Using an 11" for development work

I was wondering about the usability of the 11" for development work (I'd go the 1.6 with 4gig)
I will generally work with a monitor, but I'm wondering about the performance given the slower CPU.
Has anyone tried Eclipse? When a browser, etc, is running?
Compiling? What about VM stuff?
I was originally set on the 13", but the portability would be great. So long as it's not grinding along.
Thanks!

You would usually apply one background image to one element.
Your code is applying the same jpg to several elements.
Here is an example of CSS code that applies one png image to
the background of a div with the id name of wrapper2.
#wrapper2 {
background: url(../images/secondary_content_faux_column.png)
repeat-y 77% 0;
The html could look something like this:
<body>
<div id="wrapper2">
</div>
</body>
The code repeat-y 77% 0; tells the image to repeat vertically
and position itself using percentage values. More commonly pixels
are used for positioning using top and left as the preferred start
point.
Check your html and css code are working correctly together.
You can also check that you file path to the image and the image
and id or class names are correct.

    This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
    The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
    Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
    I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)
    http://apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
    Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

    I use classical Hebrew for my work, and Pages will only display English characters even with a Hebrew font selected. If I cut and paste Hebrew characters from another document, as long as the font is supported, it will appear in Pages.  If I type it won't continue in Hebrew.  I have tried downloading several fonts, including those from professional societies, but the only way to get Hebrew in my document is to cut and paste.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  I use an older MacBook running OS 10.9.1.  I used to do my Hebrew work in Word, but it is no longer supported by Mac OS.

    Just clarifying:
    Pages '09 has bad support for Hebrew, Arabic etc but will accept pasted text.
    Pages 5 has much better support but with bugs.
    If you have columns they are in the wrong order ie Text starts in the left column and ends in the right column.
    If you type English into Hebrew text it tends to fall in the wrong position eg instead of to the left of Hebrew punctuation it goes to the right.
    As Tom recommends the only real solution on the Mac is Mellel.

    btw Tell Apple, they are amazingly slow to fix this running sore which has been broken since RtoL was supposedly introduced in OSX 10.2.3 over a decade ago.

  • Any idea how you can safely use ONE computer for BOTH work and internet?

    I'm planning to set up a small music project studio, built around a powerbook, that I will be sharing with a friend of mine. My friend is going to use the computer for music AND heavy internet use, but I will only use it for music work (off-line).
    The thing is then that I am slightly worried about viruses, worms, spyware and similar unwanted stuff 'sneaking in' when the laptop is online. Even with firewall and anti-virus I guess there is always a risk.
    Any idea if there is a way of keeping things completely separate?
    How about if I had a bootable external hard drive for my work, with the Mac OS system on. Then when I'm working I could boot up from that drive (and use the computer off-line).
    Maybe we could even remove the internal hard drive from the powerbook (?), and use the powerbook with two external hard drives instead: One bootable drive for me and another bootable drive for my studio partner (and then only connect one hard drive at the time).
    Any idea if this would work well..? (I'm not sure if i.e. a virus could sneak in anyway, through the PRAM, L2 cache or the RAM or something similar) Or does anyone have any other suggestions...? Any ideas much appreciated. Thanks!

    Not too much worry with Macs, but get an Ethernet Router, skip Wireless, use strong Passwords.

    Excellent idea, especially if the heavy Net user doesn't have Admin rights.

    Just about foolproof! Just need 2 more drives for backup. Not sure why you'd want to remove the internal HD though.
    No Viruses yet in OSX land, in fact the only Malware I know about requires you to install it for itself!
    You'll be OK, that separate drives idea is pure genius.:-)

  • "Use this mailbox for" not working for Spam on one mac but fine on another

    I have Mail running on my Macbook Pro using IMAP. I have a business email account and a personal email account both with the same mail provider. When I create the account it creates a folder under the IMAP folders for Sent, Trash and Spam. I highlight each of these and use the "Use this mailbox for" command to set them for Sent, Trash and Junk respectively. This moves the folders up under the Mailboxes section at the top of mail. Everything is great.
    Now, exactly the same on my brand new iMac. When I get to the part about "Use this mailbox for", Sent and Trash work exactly the same as on the Macbook Pro but Spam stubbornly refuses to change and I am left with an extra folder under the IMAP folders.
    I am using the same version of OS X, the same version of mail and exactly the same setting in mail preferences. I don't understand why I can't get the Spam folder to be used as Junk? ANyone out there got any ideas?

    I have the same problem on my new MBP with Snow Leopard. I have multiple gmail accounts in Mail with IMAP. I can set the Sent/Drafts/Trash mailboxes to be used by Mail. But when I do the same with the Spam mailbox nothing happens at all.
    This is really annoying as I now have to go through all of my Spam mailboxes manually to check if there is a false positive. This seems to be a bug in Apple Mail? I also tried to set up all my accounts again but it didn't help, same problem.

  • Do you use two iPhones for developing?

    One iPhone as a consumer device and the other purely for development. I'd think two iPhones gets expensive though. But if you use one, that's a big hassle and risk. Just wondering what the nornal methods are. Thanks.

    Can't afford too but in reality I ought too. Apple should allow developers to buy carrier free iPhones purely for development.
    Android are doing this....

