Using Actionscript to create complete scenes

Ok let me paint a picture. I'm designing an online flash
application that will dynamically display tutorials stored in a
MySQL database. These tutorials will be added via a php control
panel for tutors to add new tutorials to the database.
So my flash will load, dynamically create a new scene, add in
some static elements i.e. logo and some other images and then list
the tutorials for the user to select.
The user then selects a tutorial and a new scene is
dynamically created to display the contents of this scene i.e. a
scrollPane for the text, video component for the video elements and
the title etc.
I recently read this tutorial so getting the data from the
database into Flash shouldn't be a major problem.
http://www.webmonkey.com/webmonkey/03/40/index1a.html
Here's what I think I need
I'm about to start digging through my flash bible so I'll
edit this and let you know what I've found out myself,
1. How to create a new scene using Actionscript,
2. How to add a few images (jpgs) from the library using
Actionscript,
3. how to add a scrollPane (all using actionscript),
4. how to add some text fields,
5. how to add a video player to access a video from a folder
on the server and lastly
6. some kind of back button..
Majority of these components will be loading content from PHP
which will access my MySQL server.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

A tall order for a single thread! There are many possible
answers to each question. Plus there are not enough specifics to
guide you to the correct alternative. The good news it you can do
what you are planning.
1. How to create a new scene using Actionscript,
Do not be confused with the technical feature of a scene in
Flash IDE. It is not something you use in Actionscript. However
from a design view, you can create any page oriented content
application you want. The usually dynamic element for creating a
page is a MovieClip or the as you mentioned the component
ScrollPane which is MovieClip.
Beyond that there are many many ways to go.
In general you would create one or more template layouts and
load the content in selecting the template.
A shell Flash movie would handle the loading of the templates
and the data or content that would show.
As well there could be swf that are custom pages that simply
load and handle all the needed content separately.
2. How to add a few images (jpgs) from the library using
Actionscript,
MovieClip.attachMovie
You also can load externally using
MovieClip.loadMovie
or if you need to manipulate it after loading then
MovieClipLoad.onLoadInit
3. how to add a scrollPane (all using actionscript),
Explained at
ScrollPane.contentPath">MovieClipLoad.onLoadInit
4. how to add some text fields,
The question implies to create the TextField dynamically and
a central method is:
MovieClip.createTextField
5. how to add a video player to access a video from a folder
on the server and lastly
Use the FLVPlayback component that is delivered with Flash 8
Pro. You need to encode the video as FLV format using the video
encoder that comes with Flash 8 (also possible with import except
you elected to make it external) or a third party encoder.
You put the flv files on the server with the swf containing
the FLVPlayer and use the
FLVPlayback.contentPath
method.
6. some kind of back button..
Again many many ways to go: You can use the Flash component
button or create your own. You can make a button from a MovieClip.
You can do these dynamically or at design time and in either case
change their functionality and respond to their interactions at
runtime.

  • Using a function in multiple scenes

    I have a .fla project being created under CS4, using
    ActionScript 3.0, that consists of multiple scenes.
    In the code attached to the first scene, I define some
    functions that are used as methods on buttons:
    function MouseDown(TheKey:Object):void
    TheKey.alpha=0.6;
    function MouseUp(TheKey:Object):void
    TheKey.alpha=1.0;
    function AlphaPoint6(event:MouseEvent):void
    MouseDown(event.currentTarget);
    function AlphaonepointO(event:MouseEvent):void
    MouseUp(event.currentTarget);
    And I use a couple of the functions as EventListener methods
    on buttons
    Key1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN,AlphaPoint6);
    Key1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP,AlphaonepointO);
    So far so good.
    Then, I create a second scene in which I have some other
    buttons.
    When I try using the same functions as eventlisteners on
    these buttons, in the code for the second scene:
    Key11.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN,AlphaPoint6);
    Key11.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP,AlphaonepointO);
    then, I get the error messages
    1120: Access of undefined property AlphaPoint6
    1120: Access of undefined property AlphaonepointO
    BUT, if I try declaring these functions again with the script
    of the second scene, I get the error message
    1021 Duplicate Function definition
    So, I seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. On
    the one hand, when the compiler parses the second scene, it
    believes those functions are defined (as it is not happy if you try
    defining them again). On the other hand, the compiler does not
    think they are defined. as it considers them to be undefined
    properties.
    Does anyone have an idea about how to resolve this conumdrum?

