Using Acrobat PDF Browser Control in Vista

Hi,
I've written a .NET 2.0 WinForms application that uses the PDF Reader ActiveX to display PDF files. Everything works well in Win XP and Win 2003 Server, but when I install it in Vista, my app crashes. I get no useful error message, only "[My app name] doesn't work anymore" (This is a translation of the message i get in the Dutch version of Vista).
I must add that I used .NET Framework 3.5 with the Vista installation where I used .NET 2.0 on XP. I did this because there is no explicit support for Vista mentioned on the Microsoft Download site. I doubt this would have any effect, because of the backward compatibility.
Someone suggested me that it could have something to do with permissions, but I tested all this with an administrator-account, so this is out of the question as well.
Now, I'm out of ideas... Anyone with suggestions?
Thx in advance!
Greeting
Kristof

Thanks for your reply Leonard,
Well there were 2 versions installed on the system. Version 5.x and 8.1.2. I uninstalled the first one so I'm sure he tries to use the newest one.
I must say that the software was developed using Acrobat 7, but if I'm not mistaken, the application uses the acrobat version that is available on the system it is running on, so that shouldn't matter...

  • How to use the 64 bit Adobe PDF Browser Control (AcroPDF64.dll) in x64 WinForms VS2012

    I noticed that sice 11.0.07 there is a 64 bit version of the AcroPDF.dll called AcroPDF64.dll. Does this mean that I can use the PDF Browser Control in a x64 WinForms application? If so, what do I need to do to get this to work?
    When I right click on the "Toolbox" and select "Choose Items..." there is only the possibility to select the Adobe PDF Reader pointing to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroPDF.dll" and not a version using the AcroPDF64.dll
    When I click in this dialog on the "Browse..." btton and select the AcroPDF64.dll nothing happens.
    Now I am stuck with an "Initializing..." message when loading a PDF in the control. The control is working when switching back to x86 (but which I can't because I need to reference a dll that is only available in 64 bit).
    Please advice, thank you in advance!

    Thank you for your reply.
    Does this means that it is still not possible to use the PDF ActiveX control in a x64 WinForms application?

  • Problem with Acrobat Reader Browser Control (LoadFile)

    Hi
    I am trying to use the Acrobat Reader Browser ActiveX Control to show a PDF file in a window from my application but I am finding a problem. It all works fine, unless I have the exact same PDF file open in Acrobat Reader at the same time. If I have the exact same PDF file open, the Browser Control appears to completely fail when I tell it to LoadFile. No errors are raised, but the control simply appears as a white rectangle with no controls at all. In fact, it is the same appearance that it has if you don't call LoadFile at all.
    I have Reader 9.3.4, I am using VB6, I have drawn an instance of the control at design time. I am only calling LoadFile, like this
    Private Sub Form_Load()
        AcroPDF1.LoadFile "c:\mypdf.pdf"
    End Sub
    I have read the OLE parts of the interapplication developer guide and the interapplication communication api reference and I can't see that I am doing anything wrong.
    Can anyone help? Is this perhaps a known problem in Reader?
    Thanks in advance
    Mark

    Hi everyone,
    I have found a workaround, inspired by another post about LoadFile problems. Rather than LoadFile I am now using the "src" property of the control. This works even when the PDF file is open in Acrobat Reader. My code is now
    Private Sub Form_Load()
        AcroPDF1.src = "c:\mypdf.pdf"
    End Sub
    I don't understand why this should work, but it does.
    Thanks
    Mark

  • Advice for using  Acrobat/PDF  to preserve 110-year-old book

    I am a volunteer on a project for our historical society. The only known copy of a rare book from the early 1890's was found containing valuable historical and genealogical data (10,000 names which we indexed) plus woodcut portrait images. It will be an extremely important and popular resource if we can get it into a universal format such as PDF. I really need EXPERT advice.
    The book itself is deteriorating, and literally crumbling. Each page was scanned (and can't be re-scanned due to its fragility) and the resulting tiff images were repaired to replace the missing pieces using the Paint program, a painstaking process taking hours per page. (About 200 kb each)
    We have been trying to combine the 256 full-page tiff images by pasting them into MSWord documents containing 20 of the page images each, and then making PDFs of each 20-page document.
    The tools we have available are: Acrobat 4.0 on my home computer and Acrobat Standard 6.0 on my work computer, Word 2003 and Word 2000, Paint, Microsoft Picture Editor and Microsoft Picture Manager.
    I want to be sure the many hundreds of hours of work that has gone into this so far will not be lost for the future. What can I do to ensure a file that can be read on-screen, can be printed for people asking for copies, and will be readable into the future? I see that 8.0 is now the standard. Am I risking that no one will be able to open these in the future using 4.0 or 6.0?
    The PDF documents made with the 4.0 Acrobat have the nicest, clearest print images while the 6.0 appear smeary in print but OK on screen. We have tried all types of different settings for Acrobat 6.0 yet the results have all been the same - nothing we do seems to change the appearance but the file size increases.
    Can someone who really knows the workings of these programs please give me some advice on what settings to use to optimize the results and preserve our work for the future? If you or someone you know can talk an amateur thru this, it would be a great service. Thanks in advance!

