Using calculated properties of an entity

Hi all,
I am having some serious trouble in finding out how this works. Maybe I'm not Googling correctly, but I have spent many hours already on this problem and I'm not getting anywhere. I am also reasonably sure I have checked out all the Netbeans tutorials on this matter, but alas. So I guess, I could do with some help.
This is really a basic (beginner?) question about persistence. As a side note: I am using Netbeans 6.7
I am running a database and all my tables have corresponding entity classes. I have a GUI in which I want to display a table from the database, together with some calculated values.
I'll make the setup as simple as possible. Take the simple database created by
CREATE DATABASE administration;
USE administration;
CREATE TABLE customers (
  id INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  firstname VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL,
  surname VARCHAR(50 NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY(id)
) ENGINE=INNODB;
INSERT INTO customers (firstname, surname)
  VALUES ('John', 'Adams'), ('Caroline', 'Nixon')Based on this database, Netbeans creates an entity class
@Entity
@Table(name = "customers")
@NamedQueries({
  @NamedQuery(name = "Customers.findAll", query = "SELECT c FROM Customers c"),
  @NamedQuery(name = "Customers.findById", query = "SELECT c FROM Customers c WHERE c.id = :id"),
  @NamedQuery(name = "Customers.findByFirstname", query = "SELECT c FROM Customers c WHERE c.firstname= :firstname"),
  @NamedQuery(name = "Customers.findBySurname", query = "SELECT c FROM Customers c WHERE c.surname= :surname")})
public class Customers implements Serializable {
  @Transient
  private PropertyChangeSupport changeSupport = new PropertyChangeSupport(this);
  private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
  @Id
  @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.IDENTITY)
  @Basic(optional = false)
  @Column(name = "id")
  private Integer id;
  @Basic(optional = false)
  @Column(name = "firstname")
  private String firstname;
  @Basic(optional = false)
  @Column(name = "surname")
  private String surname;
  // CONSTRUCTORS
  // GET AND SET METHODS
  // A FEW SIMPLE @override METHODS
  public void addPropertyChangeListener(PropertyChangeListener listener) {
    changeSupport.addPropertyChangeListener(listener);
  } public void removePropertyChangeListener(PropertyChangeListener listener) {
    changeSupport.removePropertyChangeListener(listener);
}Now, using the Netbeans GUI tools I create a JTable with values bound to Customers. This works fine: the apllication reads the database and displays correct values in the table (however, externally making a change in the database is not updated in the table, nor are changes in the table sent to the database, but that is a different matter - gonna work on that after this).
The next step is creating a calculated property, say "private String adressee" which is calculated by Java code the be for example "C. Nixon" or "J. Adams". (*This is my question: what is the correct way of implementing something like this, so that it is updated in the table when firstname or surname are altered*?) Now the problems start. Simply defining this property gives errors, because it is automatically interpreted as a persistent value. So the apllication does an SQL query interpreting 'adressee' as a column, which of course results in an error. Alternatively, I can define 'adressee' as @Transient. Now, the application compiles and runs, but 'adressee' is never updated in the table. Note that I update it manually: that is, I have the program listen to PropertyChange for surname and firstname, and the generate the correct value for adressee. This works, but is not reflected in the table. I have also tried to refresh() the JTableBinding when a PropertyChange occurs, but this returns a NullPointerException. Moreover, even if that should work, I am convinced there must be a way more elegant method.
I anyone would be so kind as to enlighten me, please do!
Greets