    One option is to not use scenes. Just take what you have as
    scenes and either place them in the one timeline, or convert them
    into movielcips. In my own design work, I have never used scenes.
    When I first encopuntered them via someone else's design, I
    immediately disliked them because it meant I had to search thru
    inobvious places to find things that needed to be revised. Other
    folks that help in these forums have their own reasons for
    promoting not using scenes... troublesome, unreliable, outdated,
    etc

    Hi Sir, How r u? Hope to be fine. Sir, I have a problem that i want to fetch data in fxml comboBox created in Scene Builder?
    I have used this code in JavaFx 2.0 for comboBox and textField the code is
    ComboBox studentRegId = new ComboBox();

    Please Help Me!
    I shall be very grate full to you for this kindness.

    Hi,
    Ok, so you create your FXML :
    Add a controller property to your root control. (See Code tab in SceneBuilder or direcly in FXML : fx:controller tag)
    Add a fx:id to your controls (your combobox) (First property in SceneBuilder or directly in FXML : fx:id)
    Example :
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <?import java.lang.*?>
    <?import java.util.*?>
    <?import javafx.collections.*?>
    <?import javafx.scene.control.*?>
    <?import javafx.scene.layout.*?>
    <?import javafx.scene.paint.*?>
    <HBox prefHeight="-1.0" prefWidth="-1.0" xmlns:fx="http://javafx.com/fxml" fx:controller="org.lgringo.comboexample.Controler">
      <children>
        <TextField fx:id="text" prefWidth="100.0" />
        <ComboBox fx:id="combo" prefWidth="200.0">
          <items>
            <FXCollections fx:factory="observableArrayList">
              <String fx:value="Item 1" />
              <String fx:value="Item 2" />
              <String fx:value="Item 3" />
            </FXCollections>
          </items>
        </ComboBox>
      </children>
    </HBox>Then, you create your Controler class using @FXML annotation (name of control should be the name of fx:id properties)
    You can do some initialisation in the inherit method "initialize"
    Example :
    package org.lgringo.comboexample;
    import javafx.fxml.FXML;
    import javafx.scene.control.ComboBox;
    import javafx.scene.control.TextField;
    public class Controler {
         @FXML
         // fx:id="combo"
         private ComboBox<String> combo; // Value injected by FXMLLoader
         @FXML
         // fx:id="text"
         private TextField text; // Value injected by FXMLLoader
         @FXML // This method is called by the FXMLLoader when initialization is complete
        void initialize() {
            assert combo != null : "fx:id=\"combo\" was not injected: check your FXML file 'ComboboxExample.fxml'.";
            assert text != null : "fx:id=\"text\" was not injected: check your FXML file 'ComboboxExample.fxml'.";
            // Initialize your logic here: all @FXML variables will have been injected
            combo.getItems().clear();
            combo.getItems().addAll("John Lennon","Mick Jagger","David Bowie");
            combo.getItems().add("Others...");
            text.setText("List : ");
    }Then you use the FXMLLoader class to load your FXML and Controler.
    Example :
    package org.lgringo.comboexample;
    import javafx.application.Application;
    import javafx.fxml.FXMLLoader;
    import javafx.scene.Parent;
    import javafx.scene.Scene;
    import javafx.stage.Stage;
    public class App extends Application {
          * @param args
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              App.launch(args);
         @Override
         public void start(Stage primaryStage) throws Exception {
              Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource("ComboboxExample.fxml"));
              primaryStage.setTitle("Combo Example");
              primaryStage.setScene(new Scene(root, 300, 275));
              primaryStage.show();
    }More info : http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/get_started/fxml_tutorial.htm

  • A method to create completely customized photo book page templates from scratch in Lightroom 5

