Using another monitor to view large blueprints.

I would like to add another monitor to my iMac so I can view my blueprints on screen.  I am clueless how to install the monitor, or even if I need to have specific specs for the monitor/TV that I need to purchase to avoid issues.  Can the iMac allow me to do this ?

Monitoring CPU usage can be done using the 'top' command
/usr/bin/top -l 1200 -ocpu -F -s 5 >top.log
This will collect the same 100 minutes of 'top' output, only the sample rate is once every 5 seconds. Each 'top' sample in the top.log file will put the highest CPU using app at the top of the sample. So you could 'grep' for the application you wish to look at
grep -i lightroom top.log
and then look at all the 5 second samples and see if your app was a heavy CPU user, or if it was slacking off
Looking at the top man page "man top", you might be able to take advantage of the "-c a" if you start top when going into heavy compute mode and stopping it just after heavy compute mode and then look at the last few entries.
You might also be able to use:
/usr/bin/top >tmp.log -l 1200 -c a -ocpu -F -R -s 5
-p '^bbbbbbbbbb $cccccc $jjjjjjjjj $oooooooooo $pppppppppp'
-P 'Command CPU RSIZE PageIns PageOuts'
Where the "-c a" causes the values to be accumlative (so each entry adds to the previous counts, and the CPU is the average over the entire run. So you start this command just before the heavy work segment, and stop it right afterwards. Then look at the last few entries as that should be your cumulative summary.

  • My MBP Screen is gone. Can I use another monitor to view?

    Hello:
I have a late 2008 15" MBP, running Snow Leopard, who's screen assembly has gone faulty and is prohibitively expensive to replace. although I did back it up, I would like to use my other MBP (2010, 12", running OS 10.9.5) as a monitor to view it's contents. Is this possible? I also have an OLD late '90's monitor (Studio Display 21 CRT) attached to another OLD 450MHZ PPC running 10.4. Is it possible to use this monitor?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

Thanks. Viewing on the CRT display as we speak. Now, I just have to find the right screen assembly part online. Apparently, there are two for this model and is was hard for the repair shop to tell...until he got in a screen (at $475) that was not compatible. Turns out the "right" screen assembly goes for $975 refurbished (plus labor). May be cheaper to either wait to find it myself or buy a used 15" MBP and swap the hard drives.
    Anyway, thanks for the advice!

  • Can I use another monitor with my iMac desk top?

Can I use another monitor with my iMac desk top? Our monitor screen is going out and would like to have another option then replacing the whole thing! I think A LCD TV would be less expensive than the repairs to our iMac.( OS 10.6.8 )

Yes, but we need to know exactly which year model you have? So that we can advise you on exactly which adapter you need for you iMac.

  • How do I re-size windows or use another method to view screen?

I was neglectful and put the power pack cord cap on my lap top keyboard and later closed the lid with that cap still there.  It damaged the screen so that I'm unable to view about the bottom quarter all the way across.  Are there any key strokes or such that will allow me to resize the windows so that I may see that area since I'm unable to do so using the drag-the-corner method now?  If not, may I connect the laptop to a generic monitor and with what kind of connector?

Try this. Open the System Preferences window & click on Displays. Set the screen resolution to the highest possible number & the window size will shrink. Then maybe you will be able to click on the bottom right corner.
Another possibility. Download & install this scroll utility. http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/ss/index.php It puts the up/down scroll arrows at the top & bottom of your window. The bottom arrows will not display because of the defect, but you should still be able to view the page contents.

  • I am stumped I do not understand why my roommates macbook pro when duel screened will display perfectly on my monitor while mine refuses to, but mine will display perfectly when using another monitor that is not mine. Please help me out.

One day when using my duel display the second monitor decided it wouldn't display at full resolution in the middle of doing something i was confused. I use a mini display to hdmi then hdmi to the second monitor. I thought maybe the converter or cable died. I bought another another mini display to hdmi and tried another hdmi cord and the same issue. My roommate has macbook pro as well so i decided to see if it was the monitor, when i pluged the mini display converter into his and used the external monitor it displayed perfectly not below resolution. Doing this I knew it was not the monitor or the mini display to hdmi or the hdmi cable. I took it into the genuis bar assuming now that it was my grapics card or logic board. When the genuis went to duel screen it on a cinema display it displayed perfectly. So went home tried to duel screen it again and still not displaying at full resolution. That is where I am stuck, in summary:
My screen used to display perfect resolution on a second monitor and suddenly did not.
Tested two mini display to hdmi and hdmi cords both were fine.
Tested to see if monitor was issue but displayed perfectly when i used roommates laptop.
Went to genius bar and displayed perfectly on second monitor so it can display perfect resolution on apples monitors but will not do so anymore on my monitor, even though roommates macbook pro will display perfect resolution on my monitor.
    I am beyond confused.

