User confusion on migrating backed up data following reinstall

My MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8) was going slow. I decided to reinstall OSX. All my data was backed up to my compatible external HD.
I then erased my MacBook HD, and reinstalled OSX off the install disc and bundled applications disc.  I went through the steps to set up the administrator account, and did all the other things in the instal process.  I then did all necessary software updates.
When all that was complete, I connected my external HS and opened migration assistant, and imported all the data from the latest backup.
I now find that all my backed up data from before is under a different user account - named as in the old OSX set up.
How do I populate my newly installed iTunes and iPhoto with the imported data stored under the 'old' username?
Shouldn't this have happened automatically?

I'm not a whizz with iPhoto, in fact I rarely use it, but you can try first finding the iPhoto Library and checking that all the photos are there. You'll find that in your home folder (house icon) > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
That looks like a single file, but it's actually a package, so right-click (or ctrl-click) on it and choose "Show package Contents" from the context menu.
In the new window that opens, locate the Originals folder. Your pics should be there, probably in lots of sub-folders by year, month etc.
If they're all OK, try opening iPhoto with the opt key held down. Keep the opt key held until a box appears asking if you want to create a new library or use an existing one.
Choose the existing one and point the application to it.
Hopefully that will do it.
Otherwise we need someone who knows more about transferring iPhoto between drives.

  • Help: Trying to back up data to reinstall OS X

    HI All,
My computer stopped fully starting up a while back, it would go into the blue background screen and the little progress indicator bar would go almost all the way to the right but then stop on either something "WIndows" or "Printing Authentification Services" (GreenPrint, a public printing utility through my college--and one I no longer need).
I've run the Hardware Utility CD as well as Disk Repair in the Disk Utility off the OS X install CD and both mended things and said things would be fine (Drive "ja mamma" should be OK) but still no full start up.
So, I decided to just reinstall OS X. Since my computer is 2 years old and has updated a bunch of times now it's at OS X 10.3.9 and the CD's that came with it are OS X 10.3. The computer won't let me do an Archive and Install and I guess that is why. I'm fine backing up my data and doing a Clean Install except I can't get the data to go onto the new Lacie drive that I bought last week just for this.
I have the Lacie drive mounted (the computer recognizes it and will copy a certain amount of applications onto it) but then the copying stops at certain files in GarageBand for some reason. I don't know if those were corrupted or what...but...Garageband also happens to be right before the program GreenPrint alphabetically so it could be something with that. (Side advice that might be helpful is how could I delete that program off my hard drive in these startup off CD modes?)
I can only get info to copy onto the Lacie drive in the Restore mode of Disk Utility---"restoring" the disk image of my harddrive onto the Lacie drive. I can't get it to actually copy anything substantial onto the drive under the "Create New Disk Image" button. The mac guy on the phone said I should be doing the "Create New Disk Image." I just want my data off of there and somewhere safe so that I can reinstall and get a clean slate here.
    Help!
I've been without my computer for three weeks now and I'm getting super down about it.
    Any advice?
    Thank you so much.
    Best,
    C

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Before I get into backing up, may I suggest that re-installation should be considered as an avenue of last resort. It is the ultimate in invasive methods, and is not only time consuming, but involves certain risks. My suggestion would be to try to isolate the issues and deal with them first. I see you have run a number of diagnostics, but that does not mean that there is nothing else left to be done.
First try resetting the PRAM (Hold down Command + Option + P + R and hit the Power button. Hold for 3 to 5 chimes and release buttons and allow to boot.) This takes care of a number of startup issues. Let me know if that makes any difference and we can take it from there.
Check out this article titled Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier) and see if it offers any helpful information for your situation. Then post back with specifics.
    2. Now to the question of backing up. Apparently you have the external Firewire drive hooked up to the computer and the computer sees it. That's great.
I am not sure what method you are using to move your data, but I suggest cloing the entire content of your computer which you will them move back after you have gotten your computer working, whether by repairing in place or reinstalling.
Either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper will clone your drive with a minimum of effort.
That should be enough to get you started.
    Good luck.

  • How do I use Display Dialog to get back a date?