    I was able to successfully create completely customized Lightroom 5 page templates (including altering the number of, positions, and sizes of pictures) by making edits to the templatePages.lua file(s) in the Lightroom directory tree.  I have never heard of the LUA file format before, but it is ASCII and looks somewhat like XML, so it was fairly easy to decipher.  Here is a high-level description of how I did it.  This applies to Lightroom 5 on Windows 7.  If this doesn't make any sense to you, then don't try it - you're likely in over your head.  Although my description is brief and lacking in detail, it should enable someone who is capable of handling this to figure it out with a little of careful trial and error.  Do this at your own risk - if you screw-up your installation, catalog, or computer, it's your own fault.  It all worked great for me.
    First, open the "<lightroom 5 install directory>\Templates\Layout Templates" folder.  Then navigate to the template set that contains the template you would like to use as a starting point for the new template.  For example, "12x12-blurb\clean12x12".  Make a back-up copy of the templatePages.lua file in case you mess something up and want to revert.
    There will be a bunch of .jpg files in this directory that each contain a preview image of the layout that carries the same name as the .jpg file.  Find the one that you would like to use as a starting point.  Take note of the name of the file, which is probably something similar to "page_26_preview.jpg".   Duplicate the file and rename it to something unique, such as "dummy_preview.jpg".  It's just temporary, so it doesn't matter what name you pick, provided it is a legal file name with no spaces.
    Next, open the templatePages.lua file in a text editor.  I suggest using one that can automatically recognize and format ULA (such as Notepad++, which is open source and free to use).  Then search the file for the unique portion of the file name you took note of earlier, such as "page_26".  It will point you to a section in the LUA file that describes that particular template.  Carefully copy that entire section, including a balanced number of brackets (starting with the two brackets and commas before "children" and ending with the one bracket and comma after the "title" line.  Paste the copied text into the end of the file on a new line immediately following the bracket and comma after the "title" field for the last page template section (right near the end of the file).  Change the "previewName" field to the name of the preview file copy that you created ("dummy_preview.jpg" for me) and the "name" field to the name of the new template you're creating ("dummy" for me, since it is just temporary).  Next change at least one of the hex characters in the "pageID" field such that the new template will have a unique page identifier.
    Now you can make edits to the photo and text fields included in the new section, using other templates in the template file as examples.  "x" and "y" fields are coordinates (in pixels) for the bottom-left corner of the picture or text field, "height" and "width" are the width of the field in pixels.  The fields should be mostly self-explanatory, but make sure that the "photoindex" fields are filled-in starting from 1 to N, where N is the number of pictures in the template, with no duplicates or gaps.  They do not need to be in order.  Treat the "textIndex" fields similarly for text fields.  If you want to add an additional picture or text field, simply copy the section describing a picture or text field from another template and paste it, carefully, into the new template that you are creating.
    Once you are done, save the file (you may get interference from Windows UAC, in which case save the file elsewhere and the move it back to the correct directory).  Then open Lightroom.  Create a new photobook, and choose the new template for one of the pages, remembering that the preview image will look like the JPG that you copied.  Voila!  If you didn't screw anything up, you should see a page based on your new template.  Then right-click the page and select "Save as custom page", which will cause a fresh preview file to be created for your new template and your template to be copied to the "custom pages" section of the template menu.  The new section you added to the "templatePages.lua" and the "dummy" preview file can now be deleted, since they are no longer needed.  I save them so that I may simply overwrite them the next time I need to create a customized template.
    Enjoy, and please share any clarifications, corrections, or enhancements to my process.

    This post was great!  Thank you so much.  But I am hoping you know one more thing related to this.  In the "transform" section of the definition (where the x/y coordinates are set along with height and width) there is an option called "angle".  I was hoping that changing this value would allow me to offset the angle of the picture.  However, if I put any value there other than 0 the template becomes unusable.
    Do you happen to know what this option does?
    I haven't looked into the files, so this is just a guess based on how some graphic applications work. It's common to think of rotating a shape as pivoting around a center point, but It's possible that the file sets a value for the rotation point not at the center. In some graphics applications, you can set a shape's pivot at any corner or in the middle of any side, of the rectangle that contains the whole shape.
    So, your value may be rotating the shape around a pivot that moves the shape into some area that upsets the behavior of other shapes. Just a thought.

    Peter's point is a good one.  I would also assume that the "angle" property allows you to rotate an image, but I haven't tried it myself.  One thing to investigate - are there any page templates included in LR that have image placeholders that are at an angle (I don't recall any, off-hand)?  If so, looking at the associated .lua file could provide insight into how an angled image placeholder should be described.

  • What is the advantage of using IB to create XIBs/Class Objects over coding?