Somehow, retrying my first technique worked. Maybe it is because I am now using Hobernate, set to Eager (not Lazy, which gave me compiling errors!). For future reference, here is how I did it.
The MySQL table is called 'relaties'. 'contactpersoon' is a value which I want to calculate from several other values from this table and its related tables.
I use Netbeans to create entity classes from database. One of which is Relaties:
@Entity
@Table(name = "relaties", catalog = "TK", schema = "")
public class Relaties implements Serializable {
  @Transient
  private PropertyChangeSupport changeSupport = new PropertyChangeSupport(this);
  private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
  @Id
  @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.IDENTITY)
  @Basic(optional = false)
  @Column(name = "id")
  private Integer id;
  // AND MANY OTHER COLUMNS, THE USUAL ENTITY CODE
  @Transient
  private String contactpersoon;
  public String getContactpersoon() {
    return contactpersoon;
  public void setContactpersoon(String contactpersoon) {
    String oldContactpersoon = this.contactpersoon;
    this.contactpersoon = contactpersoon;
    changeSupport.firePropertyChange("contactpersoon", oldContactpersoon, contactpersoon);
  public void genContactpersoon() {
    // calculation code - note that I had to catch NullPointerExceptions for Columns without @Basic(optional = false)
    this.setContactpersoon(s);
  public void addPropertyChangeListener(PropertyChangeListener listener) {
    changeSupport.addPropertyChangeListener(listener);
  public void removePropertyChangeListener(PropertyChangeListener listener) {
    changeSupport.removePropertyChangeListener(listener);
}I now make another class, in which I put everything I think Relaties should do itself, but I can't put in there because of compilation errors (my bad?):
public class RelatiesHelper implements PropertyChangeListener {
  public void init(Relaties r) {
    r.addPropertyChangeListener(this);
    r.genContactpersoon();
    r.genAdressering();
  public void propertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent evt) {
    if (evt.getPropertyName().equals("achternaam") || evt.getPropertyName().equals("tussenvoegsels") || evt.getPropertyName().equals("voornaam") || evt.getPropertyName().equals("titel")) { // these are column titles of the properties on which 'contactpersoon' depends
      ((Relaties) evt.getSource()).genContactpersoon();
}I now made a class ViewRelaties, which includes a JTable. The values of this JTable can now be bound in the usual way, including 'contactpersoon':
public class ViewRelaties
        extends javax.swing.JPanel {
  /** Creates new form ViewRelaties */
  public ViewRelaties() {
    initComponents(); // code to create table and initialize a Relaties-list, bind values etc.
    ListIterator<Relaties> l = this.relatiesList.listIterator();
    RelatiesHelper rh = new RelatiesHelper();
    while (l.hasNext()) {
      rh.init(l.next());
  // THE initComponents() CODE
  private javax.persistence.EntityManager AdminPUEntityManager;
  private javax.persistence.Query relatiesQuery;
  private java.util.List<admin.entities.Relaties> relatiesList;
}Hope this helps someone :)

    Hi Gersh,
    I'm getting closer. I have now tried to use the FOR/NEXT logic on 1 property and it works. I know want to include another. In this case it seems as if the LOOKUP works fine, but the WHEN/REC/ENDWHEN is not. It doesn't recognize my LOOKUP(%LOOP_CU%%LOOP_CO%).

  • Cost involved in changing the code using log4j.properties to log4j.xml

    i have finished my application, and it was done in such a way that logging is done using log4j but it was using log4j.properties file.
    now i need to change it to log4j.xml. i need to do this at the earliest. so i need to know the cost involved in it?. do i need to change a lot on my app to read the log4j.xml?. In my app there is a function named getProperties, which actually reads the log4j.properties file.
    this is the code of that function
    public static Properties getProperties(String filename,String path) throws myException

    1. Restructure log4j.properties into log4j.xml.
    thats done
    2. Move log4j.xml into a directory that's in the
    classpath.
    actually i donot understand what does it mean to move in a directory thats in classpath means. i have to use logging in my webapplication running in tomcat. and my log4j.xml has to reside in catalina.home/properties/. My log4j.properties have been residing here and it had worked well woth the previous function. Now what i did is placed the log4j.xml under properties folder. Now tell me what modifications should i make in the above code.
    3. Remove any code that explicitly configures log4j
    (i.e. the initialize() method) because log4j will
    configure itself from any properties file it finds in
    the classpath, automatically, the first time it is
    called.I prefer not remvoing this function as this function is being called in many of my classes... and we don't have time to edit all...
    please help... and excuse me if i asked some blunders.!!!

