Using Cron to schedule an rsync with Leopard?

Firstly, just wondering if any changes have taken place from Tiger to 10.5.5 in writing and running Cron command lines..I tried using Cron to run rsync at a scheduled time and accessing a command line on my desktop that works on its own, but didn't work. Would I have to put the command line into a specific location like Documents..??
ANy help would awesome!
Thanks
Mark

Yes it looks right, but that doesn't mean anything when dealing with cron.
First, I've seen systems where cron was running on a different timezone than what you are in. This is why I always try the
* * * * * date >/tmp/tmp.cron
which will tell me 2 things. First it will tell me cron is actually working as I will only get a /tmp/tmp.cron file with the current time and date in it if cront is working. The 2nd thing it will tell me is if cron is working in the same timezone that I'm working in.
Second, the cron environment does not include all the environment variables you normally see when you are using a terminal session. Here are the environment variables I see on my system:
SHELL=/bin/sh
USER=harris
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin
PWD=/Users/harris
SHLVL=1
HOME=/Users/harris
LOGNAME=harris
Make sure you do not depend on missing environment variables.
Again, I suggest you check to see if cron has reported any errors to you via /usr/bin/mail (NOTE: this is not Apple Mail).

  • Can I use the backups that I made with Leopard ?

    Hi,
    Can I use the backups that I made with Leopard or do I have to re-configure Time Machine again, like it never happened when SL is installed ?
    Sincerely.

    You should only have to worry about doing this, if you choose to erase and install Snow Leopard.
    Snow Leopard by default upgrades your system, and thus a restore would only be necessary in an emergency.

  • Can I use migration assistant from a mac with leopard to a mac with tiger?

    My old mac was upgraded to leopard, (don't ask me why), and I just got a new mac with tiger, although I ordered leopard up to date. Can I use migration assistant to move stuff from the old mac with leopard to the new mac with tiger, or do I have to wait until I get the copy of leopard? Plus, if I move files over now- like through email and/or network connection, and then when I get leopard and archive and install, what happens to my files?

    That is correct. You'll need either an ethernet cable or a firwire cable and a firewire to thunderbolt adapter to connect the two macs together. Here's info on Migration/Setup assistant

  • Can I use Logic 9 on a G5 with Leopard

    Is anyone using Logic 9 on a G5 Quad-core with Leopard? I have been told by tech support that it won't work, but I have heard from other people that it will. Before I buy it, I would just like to make sure it will run. Any feedback would be helpful.
    Thanks

    There are several people on this forum who are currently running Snow Leopard on their G5. If Apple says you can't do it, that just means they haven't put the time and resources into testing it. I just talked to Logic technical support and he told me that Logic 9.0 will not run on my G5. Yet, you say it will. So forgive me for questioning the validity of your statement. I was just wondering if anyone out there is actually using it.

  • "...cannot use the application "Address Book.app" with  'leopard.'...????

    I get the message: "You cannot use the application “Address Book.app” with this version of Mac OS X. "What does this mean, wat do I do? Do I lose my address book.?

    you can do the following to transfer your Tiger addressbookdata file to Leopard if none of your other countermeasures are working.
    Create a new folder and give it a name such as TigertoLeopard data or whatever;
    then drag your Tiger addressbook data file into that folder;
    add .abbu to the end of the name you gave that new folder;
    remember where you placed the folder and use Leopard Mail import command.

  • Why can't I use 'Control and Arrow' to zoom with Leopard?

    Hi guys,
    I've lost the ability to quick track zoom since installing Leopard. When I press Control and one of the four vertical or horizontal arrows, the Spaces icon shows and shoves my Logic out of the way.
    I hope that there's some way to disable this function so it will enable me to use my beloved Zoom again.
    Please help!!!

  • I use to see the icon preview with leopard snow, now that i installed Lion i can't see them, Why is this?

    The funny thing is that today i discovered that a complete album i do can see the icon preview albumart but just that one, the rest of my music i just cant

    That wasn't a change in Firefox. It sounds like something is broken in your Firefox installation, or you are misunderstanding the different between the Bookmarks Toolbar and the other Toolbars.
    In the Bookmarks Toolbar the text appears next to the website icon, not below the icon as with the other two Toolbars, and it's not switchable between text and no text as with the other Toolbars. With both the bookmark icon and the Bookmark name missing, something is broken in your installation. You need to do a little troubleshooting.
    Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />
    [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode] <br />
    ''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
    If not, see this: <br />
    [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes]
    If your problem isn't related to an extension, your bookmarks data base file (places.sqlite) is probably corrupt. <br />
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite <br />
    Be aware that if you delete the "places.sqlite" and similar files, your bookmark website icons won't automatically appear (the JSON backups don't have that icon data) when you restart Firefox and the places.sqlite is rebuilt using the backup data file, but the icons should be saved the first time each bookmark is used for the first time.

  • HP Photosmart 7550 printer with Leopard

    I'd just like to know if there is anyone who is able to use an HP Photosmart 7550 printer with Leopard.
    I can print, but the printing is all garbled.

