UserEventAgent problem, cannot unmount disc?

UserEventAgent seems to block the unmounting process for external discs. I have studied several threads that circles around the issue and come to the conclusion that it is a part of the UserEventAgent since:
a) Unmounting works fine in safe mode
b) Unmounting works when UserEventAgent is killed with Mountain Lion Cahe Cleaner
The question is, what seems anormal in this this UserEventAgent log?

I would be very grateful if anyone with an expertise on the subject could check the log out!
The problem persist on any discs, NTFS or HFS+. My version of mountain lion is a fresh install however the problem was also there after an upgrade from snow to mountain lion.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copy-and-paste as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.

  • ERROR: CANNOT UNMOUNT DISC.  help!!

i am returning a leased computer and need to erase everything. I used disc utility with firewire to my G5. everything is ok till i get this message??. what's up?

In Terminal use the umount command. You will need to know the identifier of the disk you're trying to unmount.  The command will look something like 'umount /dev/disk1'.

  • Problems unmounting discs since Lion

I now use Mountain Lion on my MacPro, but since Lion, I have noticed that I am frequently having problems unmounting discs such as USB flash drives. I will right-click to eject and sometimes it will eject immediately, but more often than not, it doesn't. Then I get a message saying it can't eject and do I want to "force eject" it? I sometimes click OK and then about 3 clicks later, it is ejected. Sometimes, I click Try Again and it will be a minute or so and it then ejects it.
I have also noticed that if I want to reformat a flash drive or run Disk Repair on an external drive, it sometimes will give me the message it cannot do it because the drive could not be unmounted.
I also notice that if I eject the drive I want to erase and then put it back in the same USB slot, it usually will let me run Disk Repair or format it that time.
I never had these problems with the same Mac until Lion came along. It is very annoying.

This isn't an answer. You might want to submit feedback to Apple so they are aware of the problem:

  • Problems Restoring Erasing Drive: Cannot Unmount Disk

I just intalled an SSD in my macbook pro, and would like to use my old hard drive as a storage disk. When i boot into the ssd (mountian lion) and try to erase the old disk it says it cannot unmount the disk. i have also tried booting off an external disk (also mountain lion) and i get the same problem. Any ideas would be greatly apprectiated.

Sometimes when DU can't unmount a drive or volume it's because something else like Spotlight or TimeMachne has it in use. Set your Spotlight to ignore the drive.
Also try using command r booting into Recovery for Disk Utlity there, it doesn't have Spotlight, TM or anything like that so it should unmount the drive.
If your still having problems and you don't care about the data on the drive, then you can try buring a disk of Parted Magic ISO and see if you can option key or c key boot off of it and go hog wild messing up the drive's data and boot flags.
Once that's done use Recvoery to Secure Erase (middle selection) and that will take care of it, then format GUID OS X extended journaled, GUID or MBR + exFAT or whatever.

  • Cannot eject disc from iMac (physical problem not  software)

*Problem description*: When my iMac attempted eject a disc I could hear a thump and feel the disc hitting something on the case after which it would give up and reload the disc. The cause of this problem was a misalignment of the drive with the slot on the case. This in turn was caused because the front and the body of the iMac (the back part) had sprung apart a bit.
*Problem solution*: The solution was to squeeze the front and body together by placing my hand on the upper right corner of the iMac with the palm on the front and the fingers on the body. I could feel the bezel and body press back together with a very mild snap. After that there were no more problems with ejecting discs.
Comments: I move my iMac around a bit and assume the the separation of front from back happened during transport.

    1. Click on Finder or your Desktop and with Finder on the Menu Bar open Finder Preferences. Next click on the Sidebar tab in Finder Preferences and make sure that (CDs, DVDs and iPods) is checked.

  • HT1526 I'm trying to delete files from the trash and an .InProgress file in Time Machine that cannot be moved to the trash. I cannot unmount the TM disk either.  If I use the chflags -R nouchg  command, I get a "Resource busy" message. Any suggestions?