    Is there any way to display the full name without step out any rows for Sales Rep field

    Your description is a little confusing. For performance reasons it is always best to set the use primary join on multi value links. This means that when multi value fields are displayed in applets they always show the primary by default. If you want to display something other than the primary what is your rational behind this and why not make the record you want to display the primary?

    Of course there is. This is the kind of calc script that only gets run once, so make usre you test it well before doing it on production and make a backup of production before doing it.
    It would be something like
    Fix(time frame, accounts to be flipped, level zero other dimensions)
    actual = actual * -1;
    EndFix
    Cal dim dimensions
    Note, I chose actual, but you could do it for any dimension that has a single or only a couple of members. What ever dimension you choose to do the calculation on, it can't be included in the fix statement

    In this solution you have to make two additional columns and one workflow.
    step 1 :
    create column ‘pID’ on the list of the type number.
    Step 2:
    Create on the list with SharePoint Designer a listworkflow
    Set in the start option: ‘Start workflow automatically when an item is create’
    In the workflow you set de column 'pID' with the value from 'ID' ( standard column)
    Use for this the option: ‘Set field in current item’.
    You need that because you can't use the column 'ID' in the formula in an calculated column
    Step 3:
    create column ‘IssueID’ on the list of the type calculated column.
    Use the formula:
    =""&"TP_W1_SCO_"&[pID]

    I am trying to use Migration assistant to migrate my forms form 6i to 10g.
    While doing so , I want to use search_replace.properties file to search for soem strings and automatically replace them.
    I want to search for 'message_box(' but it is not being read due to this '(' special symbol.
    How can I include special symbols in search or replace string?

    So no reply on this thread...

  • Weblogic Admin and Managed Server start using boot.properties and LDAP Acc.

    Hello - Can any one please tell me if Weblogic 10.3.x can be started using boot.properties file and by using a user account from the External LDAP (OID) server?
    I have configured the Weblogic server and have added a LDAP authenticator.
    The Group in OID is mapped to the Admin role in Weblogic so that the user can start and stop the server.
    LDAP users can successfully authenticate and access WLS console.
    We would like to remove Default Authenticator (Embeded LDAP) from the list of available providers for our security releam.
    Thank you.

    Tested and got it worked.

  • [svn] 762: -update the 3.0 branch to use build. properties to create the flex-sdk-description.xml

    Revision: 762
    Author: [email protected]
    Date: 2008-03-10 07:44:49 -0700 (Mon, 10 Mar 2008)
    Log Message:
    -update the 3.0 branch to use build.properties to create the flex-sdk-description.xml
    Modified Paths:
    flex/sdk/branches/3.0.x/build.properties
    flex/sdk/branches/3.0.x/build.xml
    Added Paths:
    flex/sdk/branches/3.0.x/collateral/en_US/flex-sdk-description.xml

    By the way, simply adding the quotes around the lexical names in the sql statement doesn't work. That causes the lexical references to be ignored as simple string values:
    SELECT
       '&FLEX_GL_BALANCING_APROMPT' alias_gl_balancing_aprompt
      ,'&FLEX_GL_ACCOUNT_LPROMPT'   alias_gl_account_lprompt
      ,'&ACCT_BAL_LPROMPT'          alias_acct_bal_lprompt
    FROM dualI turned on statement-level debugging via xdodebug.cfg and saw how it compiled the lexicals. By replicating the call to apps.fnd_flex_xml_publisher_apis.kff_segments_metadata that I found there, I was able to hack together a workaround for this issue.
    Please point me to a better way of doing this if possible, as I had to GRANT EXECUTE on this apps package to my custom code schema. Is there a better lexical/flexfields reference than the XML Publisher documentation?
    Here is the call I made in my before-report trigger:
    --set ACCT_BAL_LPROMPT flexfield segment metadata lexical
    begin
    apps.fnd_flex_xml_publisher_apis.kff_segments_metadata(
      'FLEX_ACCT_BAL_LPROMPT',
      'SQLGL',
      'GL#',
      101,
      'GL_BALANCING',
      'Y',
      'LEFT_PROMPT',
      c_FLEX_ACCT_BAL_LPROMPT
    end;

