Users cannot connect to Open Directory Leopard server
Just testing Leopard server and running into all sorts of problems...
Clean install of Leopard Server running DNS, AFP and Open Directory.
Set up DNS first and checked both forward and reverse look-up was correct.
Promoted to Open Directory master from Standalone.
Created two test user accounts (without Home directories) and gave them access to a specific sharepoint.
Setup LDAP on the client machine (Leopard client) and could see the user accounts in the Directory app.
Try to log in.....'username or password incorrect'.
Check the OD logs and cannot find any reference to the attempted log-in.
I understand that it appears that user accounts require a Home Directory in Leopard, regardless of whether you actually want one (I don't). I tried creating a home directory using Workgroup Manager but as noted in other threads, the 'create home directory' button doesn't work.
I then created a home directory via the command line for one of the user accounts but am still unable to log-in.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
This may be a stupid question but have you run sudo chown on the user's home directory after creating it?
I had the same problem and my solution is posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1290158&tstart=0
Let me know if that works. If not, we'll work on it together.

Windows SMB users cannot connect to 10.5.4 server
Hi all,
Have a server running 10.5.4 bound to AD and running an OD to provide management of the Macs. Pretty standard setup and haven't had any problems elsewhere with the same deployment. However we're having a problem with XP users connecting to SMB shares. Mac users can connect over AFP or SMB fine, XP users are getting a "Network path could not be found" error. What's more the errors in the SMB log on the server aren't too descriptive. We're getting a few broken pipe errors, but no indication of what's causing that. XP machines don't appear to be getting to the authentication stage.
Server is an Xserve with a Promise RAID, shares are on a 4TB partition, bound to AD (OD not running Kerberos). SMB setup seems to be correctly aware of the AD.
Anyone any ideas?
ThanksIs your SMB a Standalone or Domain Member?
I have a similar problem and noticed that if I change SMB from "Domain Member" to Standalone Windows users can connect. Now every so often Leopard Server will change SMB back to a Domain Member (automatically).
I have the Server bound to AD. AFP works for the Macs no matter what. Mac Users authenticate to AD and mount the share. However if they try to use SMB, it fails for the Macs as well if SMB is a Domain Member.
I would like to stop Leopard from not reverting back or fix the "domain member" problem.
The fact that I can connect while it's a Standalone suggests, to me, that it's not a permissions problem. As well the failure carries to the Mac side means it's not a Windows issue. -
Cannot set up open directory, Mavericks server
I have a Mac mini with Mavericks and server running. I had a hard drive failure and once it was replaced decided to set the 2 internal drives as a mirror raid array.
I reinstalled the server app (clean install).
The email service runs, the webserver runs but I cannot seem to get the opendirectory service running again. I haven't tried any of the other services until I cna get the directory working again.
In the configuration log is below, I think the fundmental problem is in blue - but why? I haven't done anything to permissions (tried permissions repair as well)
any help gratefully received.

Hello,
I have an issue where users cannot connect to a server for files sharing over SMB.
Info:
All users on 10.10.1
2 Servers on 10.10.1
Server.app 4.0.3 but issue was also present using 4.0
SMB connection works when connecting to the OD Master
SMB does not work when connecting to the OD Replica ServerBut AFP works fine when connecting to the OD Replica Server.
I have destroyed and re-added the OD replica but that did not seem to help
This is what I see in the logs each time I try to connect(logs have been cleaned to remove client details:

I suspect the problem is to do with Kerberos and in relation to this server being an OD Replica.
I would really appreciate anyone's insight into this.
Thanks
MorgsI have the same problem although I upgraded from Lion Server to Mountain Lion Server. The error appears to go hand in hand with this error.
userInit: CFPreferences: user home directory for user kCFPreferencesCurrentUser at /Network/Servers/fullyqualifieddomainname/Users/user is unavailable. User domains will be volatile.
I've read a number of things to try. A lot of people point to DNS being a problem, but I'm confident this is correct in my environment. -
Sharing only users cannot connect to Lion Server
Dear all,
I stumbled across a funny problem, that I tried to resolve all day. I just wanted to add a sharing only user for my girlfriends new MacBook that she could use to connect to a shared Time Machine Volume.
If I add a new standard user, this user can connect to my server via finder (connect as...) and see the shared drives. If the same user tries to connect to the Time Machine Backup Volume via the settings dialog, it receives an error message (OSStatus-error 5).
If I add a sharing only user, this user cannot connect via finder or Time Machine (same error). The clients console states the following error message:
/System/Library/CoreServices/NetAuthAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/NetAuthAgent[2471] AFP error -5018 mapped to EIO
Does anybody have an Idea? That is my point. Yes, Apple still lets you add users via users and groups in system preferences but that is not how you should be adding users. I've seen nothing but trouble when that option is used to add users and I believe that the Lion server docs say to not use that. If you are using lion server why not use it the way it was meant to be. Just create a account in OD and only give her access to the Time Machine Service and none of the others.

Cannot connect to/open application to ITune. Messages states that it cannot open "because another user has it open. Ask them to quite and retry." However there is no other user??? Thanks for any help.
You Windows must have different user profile where iTunes is open in that profile. Switch windows user and close the iTunes, then return to your own user profile to open again.

