User folder permissions

Hello,
The environment: about 100 users, about 25 Windows 7 PC, DC = Server 2003 SBS, AD, local profiles with redirected desktops, documents, start menus.
The special case: Some (generic) accounts are not supposed to be allowed to load media from external sources, such as flash drives. They must get their media from a server location.
The part of the solution I have: Using User GPO, you can block access to removable devices for these accounts. This works - flash drives, external cd roms, hard drives, etc do not open when using those accounts.
The issue: It is possible for a user who has external drive access to login, copy the files to his local profile on the HDD. Then it is possible for him to add the generic account that should not have access to the security permissions, allowing that generic
account access to media they should not be able to access.
Does anyone have any way of preventing a user from adding anyone to their local profile on the HDD? As the user is a owner on their local profile, and the profile doesn't get created until they log in for the first time, they can change any permissions and
add whoever they want in.
Please try to avoid a solution that runs a script after a user logs in and changes the permissions. We have 0 login scripts, everything done through group policy, and we want to stay that way if at all possible.
Thanks

Going to bump this...

  • Changing user folder permissions

My wife and I both have admin accounts on my computer. I want to be able to easily transfer files from my user folder to hers without running into permissions problems. For example, I may want to take a photo from my Pictures folder and drop it in her Pictures folder. I can't do that because access is blocked to everyone but her. It's irritating to have to drop the file on a neutral ground, log in to her account, and take the file and put it in her folder. I logged in as root and tried to change the permissions by giving admin group read and write privileges but it gives an error of -60002 if I try that. I can't change the permissions while not logged in as root since the option is greyed out. Any ideas? I don't care one bit about "compromising security".

    Hi Xeep,
Error -60002 is "The authorization parameter is invalid".
From your account, have you first tried changing the Owner to yu, then the Group to admin, then the owner back to her?
    Or better yet, try BatChMod...

  • Repair user folder Permissions using terminal

Disk utility won't repair ownership & permmisions in the root user folder. I did a transfer of apps from my old Tibook and something went wrong. Some of my folders list "Owner" as unkown etc. I had this issue a few years back when restoring from a cloned drive, and someone on this forum suggested a Terminal command to reset my user folder back to defaults with the proper ownership and that worked! Unfortunately I can't remember the command line ("sudo chown...something like that). Changing permissions on each folder and file using the "get info" command is too tedious. Thanks for any help.
    MBP 17in 2.33ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    TiBook 667 Mac OS X (10.3.7)
    TiBook 667   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Since the cursor advanced to the next line after entering each command, and no error message was returned, it sounds like the commands worked.
The Get Info panel is sometimes slow to reflect permissions changes. Try control-option-clicking Finder's Dock icon and select Relaunch. See if that kick-starts the Get Info permissions report.
You can verify that everything changed correctly by typing this into a Terminal window:
    ls -laR ~ > ~/Desktop/list.txt
That will create a file on your desktop called list.txt. Open it with TextEdit. It will list every file and folder in your home directory. If your username is listed as the owner of everything then it worked correctly.

  • Change multiple user folder permissions

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me. Stupidly I moved the folder where the users directories are with the finder. the result is I am having problems when a user logs is due to incorrect permissions. does anyone have a script or terminal command I can use to correct this issue. basically I need the folder name to be the owner and no access by other users. Thanks!

Hi Anthony, you could use something crude like
    #!/bin/bash
    Users=/Users.txt
    data=/pathto_Homedirectories
#for a list of users from data folder
    ls -1 $data > $Users
    for name in $(awk '{print $1}' < "
    sudo chown -R $name $data/$name
    done
    exit
This is assuming the Home Directory names are standard.
You will need to edit the value for data.
As always test, test, test and have a good known working backup.

  • Limiting User permissions to the user folder

    Hello,
So I have recently been placed in charge of a network.  The prior network administrator arranged the permissions so that users have access to the user folder on the server.  The issue comes in where unauthorized users can access other user's documents
on their desktop or in the other user's My Documents.  I have tried changing the permissions so that users only have access to their own user folder, but so far any change to the permissions cuts the user off from their own desktop and documents.
Is their a way to limit users access so they only have access to their own user profile?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Is the profile roaming profile are local profile. if roaming profile the fileserver Share folder should have the permission administrator full permission and user read permission
In active directory user properties on the profile select \\servername\sharename\%username%
    This will resolve your problem
    Thanks

  • Give a user read permissions to folder but deny him/her copying contents? Is it possible?