  • Hide Parameter Pane using Report Properties Code

    Hi,
    I want to collapse the Parameters pane by default when the users view the report through the URL.
    I have read other similar threads and understood the below.
    It is possible by appending the command rc:Parameters=Collapsed. But this is only in ReportServer URL and not in Reports URL.
    This works fine. But, when the user accessing the report from
    http://servername/ReportServer, you cant expect him to append this text everytime. I also found that it can be somehow achieved using Report Properties Code. But, since Im new to that, unable to get how to achieve the same.
    Could someone share an example of how to set the default property of rc:Parameters to Collapsed using Code?
    Thanks,
    Akalya

    Hi Akalya,
    According to your description, you want to hide parameter pane when the user accessing the report from Report Manager. To achieve this goal, we can click “Show/Hide Parameters” arrow to hide the parameter pane after view the report from Report Manager.
    Besides, if I understand correctly, you had specify default values for all report parameters, so you want to hide parameter pane. If in this scenario, we can hide all parameters and then the parameter pane will be hidden.
    For example, open the report Properties page on Report Manager and go to Parameter tab, click the "Hide" selection for all parameters. We can also hide the parameters by specify the parameter visibility with "Hidden" before you deploy the report to Report
    Server.
    If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.

  • System.exit(int) and javac def-use calculation

    I'm wondering if anyone can tell me why javac (J2SE v1.4.2) seems to ignore "System.exit(int)" (alternately, "Runtime.getRuntime().exit(int)") for the pursposes of determining possible variable access before an initialization.
    For example, consider the following code:
    /*01*/  public class C {
    /*02*/    public void foo() throws Exception {
    /*03*/      C obj;
    /*04*/      while (true) {
    /*05*/        try { obj = new C(); }
    /*06*/        catch (Exception fault) { System.exit(1); }
    /*07*/        obj.foo();
    /*08*/      }
    /*09*/    }
    /*10*/  }Compile this (ignoring the absurdity of what "foo()" actually does), and you will get a variable obj might not have been initialized error. This despite the fact that a call to "System.exit(int)" never returns normally, by definition. To illustrate why this error doesn't make sense, substitute the "System.exit(1)" of line #6 with any of "break", "return", or "throw new Exception()". The use calculation for variable 'obj' is correct in these three alternate situations, but not for the first, even though the situation is analagous.
    Obviously, there is an easy work-around to this (viz., change line #3 to "C obj = null;"), though it seems unnecessary. Any ideas?

    System.exit() doesn't have the same "special" meaning
    to the compiler as "break", "return", or "throw" do.
    As far as the compiler sees, you are simply calling a
    method in your exception handler; it doesn't know
    that there will be no return from that method. Sure,
    the compiler could special-case System.exit(), but
    then you'd still see this same problem if you came up
    with your own wrapper method that calls
    System.exit().. the compiler in general doesn't (and
    shouldn't) assume that a method call will terminate
    the app.I understand that "System.exit(int)" is merely a method from the perspective of the compiler, but it is a rather special method (actually the "Runtime" version, for which the "System" version is merely a wrapper) with respect to correct program execution, calculated during the various traces that are done during compilation. And wrapping "System.exit(int)" with another method wouldn't make any difference to the calculation if it was considered, from the perspective of compilation, an uncaught (implicitly declared non-Runtime) exception. Besides, there must be some execution sequence within "Runtime.exit(int)" that serves, essentially, the same function as an "exit" keyword.
    What's wrong with supplying a default value when you
    declare the variable?Absolutely nothing, except that it isn't necessary. I typically do so anyway, and only came across this "feature" of javac during a lapse of my coding standards.