    Hi all,
    I hoping someone can provide me some pros and cons as to when I should use IB to create XIBs and/or class objects as opposed to directly coding them.
    For example, if I choose Apple's Template for creating a Navigation Based Application (cocoa touch), the project creates two NIB files - MainMenu and RootViewController.
    However looking at one of demo apps SimpleDrillDown, it does not have a RootViewController XIB and instead creates it via code.
    Another example from the same two apps is that the template generates a "Navigation Controller" class object in the Mainmenu.xib. SimpleDrillDown does not bother with this in the XIB, but uses code to generate the controller:
    - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application {
    // Create the navigation and view controllers
    RootViewController *rootViewController = [[RootViewController alloc] init];
    UINavigationController *aNavigationController = [[UINavigationController alloc] initWithRootViewController:rootViewController];
    self.navigationController = aNavigationController;
    [aNavigationController release];
    [rootViewController release];
    // Configure and show the window
    [window addSubview:[navigationController view]];
    [window makeKeyAndVisible];
    as opposed to the template which only needs this:
    - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application {
    // Configure and show the window
    // Navigation Controller is defined in MainWindow.xib
    [window addSubview:[navigationController view]];
    [window makeKeyAndVisible];
    So what are the advantages of each approach. Why does apple suggest one approach and yet all its demos use another.
    Any thoughts, answers gratefully received.
    TIA, Michael.

    You can do whatever you're comfortable with, but most of the best Cocoa programmers--the ones on the Mac, I mean--recommend putting everything you can into Interface Builder.
    It's a little like the difference between writing a program to do a bunch of financial calculations and using a spreadsheet. Yeah, the program can do everything the spreadsheet can--and more besides--but you'll find it far easier to create, use and modify the spreadsheet.
    Interface Builder takes away a lot of completely meaningless choices ("What order should I create the objects in? How should I name the variables? How should I create their frames? What order should I set the attributes in?"), leaving you with an interface optimized for creating and arranging objects, and allowing your code to focus on what you really do need to think about--your application's logic.
    (By the way--part of the reason Apple's demos don't all use Interface Builder is that the very first SDK releases didn't have it. Back then, you had to create all your views programatically. Believe me, I have no wish to go back to setting autoresize masks manually. Now get off my lawn, whippersnapper.)

  • DYNAMIC CREATION OF LINE SERIES USING ACTIONSCRIPT

    There's something wierd about flex or im doing something
    wrong?
    - when i create a line series manually using mxml and specify
    a id for the series, it works.
    - similarly when i try to dynamically create a line series
    using actionscript & define an "id" property, flex does not
    understand! what am i doing wrong?
    code for reference:
    private function addSeries(series:Array,
    yField:String,id:String) // addseries(series,"date","1000")
    var ls:LineSeries= new LineSeries();
    var stroke:Stroke = new Stroke()
    ls.yField = yField;
    ls.xField="ts"
    ls.dataProvider=dp
    ls.id=id // tried defining it dynamically, but flex does not
    find
    this.mychart.series.push(ls)
    THIS IS THE ERROR I GET : "TypeError: Error #1010: A term is
    undefined and has no properties."

    I see... I played around with the line chart ...
    Hopefully this helps... if not forgive me...
    I know why you are trying to use the id property which i
    agree doesn't work.
    since the series is an array in your lineChart use the index
    to set the visible property false/true.
    lineChart.series[0].visible = true/false;
    <mx:Lineseries id="a1" visible="true"
    dataProvider="{whatever}" />
    <mx:Lineseries id="a2" visible="false"
    dataProvider="{whatever}"/>
    create a function called init();
    public function init():void
    var lineS1:LineSeries = new LineSeries();
    lineS1.visible = true/false;
    lineChart.series.push(lineS1);
    var lineS2:LineSeries = new LineSeries();
    lineS2.visible = true/false;
    lineChart.series.push(lineS2);
    ... and the key is to call this init function on initialize
    event...NOT on createComplete event
    <mx:LineChart.... initialize="init()" .... />
    and to show both lines... call this function...
    public function showLines():void
    lineChart.series[0].visible = true;