    Hi,
Is there a way to give a user read permissions to a folder but deny him/her copy permissions? I have been searching for way to do this in windows server 2012 R2 without any luck. I have a folder that i would like a user to see the contents but not change
or copy it. Any one who know the tricks?
    Thanks,
    Jama.

    Yes,
Give the user read permissions to a folder, then he only read, but not write. Additionally, you can set Deny Write, to overwrite any inherited permissions.

  • Trying to reset home folder permissions and acls

I have been having a nightmare of a time with Adobe apps, primarily Premiere Pro, crashing CONSTANTLY and randomly. I have no idea what's causing it and have been going back & forth to no avail for days with Adobe, and trying a bunch of different things. I keep getting an error that says Thread 0 Crashed com.apple.main .......
I am on a 2014 Mac Pro 12 core, 64GB Ram with dual AMD D700 GPUs, running Yosemite.
The steps I have tried have included messing around with various permissions within the Adobe folders and enclosed files. That led me to then need to completely reinstall my OS from recovery mode. I tried multiple times going into recovery mode, doing resetpassword in Terminal, and then trying to reset the home folder permissions from there, but it just never says done and don't think it's doing anything. I have let it sit for hours and not gotten anything back on it.
I searched the forums and found an older thread where Linc Davis had posted a terminal code to put in, and tried that. Many said that worked for them, but it didn't seem to change anything for me. After doing that, i did go back into recovery mode and see if i could reset the permissions from there, but again, just greyed out the Done button and stayed for hours.
I am at a complete loss on what to do and really need some help. I am days overdue on projects because of Adobe's crashes and because of the time I've been wasting trying to re-sort out the IT stuff that I don't really know much about. Can you please help? ANYONE?

it's only been with adobe applications, but unfortunately, they are just not being helpful. I'll paste a crash report here below, maybe you can make sense of it. They can't seem to and I certainly can't. I really don't know what to do. All they keep doing is asking me more questions, which to me doesn't make a whole lot of sense in itself. I would think that an Adobe Crash Report should tell Adobe exactly what's causing the crash. So frustrating and right now highly detrimental to my business.
The only thing that is happening of question besides the Adobe apps crashing is that I can't reset my home folder permissions through the recovery mode. I tried last night and let it run overnight and this morning, it still had not said 'Done'. So i'm not sure if that denotes a different problem somewhere

  • How do I MERGE several "ghost" copies of my user-folder back into one single identity?

This is my current storage directory for THUNDERBIRD: (on my nearly brand-new PC workstation!)

Others that I would like to "fold in" to this identity are located in analogous file-paths
    such as:

---However, NONE of these message-organizing sub-folders ACTIVELY show up within Thunderbird...
ALL of them seem to show "ghost" copies of the folders and subafolder---in the left-column folder-list view window
but they are mute and unresponsive, and do not SHOW the .emlx messages contained within them....
Drilling into the PC's filing-system (Window Explorer, like Apple's FINDER) does show that the indiv. emlx. mail files
DO exist and ARE readable as plain-text----ugly as hell with header information aond other control characters framing the text-message contents.
How do I "shuffle together" (merge?) the various user-folders into ONE user folder, without overwriting folders and messages?
How do I resurrect the functionality of the "ghost" folder icons in the left-most column?

  • How To Delete a User Folder from the Catalog?

When logged into the Catalog Manager as the Administrator I am not allowed to delete individual user folders, even when the user has been deleted via the 'Manage Presentation Catalog Groups and Users' link in the front end. If the Administrator user cannot do this, who can? I also can't do it if I log into the Catalog Manager as the specific user (and I also can't change the permissions on that users folder, as that user!).
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Your second option doesn't work for me. I've got no ability to drill into the individual user folders or change their permissions. The normal padlock button is not next to any of the user folders except the Administrator folder.
I didn't have the ability to take OBI down so I could try using the Catalog Manager offline, so I deleted the user folders in the file system directly.