Can anyone tell me how to use Display Dialog to get back a date?
I am using the following code that does not work. It does not accept anything.  And I have searched high and low for an answer to my question and found nothing.
    repeat
display dialog "When should I remind you (date)?" default answer ""
           try
if the text returned of the result is not "" then
set the requested_text to the date returned of the result as date
                        exit repeat
                end if
           on error
               beep
    end try
    endrepeat
    display dialog requested_text
The code is based on what I found in AppleScript 1-2-3 (page 300). It shows examples for getting text and numbers but not one for dates.
For what it is worth, my goal is to create a script that will convert an email from Evernote into an iCal Reminder. To do so, I want to ask the user (myself) for the reminder's date and time. I am assuming I need to ask for each separately. I also assume that once I get the date and time for the reminder, it should be relatively straightforward to 'make' a 'todo' with an alarm.
    Thanks in advance.
    -David

    Hi David,
    Try this:
    repeat
        set theCurrentDate to current date
display dialog "When should I remind you (date)?" default answer (date string of theCurrentDate & space & time string of theCurrentDate)
set theText to text returned of result
        try
if theText is not "" then
set theDate to date theText -- a date object
                exit repeat
            end if
        on error
            beep
        end try
    end repeat
display dialog (date string of theDate & space & time string of theDate)

Now I wanted to migrate all the data to Oracle DB.
Can you suggest me the best ways to do handle the above migrations .
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Install all the required packages.
You are hitting a bug. Bug 7680459: LIBXP PACKAGE IS MISSING FROM LIST OF PACKAGES REQUIRED.
As per documentation Bug 7680459, the package libXp-1.0.0-8 is also required to invoke OUI successfully.
So, make sure that you have installed these packages including the dependency packages required.
Follow Doc ID 419646.1: Requirements For Installing Oracle 10gR2 On RHEL/OEL 5 (x86)

  • Whats the easiest way to migrate my itunes data from old failing PC to new PC so I can sync on new PC?

I have a failing PC that I sync my Ipad and Iphone to now. I have a new PC that I want to start using for this function. How do I migrate my Itunes Data Etc...so that I can sync on the new PC and not lose my apps, music, pics etc....There has to be a simple-stupid way of doing this. I have already downloaded Itunes on the new PC and just waiting for an answer to go forward.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • File associations are lost when user account is migrated from one domain to another domain (SID changes)

    Hello,
Currently we are in the middle of a migration project. We are migrating users from child domains to the root domain of one organization.
The user accounts are migrated with powershell using Move-ADObject cmdlet. This works as expected. The SIDHistory attribute is updated correctly.
Recently we received complaints from some *migrated* users - they lost their default/custom file associations. This happens only on Windows 8/Windows 8.1.
    What happens:
the user is migrated and logs on
her profile loads and everything's preserved (as expected)
the user clicks on a .jpeg file (previously associated with program XYZ)
OS asks the user to choose a program to open the file with
the user chooses a default program XYZ and the file opens
when the user clicks on a .jpeg file again - OS asks to choose a program again
i.e. the settings are not preserved.
Our investigation shows that it is connected with the UserChoice registry key and the HASH value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.SomeExt
    According to this blog
the HASH is calculated based on user's SID. But after the migration the user has new SID and the HASH becomes invalid and we hit this:
"However In Win 8, the registry changes are verified by a hash (unique per user and app)  that detects tampering by apps. In the absence of a valid hash, we ignore the default in the registry."
Currently deleting the UserChoice key for all associations solves the problem. But the user has to make all her customizations again which is undesirable.
Is there any supported way to fix this? Why the OS doesn't update the HASH after the first logon when the SID has changed as it updates the SID for the ProfileList key?
This could become big issue in large migrations.

    Hello Petar K. Georgiev,
Please check the following article to change the registry key to change back to the default file type associations.