I've got one or maybe two problems.  Time Machine routinely crashes and there is a file in the TM folder that is an .InProgress file at the end of successful backups. Can't delete it, even using various sudo commands in Terminal.  These come back with a "Resource busy" message.
Similarly, there is a Microsoft Office alias in my trash that will not delete, again including various delete or Terminal commands.  Also "Resource busy"
I can't reformat the TM volume since it cannot unmount and it also cannot unmount the whole disk, which contains some other backup files I'd rather keep.
    Any suggestions?
    Mike

I'm not sure I can be very helpful since I was doing a lot of things and ultimately the problems went away.  But one thing that definitely seemed to help was to shut down, restart, do something, shut down again and repeat.  So with a clean start, try to move the file to the trash.  If that works, shut down restart and look to see if it is still in the trash.  Empty the trash. Shut down if it appears to empty and then restart.  It seemed sometimes that the computer was doing what I wanted then something was overriding this and restoring.  The shutdowns immedately after I could do something but before it engaged an override operation seemed to keep this from happening.
Sorry to not have more to offer but...

  • Disk Util cannot unmount ext HD to format or partition

Computer:  MacBook Pro Retina 13" latest model.  All updates have been applied.
I have a 1TB WD external harddrive.  It has 2 partitions (1 FAT32, 1 Mac OS Extended).  This drive was working properly until one day it stopped mounting.
    Problem:
    - Mac OS Extended partition:  Will not mount.  I can see it greyed out in Disk Utility.  The entire drive will not unmount.
    - FAT32:  Mounts in OSX but will not unmount.  I can access FAT32 partition via Parallels (Win7).
Bigger Problem:  I'm cannot re-format or re-partition the drive.  Disk Utility provides an error that the drive cannot unmount.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I made a mistake in the original post.  I CANNOT access the FAT32 via Parallels because it will not unmount from OSX.
This is how I fixed it....
Booted up my Windows laptop and used Computer Management to delete both volumes (partitions).
    Re-partitioned as 1 partition (ex-fat) and formatted.
Booted up MacBook and used Disk Utility to re-format as Mac OS Extended.
This appears to work fine, and I am able to use it for Time Machine now.
My question now is:  How could I have accomplished this in OSX?  I know some people will say maybe the drive is going bad.  For this question, let's assume it's ok.

  • Disc repair error "couldn't unmount disc"

Hello alll! I would very much appreciate any help from anyone!
A few days ago I had reason to believe that I got a virus on my Macbook Pro. My hard drive might have been corrupted. I was unable to turn on my MacBook, with the screen frozen on the opening apple logo for hours. Not being tech-savvy in the slightest, I decided to simply erase my "Macintosh HD" disc in Disk Utility (restarting computer, holding down alt key) and then restore my Macbook with a recent back up that I have on an external hard drive. After erasing my disc, when I try to restore with my backup, my "Macintosh HD" disc doesn't appear. Only the "Repair HD" disk appears. I tried to repair my "Macintosh HD" disk in Disk Utility, but recieved an error message "couldn't unmount disc". What can I do to fix this? A friend told me it could be a hardware problem, perhaps a wire or something is out of place. What do you guys think?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My macbook air (OS x lion ) hard disk got crashed. now it starts with a grey screen and MAC OS X utilities. in the disk utility, the hard disk icon became inactive. when i erased the disk it became active again but i am still not able to partition it. it showed -- "Partition Error". "Couldn't unmount disk". now the disk icon became inactive again. when i click on mount it becomes active again but partioning is not done after many attempts.
another problem: - when it I click to proceed with the installation (still unpartitioned) it verifies my macbook's eligibility and says that the machine information is not with apple. below are the screenshots.
is there any internet issue, i got connected on my institute's wi-fi (excellent speed- 54mbps)

  • Cannot Unmount Internal HD

    Hi Guys,
I had a problem booting my computer up a while ago (it would just sit at the white apple screen with the loading wheel) so I removed the internal HDD and backed it up to my desktop computer using a USB adapter hub. I then completely erased the drive. I followed multiple forums on how to create a bootable USB flash drive with Lion, so I did so. I then booted up my computer while holding the Option key, and selected the flash drive (which had the OSX Lion Installer App on it from the mounted installESD.dmg file).
I'm now stuck yet again trying to reinstall Lion on my hard drive. I am in disk utility, and I cannot unmount my internal drive, which means I cannot reinstall lion to it. When I run the reinstaller it tells me that there was an error, and I need to reboot the app, which does nothing.
What i would really love to do is completely erase my internal hard drive (even though I thought it was already) and install Lion onto it from the bootable USB flash drive.
I have an '09 MacBook Pro. I've gone to SmallDog twice with my laptop and they told me that they cannot do anything or that I should do it myself to save money.
And help would be greatly appriciated. Thank you!!
    -Julien

