User Defined Function VS join - Performance....

Hi All,
while linking the mulitple table and getting the values ....which one is the best ?
Joining or User defined function.....
single row function
select a.name , get_salary(empid) from emp a;
Note : get_salary function will return the salary from salary tables.
Using joins
select a.name ,b.salary from emp a, salary b
where a.empid=b.empid;
which is the performancewise best ?
also if you give any related document also fine.
Thanks in advance.

Don't use such functions for joins. The function itself has to query the salary table. It will run the query against the salary table separately for each row that it reads from the emp table. You will end up with multiple recursive calls and possibly inconsistency in the output. (Imagine what would happen if the salary table were updated and commited while this query was running -- some rows would have been read with the pre-update values and others with the updated values).
Specifying the join in the query ensures that a single SQL call is executed and provides read consistency across all the rows it reads. And it is much faster, being one single parse and execute.

  • SQL User Defined Functions for performing statistical calculations

    Hi!
       I hope you can help.  I just wasn’t sure where to go with this question, so I’m hoping you can at least point me in the right direction.
       I’m writing a SQL Server stored procedure that returns information for a facility-wide scorecard-type report.  The row and columns are going to be displayed in a SQL Server Reporting Services report.
       Each row of information contains “Current Month” and “Previous Month” numbers and a variance column.  Some rows may compare percentages, others whole numbers, others ratios, depending on the metric they’re measuring.  For each row/metric the company has specified whether they want to see a t-test or a chi-squared statistical test to determine whether or not there was a statistically significant difference between the current month and the previous month.
       My question is this:  Do you know where I can find a set of already-written user defined functions to perform statistical calculations beyond the basic ones provided in SQL Server 2005?  I’m not using Analysis Services, so what I’m looking for are real SQL User Defined Functions where I can just pass my data to the function and have it return the result within a stored procedure.
       I’m aware that there may be some third-party statistical packages out there we could purchase, but that’s not what I’m looking for.   And I’m not able to do anything like call Excel’s analysis pack functions from within my stored procedure.   I’ve asked.   They won’t let me do that.   I just need to perform the calculation within the stored procedure and return the result.
       Any suggestions?  Is there a site where people are posting their SQL Server UDF’s to perform statistical functions?  Or are you perhaps aware of something like a free add-in for SQL that will add statistical functions to those available in SQL?   I just don’t want to have to write my own t-test function or my own chi-squared function if someone has already done it.
     Thanks for your help in advance!  Oh, and please let me know if this should have been posted in the TSQL forum instead.  I wasn't entirely sure.

  • ? Regarding 'SQL user-defined function' execution performance ?

    Hi All,
    I have an user-defined function in SQL which am using in a SQL select statement and i found that the execution time taken by the user-defined function is 9-10 minutes as a result of which my whole query execution time is affected.
    How to i improvise the execution time. Should i do some sort of scheduling for executing the user-defined functions only. Am new to the database world. Your early response with a good suggestion would really be appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance.

    Try to read SQL tuning documents along with TkProf. Then only you will be able to detect the problem.

  • Using User Defined Function is SQL

    Hi
    I did the following test to see how expensive it is to use user defined functions in SQL queries, and found that it is really expensive.
    Calling SQRT in SQL costs less than calling a dummy function that just returns
    the parameter value; this has to do with context switchings, but how can we have
    a decent performance compared to Oracle provided functions?
    Any comments are welcome, specially regarding the performance of UDF in sql
    and for solutions.

    I find that inline SQL is bad for performance but
    good to simplify SQL. I keep thinking that it should
    be possible somehow to use a function to improve
    performance but have never seen that happen.inline SQL is only bad for performance if the database design (table structure, indexes etc.) is poor or the way the SQL is written is poor.
    Context switching between SQL and PL/SQL for a User defined function is definitely a way to slow down performance.
    Obviously built-in Oracle functions are going to be quicker than User-defined functions because they are written into the SQL and PL/SQL engines and are optimized for the internals of those engines.
    There are a few things you can do to improve function
    performance, shaving microseconds off execution time.
    Consider using the NOCOPY hints for your parameters
    to use pointers instead of copying values. NOCOPY
    is a hint rather than a directive so it may or may
    not work. Optimize any SQL in the called function.
    Don't do anything in loops that does not have to be
    done inside a loop.Well, yes, but it's even better to keep all processing in SQL where possible and only resort to PL/SQL when absolutely necessary.
    The on-line documentation has suggested that using a
    DETERMINISTIC function can improve performance but I
    have not been able to demonstrate this and there are
    notes in Metalink suggesting that this does not
    happen. My experience is that DETERMINISTIC
    functions always get executed. There's supposed to
    be a feature in 11g that acually caches function
    return values.Deterministic functions will work well if used in conjunction with a function based index. That can improve access times when querying data on the function results.
    You can use DBMS_PROFILER to get run-time statistics
    for each line of your function as it is executed to
    help tune it.Or code it as SQL. ;)

  • User defined function to set a default value of a column

    ORA-04044: procedure, function, package, or type is not allowed hereUsing PL/SQL code like that raises 2 basic problems. If that PL/SQL code for the calculating the column default breaks, what happens to the SQL insert statements against that table. These will need to fail as the table definition depends on the PL/SQL code. This is problematic as this dependency simply increases the complexity of the SQL object.
    The 2nd issue is performance. PL/SQL code needs to be executed by the PL/SQL engine. This means a context switch from the SQL engine to the PL/SQL engine in order to determine the default value for that column. Context switching is a performance overhead.
    So even if it was possible to use a PL/SQL function as parameter for the SQL default clause, I would not be that keen to use it.