  • How to Block Viewing Back Dated Data

    Dear All,
Please help in the following scenario :
Requirement : To Block Viewing of Back Dated Data.
For Eg : from 2012-2013 we have had data, but management wanted from 2014 April 1st
on wards viewing of data for 2012-2013 year should be blocked except for management
and not for employees or middle level guys.
Suppose if we open FBL3N, this tcode should only allow viewing of 2014 April 1st onward data
and not back dated. I mean to say not only for tcode FBL3N but across all tcodes.
I was thinking of validation @ company code level and date range, but not getting how to proceed.
    Abstract Logic :
if company code = '1000' and Date <= '31-3-2013' , do not display data for any tcode and throw error msg "your are not authorized to view data"
Your help will be highly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Mahesh

    Hi,
    You can do following :
    1. Go to transaction code FBL1N
    Enter Company code
Enter Date you want to restrict
    2.  Click on Save
    3. Next Screen
Select Protect field option for posting date
    4. Click n Save
    5. FBL1N Screen
    h
You can see that Posting date  has became non editable.
    6. Use function module RS_ABAPVARIANT_AUTH. and pass Variant name and User ID.
We hope your problem will get resolved by this methodology.

  • Can migration assistant move data from multiple disks (Mac Pro) to a single disk (iMac)

I have recently purchased an iMac and need to migrate my apps, data and accounts from a Mac Pro running OSX 10.5.8.  Does Migration Assistant accommodate a multi disk set up (I have my OS and apps on one disk and data on another) or does it only recognise one 'target' disk at a time.

yes. I migrated a server frm lion to mavericks following these notes a while back:
OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Mountain Lion
i do not recall having any problems with it.

  • How often does Firefox Sync back-up data? I see there is no preference selection allowing you to change the pre-set frequency (whatever that interval may be).

How often does Firefox Sync back-up data? I see there is no preference selection allowing you to change the pre-set frequency (whatever that interval may be).

However, the sync action only triggers every 60-minute and there is no user-configurable option provided. Although one can put a Sync icon onto the toolbar for easier access, it is still far from practical needs.
To unlock this limitation, do the following:
    1) Type “about:config” at the address bar
    2) Search for “services.sync.syncInterval”
    3) Change the value from 3600000 (milliseconds = 3600 seconds = 60 minutes) to any value (in millisecond) of your choice
    4) Close and restart Firefox
The Sync action will now trigger at the interval you just set.

  • Speeding up migration of mailbox data

I am getting ready to perform a migration of mailbox data from an iMS 5.2 HotFix 1.21 system to a SJS 7u2-7.02 64bit system by using imbackup on the old system and piping through rsh and imsrestore on the new system. I'm trying to get the best performance out of this. I have set noatime on all mailstore partitions and I am using a 128 blocksize but it seems pretty slow to me. The total amount of data I am transferring is ~276GB. The old system has 4 mailstore partition and the new one has a single partition. I am using backup groups as follows:
    groupa=a*
    groupb=b*
    groupc=c*
    etc..
My plan was to run multiple iterations of the imsbackup/imsrestore at once. In my tests while multiple iterations are running (I've tried 4 so far) I don't see much CPU utilization. RAM usage is fine and there is very little %wio. I'm getting less than 20GB transferred per hour. I would expect to see more and I don't see many resources being used on either system. During my tests I only have the watcher and store daemons running.
Does anyone have any tips on increasing the performance of this type of migration other than what I am already doing?

You should also upgrade your MS5.2 system to the latest hotfix (iMS5.2hf2.18) to address two backup related bugs:
bug #6525771 - "imsbackup does not backup acl"
bug #6202176 - "imsbackup does not backup user defined flags (keywords)"
MS7u3 will have a fix for RFE# 6669661 - "imsrestore should cache peruser flag updates" which should help to improve restore performance by reducing DB updates. You may want to wait a month or so for this release to become available.

    extended device statistics
    device r/s w/s kr/s kw/s wait actv svc_t %w %b
    cmdk0 0.7 164.3 22.1 10519.6 0.0 0.9 5.5 0 89
    cmdk1 0.0 9.9 0.0 810.0 3.8 0.5 434.5 24 25
The bottleneck in this case is "cmdk0" (a virtual disk).
I'm getting less than 20GB transferred per hour. I would expect to see more and I don't see many resources being used on either system. During my tests I only have the watcher and store daemons running.Try also starting the "ens" daemon (./start-msg ens)
Does anyone have any tips on increasing the performance of this type of migration other than what I am already doing? The main bottleneck for this procedure is I/O. If you are performing multiple simultaneous restores make sure they are destined for different LUN's (disks) so you can spread the I/O load as much as possible.