    For the last 5 years (and in IPCC3.x/4.x,UCCX/5.x/7.x) I've used the same basic subflow to read a XML document that contains holiday dates where the queue should be closed.  I've re-used this script on 20+ client installs and it's always worked.  The structure of the script allows you to pass the path and filename of the XML document as parameters to the subflow. (The document is in the repository)
    I loaded this script in UCCX 8.0.2 recently and it crashed with a Java.IO error.  It looked like it was trying to read the file system directly and not the repository. (In the Linux appliance model this kind of makes sense but why is the step trying to read the file system directly?)
    So I open a TAC case (SR# 615243125) and TAC tells me that the method of using the Create File Document step is not supported anymore and that I should specify the filename directly in the Create XML Document step
    The problem that I see (aside from having to edit all my scripts that use XML files) is that the Create XML Document step is looking for the input to be a type DOCUMENT and not a type STRING.  This seems to imply that I have to hardcode the document in each script that I deploy for a customer.  When it was a string it was easy to construct the full file path from parameters and pass to the subflow.
    Questions to the group
    #1 Am I missing something here?
    #2  Do you assume that you'll be able to load a script that worked fine in UCCX 7 into UCCX 8 and that it should completely function when you're doing everything according to the step reference documentation.
    #3 Cisco didn’t document this in any way that I can find.
    #4 How can you use the Create XML Document step in a fashion that would let you construct the path of the file and the filename previously in the script so you could pass it to a subflow ?  It would seem this functionality has been killed in UCCX 8

    The create XML document input can only be a type DOCUMENT

    #1 Am I missing something here?
    You are mixing two different issues together here.
    The Create File Document step is indeed not needed or supported for creating an XML document. That is why there is a unique step; to trigger XML parsing within the MIVR subsystem.
    Accessing the file system is restricted to a single folder within the VOS model (i.e. 8.0+). This folder is not backed up, replicated, or cleaned up automatically. It was intended to give developers some FS access as a temporary swap location only.
    #2  Do you assume that you'll be able to load a script that
    worked fine in UCCX 7 into UCCX 8 and that it should completely
    function when you're doing everything according to the step reference
    documentation.
    Assume nothing; read the documentation and attend one of the dozens of partner training sessions that CCBU put on advising of the upcoming changes.
    #3 Cisco didn’t document this in any way that I can find.
    You're right, I guess, on the Create File vs. XML Document step. AFAIK Cisco never wrote a notice into the Step Reference Guide explicitly stating that you cannot use the Create File Document although the documentation seemed pretty clear to me without it. File system restrictions are documented in the 8.0 release notes.
    Scripting and Development Series: Volume 2, Editor Step ReferenceUse the Create XML Document step to create a logical document that maps a document to another document variable (where the document has already been pre-parsed as an XML document and is ready to be accessed by the Get XML Document Data step).Use this step before the Get XML Document Data step to obtain data from a document formatted using the Extensible Markup Language (XML).
    #4 How can you use the Create XML Document step in a fashion that would
    let you construct the path of the file and the filename previously in
    the script so you could pass it to a subflow ?  It would seem this functionality has been killed in UCCX 8
    No it hasn't; just concatinate a string to build the Source Document parameter the step needs. Example:  "DOC[" + myFilePath + "]"

  • How can I turn off auto play of an swf/flv using actionscript?

    Does anyone know how to turn off autoplay, using actionscript, of swf/flv?
    I'm trying to showcase four videos on the same page of a website. each video is a generic media player created in flash. when i test the movie, all the videos start playing at once.
    Also, if possible is there a way to have all four videos in the same media player?

    the media player has an autoPlay property.
    and yes, it also has a contentPath property.

  • How to get/set value in illustrator preference file using ActionScript 3.0

    Hi all,
    I want to get/set the flex panel components preference in illustrator preference file using ActionScript 3.0.
    I tried to achieve this  like --
    import com.adobe.illustrator.Preferences;
    var pref : Prefereneces = new Preferences();
    //To set value I used  this...
    pref.setStringPreference("url", id1.text);
    //To get value I used this..
    id1.text = pref.getStringPreference("url");
    i think there is prb in creating  Preference variable but I am unable to resolve.
    plz help.
    Thanks.

    I am having trouble with setStringPreference. It seems to be setting the value to 0 in the Prefs file. When I first wrote the code, it was working, but something is keeping it from saving the right value now. Did you get yours working? Any ideas?

  • Using XML to create files through API

    Hi.
    I created a new custom type - a subclass of "Document", with a few private attributes.
    I wrote a small XML file that creates an instance of that type.
    I have no problem using that XML with FTP or with the web interface - it parses the XML automatically and creates my custom file.
    However, when I try to use the java API to do the same, it just copies the XML file into IFS, but doesn't parse it or creates the custom file that is defined in it.
    I am using the IFSFileSystem.createDocument method, with parsing set to true, and "null" for the callback parameter.
    Of course, the XML parser is registered (as I said, it works with FTP and web interface).
    Please help.
    Thanks, Edo.

    Sure .. you can use XML as the data source. If you have DW8,
    you can even
    do it right in the Dreamweaver Interface.