There should be a simple explanation. Many background programs on your Mac, including Spotlight, access files on all formatted volumes connected to the computer; most of these programs are designed to allow an in-use volume to be unmounted without causing issue, but one notorious counterexample is the iTunesHelper background process. iTunesHelper coordinates iTunes' interactions with the rest of your computer, and may be using files on your iMac's hard disk, preventing you from unmounting the volume.
If iTunesHelper is running in the background, it's probably causing your issue, so you can just kill it (quit) from Activity Monitor. Search Spotlight for it, or open your /Applications/Utilities folder - you should see Activity Monitor near the top of the list. In the list of processes you see, find and select iTunesHelper and click the "Quit Process" button up top.
Now try running Drive Genius's Defrag again. It should be able to unmount your internal drive and run the repair normally. Just remember to leave your iMac alone while it's defragging! You don't want to accidentally interrupt the process.

  • Cannot play disc

    Hi,
I created a project in DVDSP. It builds find and says that formatting was successful. However, when I take it to the DVD player it says, "Cannot play disc." It's funny, b/c it plays on my computer DVD player.
During the build, the log said that it didn't include the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder - wondering if this is part of the problem. FYI, this is a copy of the log:
Warning: The file ‘AB_ROLLER.layout’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘HV000I01.BUP’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘HV000I01.IFO’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.

Warning: The file ‘HV001I01.IFO’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘HV001M01.EVO’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘HV001T01.EVO’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.

Warning: The file ‘VOB_DATA.LAY’ found in the VIDEO_TS or HVDVD_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Not sure if it's a simple setting that I'm missing, or what, but this has been bugging me all day.
I've taken the same quicktime and created it on idvd and it does just fine. what is it with DVDSP that i need to do special?
    thanks.

You'll find in the General in your Disc settings, in the Inspector Windows (if you click in any empty space of your Graphic View, you'll get you disc in the Inspector window).
In DVDSP Preferences, in Project settings, you can change the by default setting for new projects.

  • Cannot unmount volume

I was doing a maintenance on my system yesterday. I used DiskWarrior to do a rebuild on all the volumes. All was okay, except for my Mac HD 5 volume. I got this message when I tried to run DW 3.0.2 on this volume:
Repairing disk for “Mac HD 5”
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
    0 HFS volumes repaired
1 volume could not be repaired
Repairing disk failed with error Could not unmount disk (-10000)
When I used Disk Utility, verify disk volume, it said all was OK. But when I tried to verify permissions, it stopped about 1/4 of the way through. And then gave me a message "lost connection to volume, cannot unmount". Or to that effect.
I then tried TechTool Pro 4.1.1. I did a disk check, and all was okay. But when I tried to do a Volume check, I got this message from TTP:

There are a variety of invisible files, settings, and parameters that the Macintosh file system uses to locate files, free disk space, and for other maintenance and management routines. Damage to these critical data structures can result in lost or damaged files and may even necessitate a complete reformat of the volume.
    Completed
    Unable to unmount volume
TTP didn't actually complete a volume check. I hit start volume check. And it would just indicate it was complete, without actually every doing a full check.
Hopefully, there is a way of fixing this, without have to reformat the volume.
Also, I cannot startup from this volume. Tried, just got the grey Apple screen.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks dot. But I figured it out already. The problem was that the "automount volume folder" was deleted from the Mac HD 5 volume (have no idea how). These are invisible files, so I used Tinkertool to make them visible. That's how I realized that the automount file was missing. All the other volumes contained automount files for ALL the volumes (including for Mac HD 5). Except for Mac HD 5. This volume was missing it's own automount file. So I just copied the file over from one of the other volumes. And voila, Mac HD 5 is now bootable, and can be unmounted for volume maintenance.
Everything is working as it was.

The bottom line is that I cannot unmount the sparesbundle. Each time I try to unmount it, it does so and the system mounts the image again.
It even mounts itself on logon (even though it's not present in the login items).
The "/var/db/fv_secure_erase.jobs" file / directory indeed is not there.
Any ideas what might be wrong?

Unfortunately, I also have the same problem in Lion, at random.
Not having enough space on my MacBook Pro drive I have my iPhoto library in an encrypted sparsebundle on an external USB. After I have done work in iPhoto,
SOMETIMES, selecting the mounted sparseimage and the USB external drive containing and using Command-E to eject them together works fine and other times it leads to a stuck unmount.... Spotlight may also be part of the problem: Console shows:
