Using archlinux as paravirtualized guest

Hello.
I have a ArchLinux virtual machine running on top of qemu-kvm. Now thaht the kernel has some of the virtio modules (virtio_blk and virtio_net), I'm now trying to use this guest with some paravirtualized devices (qemu-kvm -drive file=my_disk.img,if-virtio,boot=on -net nic, model=virtio ...)
I've added those modules to the mkinitcpio.conf and /ec/rc.conf of the guest. But I still can't boot when using the if=virtio for the -drive option, as there is no dev created for the disk.
Any hints on how to boot arch with this paravirtualized disk ?
EDIT: I'm using the kernel26 package from testing

something like no-ip.com or dyndns.com is what you need. but it needs to be mapped to your network IP obviously, not your local IP. as dusty said, you might need to change the port if it's not working externally on 80. if it is, you're set, and you shouldn't need to add anything to /etc/hosts unless you want to use a name instead of a local IP.

I've got a few OL6 guests up and running on my OVS 2.2.2 servers now. I managed to convert one of them to a PV guest by hacking together a vm.cfg.
The dmesg|grep -i xen shows me that the guest kernel is running in paravirt mode.
My problem is the OVM Manager is still showing this guest as a fully virtualized guest. Is there a better/proper way to convert an HVM guest to PV guest?

  • ISE 1.3 Guest API - using custom fields for guest creation?

I am currently working with the new ISE 1.3 guest api, i have most everything working, i can create guests fine, with the basic information entered into the guest account like first name, last name, company, email, phone and so on. Now i need some more fields to enter other information in for that guest, and i have created 5 extra custom fields called option1-option5, and enabled them for the "Known Guests" page on my sponsor portal. I can however not figure out how they should be adressed in the xml input sent in the api request...anyone tried this ?
    Regards
    Jan

    Hi Johan,
Sure i can lead on the way, the stuff i am doing is part of a complete system i build and sell, that integrates with ISE to give customers the ability to create guest accounts using a number of different social media facebook, google and so on, to self-provision accounts for guest acces (and many other things :-)
I mainly use PHP for this, and for simplicity you can use a curl command line executed by any scripting you prefer, or use any curl library you might have available to you.
So, you need an ise sponsor account that has the "api usage flag" allowed in the sponsor group it is a member of. Then you need to know a few things about the ise setup, that needs to be sent with your request to ise, to allow the creation of a guest account.
If you need some code examples, send me a pm and we can figure something out

  • OracleVM and paravirtualized guest - "Boot loader didn't return any data!"

    Hi folks,
we're having a problem here: We have installed the latest version of Oracle VM Server on a machine that does not provide hardware virtualization support (i.e., no Intel VT or similar). As a result, we will not be able to make use of hardware virtualized VMs, but according to the Oracle docs, we should be able to set up virtual machines of the paravirtualized domain type. So far, so good.
Also according to the docs, when setting up a PVM, one cannot use an ISO image located in a storage repository in order to start the installation, but instead one would have the mount the installation ISO somewhere, make available it's contents via NFS (or HTTP / FTP), and then set up the newly created virtual machine to attempt a PXE boot, specifying the location where the contents of the ISO have been placed (i.e.: nfs:host:/path/to/mounted/iso). All of this is decribed very well in the Oracle VM Server docs (chapter 8), but somehow it still doesn't seem to work for us.
What happens is this: When we attempt to boot our PVM via PXE, specifying the NFS location where we've made the contents of the ISO available, we always get this:

We've used multiple different ISOs in order to test this, including Oracle Enterprise Linux (just like the example in the docs does), however, we never get any further than this error message.
Any ideas what we might be doing wrong?
    Greetings,
    Nils

    Hi Avi,
thanks for your reply! Actually, I believe I checked the NFS reachability already. Here's what I can do on the VM server:
    [root@ORAVM1 ~]# ls /mnt/test
    [root@ORAVM1 ~]# mount.nfs 10.0.0.220:/mnt/iso /mnt/test
    [root@ORAVM1 ~]# ls /mnt/test

    eula.en_US HighAvailability LoadBalancer README-en RELEASE-NOTES-en.html RELEASE-NOTES-x86-en ResilientStorage ScalableFileSystem TRANS.TBL
    [root@ORAVM1 ~]#
So, I seem to be able to mount the NFS export correctly (what we're seeing are the contents of an Oracle Enterprise Linux ISO). And when setting up the VM, I specify "nfs:10.0.0.220:/mnt/iso" as the PXE boot path. Still it doesn't seem to work. :-(
ovs-agent.log doesn't seem to contain too many additinal information of value either. Here's a snippet of what seems to happen when I power up my VM, but I guess there's nothing really new in there:

  • Using her iPhone, a guest hijacked my network. How do I restore it?

How do I restore my AirPort to its orginal setting after someone used their iPhone to create internet access through my router?

Someone must have had your wireless password, or you did not have a password on the AirPort Express.
It is not necessary to reset your AirPort back to factory default settings if all that you need to do is change the wireless network password.
However, if the guest changed the password or other settings, and you do want to reset back to factory defaults, here is how:
Pull the AirPort Express from power
    Wait a minute
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for 10-12 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Express
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
The Express is now back to factory default settings so that it can be set up again

    Hi,
with the Vista CD inserted reboot your Mac and hold down the 'Option/Alt'-key.
In the following Selection Screen farthest to the right should be an icon of a CD labelled "Windows".
Click on it and your Mac should boot from the CD.

  • Using ACLs to control guests paths to the internet

Out global network consist of many sites world wide where 75% of the sites having their own internet connection.
To streamline the wireless setup in our WLC's I have considered to run the LAP's in H-REAP mode and on the guest SSID use access control lists to prevent guest users to access internal IP's.
The guest's shall still be authenticated by our NAC guest server.
The guest traffic would then flow to the default gateway which is the nearest internet connection.
I know that the guest might be able to craft an ethernet packet with spoofed source address and there might fool the ACL, but besides of that is there any major security risk I am missing here?
In a perfect world I would isolate the guest traffic, but our network structure makes it hard to streamline that.
The idea was to use 3-4 centralized controllers each with the same configuration and the H-REAP LAP's could then connect the one with lowest delay time via the "Enable Least Latency Controller Join" under the officeExtent AP settings (?).
    What am i missing here?

Yep -- USB works well too.  The advantage of Bluetooth over Wifi, incidentally, is power consumption.  If you cannot cable the phone (e.g. to a charger or to the PC) then the difference will be material in terms of battery consumption if you choose Bluetooth over Wifi.  Wifi, however, works with pretty-much anything where Bluetooth obviously requires that capable for the other device.

  • Using ArchLinux for daily work!

    Hello!
I started my Linux career with Debian Sarge (currently running on my server). For my desktop-machine I use gentoo Linux about 6 weeks, but it was to much "package-administration" for me. I like it to work with my console, but I want a distribution, who isn't so costly to administrate.
    config-files --> my job
package-management --> job of the distribution, without much work for me.
ArchLinux is a distribution, which hit's my philosphopy of a ideal Linux system.
    But their is a problem:
Arch is a very young distribution, which haven't so much packages like gentoo. Ok, no problem! I can made my packages easy by yourself!
But the basic system + desktop should be stable packages, without much error fixing.
    Now my question
Is ArchLinux "mature" to use it for the daily work, without much error fixing?
    Thank's for your answers!
    Greetings,
    flasher
P.S.: I hope someone can read my english, it's a little bit german-english

I've been using Arch as my main machine at work for several months now.  The updates have gone fairly well with no major problems.  Overall it's done better than other distros in this regard and so as far as stability goes I'd give it very high marks.
I only have two complaints which you may want to consider:
    1) If you are using it as a server it's tough to differentiate which updates are needed for security.  Yes you can ignore packages but unless you keep track of the security updates individually you'll have a tough time.  IMHO the Debian way is better where they have a source specifically for security updates.  That way you don't have to worry about your postgres dbase getting updated unless there's a security flaw.
    2) Using it as a desktop machine I had major problems with my USB card reader that I just couldn't ever figure out.  I tried just about everything I could imagine but never got it working.  Same hardware worked flawlessly in Ubuntu and OSX just by plug and play.
But to reiterate, I've been using it as my main machine at work for at least 3 months now with no failures.  So if you can get it working the way you want you should have no problem using it long-term