  • Exchange 2013 SP1 RU4 Public Folder Permissions

    Hi All,
    Exchange 2013 SP1 RU4 Public Folder Permissions
We have a weird problem after migrating our PF from Exchange 2010 to 2013.
Users do not have permission to create or delete in PF even thou they have owner permissions.
    Example:-
I have created a  '\test1' folder in the root which has the following permissions (this works OK):-
    Myself - Owner
    Default - Author
    Anonymous - None
I have created another folder '\admin\test2' folder which has the same permissions as above but i get the "cannot create the folder. you don't have appropriate permissions to perform this operation"
I get this problem across all of the folders that were migrated. clean folders created at the root with the correct  permission function as per expected.
    Regards
    Paul Sheldon

    Hi,
I recommend you use the Get-PublicFolderClientPermission -Identity publicfolder command to check the client access permissions to a public folder.
If possible, please remove permission and re-add permission to check the result.
    Best regards,
    Belinda

  • ERROR You do not have enough access privileges / Music Folder Permissions

OS...W XP iTunes 7.6.2.9 HP. Classic 60 GB HP iPod. I have this error when I try to import some CD's. Am trying to import a brand new cd I just bought and error reads...
*"Error occured while converting the file "Large Time" ( or whatever the 1st songs name may be). You do not have enough ACCESS PRIVILEGES for this operation.*
iTunes could not save your music folder because you do not have write access. Check permissions on your Music folder and folders in your Music Folder, then try converting this file again".
Well I've tried every way I can think to check the permissions and am clueless. I do know that after going through my pc settings for folders, that after some time, I was able to save the last playlist and sync it. I've no idea why, but I do know I have this problem frequently. And it's BAaaaack.
If you find or have the answer please post...ty. MP3 players seem more user friendly, using WMP, but this iPod was more for the money.

    To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

  • How can I access my user folder on a second boot partition?

Hi there. Thank you for reading this. I am at a bit of a loss although I have searched several forums to find someone having the same problem:
I use my Macbook Pro in the office and at home. To keep things strictly apart and have to separate Time Machine backup procedures, I have divided my harddrive into two boot partitions ('office' and 'private') and installed Mountain Lion on both of them. Now occasionally when I am at the office I would like to access my  user folder on 'private' to retrieve a file from the documents folder there (e.g. a paper I gave in my free time but would like to send to a colleague). Now although I see the 'private' volume, and the other user folder and the Documents folder in it with a red 'No Access' badge, even when I  set read/write permissions via Command-I > Permissions for my current account, I do not see any files in it apart from Microsoft User Data. I have tried enabling the root user but with the sam result.
Do I really have to shut down the computer and boot with the 'private' boot volume in order to access the files on 'private'>user?
Looking forward to your suggestions! Thank you in advance!
    Christian

To solve this issue permanently, is to first disconnect both TimeMachine drives.
Boot into one partition and consider it history, make a note of everything, apps, export bookmarks, serial keys and files to a regular external drive. (non TimeMachine)
If on a hard drive, consider the first partition for performance, the second one is going to be slower. (SSD no need)
Next what you do is boot into the first partition and use Disk Utility to erase (with zero option if a hard drive) the other partition. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the first partition to the second. (should be about equal sizes or tweak before cloning.)
Repair permissions on both partitions in Disk Utility.
Next boot into the second partition and install/uninstall apps and files. etc and set it backup up the way you had it.
Once your sure, then update TimeMachine for each one.
Now you will be able to easily access the other bootable partition as long as your logged into the same account name on the first partition., in other words you can access the same named account on both partitions and trade files without rebooting.
Because it's a clone, you have the same access privileges to the files on the other partition.
If your a power user, your going to find bootable clones are a much superior option than TimeMachine
    Most commonly used backup methods

  • Missing Home Folder in Users Folder

I have a very strange situation where my Home folder (short name "Peter") does not appear in my "Users" Folder. It appears on the Finder sidebar and if i do a search it is found by the finder in the "Users" folder. I can access it from either of these two methods but I can not go to the "Users" folder and find it (I only have one other folder in the "Users" folder and that is the folder "Shared")
I have repaired permissions several times and did a disk verify with disk utilities and nothing was found as a problem. I did not change the name of this user at any time and it shows up as a user in the Accounts preferences. I can create a new user and it shows up in the "Users" folder and is removed once I delete the new user.
This is very wierd. Any help!