  • Use educational-version for paid work?

    Hello there!
    A while ago I bought Adobe Production Premium 5.5 with student discount and I wonder however it is legal to use the student licenses for paid work. Like, selling a movie made in Premiere Pro. Is that allright?
    Best regards,
    Rasmus

    I have had this conversation with the Adobe powers-that-be.
    There is no "educational version". There is an "educational discount".
    If you earned the right to the discount by being a student or teacher, then that is all that is required. Or, if you are the second user of a Home PC and the other person qualified for the discount, and you are using their license, then you are OK.
    The point of the discount for students is that they will eventually grow up, lose the discount, and pay full price because the Adobe software is what they know and they won't want to change.
    The point for teachers is that it gets used in classrooms where students see it, and the parents of the students may ask what software was used and they may buy it for their child, etc.
    The idea is that once you start using software, it creates a loyalty and people habitually stick with what they know.
    When my wife does little animations for her classroom, or when I help her with video, or I do Pro Bono work for the school, the parents are quite often interested in discussing how the results were created. I live fairly close to Silicon Valley and some of the parents are highly technical. I know for a fact that some have signed up for the Creative Cloud because of conversations we have had about the videos I shot of their children.
    This is especially true when I shoot a concert or dance recital, and the parents do too. Then they see theirs, and they see mine, and are puzzled why mine looks better. Seems to have had more light, or is smoother. Or they really like the animated titles. Whatever.
    Adobe knows this kind of stuff happens, and they encourage it with educational discounts. But there are no restrictions on the use of the software. Only on the qualification for the discount.

    current market price for that box is in the US$600 range. If they are looking for more than that, the stealing is going the other way.
    That system will be good for software develeopment for a VERY Brief time. The new 10.9 Mavericks (announced but not yet shipped) is likley to obsolete the last version of xCode you can run on it.
    You really should look for a 2009 or later for best Value.

  • What standards are used by Microsoft for developing Windows Server and other products

    Where can I obtain or solicit information regarding Microsoft software development process compliance with national/international standards? I need to create regulatory documentation, and knowing which ISO, IEC, ANSI, etc. standards that Microsoft uses to
    develop specific applications (including but not limited to Windows Server 2012 Standard) would be most useful.
    My efforts to obtain this information (live chat, calls to different support numbers and tweeting) have been fruitless.
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    As to the 'broken' link.  The editor in the forums has a nasty habit.  If one concludes a sentence with an URL and puts a period after the URL to designate the end of the sentence, the forum editor includes the period as part of the URL.
    Delete the period and the link will work.
    What do you mean by 'standards' for software development?  If you mean something like ISO/IEC 12207, I think you are going to have to search Microsoft web sites and then see if you can strike up a conversation with authors of articles you find.
    I am not aware of any specific publication of conformance to such standards within Microsoft.  Even though I worked for them for 12 years in a non-engineering role, I tended to take an interest in this sort of thing based on interests developed in previous
    roles.
    Here is a link (http://www.microsoft.com/security/sdl/resources/publications.aspx) and here (http://www.microsoft.com/security/sdl/default.aspx) that
    covers their Secure Development Lifecycle.  To a great extent, Microsoft 'wrote the book' on how to do secure development (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-security-development-lifecycle-michael-howard/1110830298?ean=9780735622142).
    It may appear dated, as it was published about eight years ago, but it became the textbook for some college courses on secure development.

  • Using two computers for development under one account

    (iPhone 2.0 development)

    Look in the program portal.
    Overview->Development->Obtaining your iPhone Development Certificate->Saving your Private Key and Transferring to other Systems
    Basically, you can just copy your developer certificate over using Keychain Access.

When you invite a resource with Outlook Connector, an email is sent to the value of the "mail:" attribute for the resource as well as having the event added to the resource calendar directly via WCAP. This is an MS Outlook specific behaviour.
    Refer to the following link on how to have these emails automatically discarded by using a 'bitbucket' channel address:

  • Used iPhone was for sale working perfect BUT earphone water sensor Red???

    I just drove an hour to check out an iPhone 3G for sale. The phone was in great condition, and ran smooth and quickly. Everything seemed to work perfectly including the cam, wifi etc. The only problem was that the sensor in the earphone jack was half red. The seller (who I can't beleive) swore that it hadn't gotten wet and there were no indications of problems. I read that sometimes the sensors will just turn red with humidity, like when sitting in the bathroom while someone showers. Also, it had no sensor at the bottom so I suspect he scratched it off because it was probably red also. Or does that one ever fall off? If he scratched it off or not, it may not have actually gotten wet. I may have just been in a steamy bathroom or something.
    Anyways, I turned it down. In the future, is there any way to check further if there actually is water damage? The phone looked and ran great. It wasn't easy to turn down for $150!

It says this device is linked to a different library and if i want to sync to a new one and delete everything on it. UH....NO   Is there a way to do this without deleting ? All purchases were made though the same apple id.

    - An iPod can only sync with one iTunes library. Yu can however manage music and videos among different computers by:
    Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
    - To change syncing computer, move all the media to compute r#2
    - Connect the iPod to #2 and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
    Note tha the iPod backup the iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.