  • How to check empty idoc fields in user defined function

    Dear All,
    I am working on an IDOC to file scenario. In my user defined function, I want to check whether a particular field of the idoc is populated. I can perform this test in message mapping by comparing the field with an empty constant.
    How can I do the same test in an advanced user defined function? I have tried all the following, but none has worked so far
    If (a.length == 0) ….
    If (a[0].length == 0) …
    If (a[0] == “”) …
    If (a[0] == “ “)…
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thx/Farshad

    To check whether an element is not available:
    if (a.length == 0)
    but you have to set cache to context. If you set cache to queue, it will not work, as in this case the context changes are part of the array a.
    To check whether an element is empty:
    if (a[0].equals(""))

  • Matscript node void ouputs when calling user-defined functions

    Hi,
    I have a (for most of you, probably simple) problem with calling user defined function within a mathscript node.
    I have a script inside a MathScript node which calls three UD functions. When I try to output variables, LabView sets their type to void, so I cannot use them further. this would imply, that the script is nondeterministic, (since the types would get set at runtime). However, if I replace the call to the UD function with the actual contents of the function, the variable becomes deterministic. Now, since I have several call to these functions, I have no desire in writing all of them many time, introducing many variables etc. What would you advise me to do?
    Find attached my scripts and functions.
    I need this script running on a RT Target, and have been battling this for weeks, with almost no success!
    Thanks, Regards,
    Luka

    MArtin, hello!
    As far as I know, LabView checks the syntax as you write in the MS Node, and since there is no X mark next to the line number, it indicates, that the syntax is correct. Since i have set the path to the UDF in both the VI options and in the general MAthScript setting, how does adding the path command help? even if I add path('directory') command, a yellow exclamation mark appears, saying the command is slowing down performance.
    (this is the original help explanation:
    The warning glyph indicates that LabVIEW operates with reduced error checking at edit time and slower run-time performance for the MathScript Node. The following conditions cause the warning glyph to appear. To remove the warning glyph from the MathScript Node and improve run-time performance, modify your script as follows to resolve the condition in your script:
    Your script calls addpath or pathremove (legacy name rmpath), or calls cd, path, or userpath with one or more inputs, which change the MathScript search path list at run time. Remove these functions and use the MathScript page to configure the default search path)
     Could you please post a screenshot of your VI, just to see, if you've got anything different set up?
    I am running LV2012.

  • Accessing a Cache From an Oracle CQL User-Defined Function

    According to the docs ...
    I am to use the following element to set the cache property in my bean...
    <wlevs:property name="cache" ref="cache-id"/>
    However, when I set it, the assembly does not validate.
    If I use <property>, I get a NullPointerException on each request when my processor runs.
    Using the same CQL code..
    Without the <property> tag, the call to the user-defined function works (but I don't have the cache attribute set obviously).
    Here is the excerpt from my assembly...
    <bean id="cacheFunction" class="ou.cep.function.CacheFunction">
    <property name="cache" ref="myCache"/>
    </bean>
    <!-- The default processor for OCEP 11.0.0.0 is CQL -->
    <wlevs:processor id="myProcessor">
    <wlevs:listener ref="CacheChannel"/>
    <wlevs:function ref="cacheFunction" function-name="isValidID" exec-method="isValidID">
    </wlevs:function>
    </wlevs:processor>
    To repeat, with the same CQL with the user-defined function call, if I remove the property element from the bean definition, I can call the function successfully (it just doesn't do what I need it to do). In this case, I am still using the ref=cacheFunction for the wlevs:function within the processor.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Edited by: fl0at on Oct 5, 2010 12:28 PM

    The case is solved, not sure I could explain why, but...
    This implementation of the user-defined function was a migration from an implementation using the same cache in the join. So, when I removed the cache reference in the source stream (where I am now executing a function that accesses the cache), the problem went away and everything is working.
    I can explain further if there are questions.
    If anyone has thoughts on this, please advise.
    As always, thanks for the help.