    > We have been trying to combine the 256 full-page tiff images by pasting

    > making PDFs of each 20-page document.
    Word might be introducing it's own compression into the workflow (blurring
    the image, data loss), and it does not store this type of data efficiently.
    Instead of using Word, I would recommend using Irfanview (freeware) to
    combine the 256 TIFF files into a single multi-page TIFF file
    (View/Multi-page images/Create Multi-page TIFF...). Use the LZW compression
    option (no data loss) in Irfanview when combining to keep the file size down
    (that's if there are any color or grayscale images, otherwise use CCITT Fax
    4 if they are all monochrome).
    You can then open and print the multi-page TIFF from Irfanview to Acrobat to
    get a complete PDF file. You can experiment with different compression
    settings when printing the TIFF to PDF. You can disable image compression
    and downsampling when creating the PDF to preserve image quality, but you
    will end up with a pretty large file (will people be downloading it from a
    web site?). If the images are grayscale or color then try JPEG medium
    compression with 200 dpi downsampling as a starting point and see how that
    looks. To save time when testing compression settings, just print one
    typical page from the project. Then you will know what settings to use when
    printing the entire 256 page file to PDF.
    Also the multi-page TIFF, like a single page one, would be a pretty good
    option as an archive format (and all the pages will be in order in a single
    file).

  • Firefox 6.01 doesn't open ACROBAT PDF, when Chrome does

    When I click to open a PDF Acrobat 10.1.0 spanish doc, it appears a bar in the centre but the PDF never aprears.
    Then I copy/paste the URL in a Chrome and it comes up immediately

    Hi JeffLazar,
    There are a couple of solutions. The first is to revert to using Chrome’s own PDF viewer by reversing your earlier actions (so type about:plug-ins into the address bar then click the disable link next to the Adobe Reader/Acrobat link).
    This would stop the constant nagging to update because the PDF viewer would be updated with Chrome (which anyway happens automatically, without the user’s input or knowledge). However, it would also mean putting up with the Chrome PDF viewer quirk that bothered you in the first place.
    The second option is to force Chrome to ignore, and therefore run, outdated plug-ins. This is an all-or-nothing approach, though, that isn’t recommended by Google – or even by Adobe – because it could leave your browser at risk from some as-yet-undiscovered security hole (updates to plug-ins are often made to fix such flaws).
    But if you’re determined to keep using Chrome and want to keep using Adobe’s PDF viewer without the update annoyances then using the --allow-outdated-plugins command-line parameter when launching the Chrome executable file will do this (it begins with two hyphens).
    If you launch Chrome from the Start menu, for example, then click Start then point to All Programs followed by Google Chrome and then right-click the Google Chrome and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
    Now append the --allow-outdated-plug-ins to the end of the Target line (so it’ll look something like: C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --allow-outdated-plug-ins) and click OK. Restart Chrome and it will no longer check for deprecated plug-ins.

  • Disable Mouse Right click inside Adobe Acrobat PDF plugin

    Hi All,
    We are rendering Adobe live cycle pdf file inside html object tag.
    I have disabled toolbar , navigation bar using navpanes=0&toolbar=0.
    But when mouse right click reenable the context menu again.
    So Is there any way to disable mouse righ click inside Adobe Acrobat PDF browser plugin?

    I had the same problem after updating Firefox to version 4.0 and Acrobat Reader to Version X. For me (Win XP) what solve the problem was deleting the Acrobat Reader Plugin (nppdf32.dll) in the Firefox plugin folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins). So now there is only one Acrobat Reader Plugin left namely the one in the Acrobat Reader plugin folder (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\Browser).