VPN Connected Users cannot connect to the internet or send email
I just upgraded to Xserve G5 Dual 2.3 GHz 2GB SDRAM and a 3.5 TB Xserve RAID Running OSX Server 10.4.7.
Used to run G5 Tower running OSX Server 10.3.9.
Running as a Standalone Server.
Everything seems to be running smoothly other that the fact that users connecting through VPN can no longer connect to the internet while connected through VPN nor can they send email. (I assume it's the same issue).
Wondering if password type is the issue. In 10.3.9 Workgroup Manager User password types were Open Directory for my vpn users. Previous Server was Standalone Server with Open Directory running, but not setup (weird I know.) 10.4.7, Open Directory for password is not an option... only shadowed password.
Not running any Open Directory services other than Lookup Server: Running and NetInfo Server: Local Only.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
-EdUnless otherwise informed, a connecting client will send ALL traffic via the vpn. Ideally you only want to route traffic applicable to the VPN and for any other traffic (browsing and external email) to go via your local 'normal' router. You can configure the VPN server to inform connecting clients about applicable VPN traffic...
Example: the network you are vpn'ing into is 192.168.0.0/24
In Client Information-> Network Routing Definition, add 2 routes:
Address: 192.168.0.0
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Type: Private
Address: 0.0.0.0
Mask: 0.0.0.0
Type: Public
A connecting client will incorporate this routing information when connecting and thereafter send all traffic for the 192 network through the VPN (private) but send all other traffic (the catchall 0.0.0.0) to their local default router (public). Make sure you have them in that order (catchall at bottom).

iPodService 9.2.1.5 is currently running.Right, I'm going to try something, if this works, then this'll probably fix a lot of iTunes problems.
1: Make sure your whole iTunes database is backed up.
2: Uninstall iTunes, then run "Revo Uninstaller", this will remove ALL traces of iTunes from you computer, not your library.
I've found out that when un-installing or re-installing over a previous version of iTunes will carry over some problems from previous versions, or even create problems. Registry leftovers can be a problem also. Completely removing iTunes using "Revo Uninstaller" then re-installing will have the same effect as installing iTunes from a fresh OS install. Typically iTunes should be problem free when installed totally fresh.
3: Re-install the correct version of iTunes fresh and try again. -
Setup cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance
On a clean install domain member (Windows 2012), I am trying to setup System center 2012 VMM:
1. I installed the prerequisites as instructed during the pre-setup phase of the installation then rebooted the server (SQL Server 2012 was installed and services seem to be all started properly and SQL Configuration Manager starts as well).
2. After reboot, logged again with domain admin account and Windows update installed right away SP1 for SQL server 2012. Then I rebooted again.
3. Restarted the installation process and left default values. At the "Database configuration" step, I am leaving everything by default as well and I am getting error: "Setup cannot connect to the specified SQL Server instance. Ensure that
the server name..."
4. Tried different credentials, tried using port 1433 with no effect.
Am I missing something????
Thanks.
BenjilafouineDefinitely be sure to connect with the "ServerName\InstanceName,PortNumber". If you don't reference a port number it will try 1433 and then will connect via a dynamic port number. It is best in my opinion to always specify a specific port for each instance
to listen on in the SQL Server Configuration Manager so that you can open the fewest number of ports in the Windows firewall. -

Mavericks 10.9.5 cannot connect to windows share on server 2008r2 via SMB or CIFS
hey anyone,
on several macs at a client all running Mavericks 10.9.5. everything was working smooth.

it connects (with authentication). but the share wont open. and crashes the finder. everytime.
i can open other shares on the same server without any problems.
i've tried this on several machines all with a similar result.
all permissions on the server are correct as well as on all Macs.

I'm getting the same error messages when trying to connect over a VPN to a Mountain Lion server, from a Yosemite (10.10.2) iMac. The same Yosemite iMac at the same time has no trouble connecting to a Snow Leopard server on the same network.
By the way, there is no such thing as a "G5 (Intel) Mac". What you have is a Mac Pro tower. The G5 processors predated Intel. A lot of people tend to use "G5" as a generic term for a Mac aluminum tower. Why does it matter? Because if you not had not said "Intel", you would be getting replies having to do with the age of the computer in question. -
I cannot update my ipad2 to ios5. Updating through iTunes on pc Windows Vista, Error message reads "cannot connect to iPad Software Update Server. Tried resetting network settings, still not connecting. Tried updating iTunes, still not connecting.
Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

I cannot connect to my outgoing email server on my macBook pro, yet I can, for the same email account on my iPad. Also I can send emails from the other email account I have on my MacBook...really confused can anyone help?
Sometimes deleting the account and then re-creating it can solve this issue
Write down all the information in accounts before doing this
Highlight the account on the left and click the minus button
Then click the plus button to add the new account and follow the prompts -
have a iphone 4. i have downloaded the latest version of itunes to update the ios. I am having problems with the back up and sync and also the update. the update error message is coming up saying it cannot connect to the iphone update server. I am useing a windows 7 32 bit laptop. I have also reset my phone to factory settings. Would taking it to one of the stores and they would do it for me??
any help will be great thank youAll I can tell you is that I am having the exact same problem with an iPod Touch and that I was running iTunes 9.2.1.5 at the time it happened. Upgraded to 10.0.0.68 hoping that it might help, but no joy.
I don't want to do a restore just now since the Touch seems to be working fine. Restore will have to wait until I have plenty of free time in case something goes wrong. -