Apparently you have tried everything except - take the monitor in question to the Apple Store along with your computer.  If it works there, the mystery continues.

  • Can't use another monitor profile for OD user

Good day to all! There is a problem: In the network 4 Mac Lion clients with tablets Wacom and Lion Server with OD. Customers get the server security policies that impose some restrictions on them. Limitations are associated mainly with access to the system configuration, control for external drives and flash drives. Currently, restrictions on access to configuration screens available. However, users without administrator privileges can not change the current profile displays all the time is reset to the default profile. It may be necessary to give access to the policy to change the profile to register it manually? Thanks in advance!

I have to say, I am in exactly the same place ppshr150 is. I have checked both Quicktime and Quicktime Player preferences and the option to choose a default screen for full-screen presentation of movies does not exist.
I can drag movies over to the second monitor and then press Command F and they will play there but from a presentation perspective, this is rather unprofessional.
It surprises me that Apple does not have this option. Or is it a bug they haven't/won't fix?

  • I'm trying to make "Stop motion videos"  in Final Cut EXPRESS by using 100's of still photos and setting them to music.  They are coming out blurry if viewed larger than 4x6 in size

I'm trying to make "Stop motion videos"  in Final Cut EXPRESS by using 100's of still photos and setting them to music.  They are coming out blurry if viewed larger than 4x6 in size.
I don't understand why this is happening.

Quick follow up, since I was on my phone earlier and am back to a real keyboard.
To access Easy Setup, hit Control Q.
If you click on the blue discosure triangles, a dropdown menu with about a dozen different presets will be displayed. Select the one you want, (Here, I've selected 720P.)
Whatever you select for a preset will not be applied until you make a new sequence. (I don't like to have sequences with different properties in the same project so I prefer to make a new project if I change the Easy Setup.)
Because photo aspect ratios are different than video, I typically put a solid generator of some compatible color on the first track (v1) and put my photos on the track above (v2). Looks better, IMO, than black bars. There are other creative ways to display them. And of course, you could scale them up to fill the frame…but then you probably would have to re-position them.
    Good luck.

  • Full screen videos/streams on second monitor won't stay full screen while using another window on other monitor

Whenever I open and then full screen a video or stream of any kind, I am unable to use another window of Firefox while the video/stream maintains full screen. When I click off the video/stream it reverts back to the smaller screen. Is there any way to change this?

  • How do I move Adobe apps to another monitor in Mavericks?

Hi guys, sorry if I'm being obtuse, but since upgrading to Mavericks the one issue I can't seem to figure out is how to completely move my adobe apps across to another monitor.
The problem is now that apps like Illustrator CC, InDesign CC and the like- those with free floating palettes, seem to be stuck on my little 13.3 inch macbook screen unless I move each palette individually to the big screen, but then the menu bar remains on the little MBP screen. If I do anything to the workspace it all then snaps back to the little screen. In ML it seemed to treat the large screen as the primary display automatically and so this was never a problem.
I've let Adobe CC update everything, added mavericks updates, etc but still not having any luck. So far the only option i've found is to mirror the displays, which, honestly, defeats the purpose.
Is there anything I can do? This is a huge workflow issue for me because I do a lot of work on my macbook while connected to a 23" Samsung display via thunderbolt/DVI adapter. I love the size and weight of the smaller macbook but as a primary screen, 13.3 inches just isn't as comfortable to work on as 23 inches

I have this same problem. The other day I solved it using CfMcBlob's first solution, and I was very pleased. However, the problem is happening again with InDesign, but this time I can't try the same solution because "Displays have separate Spaces" is already unchecked.
Just to reiterate, I can drag my workspace window to my second monitor, but all of the tools and top menu stay over on my first monitor. I know that the "actual menu" has to stay on one monitor, but indesign has a top bar with several tools in it that I use all the time, and I'm having to go back and forth. When I first solved this problem, the entire window with the menu bar and tools would open on my other monitor.
Also, I do not want the second solution, because I still use many applications on my original monitor, and I don't want to lose having the "real" top menu here on the left.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Community...Macbook w 10.6.8 and I need printing help. Using three canon photo printers of same model and need them to print individually. They are older and NOT network-able. Currently using another Mac to print to 2nd printer. 3 is idle.