  • Where can I find CODE & DOCS for Acrobat PDF Library SDK?

    Hi,
    I had used Acrobat PDF SDK in the past but it didnt serve the purpose and we had to abort plan. THis time we are using PDF LIBRARY SDK instead. When can i find the code and documentation for it?
    The only page I see is http://www.adobe.com/devnet/pdf/library/
    So I want to study the object models, objects, functions etc, cant find it. Also is there a book you can suggest to study it. I sort of know the PDF-SDK wel, is the PDF-LIBRARY-SDK almost the same ?
    Pls direct me to the code and documentation, so I can start coding on it.

    >WHy dont you have non confusing names for the products, one is the free Acrobat PDF SDK
    No, it's the Acrobat SDK. This doesn't seem confusing at all: it's an
    SDK for automating/controlling Acrobat, just as the Windows SDK is a
    tool for working with Windows, the Photoshop SDK is a tool for working
    with Photoshop etc. "Free" isn't used in the title, because that would
    be confusing, and might suggest it can be deployed with the free Adobe
    Reader.
    Nevertheless, maybe something could improve it because there are a
    huge number of developer who assume it will work with the Reader or
    without Acrobat, despite its name.
    >and the other is Acrobat PDF LIBRARY SDK, right?
    The other is the Adobe PDF Library. It's a library from Adobe for
    working with PDF. Acrobat is not part of the name. It would be
    confusing if it were. Maybe it could be called the "non-Acrobat PDF
    Library".

  • Using Adobe Reader ActiveX control in Access 2010

    I have an access 2010 database containing records that have individual associated pdfs.  I have embedded a Adobe Acrobat PDF reader control in a form and created a function to load the appropriate pdf using the .LoadFile method so that it is visible on the same form as the database record.  When I move to a new record I want to close the file and clear the control (as though I had just opened the form) but I can't find the method to close/unload the file.  How can I do this please?
    Addition - I  have included some additional references to the Access DB so intellisense identified the methods for the Active X control (acroPDF).  There is no 'unload' or 'close' method though that I can see, unless there are options to the ExecCommand method that I can use??
    All help gratefully received.  Thanks.  Dave

    I don't know if this is the best way or if it works in Access 2010, but it worked for me in the 2003 version. I set the enabled property to false and back to true. Here's the code that also checks for a null in the JobOrderNumber field:
    On Error GoTo ErrorHandler
    JOstr = Me.JobOrderNumber
    On Error GoTo 0
    On Error Resume Next
    ErrorHandler:
    Me.AcroPDF0test.Enabled = False
    Me.AcroPDF0test.Enabled = True
    End Sub

  • RegisterHotKey(....) to disable hotkeys such as ALT+F4 is not working in C# Web Browser control

    Disabling hot keys like "ALT+F4" using register RegisterHotKey(..) function and wndproc(..) function in c# windows application is not working as expected in few cases. Below is the description.
    I am using C# Web Browser control in windows application to display Web Pages. We are disabling hot keys like ALT+F4 by calling the method RegisterHotKey(..) and capture the hot key message in Wndproc(..) function. Initially This is working as expected
    normally.
    But as part of new requirement, we need to set the "title of Web browser page" to its parent class(Win form) text property. when we are assigning text property of winform using below code, the hot keys could not be disabled.
    this.Text = webBrowserCustom.DocumentTitle; //this keyword refers to WinForm which loads web browser control
    If webBrowserCustom.DocumentTitle is empty then this.text is set to Empty string. In such case the hot keys are not getting disabled.
    I am not sure what is the relation between text property of winform and hot keys disabling.
    Could you please let us know why hot keys are not getting disabled when we setting empty string to Winform(which is loading Web Browser control) text property.?

    Hi,
    How did you use RegisterHotKey and winproc function in your project, could you please post the code here so that we can reproduce the problem firstly?
    If you just want to prevent the user from closing the form, you could register Form_Closing event handler, and cancel the closing behavior by the user.
    private void Form1_FormClosing(object sender, FormClosingEventArgs e)
    e.Cancel = (e.CloseReason == CloseReason.UserClosing);
    private void btnCloseForm_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
    this.FormClosing -= new System.Windows.Forms.FormClosingEventHandler(this.Form1_FormClosing);
    this.Close();

  • Acrobat pdf 9.0 has stopped working

    Hi
    I recently upgraded to CS4 and Quark 8.
    Yesterday my Q8 files were happily printing out using Acrobat pdf 9 (and had resolved an irritation in 8 where no files including the character '/' would print).
    Today every file I try to print gets stopped in the printer queue and can't be restarted.