  • Using RoboHelp to create online tutorials?

    Our company currently uses RoboHelp to create our Help
    Systems. As a training developer, who has used a course authoring
    software package for the past five years, I was wondering if
    RoboHelp would be a good environment to develop training tutorials.
    I love the fact that you can search and index the help systems and
    thought the potential may be there to search for information within
    tutorials as well.
    I know Captivate is the software simulation product, however
    a lot of our training material is either mainly text, or numerous
    screen shots showing an individual how to use an application.
    As I am new to RoboHelp, does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks in advance.

    Like Colum, welcome to the Forums!
    (The following assumes the WebHelp Pro scenario you outlined)
    >>>1. How do I set the window to have the right
    frame display initially, without the left index frame? I want to
    leave the index frame so that the user can access it if neccesary.
    1. Make sure WebHelp Pro is your primary layout.
    2. Create a new Window, call it OnePane and select the
    tickbox in Window properties for One Pane and click OK. (This means
    the Navigation pane (Contents, Index, Search, etc.) are hidden when
    first launched.
    3. Bring up the WebHelp Pro single source layout wizard.
    4. Tick the box: Show navigation pane link in topics (this is
    what allows the user to opt to see the Index and navigation pane if
    they want.
    5. Be sure to select "OnePane" as your default window you
    just created and complete the wizard to publish.
    6. Caveat: There is a shortcoming when you view locally from
    the authoring machine. You will not be able to see the effects of
    your changes. These can only viewed in a web browser pointed to
    your actual WebHelp Pro site.
    7. Publish to the RoboEngine server to view all the changes
    you made and notice the "Show" link that allows the user to reveal
    the navigation pane.
    >>>2. Our Help System is in HTML, but I am thinking
    of using WebHelp Pro (from a dedicated server). When I View Primary
    Layout, the index frame and button at the top of the form do not
    display. I get the yellow box located just below the Internet
    Explorer toolbar saying 'To help protect your security, Internet
    Explorer has resticted this file from showing active content that
    could access your computer. Click here to for options....'. That
    could be a real pain for 1200 users. Is there a way to if off for
    RoboHelp WebHelp Pro?
    I believe you may be encountering something that is only seen
    by you because you're viewing it locally. When published, the user
    would not see this. To remove this annoying message, go to Internet
    Options > Advanced > scroll down to Security and tick the box
    "Allow active content to run on My Computer." (Also, for more info,
    do a search in the forums for "Mark of the Web")
    >>>3. Can I create my own skin?
    Sure. Use the WebHelp skin editor as you normally would. Give
    the skin a name and use it when you publish.
    Hope this helps.
    John

  • Newbie - how to change the color of a line using ActionScript?

    This must be the most basic question in the world, but I've
    been searching the documentation for an hour.
    All I want to do is to draw a line on the stage, and then
    change its color (or endpoint positions) dynamically using
    ActionScript.
    This is the 1st step to creating complicated dynamic
    animations... (No, I do not want to use the timeline, I want to do
    it dynamically.)
    Yet a line can't be an instance, so I'm confused -- how can I
    possibly do this? Is there some key concept I'm missing here?
    Thanks
    Michael

    AS2 required you to create your own function for doing
    primitive shapes. In AS3 that has changed and the graphics package
    includes not only the old AS2 drawing API but also has methods for
    doing squares, circles etc.
    If you are a VB programmer, my honest opinion is to leave
    your traditional OOP mindset at the door when using Flash.
    Actionscript is still in its infancy and although AS3 does really
    strive for OOP oneness, it isn't there 100% like VB is which has
    been around 20 years longer and gone through numerous additions
    etc. Whenever I learn a new language VB, PHP, C, AS, Java....I try
    my best to look at the language as its own identity. All language
    share similarities but they all have their own idiosyncrisies. Keep
    an open mind and you'll find what you need.
    Most of the seasoned guys here will also tell you that
    although the documentation is decent, you are better off going out
    and picking up a book on Flash 8/CS3 and another one on
    Actionscript. Familiarize yourself with the program that way.
    With your programming background, I'd recommend picking up
    Essential AS2 (or AS3) by Moock depending on your version of Flash.
    Also, if you are more interested in the programmatic side of Flash,
    why not look into Flex Builder and AIR. Since it is purely a
    programming environment (no Flash IDE), you'd be more
    comfortable.