It is possible that somehow or other the "invisible" bit has got set on your Home folder.
Take a look at Francine's article on invisible volumes/folders and see if that helps.

  • Missing files, user folder, application folder and system folder

    I am using a MacBook Pro 2011 model with OS X 10.9.4.
Since I bought the machine several years ago, I have had only a few small problems with it. Yesterday I wanted to reduce the size of a video, so I downloaded a video compressor/converter software, and left the computer on and the program compressing my video whilst I went off to work. When I returned home, the compressing program had a pop-up saying ''Could not complete compression, system full'' or something along those lines.... After trying to play the movie without success, I decided that I would restart my computer, as it had been on all day.
When the computer restarted, it came up with the grey loading bar, which usually comes up when I have done a software update. It disappeared quite soon and several minutes later, my user profile appeared. I logged in as normal, and then tried to open my browser. An error message popped up stating"Can't open user profile directory, because you lack sufficient privileges. You might want to contact the administrator of this machine". I then tried to open other programs and they all came up with similar messages and did not open. Skype stated "Can't create a lock file at Users/Lauren/Library...etc".
I then went to Finder to look at my applications and they were ALL GONE! Then I went to a folder I have with all my files called "My files", and although the primary folders were visible, "SCHOOL,WORK, HOLIDAYS PICS, etc", these folders were empty. I then checked my User folder, and my systems folder and these were empty too. However, the Desktop and Documents folders still contain the documents that were previously there, and my background images remained the same.
I tried to open Word, and although it is also missing from the applications folder, and it opened, also allowing me to open a document which I know is located within the 'empty' folders. I have a feeling that my documents and files are still on my computer, but I don't know how to access them!
Please if someone could shed light on the situation! All my work files and personal files are on this computer and I would be devastated to loose them!
Let me know if you need any more ino or screen shots!
    Kind regards,
    Lauren

OS X- Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup
You need to start by doing the following:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • File and folder permissions for Adobe Photoshop CS5

    Good day,
I am an IT specialist and I work for a Canadian governement agency and we are having an issue with Photoshop CS5. After successfully installing Photoshop CS5 from the Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium set(using a local machine administrator account), Photoshop crashes immidiatly after launching it(even with the local administrator account). The exact error message is as follows:
The instruction at "0x230dad8dc" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
I know this is an environement issue and not an application or hardware issue since I was able to successfully install and run Adobe Photoshop CS5 on a plain vanilla install of Windows SP3 XP on the same model of workstation(HP DC7800). This later also confirms it is not a RAM or video adapter issue either. My experience tells me it would be more related to file/folder permissions on the workstation(although I'm open to other suggestions).  Because we are a governement agency, our workstations have machine and user policies and desktop configurations that get applied to the workstations automatically upon joining our domain via GPOs and SMS. Certain system files and folder permissions may be locked down for security reasons therefor I was wondering is someone has a list of files and folders that Adobe CS5 needs access to upon startup in order to properly function?
If anyone would like more details or information please let me know and I'll try to be more specific.
Thanks in advance to all who take the time to read and help out!

I appreciate that you're trying to surmise what's different, and it's good that you have had success with similar/identical hardware.  At least you know it can work.
However, I wouldn't bet just yet that it's a permissions issue.  I'd think you should get a specific error if a locked-down file needed to be accessed, not a null pointer crash.  The Photoshop installer should be setting up the proper permissions on its own files for it to run.
Is it exactly the same video card as the other computer, on which Photoshop works?
Are you sure the video drivers are up to date with the same version as on the other computer?
At exactly what point during startup does the failure occur (i.e., is the splash screen showing, and what does the status line in the splash screen say it's doing)?