    Any suggestions?

    Follow Torben Directions to see if you can create a PDF, first
    But you don't Just have an Acrobat Problem.
    Do the following:
    Go to Printer Utility and remove any and all versions of Adobe PDF, from list. Quit Printer Utility
    Now open your newest version of Acrobat you have installed (all older versions will work with the newest PDF Print Driver, but not the reverse.
    Now open Acrobat ang to help menu and choose Repair and Replace. when open uncheck everything except Adobe PDF.
    once repaired go back to Printer Utility and verify adobe PDF has been added. Quit printer Utility
    Now try creating a PDF.
    As for Word if you have 2008 (don't uninstall Word2004), It has its own PDF Converter now.  Go to Save As... and choose PDF from list .
    BTW: Word 2008 is now up to 12.2.1 version and Word 2004 is now up to 11.5.9

  • Adobe Acrobat PDF erstellen aus Datei = keine Leserechte

    Hallo,
Also eventuell eine Einstellung in Word...

    "Acrobat tells me (Win7 + Office 2010) and a colleague (Win XP + Office 2010 per) (Open Acrobat and then create a PDF from a file), most recently when creating the error that I have no read permission to open the file. Whether the file (or other Word files) local or network, is already reinstalled Acrobat and performed the latest update.
    The normal build goes directly from Word.
    Google does not help.
    Update: it does not seem to work only in Word, Excel files goes with it. So possibly a setting in Word ..."
    If you are using Acrobat PDF Maker, you have to have at least AAX to work with OFFICE 2010. Be sure to update AA to 10.1.4, the latest version. If you are trying to create the file directly in AAX from a word file or such, then PDF Maker must be working properly in OFFICE or it will not create a PDF. Try opening WORD (or other) and print to the Adobe PDF printer. Does that create the PDF. If you get the permissions error, then it is likely that the settings files are not in a folder accessible to your account. You can copy them over to your account or add permissions to the folder where they are located.
    Hopefully that helps. I think I got the gist of the problem after using Google Translate.

  • Acrobat 9 trial PDF Active X browser control seems to be missing

    Hi, I've downloaded Acrobat 9 SDK and the trial version of Acrobat 9.
    I can see the AcroPDF and all the interfaces / classes the doc is refering to but not the reader 9 viewer compliant Active X. It's neither in the toolbox of Visual Studio nor in the component list and I've serached for .ocx in the whole adobe directory unsuccessfully.
    Is it just not part of the trial version ?
    Alternatively, I diplay the viewer this way but I'd like to evaluate the Acrobat Reader option.
    CAcroApp caa = new AcroAppClass();
    caa.Show();
    By the way, how can I assign my form to hold (be the parent of) this AcroAppClass ?
    Thanks
    Frederic

    I mean the ActiveX, obviously I don't know its file name since I can't find it...
    Here is what the sample comment says (in the code):
    This is a simple C# sample demonstrating how to use PDF ActiveX control
    in a C# application. To do that, you need first add it to your project's
    references by selecting "Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Browswer Control Type Library 1.0"
    from "Project - Add References... - COM". In order to be able to drag-drop
    the ActiveX control to a window in your application, you need add the Acrobat
    ActiveX control to the "Toolbox" by selecting "Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Browser
    Control" from "Tools - Add/Remove Toolbox Items... - COM".
    Pb: Adobe Acrobat Browser Control is not part of the list.
    Also, samples didn't show how to create the viewer control into a parent window, it opens in a separate free window

    Hi Rodney
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    This sounds like one of those "oddities", contributed to by a few sources.
    I can clear the Safari cache files as a temporary solution, but I encounter the same difficulties with the “problematic” files once they have been opened again.
    Wondering if you disabled the Safari Cache would the refresh function work correctly? As a test you can disable the Safari Cache by Emptying the Cache first via the Safari menu, then Quit Safari. Now go to the Finder>Your User Library>Caches>Safari. Single click on the Safari folder, then Apple Key + I to open Info panel. There, check the "locked" box. This prevents further additions to the cache. The downside, you lose your ability to upload images etc. within Safari (my cache is disabled, so I use Firefox for the uploads).
    Then restart Safari. Try the PDF from within Safari.