  • Taking existing Plumtree user accounts and migrating them to existing group

Does anyone know if it is possible through the Local Portal API or the EDK/IDK to take existing Plumtree user accounts and migrate them to existing groups? Any risks in doing this programmatically? Is it best done through the ui manually to maintain referential and database integrity? Just trying to assess risk here and decide if we should build this kind of tool for our customer which they are requesting. Does the Local Portal API or the EDK/IDK provide capability of "adding" a group affiliation to existing Plumtree users or would this be a bad idea?

A network account is really existing only on the server but if you use "portable homefolders" (Tiger client and server) you could "migrate" the local account to a "server" one by:
Login locally as another user with administrative rights.
Change the name of the old account folder in /Users.
Remove the "old" account locally (woun't remove the "old" folder as you changed the name) only Netinfo data.
Login using the serveraccount login/password thus creating a homefolder on the server.
Logout and back in, enable portable homefolder.
Logout and then in as a local admin and remove the new user folder.
Change the name on the old userfolder to what the new one had.
I'm not a 100% sure Netinfo has the server account UID now (added by logging in and creating the portable account?) but if it does:
"Finding and changing UIDs across the filesystem is a one-liner command:
    sudo find / -user UID -exec chown userName {} \;
(replace UID with the old UID number and userName with the new user name to associate file ownership.)"
(A portable account must have got some "kind" of UID?)
Let the machine "sync" with the server account.
If you want an "on network only" account I don't know what you need to remove locally afterwards.

  • Is it possible to migrate BCM 2003 data to BCM 2010 w/o first installing and migrating it to BCM 2007?

Obviously. I have my BCM built on the Office 2003 Outlook 2003 BCM platform.  Now with a change of operating systems and various upgrades including the installation of Office 2010 with Outlook 2010 w/BCM, I seem to have no pathway to import my 2003
BCM Backup.  I am now without access to my BCM database information and seriously compromised in my business.  Therefore the question: Is it possible to migrate BCM 2003 data to BCM 2010 w/o first installing and migrating it to Outlook
    2007 w/BCM?
    Thanks Den

The reason I want to use the Back up and Restore process is I really want to retain my original Create Date on my Business Contacts
I will try to answer your questions below:
Question: Is there a URL to download BCM 2007 … I haven’t been able to find one anymore – I saw one a couple years ago but can’t find it now.
As info, I am running this on a Test System so I know exactly how to get BCM 2003 to BCM 2010 with the Create Date intact.
    Yes, I have admin status.
BCM seems to work fine after I installed it.  I didn’t go through an extensive test though.
What do you suggest I do to confirm BCM is working since I don’t have any data in it?
After I submitted my question to this forum, I tested the Export / Import method of getting my data to BCM 2010.
I confirmed the Create Date is the Import date.  Drat!
Then I restored the OS System to the point where I had installed Office 2010 w/ BCM.
Then I Ran the install of the newer version of BCM.  It “discovered” there was a BCM version already there and asked me if I wanted to delete it.
I deleted it or the install deleted it … I can’t quite remember.
    Ran the install.
OK, here’s some weirdness I noticed:
The Download of the “newest” version of BCM I just downloaded is: V-4.00.12006.00
    (KB 2793723.)
When I looked at the version number – File > BCM It stated I had BCM V-4.00.12006.00
    This confirms the installation worked.
I ran the Restore from the backup of BCM 2003 and it states it has to convert from 2.03606.0 to 4.0.9812.0.
I knew it would have to do a conversion.
BUT, it states it’s going to convert to version 4.0.9812.0 NOT version 4.00.12006.00!!!!
    How did Version 4.00.12006.00
    get there?
Which one is the newest one?
    Any thoughts??
I clicked “OK” to start the migration.
After a while I got the “Database Migration Unsuccessful” message.
Below are some errors I found in the Event Viewer > Application.
The date on them is about a week before the latest attempt to go from BCM 2003 to BCM 2010.
They are not from the restore I just described because they don’t have the date I ran the latest restore.
    Any thoughts??

  • How do i merge my user accounts after migration assistant

    Hello,
How do I merge my user accounts after migration assistant from a time machine back up?