Is there software available where all I have to do is hit print and any of the 4x6 printers will print? Once I get this issue settled, I'll get a second larger format. I have to get this rectified because of time and ease. As mentioned, I have a second mac that I share screens with so my assistant can find pics for customers while I'm shooting. So, I can print through that mac to the printer. (ie....print to canon@##%#@Mac 2) I don't want to bring a third computer just to print to three of the same model printer. (That's what I've been doing) BTW....I totally know there are faster dye-sub printers out there but I'm about 4 more events from purchasing one...($$$) Some print under 10 seconds. I would appreciate any answers out there. Thank you.

I don't have that printer and I'm not on Mac, so someone else has to step in there. Generally a green/magenta cast indicates none/double printer color management. But then I don't know what you mean by "slight".
The Spyders aren't the most consistent and reliable calibrators out there. I had a Spyder 3 sensor that I just threw away because it gave a distinct red cast (I have several other calibrators, so there was no doubt). Another potential problem is that with most calibrators you can only adjust the white point along the blue/yellow Kelvin scale, but not on the green/magenta scale. This is often necessary to get a good white point color. In this case you need to use the monitor's OSD controls, and if possible the "pre-calibration" function in the calibrator to measure and monitor it - if that function exists. And I don't know if this is possible with an iMac.
This is basically a question of getting the white point right, both on the blue/yellow and the green/magenta axis (and luminance of course). The goal is to get a visual match to paper white on screen. With the white point properly set, neutral color balance relates to that, and the rest more or less follows by itself. (In addition you should set the proper black point/contrast for full control, but that's not the issue here).

  • Lightroom not using the Monitor Profile

I have recently set up a new computer with a new monitor. When I got PS and Lightroom set up on the new system I noticed that when viewing photos in both applications the colors are VERY different compared to how they look viewed online or in another photo viewer from my desktop (windows 8). I also noticed that when I opened PS I got a message saying that the Monitor Profile is "bad" and I could opt out to ignore the profile. When I did ignore it the color looks fine. Blacks are black, gray's are gray, etc . . . Anyway, I am wondering if there is a way I can have Lightroom ignore the profile as well. I have a monitor calibrator and I will try that, but I am wondering if it will do anything only because other applications look fine. Hope someone can shed some light on this!

First of all, Photoshop and Lightroom are fully color managed applications that will actually use the monitor profile to display the image. Many other applications (viewers/browsers) are not and will just ignore it. So there's a difference right there.
That said, when you get that message in Photoshop, it means exactly what it says. That profile is bad and should not be used.
The real solution is to use a calibrator to make a new custom profile for your monitor. Until you get that up and running, use sRGB IEC61966-22.1 as monitor profile. You set this up in Control Panel > Color Management > Devices:

  • Possible to add another monitor to macbook for dual screen usage?

    Hiya,
I would like to find out if I can connect another monitor to my Macpro so I can work with 2 screens?   I can easily do this with a pc laptop ad there is a monitor plug in but I don't see one for my macpro.
    Cheers,
    John

Recent MacBooks have a Mini DisplayPort or a Thunderbolt port, which can be converted to DisplayPort, DVI, VGA, or HDMI. A Mirrored second display is supported by all MacBooks, and many support the more useful "Extended Desktop".
Extended Desktop combines the screens along an edge of your choosing to form a much taller or wider desktop. You can drag windows to either display or split them across displays, and the two parts will scroll and update in perfect synchrony. The feature has been present in the operating System since at least System 4.2 in 1987, and is supported by all well-behaved Mac Applications.
NB: "Full Screen" feature in Mac OS X 10.7 is an iPhone feature ported to Mac OS X, and is useless for large displays and completely frustrating for multiple displays. Do not activate it thinking it is part of the solution -- it is for 4.7 inch single displays.
