfully shared the same music root directory for 2 different iTune instances.
I'm thinking with iTunes very tight integration with the music files (for indexing/searching, etc), that it would be bad to have add/change/delete on the same music root from 2 independent installations.
    Experience OR opinions welcome!

) Has anyone has successfully installed iTunes to multiple user account?
You don't install the iTunes application more than once. Each user account in Windows will have its own iTunes library.
If so, has anyone successfully shared the same music root directory for 2 different iTune instances.
Many people have done so. This should help:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
Note that iTunes has no folder-watching capability, so if you add a track in one user account, the other user will have to add that new item manually, either by using the Add To Library command or dragging the item into the iTunes window. There are a couple of potential solutions from other developers, though:

  • How can I auto load Safari thru a non-Admin user account

Okay, maybe I don't want to do this - - but can I?
I have my old iMac setup to turn on at 8am. I would like to access it remotely through LogMeIn.com. But I need Safari running for remote access.
I'd prefer to have Safari running in a 'Guest' User Account with no Admin rights (then from LogMeIn.com, switch to my user account and I can enter my password manually).
I know how to auto login to a Guest account, but how do I have that account auto start Safari? Only Administrators can have programs start automatically, right?
I don't want to auto-login (with password if that's even possible) to my main Administrator account.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

I use iKey to remap the keys. It has a little more function then youpi key. For many years, I used youpi key before switching to iKey.
In addition, ikey will allow you to run ikey applications when ikey starts.
You might like iKey/youpi key. I have my frequently used applications set to f keys. The same f key starts an application and switches to the application.
Youpi key is free. It works fairly well for me in MAC OS 10.4 although not officially supported. There is a commercial version you can buy, called iKey.

I have the common programs that I use assigned to function keys. I have F4 assigned to Firefox. When I want to start FireFox, I press F4. When I want to switch to firefox, I press F4! Starting & switching to an application in Mac OS are the same thing in Mac OS.
Here is an example of to assign volumn control to a function key.

Here is a solution with XTool. XTool Uses exact screen addresses. So a movement of an icon will cause you trouble.
do shell script "/usr/sbin/system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType | grep 'Resolution'" -- get info
tell the result to set {DisplayWidth, DisplayHeight} to {word 2, word 4} -- get resolution
--move mouse {DisplayWidth div 2, DisplayHeight div 2} -- center mouse
    move mouse {670, 13} --sound
    click mouse
move mouse {673, 96} --sound level
    click mouse
    move mouse {555, 282} -- center mouse
    click mouse
First, there is the XTools scripting addition, which will give AppleScript the ability to move the mouse.

     a : ~/Library/ScriptingAdditions/
       b : /Library/ScriptingAdditions/

  • New user account "other" and cant delete it

    hi everyone,
i dont know what caused that but since yesterday i have that new user account "other".
i tried to delete it with root-user but it isnt shown there, activate root-user and delete again after restart didnt work either.
is some of the professionals here able to help me? i bad need an idea to fix that. Its on my macbook pro and also at my macpro, both with OS 10.6.8
Only new software i installed was MindManger 9 Upgrade direct from MindJet.
    Thanks a lot ;-)

    Hi Atlan,
in the forum of Livescribe it is stated as a known problem
    They are working on it.
Also some suggestions from other user how to get rid of the account.
I have not tried that as it seems you than delete also the Livescribe account and desktop.
I just wait till an update from Livescribe comes out.
To not show that other account you can change settings for login screen
Just show field name and password.
Now, I believe showing th eother account cannot do harm.
It is not the root account. That's disabled as I have seen.
The only question: Can Livescribe takeover your computer?
And if so, hacking livescribe will possible mean that they can hack your system then?
So, the only rigid solution is: delelete all Livescribe etc. , go to timemachie and set back your system.
But only if I would know the other account can create problems I would take this major step.
For now I wait and see
So, lets see what Livescribe will do and at what speed!
    here the thread at Livescribe:

  • How to create a new user account?