I wonder how to plan what account and rights to have where?
I had my old original account on my iMac, and then I "migrated" the data to a user account, in order to have some advantages with that setup. So everything worked approximately ok in this setup.
And yesterday, I tried migrating to a new Mac, and suddenly I get aware of the fact that the rights on these two earlier accounts were important.
And especially, after doing the migration to the new machine twice, until I got the Mail working, I am now totaly bewildered what solution to aim for? How to merge the two migrated admin accounts - keeping the original admin account is also important, since my file system har special rights for that one.
Could anyone give me more ideas about how to proceed? I think I have working Mail on one of the two migrated account (with 100 000 mails or so, it seems so...). The other account is the one I would like to have.
Also I think I want to use a normal user account, not an admin account for my daily use. And I have to see if things still work if I turn off the admin rights...
    Thankful for any advice!

  • TM backup: can I use two drives to back up data on two other drives?

    Hi to all!
    I have with me a 1 TB/ Thunderbolt EHD [external hard drive], a Lacie 2 TB/FW, EHD, a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD, a Seagate 3 TB/ 2 USB, EHD and [to be purchased] a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD.
I mainly use my Mac for making HD videos using FCPX.
I am planning to use these drives in the following manner as indicated by the table below:
    Drive:
    a
    1 TB,
    Thunderbolt,
    Buffalo
    b
    2 TB/ FW
    LaCie
    c
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    d
    3 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate
    e
    2 TB/ 2 usb
    Seagate backup
    [to be purchased]
    f
    500 GB, internal
    Macintosh HD
    Partitions
    1
    1
    1
    2
    1
    USAGE:
    editing videos, one
    active project at a time
    mainly for camera
    archives, music files,
    FCP events, projects
    and exported movies
    same as the LaCie,
    as a backup of data
    intend to have 2
    partitions of 1.5 TB each;
    one partition for personal
    data and the other partition
to back up data on the
    Thunderbolt [current project]
    intend to use this for
    TM back up of my
    Mac's internal HD
    applications, documents etc.
    backed up by:
    one partition of 'd'
    by the 2 TB Seagate
    backup 'e'
I would like to know whether I could do these things:
Can I use the TM backup feature in this manner of using 2 separate drive/partition [e/d] to back up data on 2 other drives [f and a]?
Further, I am manually copying files from 'b' drive to 'c' drive; without incurring further expense, can I ensure that whatever I write onto the LaCie [b] gets copied to the 'c' drive automatically?
Any thoughts, suggestions and instructions in these matters are welcome.

    EXT. DRIVES:
    a
    1 TB
    Thunderbolt
    b
    2 TB/FW
    [LaCie]
    c
    2 TB/ USB
    [Seagate]
    d
    3 TB/USB
    [Seagate]
    e
    2 TB/USB
    [Seagate]
    USAGE:
    scratch disk
    [planning to have
    only one active
    project at a time]
    camera footage
    FCPX events, projects
    and completed movies
    Same as the LaCie,
    as it's backup
    To be used as TM
    backup for my Mac's
    internal and also to
    the scratch disk.
    Planning to have it in
    2 partitions: to have
    a 'secondary' copy of
    my Mac's IHD on one
    partition and to have
    personal 'net retrievable'
    data on the other partition.
    'MY
    OBSERVATIONS'
    my projects are usually
    less than 10 minutes
    and hence I trust that
work would be fast and in
    case of drive failure, I
    would be losing only
    one project.
    I am importing camera footage
    primarily into this drive and
    being FW, data transfer is
    fast.
    Am manually copying
    files from the LaCie
    onto this.
    This drive is not a
    brand new one, but
    has been given to me
    by the company's
    agent as a replacement
to my earlier 2 TB drive
    which had failed.Hope
    this also will not fail!
    Because of the 'uncertain'
    performance of the
    3 TB Seagate, I intend
to have a copy of my
    Mac's IHD in one
partition. I intend to place only
    such data upon the other
partition that I will not be
    greatly affected should the
    drive fail.
If you can analyse this plan and give your insight upon this matter, I will be immensely happy.
Further, if this proposed use of the 3 TB Seagate is okay with you, I need to know how to remove the Thunderbolt from doing it's temporary role of TM backup and how to coronate the 3TB Seagate as its successor.
FYI, I would be switching off TM from functioning whenever I am editing video; I would be switching it on only after a full editing session.
Another question on my mind is this: do I need to partition the drive 'e' at all?