    Thank you for your help HP Mac Architect.
    Print Driver from System Preferences-> Print & Fax shows HP PhotoSmart 7550 - CUPS+GutenPrint 5.1.3 . There is another version called HP PhotoSmart 7550 - GutenPrint 5.1.3 .
    The same "drivers" show up under http://localhost:631 which tells me that my system is only finding the CUPS driver (I think its a PPD or Postscript Printer Definition file that works with 1 driver for all printer types).
    I downloaded the HP drivers on 11/2/2007 - that file is called gutenprint05.1.3.U.dmg (Jun 19 2007). I ran Install Gutenprint 5.1.3.mkpg found on the disk image. This installed the HP PhotoSmart 7550 - CUPS + GutenPrint 5.1.3 drivers.
    I also have an HP Printer Selector program from 11/2/2007. If I click the "select" button on this program, it brings me to a screen called HP Printer Utility. At the bottom of the screen it appears to specify a non-cups driver: PhotoSmart/AiO connectivity: photosmart 7550, SN:CNxxxxxx. I can print a test and a diagnostic page from this utility window. The printing is absolutely perfect from this window.
    So to me it appears that there is an old photosmart driver seen from the HP Printer Selector program and there are CUPS drivers. yet System Prefs can't find this driver. Or am I wrong.....
    Thanks again for trying to help

  • Can I boot up a Tiger Disk IMage HDD using my Macbook Pro (with Leopard)

    Before my Ibook G4 crashed (tiger 10.4) I made a disk image using super duper. I purchased a Macbook Pro (leopard) and when I tried booting the disk Image I had made using superduper on a smart disk firewire drive, it would not recognize it.
    I held the option key when booting but only the Mac drive on the Macbook pro showed up. Is that a bug/flaw with leopard that you can't even boot an external HD disk image made using Tiger?
    I know the disk image is good because it boots on my G5 which has tiger installed.
    Thanks for a reply..

    Allan Eckert and BCC99,
    Thanks for the responses. I REALLY appreciate it becuase I usually spend a lot of time spinning my wheels trying to make something work that doesn't.
    The reason I wanted to boot it was that my old IBOOK crashed and I wanted to boot up the old "clone" (not disk image - my poor choice of words) so that I could view some of my older emails that contained information that I wanted to view. I know I could do it on my G5 but I wasn't home and wanted to try my new Macbook.....
    Thanks again...

  • Can I install snow leopard, using my original disk that came with the computer, on my mac that has mavericks as its OS?

    I recently had a new hard drive installed in my macbook pro (2009 model). Previously I was running snow leopard and refused to upgrade as I knew it would cause my pro tools to become incompatible, however when I received my knew, hard drive due to my old one becoming corrupt, the apple techs had installed lion as the OS, I updated to mavericks on the off chance the incompatibility was just with Lion. However I my Snow leopard disk is also incompatible with the new OS, I would like to know if there is any way to install snow leopard onto my mac while it is using mavericks?

    Restart the computer with the disk in the drive and the C key held down and install Snow Leopard onto a blank partition or drive. If needed, use the Disk Utility to repartition or erase the internal one.

  • Can I use InDesign CS with Leopard?

    Is anyone successfully using InDesign CS with Leopard?

    Hi Tim
    I came across the very useful blog recently:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/indesignchannel/2007/11/indesignleopard_updateiii.html
    by Tim Cole which may help to explain the problem you (like me!) are having. If you can't be bothered to read it all then the gist is that this is an Apple problem which they know about and are trying to fix (no date for release as yet). It relates specifically to IDCS3 and Leopard, in particular the linking of files that is unique to ID as opposed to the other Adobe programs (other CS3 programs are unaffected I think). For me the only workable solution has been to trash the ID preferences file which can be a nuisance (as you have reset prefs afterwards) but it has enabled me to continue using IDCS3. The problem appears to affect those using PowerPC more than Intel machines. For those having problems with CS and CS2 you should be aware that Adobe have no plans to make these versions compatible with Leopard; not now, not ever! Check the Adobe site for a list of compatible software (yes, IDCS3 is listed but as mentioned this is not an Adobe problem). Why Apple have not made an announcement about this is quite beyond me.
    Hope this is useful.

  • Can Photoshop 7.0 be used to upgrade Photoshop 6.0 on a Mac G5 with Leopard 10.5.8 ?[was: gonzo1944]

    Can Photoshop 7.0 be used to upgrade Photoshop 6.0 on a Mac G5 with Leopard 10.5.8 or will it not work unless it is in the Classic envoirnment?

    To R. Kelly.....I am old school in Mac, I love my G5...I do have a Bachelors degree in Electronic Publishing, but I graduated in 95'...so, not meaning to bore you...I do have Photoshop 6.0 and was unaware, though I purchased Leopard throught the Mac store, that the classic would no longer be available. I do a great deal of work in Photoshop and Illustrator and I guess my main question is....where do I go from here?
    I know that CS-5 Photoshop is a whole new program and I checked with Adobe and on Amazon and it is not cheap, I know enough to deal through an authorized dealer...My Mac is a power PC G5 that I purchased in 2005. What version of Photoshop do I need to purchase so that it is compatible with leopard?  I have much work piled up to do and this would help me greatly.
    Thank you for your help and any help you can provide for me,
    Dennie

  • Using MYST Successfully with Leopard 10.5.2)

    Greetings.
    I am considering buying Myst for the first time, but have read of the many difficulties using Myst with Leopard 10.5.2 (or with any version of Leopard, for that matter).
    Is it possible to have success using Myst with Leopard? If so, would any of you be so kind as to share with me the details? I haven't a clue where to start.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi,
    I've tried several times, and I can't get it to work...
    I also tried installing the updates and it still doesn't work...
    This is one reason why I have a problem with mac when it updates its OS...
    Prior to upgrading from Tiger to Leopard, Myst IV worked fine.
    Now, It doesn't work at all. Mac should invest more in new technologies while keeping backwards compatibility...
    I wouldn't buy it if I were you...
    David