    Hi,
Could you point me to the document/maunal on
how to create a new user account for OS X 10.4?
I somehow couldn't find that from Apple web site.
    And I found one here:
    http://www.mcelhearn.com/article.php?story=2004110211244242
    and followed the instruction:
    # echo 'henry::512:512::0:0:Henry James:/Users/henry:/bin/bash' | sudo niload -v passwd /
but nothing happened. Either this doesn't work with
V10.4 (which I use), or I missed something.
Any pointer would be much apprecaited.
    Thanks.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4)

    Hi Allan and Simon,
    Thanks for your responses.
Sorry I didn't make my question clear. I meant:
"How to create a new user account with command line"?
The GUI (System Preference) would work. But I'd like
to how to do it from command line (just like on Unix).
    Any inputs would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • User Account Authentication across multiple Solaris servers - Best Practice

    Hi,
I am new to Solaris admin and would like to know the best practice/setup for authenticating user accounts across multiple solaris servers.
Currently we have 20 - 30 Solaris 8 & 10 servers which each have their own user accounts setup. I am planning to replace these with a similar number of Solaris 10 servers and would like to centralise the user accounts and their authentication.
I would be grateful for any suggestions on the best setup and any links to tutorials.
    Thanks
    Jools

i would suggest LDAP + kerberos, LDAP for name lookups and krb5 for auth. provides secure auth + extensable directory for users and other apps if needed. plus, it provides a decent spring board to add other unix plats into the mix since this will support any unix/linux/bsd plat. you could integrate this design with a windows AD env if you want as well.
    [http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/articles/kerberos_s10.jsp] sol + ldap+ AD
    [http://docs.lucidinteractive.ca/index.php/Solaris_LDAP_client_with_OpenLDAP_server] sol + ldap (openldap)
    [http://aput.net/~jheiss/krbldap/howto.html] sol + ldap + krb5
now these links are all using some diff means, however they should give you some ideas as to whats out there. sol 10 comes with suns ldap server and you can use the krb5 server which comes with it as well. many many diff ways to do this. many many more links out there as welll. these are just a few.

  • Two user accounts sharing info?

If I have two user accounts set up on my computer how do I make it so that I can share info between only those two users?
For example~ One account has all of our photos downloaded on iPhoto - how do I make it so that the other user can can see those photos when logged into the second account?
    Thanks.

Just dropping it into the shared folder is not enough. Any user other than the creator will not have write permission to an iPhoto library without twiddling with the permissions manually. An iPhoto library must be writeable by the user or else iPhoto will refuse to open it.
This is what I use to share iPhoto and iTunes libraries and iMovie projects between my wife's and my user accounts. It automatically changes permissions of everything so that both of us have write access: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050904072808460&lsrc=osxh
Leopard users can skip step 1; ACLs are already enabled by default in Leopard.

  • Can't move iWeb domaine to my other user account

When I copy my iWeb domaine to my other user account on my iMac by dropping it into idrop it only seems to work for awhile, then by the end of the day it's gone. Very strange.

Not familiar with iDropd and how it works.  Just copy the domain.sites file to the new Mac and place it wherever you want.  The default location is in the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Migrate my Suse Linux users account  to mac os x moutain lion?

Can someone tell me how to migrate my Suse Linux user accounts, including mail, to mac os x moutain lion?

You need write a script to map your /etc/passwd database to the values in MacOS. Use the dscl command like here: http://www.deadmarshes.com/Blog/20111105010130.html or here: http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=141798
You can't take the /etc/shadow, because MacOS encrypts the passwords other than Linux.
Your users need to change their password:
    - via Webinterface from Mountain Lion
    - or via Server.app
    - or on a linux client using the OpenDirectory (LDAP) from ML
Each mail user needs to belong to the group com.apple.access_mail. You can configure with ML-tools any forwards. Tools: Server.app (Appstore), WorkGroupManager (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1567)
I'm migrated/migrating my users from Solaris LDAP. I'm using this technology.
Migrating the Mail system is an other task.