  • Error in conditional map using User Defined Function

    All,
    In my mapping I basically have a user defined function that returns the filename of my inbound file from the adapter-specific message attributes (file adapter).  I know this is coded properly because if I simply assign this function to my destination field I can see the filename in the payload XML.
    However if I conditionally check that returned value using if,then,else I get an error message stating:
    "During the application mapping com/sap/xi/tf/_MaterialData2ZcustProdMastMulti_ a com.sap.aii.utilxi.misc.api.BaseRuntimeException was thrown: RuntimeException in Message-Mapping transformation"
    Essentially in my if I'm checking if the value returned by my user defined function is equal to the constant "SOMECONSTANT" then I'm setting my destination field to some other constant value.  Otherwise it's equal to a different constant value.
    Any thoughts?

    Claus,
    Thanks for the help.  I actually had figured the problem out on my own.  Sorry for not updating the thread sooner.  What happened was this (as I suspected it wasn't related to my user defined function).  For the newbies out there (of which I'm one) the problem was I was comparing strings in the graphical mapping tool using the Boolean "EQUALS" rather than the Text "EQUALSS".
    Can you give yourself points for solving

  • How can I use Seeburger java functions on SAP XI's user defined functions?

    Hi All,
    As my title implies; how can I use Seeburger java functions on SAP XI's user defined functions?  I've tried searching over the net in tutorials regarding this topic but I failed to find one; can someone provide me information regarding my question? thanks very much.
    best regards,

    Hi Mike !
    You should check your documentation about which java classes you need to reference in the "import" section of your UDF. And also deploy the java classes into the java stack or include them as a imported archive in integration repository...it should be stated in the seeburger documentation.
    What kind of functions are you trying to use?
    Regards,
    Matias.

    I have made a user defined function in a java class and configured this function in the EPN assembly file under the processor tag.
    But when i am trying to access the function in the config.xml file , it is giving me an error in the query.
    Please provide urgent help that how to write the exact query.

    Hi,
    In the EPN Assembly file use
    <bean class="com.bea.wlevs.example.FunctionCEP.TestFunction"/>
    instead of
    <bean>com.bea.wlevs.example.FunctionCEP.TestFunction</bean>

  • Getting error while using user-defined function in transform activity

    Hi
    I designed one user-defined function to add 2 nos following the
    link:http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E16764_01/integration.1111/e10224/bp_xslt_mpr.htm .
    Under this i followed the portion creating user-defined function.
    After deploying,i'm getting an error stating:"<summary>
    An error occurs while processing the XPath expression; the expression is ora:doXSLTransformForDoc("xsl/Transformation_1.xsl", $inputVariable.payload).
    </summary>
    <detail>

    Did you copy the jar file of your java classes to MIDDLEWARE_Home/user_projects/domains/soa_domain/lib?

  • Error while using user defined function in reports

    Hi,
    When I use the below user defined function in oracle reports I got the wrong number of arguments error
    select test_function(id,a_number,v_date-14,b_number) from dual;
    If I remove -14 from the argument it works. But iIneed to subtract 14 days from the date.
    Thanks for your help.

    select test_function(id,a_number,v_date-14,b_number) from dual;
    you have to give the command like this to_date(v_date,'dd-mon-yyyy')-14
    because the v_Date you choose in the parameter form is not having the corrent date format
    the format dd-mon-yyyy is the format in which v_date is passed by the user.

  • User Defined Function (Part 2)

    Hi,
    István Korös has finally solved my problem on User Defined Function.
    See
    My objective was to write a simple UDF to represent the following formula which Gordon Du gave me:
    (DATEADD (s, -1,
             DATEADD (mm, (DATEDIFF (m,0,@refdtzz ) + @mthnumber),  0)))
    However, the solution proposed by István, although it works perfectly, leaves me scratching my head. Let's see why?
    The only difference between my solution and that proposed by István is that István enclosed the UDF name between .
    I wonder how this can make the vital difference between a (simple query!) that works well and one that gets blocked.
    I tried several combinations of and am in for a few surprises, listed below. Can anybody explain what's going on?
    Solution proposed by István:
    CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[udf_EndOfMonth]
    and executed as:
    select  [dbo].udf_EndOfMonth (@refdt1 , 1)
    Remarks: works perfectly
    If I execute the UDF with exaclly the same name as in CREATE, it does not work
    CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[udf_EndOfMonth]
    and executed as:
    select  [dbo].[udf_EndOfMonth] (@refdt1 , 1)
    Error Msg: Must specify table to select from
    If I don't put the , the function is created, but the execution of the calling query returns error
    CREATE FUNCTION dbo.udf_EndOfMonth
    Remarks : Creation OK
    and executed as:
    select  dbo.udf_EndOfMonth (@refdt1 , 1)
    Error Msg: Must specify table to select from
    It seems that the only combination that works is that provided by István.
    This is surely a simple UDF.
    I don't know what to do if I attack a more complicated UDF.
    Grateful if anybody could help light my way.
    Thanks
    Leon Lai

    Hi Leon,
    As István has already pointed out, there is no documentation for those small differences to make the SQL work or not. He must be tested quite a few times to find the actual working code. This question can only be answered by the developer who made this part for B1.
    Thanks,
    Gordon
